Welcome from Dan Mueller
Lastsummer my wife and I took our adult kids on a July vacation to Spain, a country that has captured each of our hearts. All four of us studied in Madrid in college – different eras, but we each had magnificent academic and cultural experiences. This was the first time we were there together. We settled on an apartment in the Chueca neighborhood. Centrally located, charming Chueca also is the LGBT neighborhood of the city. Coincidentally, it’s July, not June, when Pride is celebrated there.
My wife and I studied there in the 80s. Spain’s’ repressive dictator, Francisco Franco, had not yet been dead ten years when we were students at the University of Madrid, so while there was an active gay community in Madrid in the 80s, there was still stigma and fear. Anyway, we knew we would be rolling our suitcases into a party by posting up in Chueca, but I was not prepared for the happiness and the magnificence of Madrid’s Pride celebration. It wasn’t just confined to Chueca, but celebrated citywide. Madrid’s streets were festooned with rainbow bunting. Monuments were lit up at night in rainbow colored lights. Their pride parade was televised live and attended by tens of thousands of people. The evolution of this country’s embrace of LGBT issues was nothing short of staggering to those of us who remember a different time and they appeared to be richly rewarded for it as hotels and cafes were buzzing with reservations.
MILWAUKEE JUNETEENTH 2023: A BLACK NOUVEAU SPECIAL

MATC Names Debbie Hamlett
Vice President and General Manager of Milwaukee PBS
Milwaukee PBS has a new vice president and general manager, Debbie Hamlett, who begins her new role effective June 12, 2023. Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) made the announcement on April 24. The MATC District Board approved the appointment on April 25.
Hamlett currently serves as executive director and general manager at WCMU Public Media in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, which serves viewers and listeners in central Michigan and parts of Ontario. In her current role, she manages 38 staff members and 20 college interns. Like Milwaukee PBS, WCMU is a licensee of an institution of higher education –Central Michigan University.
Prior to her time at WCMU, Hamlett served for seven years as the assistant general manager and chief strategy officer at Nebraska Public Media. She also worked in development roles at Illinois Public Media and South Carolina ETV, the state’s public educational broadcasting network.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Milwaukee PBS team and Milwaukee Area Technical College,” Hamlett said. “Together, we will continue to serve Milwaukee and surrounding communities with engaging educational programs and services. I look forward to working with the creative and innovative staff to build upon a strong legacy of work.”
On the LOCAL SCENE
ON TV
ADELANTE – With 200 years of bilateral relations. Ambassador Claudia Franco Hijuelos of the Mexican consulate in Milwaukee, talks about this. We learn about Dr. Adriana McCleer, who discusses the dismantling of Tucson, Arizona’s Mexican American Studies program. And immigration attorney, Susan Reed, of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center talks about the work that her organization carries out.
Pride Madrid proves that communities thrive when leaders and institutions send cues that let people know they belong. Spain has done this with aplomb. So has Milwaukee PBS, where our legacy of inclusion goes back decades as you can see in our 65th anniversary exhibit now on display in the MATC Create Gallery downtown (visit milwaukeepbs.org/65 for details).
U.S. politics would indicate that inclusion is a charged topic here. While our work continues, it makes me pleased to know that 80 percent of Americans agree that PBS programming sends cues daily that all are welcome and belong here - in June and throughout the year.
Dan Mueller Chief Development OfficerBLACK NOUVEAU – Celebrate “Black Music Month” with a look at a collection of stories that span genres including: performing artist Klassik who has curated an individual sound that blends hip hop, electronic, soul, Slocum, a flutist in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and we talk to multi-award-winning music director Abdul Hamid Royal.
MY WISCONSIN BACKYARD – It’s double the adventure with two programs this month. Segments include a visit to a mushroom farm in Burlington, an introduction to an ice cream shop just for dogs and the team goes fishing with the DNR as they teach kids about the sport.
THE ARTS PAGE – While the Museum of Wisconsin of Art has been around for decades, it has been at its current home in downtown West Bend for 10 years. MOWA celebrated their 10th anniversary in the iconic building. The Arts Page was there for the celebration and talked with the architect behind the design.

New Documentary Celebrates Wagner, Wisconsin LGBTQ+
See Wisconsin history through a new lens in the all-new documentary, WISCONSIN PRIDE.
The film brings hidden LGBTQ+ stories forward, and reconsiders our state’s history in that light.
WISCONSIN PRIDE premieres at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 on Milwaukee PBS 10.1 and PBS Wisconsin. LGBTQ+ history is Wisconsin history. This powerful two-hour documentary features trailblazing Wisconsinites who, when faced with intolerance, responded by creating community, living authentically, fighting for rights and having pride in themselves.
Producer Andy Soth felt compelled to tell this important story. “I hope viewers take away a richer appreciation for our state’s history,” Soth said. “LGBTQ+ history, simply put, is Wisconsin history. This is an authentically Wisconsin story. There are intersections with Wisconsin
traditions and our LGBTQ+ citizens.”
The first hour of the film explores how diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity and expression are a normal part of the human experience. The documentary opens with Indigenous people prior to Wisconsin’s European colonization, and continues through the 19th and 20th centuries. This half of the documentary considers how being different from the mainstream could provide unique perspectives that enabled LGBTQ+ people to contribute in ways others could not imagine.
The second hour of the film explores how forward-looking Wisconsinites challenged LGBTQ+ harassment and injustice in visionary ways, long before these efforts received national attention. Through organized protest, an independent press, and gay bar-centered social networks a movement grew
that helped build a coalition for legislative LGBTQ+ rights. Embracing and celebrating Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ history is vital for protecting these hard-won human rights and expanding them to all.
WISCONSIN PRIDE also features and celebrates R. Richard Wagner’s work as a historian and author. Wagner, who passed away in 2021, is featured in the documentary and his twovolume history from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press provided guidance and inspiration. Wagner was an activist, historian, gay rights leader, elected official, and public servant who worked for the state of Wisconsin for 33 years.
This powerful documentary will also be broadcast on June 26, at 8:00 pm on Milwaukee PBS 36.1 and available starting June 1 at pbswisconsin.org/ wisconsin-pride and on the free PBS App on all streaming devices.
