his month Milwaukee PBS would like to recognize the Dale R. & Ruth L.

Michels Family Foundation. They have been a long-time local supporter of American Experience and spring and summer patriotic programming on Milwaukee PBS. American Experience, the winner of 30 Emmys and numerous other prestigious awards, has been the most-watched history series on television for nearly 30 years. In May, American Experience broadcast a three-part series on World War I, “The Great War,” highlighting the complex story of World War I, an event that forever changed America and the world. American Experience’s compelling documentaries bring to life the personalities, events, and epic stories in our nation’s past and recent-past that have shaped our nation’s identity. Since 2008, the Dale R & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation has sponsored a variety of patriotic programming on Milwaukee PBS. Their sponsorship in spring and summer 2017 includes such patriotic programs as The National Memorial Day Concert, A Capitol Fourth, PBS Previews: The Vietnam War, Return to Normandy, Milwaukee PBS’s locally produced production, Mettle and Honor: the Greatest Generation and others. The Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation was formed in 1998 to coordinate charitable giving of the Michels Family and their family-owned construction company, Michels Corporation. For almost sixty years, Michels Corporation has been a pioneer in innovative technologies for the construction industry. The company started as a small pipeline contractor in 1959 and has become one of the largest utility contractors in North America, offering construction, engineering, and procurement services to keep pace with growing demand in the energy, transportation, telecommunications and utility construction industries. “My family and I are pleased to underwrite programming that focuses on patriotism and the history of our country,” said Ruth L. Michels, CEO of Michels Corporation. “We join Milwaukee PBS viewers in appreciating programs on these important and inspiring subjects, and are proud to help make them available to everyone." The generous underwriting support of the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation ensures that American Experience and patriotic programming continue to be shown on Milwaukee PBS. Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the underwriting support of the Michels Family Foundation. Their vision and commitment makes it possible for Milwaukee PBS to offer our southeastern Wisconsin viewers engaging, informative, and entertaining programming that shines a light on our national heritage. Letter from

Bohdan Zachary

O

ne of the longstanding traditions at Milwaukee PBS is the Great TV Auction. Over its nearly half century history, the annual fundraising event has raised several million dollars for Milwaukee PBS. On Saturday, May 6, hundreds of auction volunteers, on-camera hosts, MATC television students and Milwaukee PBS staff wrapped up a successful and special Great TV Auction. The 49th annual fundraiser concluded at 11:00 p.m., marking the final Great TV Auction that will be held at the Brookfield studio. In 2018, the 50th anniversary event will be broadcast from the downtown MATC campus. More details will be forthcoming. I'd like to take this opportunity to offer a heartfelt thanks to the thousands of volunteers who have given their hearts and time to the annual Great TV Auction. You've made a world of difference and we can't thank you enough for all you've done. In recent weeks you've no doubt heard about the White House budget proposal that calls for the

elimination of all funding for CPB, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The CPB is the Federal agency that distributes grants to public television and public radio stations. In response to the White House proposal, over 250,000 public media advocates signed up for the Protect My Public Media campaign. Your voices and your passion for public television and public radio were heard through the halls of Congress. Funding was left in place through the end of September. For that we are grateful. But what might happen next is the great unknown. We will keep you up to date on any new developments. I am grateful for your dedication to public broadcasting – especially Milwaukee PBS. On behalf of myself and the entire staff at Milwaukee PBS, THANK YOU for your time and advocacy to support our mission.

PBS TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEATLES’ SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

– SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION Premieres June 5 at 9p.m. on Channel 10 –

C

elebrate the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking Beatles album with a new documentary, SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION, a look back at the creation and ongoing influence of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released on June 1, 1967. Hailed as a landmark achievement by critics worldwide, the album won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and ranks #1 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as “the most important rock & roll album ever made.” This new documentary, from Huge Films and directed by Francis Hanly, conjures up the psychedelic, phantasmagorical world of Sgt. Pepper, provides context for the culture of the day, and shows how the album, which featured classic songs including “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “She’s Leaving Home” and “A Day in the Life,” became a driving force within that culture. Hosted by award-winning British composer, author, music historian and broadcaster Howard Goodall, SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION premieres Monday, June 5 9:00p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.

When The Beatles made the decision to stop playing live in August 1966, most of the world’s press concluded that they were finished. But far from finished, the band suddenly had the time to pour all of their energy into writing and recording, creating an album that broke ground in countless ways. Released in June 1967, after almost a year of secrecy, the album was an immediate sensation. SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION features material never before accessible outside of Abbey Road Studios, including recordings of studio chat between band members and isolated instrumental and vocal tracks. It reveals the nuts and bolts of how the album came together, and provides insights into the choices made by The Beatles and George Martin. With wit, clarity and accessibility, host Howard Goodall explores the back-story of some of the major songs, including the personal stories and biographical connections behind the music. In addition he explicates the revolutionary musical concepts of the album and demonstrates how they were achieved.
