ith March’s arrival, we hope that the cold and dreary days of winter weather may soon be coming to an end. We all look forward to longer daylight hours and milder temperatures. Spring may soon begin to make its presence felt. This month MPTV would like to recognize The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation for its generous underwriting support of MPTV’s programs. They are a sponsor of our children’s literacy program, Arthur, and The Lawrence Welk Show, reprising the popular television show that originally aired from 1955 through 1982. Arthur airs Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Channel 10. The Lawrence Welk Show airs Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and repeats Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. on Channel 10. Jerry and Dorothy Holz established the Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation in 1996. Jerry’s father opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners, and Jerry, growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership, grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Holz Motors received numerous awards over the years, including Dealer of the Year Award from 2002-2008, and 2010, and the GMAC Champion of Life Award. Jerry Holz and his late wife Dorothy have valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community, and their foundation has been a proud underwriter of MPTV programs. According to Barb Weis, daughter of Jerry and Dorothy Holz, “The Jerome and Dorothy Holz Family Foundation is pleased to be an underwriting sponsor of MPTV’s quality children’s program Arthur and our perennial favorite, The Lawrence Welk Show. An important part of the Holz Family Foundation’s mission is to support the positive development of all children, and programs like Arthur enhance that development. I recall many happy moments as a child when our family and grandparents gathered round the television set to watch The Lawrence Welk Show. We hope it will bring back enjoyable memories of the era’s music for other viewers and their families.” MPTV is thankful for the underwriting support and commitment of the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation. Their underwriting support helps make it possible for MPTV to continue to offer these fine programs to our southeastern Wisconsin viewing audience. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. For further information, please contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu, or (414) 297-8008.

s of the writing of this letter, we are speaking with so many of you about how you’ll be feeling the night of March 6th, when we be bid farewell to the most successful drama in PBS history, Downton Abbey. Who would have thought that an estate in the British countryside and all of its inhabitants and visitors would capture the interests and imaginations of viewers all over the world the way that it has? No doubt, Downton Abbey is of the same caliber of entertainment as other Masterpiece series, but it’s also the one that came along at just the right time in our 21st century lives…a time when we are part of a rapidly changing world. How interesting is it to parallel some of our very own modern interests with the social mores, technological advances and negotiations to “keep up” with the world while remaining true to our core being? Everyone is wondering how the curtain will close on this acclaimed series, including us! Special community celebrations continue this month and next of the series, and we hope to see you at some of them. See page 4 for more information of how you can participate.

The grand finale of Downton Abbey coincides with the season’s grand on-air fundraising campaign this month. During the upcoming campaign, we celebrate Downton Abbey and the impact the series has had for PBS and its affiliate stations all over the country. We are hopeful that thousands of viewers will donate to support ALL of the nationally and locally produced programs seen on MPTV. We’ll be debuting new programs all month including ones from Celtic Thunder, Around the Corner with John McGivern, Yanni, and the Peggy Cappy yoga series. We will also pay tribute to legendary leaders of wisdom and the arts like

Dr. Wayne Dyer and David Bowie. Notable series like Finding Your Roots will have series finales this month, MotorWeek celebrates 35 years on the air and we’ll go behind the scenes of Mercy Street. In addition to stellar programming this month, we’re excited to share our newest Membership benefit for donors $60 and over in a year: MPTV Passport. MPTV Passport is an on-demand benefit providing viewers with over 1,000 public television programs, as recent as Downton Abbey, and from the archives of NOVA, Nature, Antiques Roadshow and so much more! Content can be viewed from any computer, tablet or mobile device. If you haven’t activated your account yet, or would like to increase your support to receive MPTV Passport, give us a call at 414-297-8020. The variety of entertaining and informative programs throughout this month’s schedule, and on-demand, are a reflection of our community interests as well as a demonstration of Milwaukee Public Television’s mission to educate, enlighten and information everyone in the communities we serve. Thank you for supporting this mission!

For many of our viewers, Sunday nights on Milwaukee Public Television will never quite be the same. For some very special Downton Abbey fans, even Monday afternoons will change. One of our members told us how she and her co-workers celebrated each episode of Downton. We were so interested that we headed out to see what all the fuss was about. Dr. Biller can tell the rest of the story.

Downton Abbey Meets Healthcare Julie Biller, MD and dedicated DA fan

I

have been a lifelong fan of all things PBS especially Masterpiece Theatre. I have fond memories of watching various series with my family and the discussions that followed. So you can imagine my joy when in 2010 I found kindred souls at my work place, the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital. It came up in a chance conversation raving about a new series Downton Abbey. Well one thing led to another and soon a few of us were winning converts to join the core group of Downton Abbey addicts.

One of our colleagues was having a special birthday and we decided to throw a Downton Abbey themed surprise party. This was a huge success, winning more people over to following the loves and losses of the Crawley family and the staff who serve them. With the success of the surprise party we started to have Monday afternoon teas to recap the Sunday evening episode. Some of these were very formal- costumes, tea foods, candelabras, etc; some very casual with only tea and lots of robust discussion, especially related to some of the medical issues which come up in the series. Could Matthew really have survived a spinal cord injury in 1918??? One dedicated and very talented member of the group has made special cupcakes which look like teacups or cakes in the shape of 1920’s hats! This opportunity to bond over a television show has been wonderful to see each other in a new light. It also helped with pleasant stress reduction in a fast paced health care system. MPTV has had several new members from our dedicated Downton Abbey fan group; others exploring the great variety of programming for that they did not know was available. We are all getting ready with lace hankies, teacups and tears at the thought of the end of the series.
