017 marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 into law. At the time, $20 million was granted to fund public radio and television stations committed to providing a strong voice for educational and informative programming at a high level of excellence and enrichment. Today, Milwaukee PBS is among the 1,400+ public media outlets in the nation, thanks to this important piece of legislature. And, with funding provided to the station from the government, you might be surprised to learn that the cost of public media per American is $1.35 each year. That’s surprising to a lot of people, but it’s true! You are one of over 35,000 individuals in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois who give voluntarily to Milwaukee PBS, and we thank you for it. The reasons people give to the station are as varied as the programs we air on Channels 10 and 36, and here are a few we saw recently that stood out: “I feel you connect me to our community and world views fantastically!” “I am committed to helping provide money to fund more positive and wholesome TV.” “We have enjoyed so many series that PBS has offered that we want to help, even if a little, so it can continue offering the best on television.”
