Bohdan Zachary I
t’s hard to imagine it has been almost a year—March 18, 2020 to be precise—since the day we learned we would need to vacate the Milwaukee PBS facilities on the MATC downtown campus because of an emerging pandemic. In a moment, COVID-19 changed everything and it continues to upend how we operate. There are so many things I miss, the camaraderie of staff, seeing teammates, participating in group meetings seated across the table from one another, the great lunchtime options at the MATC cafeteria. Then there are the viewer events that allowed us to see so many of you. I know at some point, hopefully soon, the vaccinations will make a difference on how we live and how we work. One of the events that was always exciting in pre-pandemic days was the annual Milwaukee PBS Appraisal Fair. I’m grateful to Cheri Riehle, the appraisal fair coordinator, for coming up with a great way to keep it going that is the next best thing to being there. It’s a virtual event that will happen Tuesday, March 23 at 5:30pm. Join us for “An Evening with Antiques and Valuables.” There is no cost to participate. The online event will feature local appraisers discussing the history, use and current marketability of your cherished items. All that’s required is signing up at milwaukeepbs.org/events. I look forward to seeing you there, online!

And finally, I can never thank you enough for your generous support of Milwaukee PBS. The strong investment of viewers like you in our community has kept the station strong. And, as you may have noticed from this month’s cover, it has also allowed for the return of one of MASTERPIECE’S most-loved programs, DOWNTON ABBEY. You can stream your favorite episodes right now with PBS Passport. Thank you for making this, and everything we do and Milwaukee PBS, possible. Sincerely, Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

Milwaukee PBS Highlights MATC Television & Video Production Students’ Programs Nothing exemplifies MATC’s focus on hands-on and outcomes-based learning like the annual Student Television Workshop series. MATC’s Television and Video Production students create a series of halfhour original programs that are produced all around Milwaukee, presented live and live streamed from the Milwaukee PBS studios and prepared for broadcast a few weeks later on Milwaukee PBS 36.1. Each student in the Advanced Broadcast Program Production class has spent two years honing their television skills. Creating their workshop programs allows students to identify a topic, write, produce, shoot, edit, and promote a program for broadcast. This years’ topics range from learning about Milwaukee landmarks, a look at photography
and art, sports in Milwaukee to the history of Milwaukee buildings, Wisconsin urban legends and late-night satire. Working with classmates and others in the community the students plan their half hour programs giving viewers a look at programs from the students’ perspective. This year Milwaukee PBS broadcasts 14 half-hour programs. The programs begin on March 21 and run through May 2. Milwaukee PBS 36.1 broadcasts these programs in the wee hours of the morning, typically at midnight, 12:30 am or 1:00 am. We hope you’ll tune in and check out these exciting new programs. Check listings for complete program details. Courtesy of John Unser
On the LOCAL SCENE 10THIRTYSIX™, ADELANTE AND BLACK NOUVEAU continue to tell critical, local, in-depth stories that highlight what’s happening in Milwaukee and beyond. Join John and the crew on their adventures around Wisconsin. This month visit Stoughton, Delavan, Grafton and an assortment of special places in southeastern Wisconsin the producers hand-picked. The Around the Map in Southeastern Wisconsin episode includes a stop by the Milwaukee County Zoo, Jones Island and a bell museum. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN – follows a young female marathoner who, despite living with a debilitating autoimmune disease, is running and blogging to empower others through social media. Dan Small joins Tari Costello's Waupun High School natural resources class on a trapping field trip in Dodge County. And Jeff Kelm talks with members of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club about the work being done to connect cultural traditions and contemporary sportsmen, women and children during an ice fishing outing in Green Bay. WISCONSIN SCENIC TREASURES: SOUTHERN VISTAS –This awe-inspiring program is a visually stunning trip through the skies and landscapes of Southern Wisconsin’s most beautiful natural places. New Documentary Explores the Life of Nancy Zieman
O
ver the course of 36 seasons and more than 900 episodes filmed from 1982 to 2017, Wisconsin’s own Nancy Zieman became a national public television icon. As host of Sewing With Nancy, she provided hands-on, project-based instruction for sewers and quilters of all skill levels in what remains the longest-running sewing series on public television. Her skills and connections in the sewing and quilting communities made her an inimitable forerunner in the do-ityourself television realm; but it was her calm, kind demeanor and gentle encouragements that made her an unexpected television celebrity. Now, three years after her death, a new documentary from PBS Wisconsin will take viewers beyond the Sewing With Nancy set to explore the life of this beloved television host, author, pattern maker, television producer, educator and entrepreneur. Featuring home video footage, photo archives, voice recordings and interviews with family, colleagues and fans, Nancy Zieman: Extraordinary Grace will give viewers a new look at a woman who lived life and all its successes and challenges with exceptional grace.
The hour-long film is a visual treasure trove of never-before-seen moments from Zieman’s life, from her diagnosis with Bell’s palsy as a toddler to the early days of her sewing career to the stops and starts that led her to host Sewing With Nancy. Longtime Sewing With Nancy fans will recognize early clips of the show, filmed in Zieman’s living room with a oneperson camera crew, and its eventual move into the PBS Wisconsin studio, located in Madison. Viewers will also learn more about the show’s evolution beyond its filming location and how Zieman’s knack for knowing what her viewers and consumers wanted kept sewers and quilters engaged for more than three decades. Today, Sewing With Nancy lives on as The Best of Sewing With Nancy and still airs on PBS stations nationwide including Saturdays on Milwaukee PBS 36.1 and Milwaukee PBS Create. Check listings for show times. You can stream full episodes anytime using the PBS Video App or at milwaukeepbs.org.
