ith March’s arrival, we can all look forward to longer daylight hours and milder temperatures. Spring may soon be just around the corner. This month we would like to recognize American Transmission Company, as one of the underwriting sponsors of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4. This season, this popular program features 13 communities including: East Troy, South Milwaukee, Menomonee Falls, and Silver City, to name just a few. Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4 airs on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 10 and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 36. American Transmission Company (ATC) provides electric transmission service throughout the Upper Midwest including the eastern half of Wisconsin. It was founded in 2001 as the first multi-state, transmission-only utility in the United States. Transmission lines are comparable to an interstate highway system, with high-voltage electricity traveling on transmission wires like cars on the road. American Transmission Company has more than 9,500 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 530 substations throughout the Upper Midwest, moving power from where it’s produced to electric distribution companies, who then distribute power to the homes and businesses they serve.

Anne Spaltholz, Communications Manager at American Transmission Company says, “American Transmission Company is pleased to be associated with Milwaukee Public Television and particularly Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4. MPTV is a local gem, and Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4 beautifully showcases the vibrancy of the people and places in area communities. It aligns so perfectly with what our company strives to do – to help keep the lights on, businesses running and communities strong. “ MPTV is glad to welcome American Transmission Company as one of our newest underwriters. We greatly appreciate their sponsorship of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4, and their commitment to MPTV. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

s is tradition for public television stations all over the United States, the month of March is a significant one from a fundraising perspective. Programs that have been scheduled through March 15th reflect the hallmark of programs that public television strives to bring to viewers.

Documentaries such as The Italian Americans, Rick Steves’ Dynamic Europe: Prague, Amsterdam and Berlin and The Jewish Journey: America explore the people and places that peak our curiosity. Musical programs will entertain with notable tunes, and historic moments. We are particularly excited for Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever. This iconic program, originally aired on network television in 1983, celebrated the success of the Motown record label and gave us a taste of what was in store for music fans in future years, most notably through the first time Michael Jackson “moonwalked” for the nation. Finally, leading up to its Season 3 premiere, Mr. Selfridge viewers will relive the American entrepreneur’s ongoing adventure in the department store business in London and the social mores of the early 20th Century that ensued. 30% of all individual funding to MPTV comes from those tuning in to programs during our fundraising months. To all who have invested in MPTV through pledge drives like this month’s, we thank you! Each and every gift brings programming that is shown 365 days a year in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

One of the most significant programs that has been made possible through the generosity of viewers throughout the year is this Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, from executive producer Ken Burns. This 6-hour program, based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book by Siddhartha Mukherjee, tells the complete story of cancer, from its first appearance in the fossilized remains of dinosaurs to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. Be sure to tune in starting March 30th for this fascinating program. With a blend of music, documentary, how-to and classic programming, we look forward to your viewership…and financial support of the station. Thank you for your ongoing support of Milwaukee Public Television.

hen MOTOWN 25: Yesterday • Today • Forever aired on NBC on May 16, 1983, it was an immediate sensation and became one of the most talked about concerts and TV specials ever. In an era before social media, MOTOWN 25 was a true water-cooler event, marking the first time that music fans saw Michael Jackson do the Moonwalk (aka: the six seconds that changed the world) in addition to many other iconic performances. Six months after the broadcast, the show deservedly won a George Foster Peabody Award and an Emmy® Award for Best Variety Program but has been unseen on television for over 20 years. Now, MY MUSIC and MPTV present the greatest performances from MOTOWN 25 on February 28th, at 8p.m., March 4th, at 7p.m. and March 13th, at 8p.m. on Channel 10. MOTOWN 25 was taped before a live audience and showcased virtually every key artist from the company’s inception including Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, The Miracles, The Temptations, Four Tops and many others. The show also featured guests who had been influenced by Motown artists. Linda Ronstadt performed a memorable duet with Smokey Robinson. As an added highlight, the historic evening was hosted by Richard Pryor, who was arguably the hottest comedian in the world at the

time. A seminal event in pop culture history, this concert event would establish the gold standard for all future televised concert events and go on to provide the backstory for the Tony®-nominated Broadway play, Motown The Musical. MY MUSIC Creator/Executive Producer TJ Lubinsky exclaims, “MOTOWN 25 was a huge inspiration to me as a 13 year-old kid. When I saw The Miracles reunite on stage, I knew it was a moment that would set my life’s calling in all the work I do today. I’m beyond thrilled to bring this special to public broadcasting stations.”

180 Days: Hartsville In 180 Days: Hartsville, viewers will experience a year in the life of one Southern town’s efforts to address the urgent demand for reform in American public schools, and watch what happens when the systems that can either fuel or diffuse that reform – bureaucracy, economic opportunity, and fixed mindsets – interact and intersect. Is Hartsville an anomaly, or do its successes point towards some transferrable and sustainable solutions? Can a community really change the fortunes of a generation by doubling down on their neighborhood schools? Or does the stark reality of the 21st century global economy outweigh the impact of one rural town’s efforts to prepare its children to compete in that economy?

180 Days: Hartsville will air Tuesday, March 17th, at 8p.m. on Channel 10. Visit mptv.org for details on a special screening of clips from 180 Days: Hartsville.

CANCER : THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES Executive Produced by Ken Burns and Directed by Barak Goodman, to air on

MPTV March 30th, March 31st and April 1st

K

en Burns presents CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES a three-part, six-hour documentary series directed by award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman will air on MPTV Channel 10 Monday, March 30th, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st.

CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES tells the comprehensive story of cancer, from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. At six hours, the film interweaves a sweeping historical narrative with intimate stories about contemporary patients, and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, within sight of lasting cures. The film comprises the following three episodes: Episode 1 (Premieres Monday, March 30th) MAGIC BULLETS: The search for a “cure” for cancer is the greatest epic in the history of science. It spans centuries and continents, and is full of its share of heroes, villains and sudden vertiginous twists. This episode follows that centuries-long search, but centers on the story of Sidney Farber, who, defying conventional wisdom in the late 1940s, introduces the modern era of chemotherapy, eventually galvanizing a full-scale national “war on cancer.” Interwoven with Farber’s narrative is the contemporary story of little Olivia Blair, who at 14-months old is diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which spreads to her brain and spinal column. The film follows her as she and her parents struggle with the many hardships and decisions foisted upon a cancer patient. She remains in full remission a year after her diagnosis, but is still on her journey to finish her three-year treatment plan. Episode 2 (Premieres Tuesday, March 31st) THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT: This episode picks up the story in the wake of the declaration of a “war on cancer” by Richard Nixon in 1971. Flush with optimism and awash with federal dollars, the cancer field plunges forward in search of a cure. In the lab, rapid progress is made in understanding the essential nature of the cancer cell, leading to the revolutionary discovery of the genetic basis of cancer. But at the bedside, where patients are treated, few new therapies become available, and a sense of disillusionment takes hold, leading some patients and doctors to take desperate measures. It is not until the late 1990s that the advances in research begin to translate into more precise targeted therapies with the breakthrough drugs Gleevec and Herceptin. Following the history during these fraught decades, the film intertwines the contemporary story of Dr. Lori Wilson, a surgical oncologist who is diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in both breasts in 2013. Her emotional and physical struggles with the disease provide a bracing counterpoint to the historical narrative. Episode 3 (Premieres Wednesday, April 1st) FINDING AN ACHILLES HEEL: This episode picks up the story at another moment of buoyant optimism in the cancer world: Scientists believe they have cracked the essential mystery of the malignant cell and the first targeted therapies have been developed, with the promise of many more to follow. But very quickly cancer reveals new layers of complexity and a formidable array of unforeseen defenses. In the disappointment that follows, many call for a new focus on prevention and early detection as the most promising fronts in the war on cancer. But other scientists are undeterred, and by the second decade of the 2000s their work pays off. The bewildering complexity of the cancer cell,

12

so recently considered unassailable, yields to a more ordered picture, revealing new vulnerabilities and avenues of attack. Perhaps most exciting of all is the prospect of harnessing the human immune system to defeat cancer. This episode includes patients Doug Rogers, a 60-yearold NASCAR mechanic with melanoma, and Emily Whitehead, a six-yearold child afflicted with leukemia. Each is a pioneer in new immunotherapy treatments, which the documentary follows as their stories unfold. Both see their advanced cancers recede and are able to resume normal lives. Also part of the documentary project, WETA has launched CancerFilms.org, an expansive website with social and interactive media components created in conjunction with the documentary. The project website features an innovative short film series executive produced by Ken Burns and created by Redglass Pictures, featuring individual cancer patients and caregivers. Additional films will be released in the weeks leading up to the March 30th broadcast premiere. The interactive website includes a mixture of produced and usergenerated content exploring the three intermingled strands of the series: a riveting historical documentary, an engrossing and intimate vérité film that focuses on current patients, and a scientific report. The website is intended for the vast cancer community of patients and survivors, family members, caregivers, scientists, clinicians and other healthcare providers , as well as the public at large. Participants can share their stories now at CancerFilms.org, engage with the project on Twitter via @CancerFilm or #CancerFilm, and visit the project on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CancerFilm. Visit mptv.org for details on your chance to attend a Cancer: Emperor of All Maladies special event coming in March. National underwriters: Genentech, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, David H. THE ITALIAN AMERICANS Trace the evolution of Italian Americans from the late 19th century to today, with Tony Bennett, David Chase, John Turturro, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Gay Talese and more. Once “outsiders” viewed with suspicion and mistrust, Italian Americans are today some of the most prominent leaders of U.S. business, politics and the arts. The series peels away myths and stereotypes to reveal a world uniquely Italian and uniquely American. 3/14, 11:30a.m. 10HD 16

MIDSOMER MURDERS

S

et in the deceptively idyllic fictional English county of Midsomer, the suspenseful drama MIDSOMER MURDERS is based on the popular novels of Caroline Graham. Featuring an eccentric cast of characters, ubiquitous red herrings, and quaint countryside scenery, this long-running crime series recalls classic public television British mysteries of the past. At the heart of the show is the perceptive and meticulous criminal investigator Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby.

MIA: A DANCER’S JOURNEY

M

ia Slavenska was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the 20th century, Croatia's greatest dancer, and a pioneer in American ballet. Caught in the maelstrom of 20th century political events, she was forced to leave her native Croatia at age twenty in order to continue to dance. Mia’s journey is retraced from tumultuous prewar Europe through her emergence as a glamorous ballerina of the Ballets Russes and a star attraction on stages across America, culminating with her return to her homeland.
