As March begins, we hope that the extreme cold of January and the dreary weather of February may soon be behind us. Perhaps spring may soon begin to make its presence felt – with a bit warmer and sunnier weather. Johnson Controls, with its world headquarters in Glendale, has been a consistent supporter of MPTV programs. Johnson Controls underwrites two of MPTV’s local series: Adelante and Black Nouveau. Adelante, a program that celebrates the rich heritage of Latinos, recently won an Emmy at the Chicago/Midwest Emmy awards on November 2nd for Outstanding Achievement of Public Affairs/Current Affairs Programs. Black Nouveau features interviews and profiles of African-American leaders in the community, and highlights positive perspectives of African-American life in the Greater Milwaukee area. This month Black Nouveau will be featuring profiles of African-American women. Adelante will feature the DelavanDarien school district, with the highest percentage of Latino students in Wisconsin, as it resumes its bilingual services, and explores how the Girl Scouts can improve the lives of Latino girls. With the financial support of Johnson Controls, MPTV is able to continue to offer viewers information and features on the Milwaukee area African-American and Latino communities with Adelante and Black Nouveau. Johnson Controls is a global diversified technology and industrial leader serving customers in more than 150 countries. The company’s 170,000 employees create quality products, services and solutions to optimize energy and operational efficiencies of buildings; lead-acid automotive batteries and advanced batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles; and interior systems for automobiles. Johnson Controls’ commitment to sustainability dates back to its roots in 1885, with the invention of the first electric room thermostat. Through its growth strategies and by increasing market share, Johnson Controls is committed to delivering value to shareholders and making its customers successful. In 2013, Corporate Responsibility Magazine recognized Johnson Controls as the #14 company in its annual “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list. For additional information, visit: www.johnsoncontrols.com. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV, by contacting Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu, or (414) 297-8008.

MPTV V-ME, WORLD & CREATE LISTINGS

Do you remember the first time you made a donation to support public television? Odds are that an MPTV fundraising drive was the moment you went from being a viewer of Channels 10 and 36 to a financial partner of MPTV. Each year, over 9,000 individuals make contributions during “Pledge Drives”. And, each one of those individuals has a different reason for supporting. Some give to support music programs which introduce our viewers to new artists, or bring about some great nostalgia from the past. Others tune into PBS partners like Suze Orman and Dr. Wayne Dyer who bring lifestyle observations that might help us learn a little bit more about ourselves. And still, others like to see programs on MPTV, such as Around the Corner with John McGivern and Wisconsin Foodie, that make our stations different from those in other states. Finally, many MPTV supporters have an annual tradition of renewing membership when we conduct a fundraising drive. The one thing we all share is the desire to support MPTV as a vibrant service to all of the communities we live in. We invite you to tune in over the next two weeks to discover some special new programs set to air, and to call in or visit online to support the offerings you’ll see.

18 & 19

10&36 DAYTIME

16-17

Of course, your contribution doesn’t just support a couple of weeks of shows; it supports 365 days of commercial-free, quality programs that you really cannot find anywhere else with your remote control. We look forward to presenting all of the programs you’ll see in this month’s issue of Fine Tuning. For a donor like you, we know you’ll find some of your favorites throughout the month. And, for viewers watching in the next few weeks, we are excited to welcome them as MPTV supporters during our March Fundraising Drive. Thank you for your support of Milwaukee Public Television.

F E AT U R E SUZE ORMAN’S FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS FOR YOU Premieres March 4, at 7 p.m. on Channel 10

- Suze Offers Viewers Her Expert Take on How to Manage Their Money Today -

S

uze Orman knows that everyone has financial issues and problems and in this new television special sharply focuses on helping individuals find financial solutions that fit their situation. As always, her advice is based not just on numbers, but grounded in a critical understanding of people and their emotional needs. A sparkling hour of television that will tangibly help viewers manage their money today and make smart choices toward a more economically secure tomorrow, SUZE ORMAN’S FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS FOR YOU is part of special programming premiering on MPTV beginning March 1. The central theme of SUZE ORMAN’S FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS FOR YOU is that financial decisionmaking should be guided by an understanding of “the goal of money,” which Suze perceptively defines as “to make you feel secure.” Financial solutions should work to fulfill that goal, and Suze stresses the importance of feeling comfortable with those decisions. Financial problems arise when we do things with money that do not seem “right” to us — despite pressures and advice from others.

4

In the program, taped at American University’s beautiful Greenberg Theatre in Washington, DC, Suze gives up-to-date advice on a broad set of financial issues, and responds with savvy, humor and empathy to specific questions from the enthusiastic audience. She insightfully covers a wide range of topics that will resonate with television viewers, including how to invest, whether to buy or rent a home, saving for retirement, what kind of life insurance to buy, wills and trusts, student loans and more. Suze Orman has been called “a force in the world of personal finance” and a “one-woman financial advice powerhouse” by USA Today. A two-time Emmy Award-winning television host, New York Times mega bestselling author, magazine and online columnist, writer/producer, and one of the top motivational speakers in the world today, Orman is undeniably America’s most recognized expert on personal finance.

Milwaukee Public Television’s locally-produced programs feature some interesting topics this March. Around the Corner with John McGivern visits Chippewa Falls, West Allis, Oconomowoc, and LaCrosse.

¡Adelante! highlights MIAD’s art exhibit, explores the influence of Girl Scouting on Latino girls, and stops by the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music.

The Arts Page focuses on Wisconsin artists to be featured on the 2014 Channel 10 Great TV Auction.

4th Street Forum discusses transportation issues and energy in Wisconsin.

Black Nouveau continues its series on Black Men in Prison.

2014 MPTV GREAT TV AUCTION

FEATURE ARTISTS These art pieces will be open for bid at the Realtors Home & Garden Show, on-line at greatTVauction.com, and at The 2014 MPTV Great TV Auction Brian Kuether of Greenfield is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Wisconsin Collection. Deeply inspired by the serenity of rural life and the natural world, Kuether began painting native Wisconsin scenes early in life. Kuether has created “Winters Journey – Tundra Swans” as a tribute to these mystical birds and their successful rise from endangerment in the 60s. Tundra swans mate for life and our pair glides along as they use the Wisconsin River for their migration to the coast. Printing is donated by HM Graphics. To view more of Kuether’s work, visit briankuetherartstudios.com. Chuck Weber of Waukesha is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Sports Collection. A Wisconsin native, Weber studied marketing and art at St. Norbert College, followed by an MBA from UWMadison and Marquette University. His impressionist style translates into high energy works and “Power Sweep” is no exception. The inspiration for this retro oil comes from "The Glory Years" of Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, as Fuzzy Thurston, Forrest Gregg, Bart Starr, and Jim Taylor execute the famous play. Printing is donated by Modern Ink. To view more of Weber’s work, visit weberportraits.com. Lynn Casper of Waukesha Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Century Collection. An Art History graduate of UW-Madison, Casper is well known for her highly acclaimed city "Streetscapes", maritime scenes and landscapes which evoke the rich flavor, optimism and vitality of days gone by. She has also produced contemporary scenes of Madison and Milwaukee and, over the past twenty five years, has extensively researched and skillfully detailed the landmarks and historical subjects of southeastern Wisconsin. Her fourth time as a Featured Artist for the Auction will be a dramatic addition to her collection. The piece, titled “Riverwalk Reflections”, is a spectacular night view of the Milwaukee River and its surroundings as seen from the Kilbourn Street Bridge under a full moon. Printing will be donated by Burton & Mayer. To view more of Casper’s work, visit lynncasperfineart.com.

Steve Slaske of Chicago Illinois, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s National Collection. Slaske holds a degree in architecture from the University of Wisconsin and his understanding and love of buildings is evident in his work. He wrote and illustrated the award-winning book, "Milwaukee, The Cream City Observed" and has work in the permanent collections of Northwestern Mutual Life, Miller Brewing Co., Milwaukee Public Library and the Radisson, Pfister and Marriott Hotels. The live music of Milwaukee and Chicago has inspired the creation of “Drawing Music”. Slaske finds the music and setting ultimately an intrinsic part of the artwork he creates. To view more of Slaske’s work, visit skylinecityprints.com.

(work in progress) JoAnn O’Hare of Waukesha is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Poster Collection. A Bachelors of Arts degree from Augustana College focusing on design and printmaking provides the academic structure for this photographer’s talent. O’Hare gives the Great TV Auction “Poppies – Papaver Orientale” as her first Featured Art piece. These two poppies exhibit a daring strength of bright color awash in the natural green background. Printing will be donated by Zimmerman Printing. To see more of O’Hare’s work, visit her permanent exhibit located at the Racine Art Museum in Racine, WI.

Mr. Selfridge Season II to Air on MASTERPIECE on MPTV 10.1 Sunday, March 30th at 8p.m. Jeremy Piven Returns in Highly-Rated Drama Mr. Selfridge marked Jeremy Piven’s return to television after his Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning performance in the hit series Entourage. “I’m absolutely delighted that MASTERPIECE viewers welcomed Mr. Selfridge into their homes,” said Piven. “Mr. Selfridge is a true ensemble piece, and audiences can look forward to seeing the return of their favorite characters and some intriguing new faces.” MASTERPIECE executive producer Rebecca Eaton said, “It is clear from our audience’s reaction that they want more of Harry Selfridge, his family and department store shopping! We’re happy to have Jeremy and the rest of the talented Mr. Selfridge cast in the MASTERPIECE family.”

F

ollowing its ratings success in the U.S., MASTERPIECE and PBS have announced a second season of Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven as the flamboyant American entrepreneur who founded the famous Selfridge’s department store. Season II will air on MASTERPIECE Classic this month. The first season of Mr. Selfridge reached nearly 15 million viewers over its eight episodes, with an average viewing audience of 4 million people an episode. An ITV Studios/MASTERPIECE coproduction, the season also had strong online viewing numbers, totaling over 1.1 million views during the season's run. In addition, Mr. Selfridge was recently honored with an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

Filmed in the UK, the second season picks up the story in 1914, as the store celebrates its fifth anniversary in business. With World War I imminent, the lives of everyone at Selfridge’s will inevitably be affected. “We are very excited to bring a second season of Mr. Selfridge to PBS stations nationwide, ”said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “This department store drama has charmed audiences with wonderful performances, intriguing plots and beautiful costumes--bringing a sparkle of glamour to our Sunday night lineup.” In addition to Mr. Piven, the returning cast includes Frances O’Connor as his wife Rose, Aisling Loftus as Agnes Towler, Katherine Kelly as Lady Mae, Grégory Fitoussi as Henri Leclair, Trystan Gravelle as Victor Colleano, Amanda Abbington as Miss Mardle, Tom Goodman-Hill as Roger Grove, and Ron Cook as Mr. Crabb. Additions to the ensemble include Polly Walker (John Carter), Cal Macaninch (Warriors, Wild at Heart) as Mr Thackeray and Aidan McArdle (Jane Eyre, Einstein’s Big Idea).

DR. WAYNE DYER: I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW

I

n the most personal program of his career, Dr. Dyer offers an intimate conversation about what his own personal experiences have taught him: There are no accidents, and all the choices we make and actions we take weave a life tapestry uniquely our own. Exploring the five principles that have guided his own choices, Dr. Dyer shows why it is important to have — and act on — a burning desire, why life’s lowest moments can reveal our true purpose, and how the principle of love allows us to see our lives more clearly and reach greatest awareness.

FATHER BROWN

B

ased on the short stories by G.K. Chesterton, Father Brown follows the kindly cleric as he solves crimes in his community. It is a quintessentially English world: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners' confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind.

Third Season of

CALL THE MIDWIFE

Premieres Sunday, March 30 at 7 p.m. on Channel 10 – BAFTA® Award-Winning Drama from Neal Street Productions Cements PBS as Destination for Drama; Season 2 Reaches Top 10 in PBS Ratings –

T

he third season of CALL THE MIDWIFE, which premiered to a record-breaking audience of 9.6 million viewers in the UK, opens in 1959 as the winds of change are sweeping through the country. Throughout the season, viewers will follow the joys and heartbreak of the midwives as they continue to care for members of the Poplar community and face management changes at Nonnatus House.

The third season takes viewers to 1959, the eve of the Swinging Sixties. The winds of change are sweeping through the country and the residents of Nonnatus House face some momentous changes of their own. Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, CALL THE MIDWIFE was created and written by Heidi Thomas (“Cranford,” “Upstairs Downstairs”) and directed by a line-up of female directors including Thea Sharrock (“The Hollow Crown: Henry V”) and Juliet May (“Miranda,” “Scott and Bailey,” “Stella”). The first season was the biggest new drama on BBC One in more than a decade, and the second season averaged a consolidated

viewership of more than 10 million in the U.K. CALL THE MIDWIFE completed its second season run in the U.S. in May 2013, and audiences and critics in the U.S. were equally effusive, with Season 2 breaking the top ten spot in ratings on PBS, scoring 58 percent above the 20122013 season-to-date primetime average, and claiming the title of Top Rated Drama on Amazon.com. CALL THE MIDWIFE stars Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee, along with Jenny Agutter (“The Railway Children,” “Spooks”) as Sister Julienne, Pam Ferris (“Little Dorrit,” “Darling Buds of May”) as Sister Evangelina, Miranda Hart (“Miranda”) as Chummy, Judy Parfitt (“Little Dorrit,” Girl With a Pearl Earring), who was nominated for a 2013 Satellite Award for her work as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George (“Hollyoaks,” “Doctors”) as Trixie Franklin, Bryony Hannah (Cemetery Junction) as Cynthia Miller, Laura Main (“Monarch of the Glen”) as Shelagh and Cliff Parisi (“EastEnders”) as Fred. Vanessa Redgrave provides the voice of the mature Jenny.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN: HEDY LAMARR

W

ith her smoldering femme fatale looks, Austrian Hedy Lamarr was known as the most beautiful woman in film. She was also one of the most controversial, launching her film career by performing cinema’s very first nude scenes. Released in 1932, 'Ecstasy' shocked audiences, was banned in Germany, in America and by even the Pope. But, that's not all Hedy did. Most impressive of all, she invented a system designed to allow Allied submarines to guide torpedoes to their targets. Her invention was developed to form the basis of all our wireless communications today.

CAN EATING INSECTS SAVE THE WORLD?

H

ow would you feel about eating deep fried grasshoppers, ant egg salad or barbequed tarantulas? Stefan Gates immerses himself in the extraordinary world of hardcore insect eating as he discovers that insects aren't just healthy, they have a low carbon footprint that might help save our planet. As well as hunting a variety of edible insects, Stefan travels to Thailand to meet a United Nation's team promoting bug consumption and witnesses the mass production of crickets, the country's fast food favorite.

S

et in 1952, as England prepares for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, THE SCAPEGOAT is a one-off drama that tells the provocative story of two very different men who have one thing in common — a face. Matthew Rhys (ABC's Brothers & Sisters, The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Sheridan Smith (Gavin & Stacey) Andrew Scott (Sherlock) and Eileen Atkins (Doc Martin, Upstairs Downstairs) star in an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, The Birds, Don't Look Now).
