Letter from
Bohdan Zachary & Kim Sosa On February 19, 1968, public television stations all over the United States were introduced to a gentle, cardigan-wearing man who greeted all with a tune about a “beautiful day in the neighborhood”. Mister Rogers would spend the next 30 minutes that day, and each day for decades with a neighborly “visit” that would be as enriching as one spent with a friend any day of the week. Over the course of the last 50 years, Mister Rogers Neighborhood has guided millions of children in how to interact with young and old. He’s shown us how it is to work through the emotions we feel, sometimes angry, sometimes sad and sometimes purely joyful. He showed us the power of imagination with the help of a little red trolley that took us all to the “Land of Make Believe” where we could experience the lives of King Friday, Lady Elaine Fairchilde, X the Owl and others, all voiced by Mister Rogers by the way! Fred Rogers did not only gratefully use the medium of television to help children learn. He was also a champion of public broadcasting. In 1969, Mister Rogers presented a statement on PBS Funding to the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C. In less than 7 minutes, his description of public television’s approach to programs for children, along with a recitation of lyrics from “What Do You Do With the Mad That You Feel?” drew a response from Senator Pastore of “Looks like you just earned the 20 million dollars.”
Rogers Neighborhood’s premiere, we invite you to join us March 6th at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 10 for Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like, hosted by Michael Keaton, acclaimed actor, and former stagehand on this seminal children’s program. We think that when watching it, you’ll be reminded of the incredible impact this program has had for generations. Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like is part of special programming this month on public television stations all across the country. We look forward to debuting this, and dozens of other specials that will both entertain and educate all of our audiences all month long. Thank you

he Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Ernest C. & Florence M. Schocke Fund and the David A. & Nancy E. Putz Fund are production underwriters of Milwaukee PBS’s perennial favorite, Around the Corner with John McGivern™, Season 7. Their generous funding has been critical to the production success of the series since 2013. Founded in 1915 as the Milwaukee Foundation, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation is a philanthropic community leader. It partners with donors, nonprofits, and community leaders to develop strategies which strengthen communities and address persistent challenges. Through the generosity of donors contributing to funds with the foundation, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation focuses on improving children’s educational outcomes, such as Milwaukee Succeeds; strengthening the livability and safety of neighborhoods; reducing poverty and increasing the region’s economic vitality; and promoting racial equity and enhancing relationships among diverse populations to create opportunities for all to more fully engage in civic life. According to Ellen Gilligan, president and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, “The appeal of Around the Corner with John McGivern™ is the way it allows viewers to feel more connected to their community and one another. Educating others and strengthening relationships among neighbors is of great interest to Foundation donors, and supporting Milwaukee PBS honors their wishes while showcasing the assets of Wisconsin’s diverse communities.” Milwaukee PBS is deeply appreciative of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s vision, commitment and support of Around the Corner with John McGivern™, Season 7. March 6th, at 7p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 New Star-Studded One-Hour Special Hosted by Michael Keaton is a Heartfelt Tribute to the Beloved Children’s Television Series That Turns 50 This Year
M
ISTER ROGERS: IT’S YOU I LIKE, a celebrity-filled, hour-long special, celebrates Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the pioneering PBS series that premiered nationally 50 years ago and became an iconic and enduring landmark in the world of children’s television and beyond. Cast members from the groundbreaking series share their personal perspectives and insights in this new production, which pays tribute to television’s longest-running children’s series, still broadcast on many PBS stations today. The program also features interviews with numerous celebrities who have been influenced and inspired by Fred Rogers, a modest man who always said, “I am not a teacher, I simply help children learn.” Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand and made appearances on the series in the 1970s, hosts the special. Judd Apatow, Joyce DiDonato, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Kratt, John Lithgow, Yo-Yo Ma and son Nicholas Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Sarah Silverman, Esperanza Spalding and Caroll Spinney reveal their favorite memories from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, while Joe Negri (“Handyman Negri”), David Newell (“Mr. McFeely”) and Joanne Rogers, Fred’s widow, share their personal stories. Also featured are performances from the archives by Tony Bennett, The Empire Brass Quintet, Hillary Hahn, Margaret Hamilton, Yo-Yo Ma and Nicholas, Wynton Marsalis and Perlman. The nearly 900 episodes created by Fred Rogers encompass topics that resonate to this day with adults and children alike. Favorite segments, such as a visit with Koko the Gorilla, Big Bird’s appearance in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe as well as trips to the Crayola Factory and the Radio Flyer Wagon Company, are highlighted. 50th Anniversary Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood / Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Theme Week on PBS KIDS Just prior to the upcoming special premiering on PBS next month, PBS KIDS will mark the 50th anniversary milestone with a week-long programming event featuring back-to-back episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and award-winning animated spin-off Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood from The Fred Rogers Company. The broadcast event takes place throughout the week of February 26 and will include a new episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, as well as a special PBS KIDS Family Night on the 24/7 channel and live stream March 2-4. Each day, PBS KIDS will pair Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood episodes with the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood episodes that inspired them, with complementary themes such as dealing with loss and coping with angry feelings. Episodes include: • February 26: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “Daniel’s Fish Dies/Daniel’s Strawberry Seeds” (NEW) and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood “Death of a Goldfish” • February 27: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “The Tiger Family Grows/Daniel Learns About Being a Big Brother” and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood “Families” • February 28: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “Visiting Grandpere/The Tiger Family Goes Home” and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood “Grandparents” • March 1: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “Friends Help Each Other/Daniel Helps O Tell a Story” and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood “Friends” • March 2: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “Daniel Gets Mad/Katerina Gets Mad” and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood “Mad Feelings”
