very Monday through Friday, children in the greater Milwaukee community enjoy fun, engaging, quality children’s programs because of the generous commitment of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. Jane Bradley Pettit was committed to improve the lives of all children from all socio-economic walks of life. Because of her legacy and support, Milwaukee Public Television continues to offer high-quality programs that both children and their parents look forward to watching. PBS shows such as Sesame Street, now in its 46th year, and other children’s programs such as Martha Speaks, Super Why, Curious George and Sid the Science Kid, engage and stimulate children’s imagination and mental development. These acclaimed PBS Kids shows are created specifically to help bridge the literacy gap, and to increase language development and math skills. PBS Kids programs such as Arthur and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood also model important social skills for children, such as empathy, generosity, and courtesy. Shows like Curious George inspire kids to explore science, engineering, and math. Wild Kratt’s animated characters Chris and Martin Kratt –zoologists in real life, teach kids scientific concepts about animals in their natural habitat. In 2013-2014, almost two-thirds of Wisconsin elementary school children did not achieve proficient or advanced reading scores, while nearly 50% were not proficient or advanced in mathematics. It is imperative that Milwaukee Public Television continue our mission, to carry programs that encourages and inspires children to read and learn. According to JoAnn Culp Youngman, Director the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation, “Jane Bradley Pettit knew the importance of reaching out to children, not only to expand their knowledge, but to foster their hopes and dreams in life. The love of reading enriches the lives of children. MPTV programming provides an opportunity to increase children’s literacy by stimulating their imagination through education and entertainment. The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation is pleased to continue the legacy that Mrs. Pettit began over 20 years ago.” The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation’s generous gift is one of the primary sources of funding for our award-winning educational children’s programs on Milwaukee Public Television. MPTV is proud of this collaboration with the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation because we share similar goals – to strengthen local communities by supporting the positive development of all children. Jane Bradley Pettit’s legacy of commitment to children’s educational development continues to live on in her commitment to Milwaukee Public Television’s children’s literacy programs. omething has been happening in the fundraising office here at MPTV. Donors are changing how they give to the station – from one annual gift per year – to ongoing monthly contributions! These donors, the MPTV Sustaining Partners, are growing rapidly as a part of the entire base of supporters for public broadcasting throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Approximately 4,500 donors to MPTV are Sustaining Partners. These individuals give small, budget-friendly amounts to the station each month ranging from $5/month to over $100/month. Each donor has elected to have his/her monthly gifts automatically taken from a credit card or checking account, safely and securely. Once the giving method is established, that’s it! MPTV Sustaining Partners have provided a steady source of reliable revenue that helps with station operations every month of the year. MPTV Sustaining Partners are also active participants in the station saving money on the paper, postage and other resources that are a part of sending annual renewal notices for your support. Because Sustaining Partner support renews automatically, renewal reminders do not have to be sent. The thousands of dollars saved are more that can be utilized in bringing more new and diverse programs to everyone. And, it’s an environmentally friendly option, since less paper forms are used for annual giving! In addition to the elimination of renewal notices being sent each year, the benefits of MPTV Sustaining Partner support include: option to select a thank-you gift once per year during MPTV Pledge Drives, an annual summary for tax-planning purposes, subscriptions to

Fine Tuning Magazine and the Member Insider newsletter, the flexibility to change your giving amount at any time, plus much more. With continuous advancements in technology, more and more people are tending to monthly financial matters with a click of a button transferring funds from a bank account or credit card to utility companies, magazine subscriptions and even charitable contributions. We are happy to offer this option of contributing, in addition to annual giving to MPTV. To learn more about how you can convert your giving to an MPTV Sustaining Partner membership, call us at 414-297-8020 or email us at mptvsupport@matc.edu. Regardless of the way you make your annual contribution to MPTV, we are sincerely thankful for each and every one of the contributions that help make Milwaukee Public Television such a valuable service to all! Sincerely,

Ellis Bromberg

ore than two million men and women serve in America’s all-volunteer military force, and another three million are their husbands, wives, sons and daughters. Yet over the course of two long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the stories — and the service — of these military families have often been overlooked. In a revealing two-hour documentary special presented by Bob Woodruff, The Homefront will bring the true stories of these military families to a PBS audience. With unprecedented access and filmed over 14 months, The Homefront creates a series of intimate portraits — following families through the difficulties of deployment, the joys of homecoming, and the challenges of reintegrating as a family after many months apart. General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recalls in his interview for The Homefront a time when the military’s view on families was summed up by the phrase, “if the Army wanted you to have a family, they would have issued you one.” Now, he says, “the strength of the armed forces of the United States is as much about its families as it is about its combat capability.” In The Homefront, viewers will meet a cross-section of America’s military community: Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, 4

and Airmen, some in the active duty force, and some in the National Guard and Reserve. Representing many ranks, and drawn from across the country, these families illustrate what it means to serve. From an Army Staff Sergeant torn between family and military duty, to a Marine Gunnery Sergeant struggling to reconnect with his wife and children after a long deployment, and to a Navy Command Master Chief whose husband has given up his own career to raise their children, The Homefront reveals that in the military, family life is never routine. For these families, their dedication to service means that the possibility of drastic change or a dangerous deployment is always present. To them, normal means something entirely different than it does to civilians: frequent separations, regular moves, and constant adjustment. But these families also find unique rewards in the military lifestyle — to them, the camaraderie and sense of purpose can’t be found anywhere else. The military lifestyle is one that most Americans will never experience — and may never even encounter. But as The Homefront makes clear, now more than ever it is important to understand these families and their story — one of pride, patriotism, sacrifice and resilience.

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE: CARING FOR MOM AND DAD One day most of us will have to face many hard issues regarding the care of our aging parents. For some, that day comes gradually. For others, it comes without a moment's notice. In either case the big question is, "Are you ready?" Barbara McVicker is one of the nation's leading authorities on eldercare. Through humor, tears and inspiring care giving stories, Barbara gives hope to viewers assuring them they are not alone. Most importantly, audiences will leave with the essential information and tools they will need to navigate care giving so they can move from crisis to planning. 5/10, 3p.m. 36HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

L

ong before 9/11, a far deadlier, littleknown attack from the ocean depths struck our shores, lasting three-and-a-half years and claiming 5,000 lives. Now, famed undersea explorer Bob Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic, investigates the wreck of one of the attack craft, a German submarine that lies at the bottom of the gulf just a few miles off New Orleans. U-166 was part of a highly successful U-boat operation that caught East Coast cities almost completely unprepared.

Memorial Day Programs Milwaukee Public Television honors veterans this month culminating in the Memorial Day Celebration Concert on May 24th. We are pleased to present these programs to tell their stories, to remember their struggles, and to salute their heroism. Thank you!

MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN WAR MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN WAR conveys the human costs of military conflict through deeply personal accounts of the Korean War (1950-1953) by four Korean American survivors. Decades later, each person reunites with relatives in North Korea, conveying beyond words the meaning of family loss. These stories belie the notion that war ends when the guns are silenced and foreshadow the future of countless other displaced by ongoing military conflict today. 5/3, 10:30 a.m. 10HD

ESCAPE IN THE PACIFIC: 1943 ESCAPE IN THE PACIFIC: 1943 delivers a dramatic, gripping account of one of the most remarkable incidents of World War II - the only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp. On April 4, 1943, 10 American prisoners of war - survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March and the Fall of Corregidor - and two Filipino convicts carried out a daring escape from one of Japan's most notorious prison camps. 5/5, 11p.m. 10HD and 5/24, 10:00p.m. 10HD

VIETNAM WAR STORIES Telling emotional stories that haven’t been heard before, veterans recount their experiences of the Vietnam War. Veterans from all branches of military service share moving stories of triumph and loss on the field of duty, of sacrificing nearly everything on the battlefield and of the strong bonds of brotherhood and companionship in the ranks. 5/11, 11p.m. 10HD

KOREA - THE FORGOTTEN WAR IN COLOUR KOREA - THE FORGOTTEN WAR IN COLOUR offers a unique insight into a conflict that saw East confront West, communism challenge liberal democracy and Korean fight Korean in a bloody civil war. The program uses first-hand accounts, a dramatic musical score and recently discovered original color film to shed light on this important historical event. 5/12, 11p.m. 10HD

TED BELL AND THE RIDGE Retired Col. Ted Bell became The Citadel's most decorated World War II veteran for his valor in holding a rugged ridge on the Pacific island of Okinawa, but the deaths of so many of his men in his Easy Company of the 77th Infantry Division weighed on his mind as the decades passed. 5/18, 11:30p.m. 10HD

THE LINCOLN AWARDS: A CONCERT FOR VETERANS & THE MILITARY FAMILY Enjoy a concert in celebration of the Lincoln Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement and excellence in providing opportunities and support to veterans and military families. 5/24, 1p.m. 36HD

THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT Honoring our American heroes for over 25 years, the NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the 26th annual broadcast of this night of remembrance that airs live from the West Lawn. 5/24, 7p.m. 10HD

LOOKING OVER JORDAN: AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE WAR The Civil War began as a means of preserving the Union. However, to nearly four million African Americans, it held a much more personal promise. Determined to claim basic human rights, these former slaves-turned-soldiers fought valiantly for the Union – and many sacrificed their lives for the cause. The program chronicles the black experience in the South before, during and after the war. 5/24, 11:30p.m. 36HD

THE HOMEFRONT View intimate portraits of America's military families, with unprecedented access to soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen and women in the all-volunteer military. The revealing documentary tells stories of pride and patriotism, sacrifice and resilience. 5/25, 8p.m. 10HD

RETURN TO PEARL Host Mark Siegrist travels with nineteen World War II veterans from around Wisconsin who returned to Pearl Harbor in June of 2012. He captures their memories, stories, thoughts and feelings about the event that catapulted the United States into World War II. For many of the veterans, this is the first time talking about those experiences. 5/25, 11p.m. 10HD

OMAHA BEACH: HONOR AND SACRIFICE Omaha Beach: Honor and Sacrifice tells the very personal stories of several veterans as they return to Omaha Beach and the celebration in Normandy, France that continues to this day as a result of their acts of courage and determination on June 6, 1944. 5/26, 11p.m. 10HD

JOHN GLENN: A LIFE OF SERVICE JOHN GLENN: A LIFE OF SERVICE captures the pivotal events in John Glenn's life: his humble beginnings in Depression-era Ohio, his life-changing ride-along with a barnstormer, his enlistment following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, his 122 combat missions during World War II and the Korean War, his envelope-pushing exploits as a Naval test pilot, and his transition to astronaut during the Cold War. 5/27, 9p.m. 10HD

Sail with us! D-DAY 360

D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate mines, fearsome beach obstacles and hundreds of miles of barbed wire, while dodging bullets fired by German defenders. This film takes advantage of LiDAR technology to recreate the landscape and allow viewers to switch effortlessly between the macro and the micro — pulling back for the big picture and zooming in to a close-up of a single soldier. 5/27, 11p.m 10HD
