Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
Have you ever wondered what it would take for astronauts to visit Mars?
Speculation about visiting Mars has been mostly through Sci-fi programs, but this month INDEPENDENT LENS presents SPACE: THE LONGEST GOODBYE. NASA’s goal to send astronauts to Mars would require a three-year absence from Earth, during which communication in real time would be impossible due to the immense distance. Meet the psychologists whose job is to keep astronauts mentally stable in outer space, as they are caught between their dream of reaching new frontiers and the basic human need to stay connected to home. SPACE:
THE LONGEST GOODBYE premieres May 7th at 10PM on Channel 10.1.
May 21st at 8PM AMERICAN EXPERIENCE premieres THE RIOT REPORT. On July 27th, 1967, President Lyndon Johnson televised an address to the nation and described “a week such as no nation should live through: a time of violence and tragedy.” By the time order was restored, 43 people were dead and 2,000 buildings burned to the ground. Racial disorders were reported in seventy cities. What happened? Why did it happen? And what could be done to prevent it from happening again? Johnson appointed an elevenmember Kerner Commission to answer those questions.
The premiere of MARYLAND ON MASTERPIECE follows two estranged sisters who reunite to unearth the truth about their mother’s sudden death and her double life on the Isle of Man. It’s not so much a murder mystery as it is a compelling tale of two siblings opening up to each other as they work out a string of family secrets. May 5th at 8PM.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FUTURE: TOGETHER
Humans are inherently social and throughout history our unique capacity for cooperation has set us apart. As we grow and evolve, the internal changes we enact have the potential to impact those around us, our broader communities and societies.
5/1, 8PM 10.1
If you missed the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS GERSHWIN PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG, it’ll repeat on May 3rd at 9PM on Channel 36.1. I had the opportunity of a lifetime to be in the audience for this! Elton John and Bernie Taupin were honored with the Gershwin Prize and renditions of their songs by Brandi Carlile, Metallica, Garth Brooks, Annie Lennox, Charlie Puth and Joni Mitchell. So much talent on one program!
Another great month of science, music, drama and so much more supported by YOU!
Thank you,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General ManagerStudent Ops “Takes Over” Milwaukee PBS 36.1 on May 4
For more than 40 years, MATC Television and Video Production students have shared their work with the community through Milwaukee PBS. Student Ops Day allows students to walk in the shoes of television professionals. They assume real-life roles for the project such as executive producer, producer, editor, videographer, promotions and many others. This hand-on approach is a critical component to the success of the program.
Student supervising producer Nolwin Guilarte explains why this project is an important day. “This is an excellent and unique opportunity for students to have the experience of taking charge for a full day of station programming. It gives them a hint of what it is like when they get a real job after graduation,” Guilarte said.
Kevin Pulz, MATC TV & eProd production chair says Student Ops Day makes an important difference in the program. “Ops Day is by far the one academic/production event that represents the successful 65-yearold education mission of Milwaukee PBS at MATC. Pulz explained. “It’s an opportunity and experience that only can be offered at an institution that provides a technical education in video, but also proudly provides an important community resource through the broadcast resources found at Milwaukee PBS.”

The iconic PBS series looks back at fifty years of ground-breaking scientific programming, with an awe-inspiring lineup of new specials and initiatives in 2024
5
0 years ago, the PBS series NOVA filled a gap in broadcast television — delivering entertaining and informative science stories to audiences at a time when there were very few science shows on the air. The program debuted on March 3, 1974, setting a new standard for science documentary storytelling and becoming one of PBS’s flagship series.
“Science and technology are so deeply embedded in our lives, the need for accurate and engaging science communication is even greater today than it was 50 years ago,” said NOVA Co-Executive Producer Julia Cort.
“We’re proud that NOVA continues to play a crucial role, not only informing the American public about the most important stories in science, but inspiring audiences with profound discoveries about our world and our universe that only science can provide.”
Throughout 2024, NOVA will roll out a series of digital initiatives, content, education and outreach activities, and a robust new slate of programming to celebrate its 50th anniversary. All of these plans will center around key scientific advancements of the past five decades as well as discoveries and issues that are central to our present and future.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Barbara S.
Donor Says Milwaukee PBS Makes a Difference
Barbara S. values education, family, balanced public affairs reporting and Milwaukee PBS. As a lifelong learner, Barbara has dedicated her life to being informed and educated about her community and country.
She credits her Mount Mary education as giving her a great start in her career. Her freshman year she got a full scholarship to Mount Mary.
“It was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received,” she said. “It put me on the road to life.”
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Mary and became a teacher. She married and had three boys - Gregory, Tom and Andy who brought her great joy. Eventually, she divorced. It was during that time that she decided to try a new career. She went back to Mount Mary and studied art
and interior design. That led to her American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) certification, successful jobs, expertise and financial security. She began her own interior design business on Florida’s west coast and in Milwaukee. She came back to live in Milwaukee again when her family needed her.
Milwaukee PBS is a huge part of her life. She is especially passionate about PBS’ public affairs programming. “I am a promoter for PBS NEWSHOUR. It is the closest to two sides, discussing both sides, on an educated level,” she said. “You don’t find that in other broadcasts.” She reserves her Friday evenings for PBS and has even turned down outings to make sure she can watch. She likens PBS programming to a college offered class that you can take without having to pay for the
credits. She likes almost all programs on PBS including any programming Ken Burns does as well as ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL and other dramas.
“If there was no PBS, I’d throw away my TV,” she exclaimed.

A HALLOWED HOME FOR HEROES
This documentary steps back in time to uncover the fascinating story of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, a National Historic Landmark. It's origins trace back to President Abraham Lincoln’s last legislative act and an overlooked group of young women who were feminists before their time. 5/29, 5PM 10.1

Learning how to respond to our emotions takes a lot of practice. When we pause and examine the situation, we can make better decisions. Here are four ways you can help your child stop and think through decisions.
Model the “Think-Through” Strategy
Just like viewers can get inside Alma’s head in ALMA’S WAY, we can talk through our thinking with our kids. As you talk through your dilemmas and family challenges, you can also enlist your kids help. For example, “You two got in a fight tonight because you both wanted to play with the same toy at the same time. What could we do next time that happens? Who has an idea?”
Instead of Jumping in with Solutions, Help Them Reflect
Sometimes when our kids come to us with a problem, we want to jump in and fix the situation. But when we solve their problems for them, they don’t get to practice solving them on their own and that’s how they build authentic confidence. Engage in a conversation that helps them think through the situation.
Use Visualization Strategies
When Alma stops to think, she visualizes what just happened, looking for cues and clues about what to do next. We can do the same exercise with our children.

Helping Your Child Think Through Decisions
Start imaging what a better solution would be to any situation. Help kids visualize what a step-by-step solution would be.
Notice When Children Do Stop and Think
When we notice children’s positive choices – and describe back what we saw – we are giving them information they can use in the future. My favorite way to give praise to kids is to start with “I noticed…”
When we help kids make space to think through their challenges, we give them tools that will last a lifetime.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN 80TH ANNIVERSARY
Beginning with their first collaboration on “Oklahoma!” in 1943, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II revolutionized Broadway by integrating music and dance with well-crafted storylines to create a cohesive new form of musical theater.
With a string of blockbusters including “Carousel,” “South Pacific,” “The King and I,” “Flower Drum Song” and “The Sound of Music,” the duo garnered 34 Tony Awards along with 15 Academy Awards for their film adaptations.
