Doing Good Around the Corner… With Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin

With the winter weather now a distant memory, many Wisconsinites

find themselves exploring the great outdoors, especially in their own local communities. Whether looking for ideas or places to visit, or celebrating well-known hot spots, MPTV’s local production “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” will give you something to smile about. This month, watch as John explores the communities of Bay View, Wauwatosa, Riverwest, and Cedarburg. As one of our local sponsors of “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin cares for its community. Goodwill is woven into the fabric of the neighborhoods we both serve. The Goodwill mission is based in work—giving people a hand up not a hand out. Last year, Goodwill served more than 53,000 individuals including dislocated workers and people with disadvantages or disabilities, helping many of those individuals learn new skills and become successfully employed. In addition to helping individuals, Goodwill helps employers by providing a ready and motivated workforce. Goodwill is also a large employer, with 5,700 employees at 85 locations throughout the 23county territory in southeastern Wisconsin and metropolitan Chicago. Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin is the largest of the 165 Goodwills in North America. Through their 52 Goodwill Store & Donation Centers, Goodwill provides a convenient place to shop and donate, with revenue from the sale of these items funding mission services. By shopping at and donating to Goodwill, you make a positive difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities in Wisconsin. As their billboards read, “You Donate, We Train, People Work.” MPTV is proud of this collaboration with Goodwill Industries. Goodwill supports MPTV because our goals are similar – to strengthen local communities by empowering the people who live and work right here in our neighborhood. Sponsoring a show like “Around the Corner with John McGivern” is just a natural fit for an organization like Goodwill, which has an established presence and plays a vital role in the very communities that John highlights. Find out more at goodwillsew.com & Watch John explore Bay View on May 9th!

Iaref you ’re reading this column in late April or early May, chances good you can turn on your TV right now to Channel 10.1 to see THE 2013 GREAT TV AUCTION, our biggest event this month. With its $1 million goal, it is the largest public TV auction in the entire country, a significant revenue line in our annual budget. Since the first AUCTION in 1969, it has grown to be a popular, much-anticipated event in these parts! So we encourage your participation as a donor, as a bidder, as a viewer, as a volunteer – or best yet, all of the above – for this year’s version, “One Hula of an Auction.” Among the reasons THE AUCTION is so popular with people who love Milwaukee Public Television is that while folks know of its importance as a fundraiser, it’s also quite a lot of fun! But it’s not the only fundraising activity that our viewers can become involved with, enjoy, and benefit from. Here are a few that may not be as well-known as THE AUCTION: • TRAVEL WITH MPTV is a new program that offers our fans the opportunity to experience unique travel experiences with compelling itineraries, learning themes, and public TV personalities. In the works are: a visit to Washington, D.C., to meet with Gwen Ifill, Scott Simon, and Ric Burns for discussions about politics and current events; luxury cruises which include the best of the Middle East, India, Thailand, Singapore, and through the Panama Canal to South America; and delightful Mississippi riverboat cruises aboard the American Queen steamboat which will focus on the Civil War, feature an American Presidents fall foliage voyage, and an ANTIQUES ROADSHOW adventure in the antebellum South. For more information, please call our partners at Uncommon Journeys (888-508-3401) or e-mail info@artfultravelers.com. Your participation generates a donation to MPTV. • THE MPTV CRUISERS is another great travel program we offer each year. The upcoming trip, January 10-19, 2014, is an exciting New Orleans/Western Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Sunrise. There will be two days and nights exploring New Orleans, followed by seven days cruising to Mahogany Bay, Belize City, and Cozumel. For more information, call our good friend Cheryl Wolf at 262-502-0498 or write her at cwolf@cruiseone.com. A portion of your fare supports MPTV.

• If you’re thinking about selling your car, boat, motorcycle, truck, or other vehicle, please consider the MPTV VEHICLE DONATION PROGRAM instead. It’s extremely simple: call 855-240-6788 toll-free and we’ll take care of the rest, including pick-up, at absolutely no cost to you. Once your vehicle has been sold, you’ll be sent a receipt for your tax records, and the sale proceeds will be donated to MPTV in your name. And of course, you’ll be supporting all the programs you love on MPTV with your donation! • Please consider PLANNED GIVING opportunities: supporting MPTV, a service which uses television to educate, inform, and inspire, is a rewarding way to leave a living legacy. Many people do not consider gift planning for fear that they don’t have a large enough estate. But bequests of any size are appreciated at MPTV, and whether you wish to donate an entire estate, a fixed dollar amount, or a percentage of your assets, bequests are easy to make. Our Karen Van Hoof (414-2978004; vanhoofk@matc.edu) can walk you through the options, even if you already have an existing will. Finally, as we “celebrate” Tax Day” this month, remember that all gifts to MPTV – be it your membership contribution, your donated vehicle, your donation to THE GREAT TV AUCTION – are tax-deductible to the full-extent that the law allows. That’s just one more reason to contribute: you help the station while helping yourself at the same time!

CONSTITUTION USA PBS TO AIR

with Peter Sagal

ON TUESDAYS, PREMIERING MAY 7 AT 8p.m. ON CHANNEL 10

Popular NPR Host Hits the Road on Motorcycle to Scrutinize America’s Most Revered — and Misunderstood — Document

C ONSTITUTION USA with Peter Sagal takes viewers on a fast-paced, surprising journey across the nation to examine the 4,418 words — and 27 amendments — that made America. The series coincides with the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution. For the month-long series, premiering Tuesday, May 7, 8p.m. on Channel 10, Sagal, host of NPR’s popular Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, travels cross-country — from Tyler, Texas, to Missoula, Montana; from Cranston, Rhode Island, to Berkeley, California — on a customized red, white and blue Harley-Davidson to find out what the Constitution means in the 21st century, how it unites us as a nation and how it has nearly torn us apart. Sagal talks with ordinary Americans who are struggling with issues of affirmative action, same-sex marriage, voting rights, the role of government and equal protection. “There is one thing that sets us apart from most other nations in the world and that is our Constitution,” says Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, whom Sagal interviews for CONSTITUTION USA. “It serves every American every day. No citizen can be denied due process of law or equal protection under our laws. We are truly blessed.” At a time when polls indicate that only 38 percent of Americans can name all three branches of U.S. government (2011 survey by The Annenberg Public Policy Center), CONSTITUTION USA sets out to illuminate, with style and humor, this remarkably misunderstood document. CONSTITUTION USA uses an innovative visual approach, combining top-line animation and graphics with archival footage from television and movies to bring to life both the history and the actual text of the Constitution. 4

“If you really stop and think about it, the Constitution is all around us all the time” says Sagal. “And though many of us don’t really understand the document, that has never stopped us from arguing about what it means.” “Tackling a topic as important as the Constitution, and doing it in a way that is not only educational, but entertaining as well, is the essence of what PBS stands for,” says Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “And timing the series to coincide with the anniversary of an important milestone in U.S. history is another way we demonstrate value as America’s largest classroom. At any moment, anyone can tune in to a local PBS station and find relevant content that in some way relates to what’s going on in the world.” “Public broadcasting stations and producers owe their existence, in large part, to the guarantee of freedom of expression contained in the First Amendment to the Constitution,” said Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). “Through public broadcasting, Americans are informed, educated and entertained; our democracy and civil society strengthened. We are proud to support CONSTITUTION USA, which offers a unique and contemporary perspective on how the Constitution, an important part of our shared history, continues to guide us in addressing the issues and challenges we face today.”

state capitol that Thomas Jefferson designed to resemble a Roman temple, the home of Henry Ford’s first assembly line, the first indoor regional shopping mall, an airport with a swooping concrete roof that seems to float on air — these are among the buildings surveyed in this cross-country journey to 10 influential works of American architecture. Meet the daring architects who imagined them and learn the shocking, funny and even sad stories of how they came to be. They changed the way we live, work, worship, learn, shop and play. EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN - MADAME CHIANG KAI-SHEK

I

n a remarkable life that touched three centuries, Madame Chiang Kai-Shek rose to become one of the most powerful women in the world. She positioned herself at the forefront of Chinese politics and held extraordinary influence in world affairs for a woman of her time. She was, for 5 decades, a source of invaluable support for her China’s ineffective Nationalist leader, her husband, General Chiang Kai-Shek.

he most shameful and best-kept secret in the U.S. military is the epidemic of rape and sexual assault within the ranks. An American female soldier in a combat zone is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. A culture of privilege and impunity has resulted in few prosecutions and the systematic isolation of women who dare to report the crimes.

Meet Joe Sankey

T his year marks Joe Sankey’s 26th year as the set designer of MPTV. Since 1987, Joe has been creating the sets for MPTV’s local productions including INTERCHANGE, BLACK NOUVEAU, the GREAT TV AUCTION and the nationally-broadcast CIRCUS PARADE.

CHRIS MANN Sunday, June 2, 2013 Pabst Theater

Joe earned his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University and his Master’s Degree at Boston University. He moved to Milwaukee in 1982 to join the Milwaukee Repertory Theater as an assistant set designer and after three seasons with The Rep, he did freelance work with theaters such at the Milwaukee Chamber Theater and the Melody Top Theatre. Joe is a department of one, and as such, he has two rules he follows. “Don't design what you can't build and don't build what you can't lift," said Joe. He designs the sets, and serves as carpenter, painter and property master. He also works on many non-broadcast projects, such as setting up the Great TV Auction Art Preview at the Home & Garden Show. One of his favorite projects was THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE, because not only did he work on set design, he also designed the costumes featured in the program.

THE PIANO GUYS Friday, October 11, 2013 Pabst Theater

To reserve your seats, call 414-297-8020 or visit mptv.org with your donation to support programs on MPTV.

“Every day is different and that’s why I love it.” Said Joe, “And since I’m the only person in the design department, I have drawn on everything I learned in college, and also picked up some new skills along the way.” Joe is an admitted hoarder, since the design budget in public television is small. He has become masterful at salvaging and re-using, and breaks down old sets to save the wood he can use in another set. “This job is what I make of it,” Joe said. “No one can make this job interesting but me, and part of what makes it interesting is getting every dollar to count as three.” In his free time, Joe likes to travel and immerse himself in other cultures. He also enjoys attending the theater and opera, and tending to his perennial garden. 23

he film recounts a fascinating, yet seldom-told, chapter in World War II history. The documentary chronicles a reallife Casablanca, in which a high-profile group of poker buddies — including Colonel Dwight Eisenhower — hatched an intricate international plan of rescue and resettlement, saving 1,300 Jews from certain death in Nazi concentration camps. RESCUE IN THE PHILIPPINES tells this gripping story through interviews and firstperson accounts from refugees who detail their harrowing escape from Europe and immigration to the Philippines.

They broke a code ten times tougher than Enigma and, with a handful of brilliant men, allowed Churchill to 'hack in' to Hitler's own hotline, win the War and usher in the age of computers.

ar, deception and art come together in this astonishing true story of American G.I.s who tricked the enemy with rubber tanks, sound effects and carefully crafted illusions during WWII. This remarkable tale of a top-secret mission that was at once absurd, deadly and amazingly effective is told through the stories of the veterans, many of whom — like Bill Blass and Ellsworth Kelly — would go on to have illustrious careers in art, design and fashion.

SHELTER ME: LET’S GO HOME

PBS NewsHour

BBC World News

HELTER ME features stories about shelter pets that went from rescued to rescuer. The first story is about our hero firefighters who use shelter dogs for searchand-rescue. These teams have been to the World Trade Center and helped look for survivors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Rita, Superstorm Sandy and the Joplin tornadoes. When a disaster strikes and people are buried, these search dogs will be the first on the scene to save you. We also show a dramatic rescue of homeless puppies, an innovative spay/neuter clinic and a family adopting a beautiful cat at an animal shelter. 5/29, 9p.m. 36HD

n 1960's Britain, an upstanding detective takes on a dangerous world. Award-winning actor Martin Shaw (Judge John Deed, The Professionals) stars as Commander George Gently - an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London's Scotland Yard to England's North Country in the mid-1960's. Gently's reputation for honesty and relentlessness makes him almost as feared among his colleagues as he is among criminals. Series runs Thursdays on
