T

his month we would like to recognize the We Energies Foundation as one of the

production underwriting sponsors of Around the Corner with John McGivern, season 6, on Milwaukee PBS. We Energies has been a proud sponsor of this entertaining series since season 4. Around the Corner with John McGivern will return for another season next year, and We Energies Foundation again will sponsor the program. 2018 will feature 13 Wisconsin communities, including Thiensville/Mequon, Appleton, Middleton, Viroqua, Mayville, New Berlin/Hales Corners, Stevens Point, Caledonia/Wind Point, Havenwoods, Manitowoc, Platteville, Eau Claire, and sites in Milwaukee. Around the Corner with John McGivern, currently airs on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Channel 10.1, Fridays at 5 a.m. and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 36.1. The We Energies Foundation, formerly the Wisconsin Energy Foundation, was established in 1982 to help improve the quality of life in communities across their service area. Since its inception over 30 years ago, the We Energies Foundation has invested more than $149 million in support of initiatives that promote education, economic health, arts and culture, and the environment. In 2016 alone, the foundation provided grants to nearly 800 organizations contributing to the health and well-being of communities across the region. Through its grants and contributions, the We Energies Foundation has created brighter futures for the towns and cities throughout Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Funding for initiatives supported by the We Energies Foundation is derived from the stockholder portion of earnings and dividends paid by Wisconsin Energy Corporation. Grants do not affect the profitability of Wisconsin Energy Corporation nor are they reflected in the prices customers pay for services from We Energies. “We’re pleased to support Milwaukee PBS and Around the Corner with John McGivern. The program showcases all that makes Wisconsin a great place to live and work,” said Beth Straka, senior vice president – corporate communications and investor relations of WEC Energy Group and vice president –We Energies Foundation. Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the underwriting support and commitment of the We Energies Foundation. We greatly appreciate their sponsorship of Around the Corner with John McGivern and their commitment to Milwaukee PBS. M

ilwaukee PBS’ Great TV Auction kicks off its 49th year on April 28 and runs through May 6th. For nearly 5 decades, this most unique and exciting televised event has raised millions of dollars for public broadcasting in our area. The shows you’ve come to rely on from Milwaukee PBS – Antiques Roadshow, This Old House, NOVA, Curious George, The Arts Page and Around the Corner with John McGivern are purchased in part with the funds the Auction generates from the community. This year, you’ll find all 9 days of the Great TV Auction on Channel 36 (Channel 16 for Spectrum subscribers). The experience you’ll have watching, bidding and winning items on the Great TV Auction is the result of more than 1,000 volunteers assisting station staff in acquiring the collectibles, antiques, one of a kind art, sports memorabilia, and yes, those Elegant Farmer pies! With all the activity we’ve personally seen going on behind the scenes, we’re definitely betting on “36 to Win” this month. Back by popular demand this year, we’ll have one full night of just art on the Great TV Auction, Sunday April 30th. From our featured artists for 2017 to the donations from collectors all over, you’ll be intrigued at the variety and hidden treasures that might be your newest acquisition, or a gift for a loved one. Be sure to tune in on Thursday, May 4th as John McGivern takes to the podium to host the Great TV Auction, adding to the fun and community spirit of the event. We can’t think of a better combination

May is a time to remember. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French. We celebrate Mothers and their critical role in the family. Finally, we remember those who gave their lives during their military service. This month Milwaukee PBS has a host of programs that remember and celebrate. Milwaukee PBS Great TV Auction if it’s May, it’s Auction time. Don’t miss all the great deals now on Milwaukee PBS 36. 10thirtysix producer Dan Jones introduces two talented artists who happen to be husband and wife. Find out how saying “I do” lead to a special work of art in a Milwaukee church. And have you ever thought of leaving city life for the beautiful rolling hills of rural Wisconsin to grow and raise your own food source? Well, Dan Small of Outdoor Wisconsin and his wife did. It’s hard work, but they love being homesteaders. Outdoor Wisconsin talks with DNR naturalist Randy Hetzel who compares common and alligator snapping turtles. Deb Wolniak looks at accessible fishing piers on Lake Winnebago. Jeff Kelm and University of Wisconsin Professor Emeritus Stan Temple look at the fall Sandhill Crane migration on the Wisconsin River, and host Dan Small talks with Patricia Foreman about raising backyard chickens. Black Nouveau features encore presentations of special editions including Tribute to the Negro Baseball Leagues, the Martin Luther King Memorial Concert and Trippin’. ¡Adelante! showcases an exhibit of Chilean artist Ximena Sosa and the inauguration of a life-size statue of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. Also Ana Hooker, from Exact Sciences, talks about Cologuard, a colon cancer detection tool. The Arts Page revisits some of our favorite art experiences including community murals the Delavan Walldogs and SHARP Literacy created, art installations including Shorewood’s “Ghost Train” and the “MotoPhotoShow”, performances of “McGuire” and “Liberace!” from the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, as well as photographers Tom Ferderbar, JoAnn O’Hare and James Meyer. Around the Corner with John McGivern features season three’s episodes beginning this month. The crew visits Hartford, Geneva Lake, Sheboygan Falls and Kohler, and Milwaukee’s Westown. Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu features two delicious breakfast items from South India, a very popular cream of wheat Uppuma, and a uniquely South Indian multigrain pancake called, Adai. Tracks Ahead takes a look at the gigantic layout called Northlandz. This layout is billed as the largest model railroad in the world. Also, ride with author and Chicago Sun Times literary critic Henry Kisor as he travels to the Rocky Mountains. Visit milwaukeepbs.org for program details and show times.

Meet Our 2017 Featured Artists Pamela Ruschman, of Mequon, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the 2017 Great TV Auction’s Wisconsin Collection. Deeply inspired by a childhood on her family’s farm and the color and nature of America's dairyland, Ruschman began painting what she saw in her surroundings. “Buttercup” is a tribute to the hardworking farmers of the great Badger State. A beautiful summer sunset in the background crowns this sweet Holstein's face. The original oil and 100 prints, including 10 remarques, will be offered for bidding. Printing is donated by Brookstone Printing. To view more of Ruschman's farm animals and landscapes, go to pamelaruschman.com.

Andrew Goralski, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Sports Collection. Goralski's trademark ability to paint lifelike portraits has brought him to national prominence in recent years, and his originals hang in the homes of many top athletes around the country. In "Gridiron Gold", the artist brings Aaron Ridgers, Clay Matthews, and Jordy Nelson, three of the powerhouses of the Green Bay Packers, into brilliant focus using pastels. The original piece, 100 prints, including 10 remarques, and ten stretched canvases will be offered for bidding. Printing is donated by Burton and Mayer. To view more of Goralski's work, go to andrewgoralski.com.

Hal Koenig, of the Bay View neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Century Collection. A former architect, Koenig has a mastery of the lines that create the cityscapes of Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, Minneapolis, and many other urban landscapes. He has created "Prospect" as an homage to Milwaukee's East Side and the hustle and bustle of activity on Prospect and North Avenue. His use of saturated color and impressionistic strokes make this "usual" scene unusual and breathtaking. The original and 100 prints, including 10 remarques, will be offered for bidding. Printing is donated by HM Graphics. To view more of Koenig's work, go to halkoenig.com.

Jarob Ortiz, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s newest group, the MATC "Stormer" Collection. The category features an artist who is a Milwaukee Area Technical College graduate and was selected by a group of MATC staff and alumni from Milwaukee PBS, a viewer-supported service of MATC. "Grant Park at Dawn" is a work of heart from home, however. This image is both beautiful and a reminder of times past. Ortiz and his grandfather would fish together near this stretch of rocky beach in South Milwaukee. Printed for Milwaukee PBS by the staff and students of the MATC Print Shop, 200 of these posters will be offered for bidding in addition to the framed original photograph. To see more of Ortiz's work, visit jarobortiz.com.

Jesse Meyer, raised in Waupun, WI, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction's Studio Collection. After having founded Flux Design with a fellow Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design student, Meyer broke out on his own to pursue a creative journey as an independent fine artist and sculptor. The 2017 Studio Collection includes eight pairs and one quartet of his signature Garden Fish. Each pair consists of a 12 inch and a 16 inch long abstract fish in either bronze or stainless steel. Meyer employs cold-forging, hammer, and anvil to make these graceful forms. Then he individualizes each fish with grinding, polishing, and chemical treatments to give them their distinctive patina. More of Meyer's work can be seen at jessemeyerscupturestudio.com.
