Letter from
Bohdan Zachary One of May’s standout programs resonates with me for very personal reasons. The year I graduated from high school, my best friend took his own life. Even though the event rattled our community, we didn’t talk about it nor did we understand it. Suicide was at that time a topic that had never been discussed in school nor in our home nor in our tight-knit community. The death of my best friend has always remained with me. Many years later, when I’d moved to Milwaukee and joined Milwaukee PBS, I discovered the powerful stories Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Rory Linnane was writing about teens and mental health issues in the state of Wisconsin. Rory’s captured the pain of youth who have contemplated suicide, who have been bullied, who have been sexually abused. You can only imagine how excited I became when Rory approached the producers of Milwaukee PBS’ 10THIRTYSIX™ with the idea of using television to present the stories of four teens from the newspaper series. In the months since the production team that includes Maryann Lazarski, Scottie Meyers, Darin Malkowski, Justin Migliano and Brian Ewig began putting together the stories for this upcoming documentary, I’ve seen segments from the upcoming documentary that jolt me no matter how many times I’ve seen them. A live, half-hour segment will immediately follow the documentary, including an interactive discussion with medical professionals, parents and insights from Rory herself. Please join us Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. for a very special night featuring KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE hosted by Portia Young. I promise you an experience that will remind
2
us all that the words we say and the actions we take can and must make a difference in the lives of those around us. Also that evening, just before KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE, we’ll premiere another new special, hosted by fan favorite John McGivern. John and his longtime producer, Lois Maurer, have teamed up for five half-hour specials focused on topics of interest to middle-aged viewers. NEXT AVENUE CONVERSATIONS, which are made possible through a generous grant from Bader Philanthropies, will premiere May 16 at 7:00 p.m. New episodes will premiere over the next four months. I’m enormously proud of the producers of each of our news shows. They have succeeded in telling the stories of the communities Milwaukee PBS serves. I invite you to watch and let us know what you think.
Thank you. Sincerely,
Bohdan Zachary, General Manager

M
ilwaukee PBS will premiere a groundbreaking documentary next month about four, diverse young people from southeastern Wisconsin who open up about their struggles with mental health and thoughts of suicide in order to spotlight the gravity of the problem and help identify solutions. Wisconsin sadly ranks among the worst states for rates of youth depression, youth suicide and shortages of care providers. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics also show that Wisconsin’s youth suicide rate is consistently higher than the national rate. With such disheartening numbers, Milwaukee PBS is proud to partner with reporters from USA Today Network-Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, to produce YOU’RE NOT ALONE, a half-hour documentary that flips the script on traditional conversations about mental illness and suicide. The documentary is an extension of USA TODAY NETWORKWisconsin’s long-running series “Kids in Crisis.” The series has been recognized by the Poynter Institute and others for its engaging approach, which includes 10 town hall meetings across the state, a day of action in Madison and participating in Mental Health Awareness Day among other events. Until now, the critically acclaimed series has not had a television presence. The documentary is being developed by Milwaukee PBS’ award-winning, news-magazine program 10THIRTYSIX™, which has won regional Emmy Awards and has been recognized numerous times by statewide press associations, including receiving the “Best News Program” award in 2016 by the Milwaukee Press Club. Production on YOU’RE NOT ALONE began in December, and since that time, producers and editors have spent hundreds of hours putting the documentary together, capturing life-changing moments along the way. The four subjects of the documentary have had tough lives. One was born addicted to heroin and unfairly bounced around the foster care and youth prison systems. One was homeless as a toddler and wrote a goodbye note when he was just 7 years old. One was cyberbullied to the point where her mom had to literally lie on top of her in bed so that she wouldn’t hurt herself. And another has had to navigate a society that at best is uneducated about the transgender experience.
But they are now thriving and eager to show that they are so much more than their mental health struggles. They say they’re sharing their stories to help end the stigma around mental illness and to encourage other young people to seek help. They say they want other young people to know that they’re not alone in whatever they may be going through. 10THIRTYSIX™ Executive Producer Maryann Lazarski said she was amazed by the courage and resiliency each of the young people exhibited. “As a parent, all of this is very scary,” Lazarski said. “But the four young people in our documentary have really helped me understand the different challenges and how to best approach someone so that I’m not just a bystander.” Lazarski added, “I really do hope kids realize that there is help, that there are people to talk to. Parents, pay attention to your kids. And kids, don't be afraid to talk to your parents.” The 30-minute documentary premieres on May 16 at 7:30 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS. A live, half-hour segment will immediately follow the documentary, including an interactive discussion with medical professionals and parents, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Rory Linnane, who has been the lead reporter on the “Kids in Crisis” newspaper series. It will also dive deeper into some of the issues raised in the documentary, including the severe shortage of mental health experts servicing people in rural areas of the state. Milwaukee PBS and USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin will host a free public screening of YOU’RE NOT ALONE on Monday, May 13 at Pius XI Catholic High School’s performing arts center, located at 135 N 76th St. Hear from producers and some of the subjects of the documentary during a talkback discussion after the film. Additionally, there are screenings planned across Wisconsin throughout the summer and into fall, including in Milwaukee, Appleton, Green Bay and Wausau. More details of those events will be available soon at MilwaukeePBS.org. Parents and guardians overwhelmed by the complexity of the issue will be relieved to learn that documentary producers are currently developing a digital toolkit that will be available for free online to equip adults with information about resources, tips on how to identify a problem and conversation starters among many other helpful items.

D-DAY: OVER NORMANDY
Courtesy of National Archives
D-DAY: OVER NORMANDY focuses on the personal stories of those who served in the Second World War, and was filmed exclusively by drone camera on location on some of the most iconic locations in Normandy, France, including: Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Pointe-du-Hoc, Omaha Beach and more. The modern-day aerial footage is accompanied by interviews with World War II veterans, mixed with archival footage of the June 6, 1944 “D-Day” invasion, along with newly created maps and photo animations. 5/29, 4p.m. 10HD

SUNDAY
In this one-hour special, Rick Steves travels back a century to learn how fascism rose and then fell in Europe — taking millions of people with it. He traces fascism’s history from its roots in the turbulent aftermath of World War I, when masses of angry people rose up, to the rise of charismatic leaders who manipulated that anger, and the totalitarian societies they built. The goal of RICK STEVES FASCISM IN EUROPE is to learn from the hard lessons of 20th-century Europe, and to recognize that ideology in the 21st century. 5/1, 5p.m. 10HD

FEATURED UNDERWRITER
P otawatomi Hotel & Casino is a generous local underwriter of programs on Milwaukee PBS. Currently they sponsor the PBS series AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, while earlier this year they also sponsored Season 8 of AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN and INDEPENDENT LENS’ “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World.” In 2018 they were a local underwriter of the PBS 4-part series, NATIVE AMERICA, on the 15,000 year culture of Native peoples. In addition to partnerships like this, each year Potawatomi and its guests raise in excess of $1 million for local children’s charities through its Heart of Canal Street campaign. Thirty-one organizations benefit from the program each year, which impacts positive changes on critical community issues. Since 1994, Heart of Canal Street has raised more than $19 million for hundreds of organizations. “Milwaukee PBS is a vital part of our community, and Potawatomi Hotel & Casino is proud to partner with an organization that gives so much to the people of southeast Wisconsin,” Potawatomi Hotel & Casino CEO and General Manager Rodney Ferguson said. “Public television has long been an important part of our community and we are thrilled to be able to play a role in helping keep the tradition of original local programming and community engagement going strong.” Milwaukee PBS is most appreciative of the underwriting commitment and support of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino.
