his month we would like to recognize The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, (I.B.E.W.) Local 494, a long-time supporter of MPTV’s locally produced series, Outdoor Wisconsin. Founded over 100 years ago in 1906, I.B.E.W. Local 494 is a labor union representing electrical workers in construction, manufacturing, maintenance, and telecommunications. Outdoor Wisconsin begins its 31st season this fall. Outdoor Wisconsin is a show for both outdoor and armchair enthusiasts to appreciate Wisconsin’ natural lakes, rivers, and woodlands –with features on Wisconsin’s natural beauty and resources. Host Dan Small and producer/director Maryann Lazarski have planned an exciting season, including such features as canoeing on the Mecan River in Marquette County, planting a deer food plot, a feature on the newest outdoor craze – footgolf, and amazing stories about people who have overcome their disabilities, thanks to the great outdoors. Outdoor Wisconsin will also head out on the water for some challenging charter fishing, go bow hunting for deer, and include lots of segments for families and children, including one that involves digging in the mud! Outdoor Wisconsin will feature the IBEW-Sporting Clays event at Wern Valley Sportsmen’s Club for broadcast on February 12th, 2015, at 9 p.m.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 494, with over 1,000 members and their families, as well as over 1,000 retirees, has played an integral part of our community. As highly trained electrical workers, they take great pride in ensuring that where you learn, work, play, and sleep is safe. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 494 is proud of its underwriting support of Outdoor Wisconsin. Each year they also sponsor the Outdoor Wisconsin Banquet. The 2015 banquet is scheduled for February 19th. According to John Bzdawka of I.B.E.W. s this month’s letter is being written, leaves are falling from trees just a little earlier than usual for the year, families are decorating their homes with autumnal themes and Thanksgiving meal plans are underway. Here at the station, we’ve been preparing a program schedule for November that ranges from an annual salute to the nation’s veterans to awarding accolades for one of the funniest people in America. Of course, you’ve seen the cover of this month’s issue. Jay Leno, comedian, late night personality, and HarleyDavidson fan (of course!), will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Leno’s contributions to the fabric of American comedy will be celebrated by a long list of guests including Garth Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, Carol Burnett and Kristen Chenoweth. Tune in on November 23rd…and get ready to laugh! Our nation’s veterans and active military are recognized in many programs this month including Craft in America: Service (November 2nd), A Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House (November 7th) and Navy Seals – Their Untold Story (November 11th), to name a few”

THE KENNEDY CENTER MARK TWAIN PRIZE AIRING NATIONALLY ON PBS CELEBRATED IN

ashington, D.C. — This October, The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize salutes Jay Leno. The program premieres Sunday, November 23rd at 7 p.m. on Channel 10. Taped at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on October 19th, the special features a star-studded cast of Leno’s friends and colleagues including top entertainers and comedians, Kevin Eubanks, Jimmy Fallon, Jamie Foxx, Chelsea Handler, Seth Meyers, Jerry Seinfeld, JB Smoove, Wanda Sykes and a special appearance by Betty White. The evening pays tribute to the humor and accomplishments of the comedy icon. Upon learning he will receive the Mark Twain Prize, Jay Leno remarked, “What an honor! I’m a big fan of Mark Twain’s. In fact, A Tale of Two Cities is one of my favorite books.” It was in May of 1992 when Leno followed in the footsteps of legendary NBC late-night hosts Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Johnny Carson as Tonight Show host. Prior to becoming host, Leno had been the exclusive guest host on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson since September 1987. He first appeared as a guest on the show March 2nd, 1977, and he made numerous additional appearances on the show, as well as NBC’s former program Late Night with David Letterman. An indefatigable performer, Leno loves to test his humor live on audiences across the nation, performing over 100 live appearances in nightclubs, theaters, and stadiums each year, including during Tonight Show hosting. Leno has also gained an international following on the internet with his new creation, Jaylenosgarage.com, winning an Emmy Award and two additional nominations for Outstanding Special Class–ShortFormat Nonfiction Programs. Leno, himself, is the recipient of the People’s Choice Award and other honors, including the Harris Poll selection as most popular star on television. Other personal highlights include the Hasty Pudding Award at Harvard University and an honorary doctorate from his alma 4

mater, Emerson College. Like Mr. Carson, Groucho Marx, and an elite group of entertainment figures, he has been invited to have his papers installed in the Library of Congress. Leno’s children’s book If Roast Beef Could Fly (from Simon & Schuster) was published in April 2004 and immediately became a New York Times Bestseller. His follow-up kids book How to be the Funniest Kid in Your Class was similarly successful. He has also published the book Leading with My Chin (from HarperCollins), as well as four versions of Headlines, the compilation of books and desk calendars featuring his favorite funny newspaper headlines, and Police Blotter, a book with more humorous newspaper clips involving police stories. When he is not performing, writing, or doing charitable work, Leno keeps busy doing voice-over work in such movies as Cars and Igor on the hit-TV show The Fairly Oddparents (Nickelodeon) where the character The Crimson Chin – a superhero with a chin with superpowers – was inspired by Leno’s own noted jawline. He is also a monthly columnist in Popular Mechanics and in his spare time, he enjoys working on his collection of classic cars and motorcycles, building

a number of cars, including an eco-car in his ecofriendly garage. Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, and raised in Andover, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Mavis, live in Los Angeles. Jay Leno is the 17th recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Past recipients of the prize have been Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009), Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012) and Carol Burnett (2013). The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was created in 1998 by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Mark Krantz, Peter Kaminsky, Bob Kaminsky and Cappy McGarr to recognize the art of humorists who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said, “Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.” Jay Leno will be presented a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain, sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). The bust and its images are courtesy of the Mark Twain House, Hartford, Connecticut. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is America’s living memorial to President Kennedy. It is the nation’s busiest performing arts facility and annually hosts more than 2,000 performances for audiences totaling nearly 2 million; Center-related touring productions, television, and radio broadcasts welcome 40 million more. Now in its 43rd season, the Center presents performances of music, dance, and theater; supports artists in the creation of new work; and serves the nation as a leader in arts education.

Black Nouveau honors veterans as they tell their stories of war and freedom. 4th Street Forum on the Road visits Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communications to discuss news and knowledge in the digital age. A special edition of The Arts Page explores a powerful new exhibit at the Jewish Museum in Milwaukee called “Stitching History from the Holocaust”. ¡Adelante! highlights Danceworks’ “Mad Hot Ballroom” and “Tap”. I Remember host Jim Peck interviews New York Times bestselling author and humorist Michael Perry. Perry is known for his personal memoirs written while living in rural Wisconsin. Outdoor Wisconsin’s Dan Small passes along some turkey hunting tips for your Thanksgiving celebration. Around the Corner with John McGivern features notable repeats with visits to Waukesha, Madison, Wisconsin Dells, and Sherman Park. MPTV Highlights Free Resources for Educators From Wisconsin Media Lab By Julie Hill Lehr

t began back in 1916 when Professor Earle M. Terry and a group of physics students at the University of Wisconsin had an idea to use technology to educate all of the citizens of Wisconsin. Since that time Wisconsin educators have had access to many different educational resources through what is now called Wisconsin Media Lab, a service of Wisconsin Educational Communications Board.

“Our stations have always served classroom teachers and their students with relevant and compelling educational content. But the shifting of all those resources to an online home, through our partnership in the Wisconsin Media Lab, allows us to better collate, update, and dramatically expand the number and scope of videos and related content, giving teachers maximum flexibility,” said MPTV General Manager Ellis Bromberg.

Early resources started with educational radio broadcasts in 1922. In 1954 those resources transitioned to television and teachers began to take advantage of quality educational programming provided directly to their schools as recently as 2013. Some will remember this as Wisconsin School of the Air. Today those cutting-edge resources are easily available online at WIMediaLab.org. Wisconsin Media Lab curates cost-free awardwinning multimedia educational content. Its classroom resources connect to Wisconsin’s academic standards, span all curricular areas, and are vetted by Wisconsin educators.

The Wisconsin Media Lab webpage also provides access to national PBS LearningMedia content consisting of thousands of classroom-ready, curriculum-targeted digital resources designed to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

Resources include a wide range of educational media for students in kindergarten through high school. Curricular areas include science, mathematics, English language arts, social studies and many others. There are also some very specific Wisconsin resources including Wisconsin Biographies and Climate Wisconsin. Wisconsin Media Lab doesn’t stop there. It also provides professional learning resources for teachers. Best of all, there is no cost to use these valuable resources.

On October 29th MPTV hosts an event providing more information about these resources for southeastern Wisconsin educators. Wisconsin Media Lab Content and Outreach Manager, Kristin Leglar, will provide a resource overview. Educators will also be treated to some special materials and some tasty treats.
