ith the arrival of November, daylight saving time ends and the days grow shorter. It’s a season of clear, brisk days before the winter blasts of snow and ice envelop Wisconsin’s landscape. November is also a time we gather together with family and loved ones to celebrate our nation’s first Thanksgiving and give thanks for all that is meaningful in our lives. This month we would like to recognize von Briesen & Roper, s.c., a Wisconsin-based law firm. They have been a long-time underwriter of the distinguished PBS public affairs series, Frontline. Since 1983, Frontline has earned accolades for its powerful, investigative documentaries with stories that examine the controversial and critical issues of our times. In anticipation of the presidential election, Frontline produced The Choice 2016, a 2-hour in-depth examination of candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump: where they came from, the forces that shaped them, and how they may ultimately lead. Other recent Frontline documentaries have included programs on the Zika virus, the ISIS threat, the war in Syria, and the realities of getting ahead in the new American economy. Frontline continues to earn rave reviews with prestigious awards, including 69 Emmys, a special Emmy Award for excellence in documentary filmmaking, 17 Peabody Awards, 31 duPont-Columbia University Awards, eight Banff Television Awards, and numerous others. The law firm of von Briesen & Roper, s.c. has a diverse and thriving regional, national, and international practice. Established in 1904, von Briesen & Roper s.c. is the sixth largest law firm in Wisconsin with over 130 lawyers in offices in Milwaukee, Madison, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, and Waukesha County. At von Briesen & Roper s.c., they have always said, “We do things differently.” They have transformed the traditional image of a law firm into a modern platform for legal innovation. von Briesen & Roper s.c. and its employees take pride in supporting and giving back to the community, with consistent dedication to Milwaukee’s arts, charities, and nonprofit organizations, and are regularly recognized as a great place to work. The generous underwriting support of von Briesen & Roper, s.c. ensures that Frontline’s outstanding documentary reporting continues to be shown on MPTV. We at MPTV are most appreciative of von Briesen & Roper, s.c.’s vision and commitment, enabling MPTV viewers to access awardwinning journalism at its finest. ilwaukee Public Television donors, viewers like you, are investors in one of the most impactful resources in our nation. When the PBS broadcast network debuted in 1970 (successor to National Educational Television), the dedication to providing educational, arts and current events coverage were at the core of the programming and mission of the service. And, that continues today. Not only is the programming reflective of this initial structure, but the audiences that experience it continue to validate why PBS is in existence. Year after year, PBS is ranked #1 in public trust, higher than our courts of law, newspaper publications, commercial cable TV and even the federal government. 77% of individuals polled state that funding for PBS is money well spent.
As a trusted window to the world, PBS is the consistent leader in addressing important issues that include supporting student learning in the classroom, informing people about political and social issues, promoting an understanding of science and technology, and providing access to arts, culture and performance. America’s largest classroom is PBS. No other broadcast network provides the programs and services experienced by children (and adults) that prepare viewers for success in school and life. Programs like Curious George and Peg + Cat incorporate science and math in its content. And, literacy and social/emotional
development themes are at the core of programs like Super Why!, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Arthur. Milwaukee Public Television is your PBS station bringing you these, and a host of local resources that reflect the topics and interests of importance in our very own communities. Feedback from you, our investors, guides us to the content produced that impacts all of us. On November 18th, we’ll debut our newest MPTV production: 10thirtysix, a half-hour series that will take an in depth look at the issues and movements in our very own backyard that deserve more than a brief soundbite. Hosted by television veteran Portia Young, and produced in conjunction with partners at 89.7 WUWM Milwaukee, Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service and Urban Milwaukee, 10thritysix promises to be an insightful and engaging series. Learn more about 10thirtysix on page 4 of “Fine Tuning.” From all of us at MPTV, thank you for your support and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

Hosts Southeastern Wisconsin News Magazine Program on MPTV Channel 10

ilwaukee Public Television is excited to introduce southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to its newest program, 10thirtysix. Titled after MPTV’s major channels, this monthly newsmagazine highlights an eclectic mix of interesting topics from throughout the viewing area.
“We are eager to bring this program to southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois,” said MPTV General Manager Bohdan Zachary. “We think viewers will appreciate that the 10thirtysix format will allow us to go into greater depth on important community stories we hope will inform, entertain, and inspire.” Each 30-minute episode will feature in-depth segments designed to give viewers greater knowledge about the place we call home.
Former WISN-TV anchor and reporter, Portia Young, will host the new program. Portia began telling stories as a young girl in her native Detroit and she will continue to tell stories in her new role. Young holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She has more than 14 years of experience as a reporter, anchor, and in public relations. She is Sargento Food Inc.’s Public Relations Manager and will continue in that role. 4
“Telling peoples’ stories is the very essence of public television,” said Portia Young. “Telling stories is why I earned a journalism degree. I’m honored to be part of the great storytelling legacy of public television, which brings to life history, the arts and important issues in communities across America and right here in Milwaukee through Milwaukee Public Television.” 10thirtysix will partner with other Milwaukee media organizations including the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, and Urban Milwaukee. WUWM Radio 89.7 will be 10thirtysix’s exclusive public media collaborator. 10thirtysix is storytelling at its best. These segments provide a depth, breadth and soul that just can’t be found in a traditional newscast.
Viewers who want to be in-the-know please tune in for 10thirtysix November 18th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. The next installment of 10thirtysix will be December 16th at 7:30 pm on Channel 10.

ovember is a time we give thanks for many things including the veterans who fought to keep America free and the many things we enjoy because of their sacrifice. This November also brings a time of decision-making. Voting is a right that many countries do not share. SOUNDBREAKING: PBS PRESENTS
STORIES FROM THE CUTTING EDGE OF RECORDED MUSIC Produced in association with the late Sir George Martin, the series features more than 150 artists, including Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt, RZA and many more sharing behind-the-scenes stories in New Eight-hour Television Series Debuts November 14-23, on Channel 10. SOUNDBREAKING: STORIES FROM THE CUTTING EDGE OF RECORDED MUSIC, an upcoming eight-episode PBS series that explores the extraordinary impact of recorded music on the modern world, will make its U.S. broadcast debut on PBS this fall. SOUNDBREAKING was the last project produced by legendary music producer Sir George Martin, who passed away on March 8. The series combines unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated artists, producers and innovators from across the music spectrum, with rare archival studio footage and an extensive soundtrack, to deliver one of the most wide-ranging series on the art of music recording. SOUNDBREAKING will air on weekdays, November 14th-23th, at 9 p.m. on Channel 10. The first two one-hour episodes premiered at South by Southwest® (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, last spring to great acclaim. Charting a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation in the creation of music, SOUNDBREAKING offers a behindthe-scenes look at the birth of new sounds. From the invention of the microphone to the Moog synthesizer, from the phonograph to digital streaming, SOUNDBREAKING moves between past and present to tell the stories behind the sounds and reveals how innovation redefined not only what we listen to and how we listen to it, but our very sense of what music is and can be. Viewers of all ages will hear the songs they love in a whole new way. “SOUNDBREAKING gives viewers a backstage pass with full access to some of the most ground-breaking moments in recorded music,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming at PBS. “It is a natural fit for our diverse, music-loving PBS audience. We look forward to sharing it with viewers in November, and we were excited to give the SXSW community a first glimpse.” The series features more than 150 exclusive and original interviews with such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Roger Waters, Roger Daltrey, Linda Perry, Barry Gibb, Elton John, Debbie Harry, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Lindsey Buckingham, Rosanne Cash, Don Was, Steven Van Zandt, Sheila E, Questlove, Ben Harper, Billy Idol, Beck, Imogen Heap, Darryl McDaniels, RZA, Bon Iver, Nile Rodgers, Nigel Godrich, Q-tip, Brian Eno, Mark Ronson, Rick Rubin, Tony Visconti and more.

“Music is the only common thread and universal language that binds us together regardless of race, nationality, age or income. And recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible,” Sir George Martin said of the project prior to his passing. The six-time GRAMMY® Award winner, recipient of the Recording Academy Trustees Award and producer of more than 50 number-one hit records added, “SOUNDBREAKING afforded me the opportunity to tell the story of the creative process of so many of the artists I have worked with throughout my life.” “It took a wonderful team of highly seasoned producers many years to create this special and utterly unique series that we know the PBS audience will love,” said Maro Chermayeff, partner at Show of Force. “With access to rare material from the vast music archives of major and independent record labels, as well as special archival sources and collections, including some never publicly seen behind-the-scenes footage, this series breaks new ground and is frankly just incredibly fun to watch.” “As a co-creator, Sir George Martin was the inspiration and intellectual force behind the SOUNDBREAKING project,” said Higher Ground founder David Langstaff. “He was involved with all phases of the project and was immensely proud of the way these great stories were being told. The fact that so many extraordinary singers, songwriters, producers and other artists came together to tell their stories is a testament to the respect and love they hold for Sir George, and the widespread recognition of his impact on the evolution of recorded music.” Organized thematically, each episode of SOUNDBREAKING tells stories of pop music icons using their determination, ingenuity and guts to create works of art that have touched us all. Stories within the episodes include: • George Martin and the Beatles’ groundbreaking work in the studio creates a new paradigm for pop music Phil Spector rises as the first “rock star producer” • Paul Epworth collaborates with Adele on “Rolling in the Deep” • Stevie Wonder embraces the synthesizer and makes a break with Motown
• Giorgio Moroder fuses R&B with electronica and the dance floor explodes • The art of sampling gives rise to hip-hop • Michael Jackson and Madonna take the art of the music video to new heights • Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye use the long-playing record for new kinds of expression To learn more about SOUNDBREAKING, visit www.soundbreaking.com; be a part of the conversation on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and Tumblr.
M
ilwaukee Public Television, WUWM Radio 89.7 and the War Memorial Center are partnering to celebrate southeastern Wisconsin’s veterans, with Mettle & Honor: The Greatest Generation. This inspiring documentary features interviews with World War II veterans that tell stories of sacrifice, struggle, and even moments of humor soldiers experience when a military unit is stationed together far from home. Journalist Mark Concannon discovered that these Wisconsin veterans were involved in some of the most iconic moments in World War II. Stories include veterans being POW’s in 1944, being part of the last bombing mission of World War II and watching General Douglas MacArthur come on shore in the famous “I shall return” scene. There are also stories of Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and many more. The documentary is part of the Veterans Story Project, an initiative from the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, intended to preserve an oral history of Wisconsin veterans from all wars and branches of service.
Mettle & Honor: The Greatest Generation premieres on November 7th at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. Visit mptv.org for encore presentations. WUWM 89.7 FM, in conjunction with MPTV’s veteransrelated programming, will also broadcast special programming that focuses on modern-day challenges local veterans face, including employment, sexual assault treatment, and IED trauma. Remember our veterans. Celebrate them and our freedom on Veteran’s Day, November 11. 11

HUGS AND KNISHES: A CELEBRATION OF OUR JEWISH FOOD AND TRADITIONS
M
outhwatering moments with a diverse range of Jewish families celebrate the importance of food as a cultural connection to the past, and a hope to maintain tradition in the future. Of course when there is talk of Jewish culture and tradition there is usually song, and actors Tovah Feldshuh and the late Fyvush Finkel prinkle their interviews with the Yiddish melodies of their childhoods. 11/27, 1p.m. 36HD
