Letter from
Bohdan Zachary We’re entering that time of year when family is at the front of everyone’s mind. Whether we’re gathering with friends and relatives to give thanks or just reminisce about the year that is drawing to an end, we share stories that make us laugh, cry and feel closer to one another. With that in mind, I’d like to take this opportunity to celebrate some accomplishments within the Milwaukee PBS family of storytellers with you, our extended family. I’m excited to share that BLACK NOUVEAU producer Everett Marshburn will be inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame this month. Everett truly deserves this outstanding recognition for his distinguished career in journalism. I’m also happy to share that in August, two BLACK NOUVEAU stories were awarded Salute to Excellence awards by the National Association of Black Journalists, the country’s largest organization for journalists of color.
A few other members of the family were also recently recognized. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN’s Dan Small was awarded the Excellence in Craft award from the Outdoor Writers Association of America, plus the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers awarded OUTDOOR WISCONSIN segment producer Jeff Kelm a first-place award for “Honeybees in Peril,” and Dan Small and co-producer Mark LaBarbera won Best in TV- Hunting for “Deer Hunt Wisconsin 2018.” Your support of Milwaukee PBS made these accomplishments possible. Your generosity allows powerful, award-winning stories about our community to be created and shared, near and far. I am grateful and thankful for your ongoing investment in public television that showcases southeastern Wisconsin. Sincerely,
General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

Elizabeth McGovern and Haley Lu Richardson star in acaptivating drama scripted by Julian Fellowes on MASTERPIECE Sunday, November 24, at 8p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10
The star, writer, and director of Downton Abbey the se-
ries and film reunite in The Chaperone, based on Laura Moriarty’s best-selling novel and featuring actress Elizabeth McGovern, screenwriter Julian Fellowes, and director Michael Engler. Portraying a Jazz-age quest for personal fulfillment by two markedly different women, the 90-minute program premieres on MASTERPIECE, Sunday, November 24, at 8pm on Milwaukee PBS after a successful theatrical run. The Chaperone is the inaugural production of MASTERPIECE FILMS, a movie-making spinoff of the multi-award-winning drama series, which is nearing its 50th anniversary.
McGovern (Downton Abbey, Ordinary People) stars as Norma Carlisle, the diffident chaperone to fellow Kansan, Louise Brooks, destined to become a 1920s sex symbol, played by co-star Haley Lu Richardson (Split). The cast also includes Victoria Hill (First Reformed), Géza Röhrig (Son of Saul), Campbell Scott (House of Cards), Blythe Danner (Will & Grace), Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings), and New York City Ballet principal dancer Robert Fairchild. Telling the fictionalized backstory of real-life silent-screen star Louise Brooks,The Chaperone begins in 1922, when Brooks is a teenage modern-dance sensation in her hometown, Wichita, Kansas. Winning a place at the renowned Denishawn Dance Company in New York City, run by Ruth St. Denis (Otto) and Ted Shawn (Fairchild), Louise requires a chaperone for her journey from staid Middle America to the Gatsby-like glory of the big city. Enter a family friend, Norma, who is the middle-aged mother of twin grown-up sons and the wife of an emotionally distant local attorney (Scott). She has her own reasons to sign on as Louise’s minder. In many ways, she is less worldly wise than her 15 year old ward.
8
Nonetheless, she does her best to enforce Presbyterian values on Louise—a job that grows increasingly difficult as their train makes its way east. Once in New York, Louise pursues dance by day and forbidden pleasures by night (whenever she can sneak away from Norma), while the chaperone embarks on a personal mission: discovering exactly who she is. Years before, Norma was raised by nuns in a New York orphanage, then placed on a notorious “orphan train,” where she eventually landed with a farm couple in Kansas. Tracking down the orphanage, Norma asks for the records of her adoption but is refused by the mother superior. She then enlists the friendly caretaker, a German immigrant named Joseph (Röhrig), to help her penetrate the mystery of her identity. The Chaperone is a story of self-discovery during a tumultuous period in American history. Louise will go on to become an icon of the Roaring Twenties and a rebellious model for her generation, pursuing her glittering career from New York to Hollywood to Berlin. But Norma, too, will embrace rebellion—and in Wichita, Kansas, no less!

Premieres Monday, November 11
A brand-new PBS KIDS series comes to Milwaukee PBS this month! XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM follows the adventures of Xavier Riddle, his sister Yadina and their friend Brad. In each episode, the three face a problem and must turn to the Secret Museum to help them solve it. The Secret Museum allows the three friends to travel back in time to meet real-life historical figures when they were kids. Based on a children’s book series by New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer, XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM will introduce kids to inspiring historical figures and the character virtues that helped them succeed. XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM premieres with a one-hour special on November 11. Following the premiere, 30-minute episodes will air every weekday on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.1 at 8:00 a.m. The show will also be available on the PBS KIDS VIDEO app and will air regularly on PBS KIDS 24/7 Channel 10.3 (check listings).

New Four-Part Documentary Series by Lynn Novick Follows Prisoners Through Rigorous College Program; Explores How Education Transforms Lives and Impacts Criminal Justice
A
lfred I. duPont-Columbia and Peabody-Award winning filmmaker Lynn Novick (THE VIETNAM WAR, PROHIBITION, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, THE WAR) has directed and produced a new documentary series, COLLEGE BEHIND BARS, that reveals the transformative power of higher education through the experiences of incarcerated men and women. The four-hour series directed and produced by Novick and produced by longtime collaborator Sarah Botstein (THE VIETNAM WAR, PROHIBITION, THE WAR, JAZZ), will air on Milwaukee PBS November 25-26 at 8p.m. on Channel 10. COLLEGE BEHIND BARS marks a new path for Novick, who is best known for history films directed with Ken Burns. The four-hour series, distilled from nearly 400 hours of cinéma-vérité footage, explores the lives of a dozen incarcerated men and women as they struggle to earn degrees in the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the country. The four-part film, broadcast over two consecutive nights in November, unfolds without narration through an intimate look at the lives, experiences and words of incarcerated men and women and their families. Working with renowned cinematographers Buddy Squires, ASC, and Nadia Hallgren, Novick and producer Botstein received unprecedented access to film for four years inside maximum and medium security prisons in New York State. The film, edited by Tricia Reidy, ACE, takes viewers on a stark and emotionally intense journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time – our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the millions of Americans living behind bars. Executive produced by Ken Burns, COLLEGE BEHIND BARS is Novick’s solo directorial debut. In this era of mass incarceration, America is the world’s largest jailer, with more than 2 million men and women behind bars; 630,000 are released annually, and nearly 50 percent end up back in prison within five years, trapped in a cycle of imprisonment, release and reincarceration. As one BPI student says on camera, “Prison is to punish. It’s not about creating productive beings. Individuals are not being prepared for anything other than what they’ve already been doing – crime.” “This film challenges conventional wisdom about education and incarceration, and raises questions we urgently need to address,” Novick said. “What ultimately is prison for? Who in America has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we break the cycle of recidivism? How can we have justice without redemption?” COLLEGE BEHIND BARS is not a story of non-violent drug offenders, false conviction or exoneration, unlike many recent documentary films about the criminal justice system. All of the BPI students featured in the film are serving time for serious, often violent
24
offenses. In wrenching, deeply personal interviews, they describe their childhoods and family backgrounds, reveal why they are incarcerated, express profound remorse, as well as hope for redemption and their worries about what life will bring after release from prison. “COLLEGE BEHIND BARS puts a human face on the millions of Americans whose lives are erased from public view when they enter prison,” producer Sarah Botstein said, “and raises questions about whether our criminal justice system is doing enough to prepare incarcerated men and women to re-enter society and become productive citizens, especially in a country that believes in second chances.” Executive producer Ken Burns added, “Lynn has provided us with a transformative story about the power of education and how it can change lives and also benefit society at large. Programs like the Bard Prison Initiative are sorely lacking in our criminal justice system. COLLEGE BEHIND BARS could not be coming out at a more perfect time.” “COLLEGE BEHIND BARS provides us with an intimate look at how learning can change lives and create hope,” said Perry Simon, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “The filmmakers have allowed us to witness these incarcerated men and women in the process of becoming, in their own words, ‘civic beings.’ We’re very excited to share this work with the American public through our local PBS member stations.” Once commonplace in American prisons, higher education declined precipitously after 1994, when Congress ended federal Pell Grants for inmates as part of the Clinton Crime Bill. For more than two decades, as “tough on crime” policies made America the world’s leading jailer, there was almost no federal or state funding for college in prison, despite its proven efficacy in preventing recidivism. In the nearly 20 years since BPI began, more than 500 alumni have been released, and fewer than four percent have gone back. The program currently enrolls 300 men and women in six prisons, and costs $6,000 per student per year, most of it privately funded. COLLEGE BEHIND BARS shows BPI students – most of whom did not finish high school – being held to the same high academic and intellectual standards as the undergraduates at Bard, a private liberal arts college in upstate New York. In classrooms, their cells, the library and the yard, they wrestle with difficult texts, analyze complex data and, over time, master a wide range of disciplines. Throughout the series, the filmmakers also follow the ups and downs of BPI’s Debate Union, which lost to a visiting team from West Point in the first year of filming, and six months later, beat a team from Harvard, creating a media sensation that went viral. For many of the students featured in the film, the culmination of their education is the year-long Senior Project. To complete the bachelor’s degree, they conduct original research and produce a final paper of 80 to 100 pages.
One of the driving creative forces behind BLACK NOUVEAU, Everett L. Marshburn will be inducted in the Milwaukee Press Club’s 2019 Media Hall of Fame in November. Marshburn is honored with this extraordinary distinction for his decades-long passion to provide a platform and a voice for Milwaukee’s African American community. Marshburn has been inducted along with seven other leaders in Milwaukee’s media industry. During his tenure at Milwaukee PBS, Marshburn has served as the producer of BLACK NOUVEAU and also produced several documentaries that highlight the issues, culture, history and challenges affecting African Americans in southeastern Wisconsin. These include FREEDOM WALKERS FOR MILWAUKEE, JOBS, THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE, STORIES FROM THE HOMEFRONT and "CROSSING THE BRIDGE": A BLACK NOUVEAU SPECIAL. Now in its 28th year, Black Nouveau is one of the nation’s longest-running local monthly series and airs every first Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS 10.1.

The 10THIRTYSIX documentary “A Hope for Tomorrow” airs Thursday, November 21, at 7:30pm on
Channel 10.1. Edumakono Zetho, featured previously on 10THIRTYSIX, is originally from the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. He came to Milwaukee through a refugee resettlement program after spending 15 years in a Tanzanian refugee camp. He has since formed a foundation aimed at helping women and children at the camp and earlier this year, he returned to the camp and documented daily life there. “A Hope for Tomorrow” is made possible in part through the underwriting commitments of Rotary International District 6270 and the International Institute of Wisconsin. Rotary International District 6270 consists of 2,700 members in select areas of Wisconsin. “Rotary Connects the World” is the mission of Rotary International and a primary project throughout the Rotary world is the global eradication of polio, with work being done in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “Rotarians in District 6270 appreciated the opportunity to underwrite a documentary featuring Congolese refugees,” shared District Governor Emeritus Kola Alayande, “because we live in a world where every time people unite and take action to create lasting positive changes, in our communities and in ourselves, the world is always better off.” The International Institute of Wisconsin, established in 1936, assists immigrants and refugees in transitioning into communities by offering programming and support services. Offerings include help with immigration and the path to citizenship, interpretation and translation services, and their international visitor leadership program. “All newcomers, immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees with their beliefs, values, customs and aspirations are welcomed by the International Institute,” said President and CEO Alexander Durtka. “To assist them in becoming active members of our community, we need to learn about them and them about us. This process needs partners to complete the learning and welcoming cycle.” Milwaukee PBS is deeply grateful for the support of Rotary International District 6270 and the International Institute of Wisconsin in presenting this powerful story to our community.
