Bohdan Zachary I
’m excited to share with you two celebratory events this month. First, the long-awaited live broadcast collaboration between Milwaukee PBS and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is finally here! After a year-long delay because of the pandemic, I’m thrilled you will experience this magical evening of music, showcasing the world-class musicians of the MSO, conducted by music director Ken-David Masur, set against the breathtaking beauty of the new Bradley Symphony Center. I’m proud Milwaukee PBS is able to offer this landmark event live and at no charge to viewers throughout our region. This month also launches BLACK NOUVEAU’s 30th season on Milwaukee PBS! This award-winning, locally produced program has truly helped shine a light on Milwaukee’s vibrant and growing Black community. In this issue of FINE TUNING, series producer Everett Marshburn shares some thoughts about the history, purpose and ongoing relevance of the show as we celebrate this anniversary season. Looking at national programming this month, you’ll definitely want to tune in for AMERICAN VETERAN. This four-part series traces the veteran experience across the arc of American history and explores the present-day divide between civilian and veteran communities. It’s a deeply moving story, illuminating the veteran experience and drawing civilian viewers into an unfamiliar culture.
CALL THE MIDWIFE It’s 1966, and it’s a testing time for the midwives. But there’s excitement, too, as the women’s rights movement intensifies. With Trixie’s help, Sister Julienne is determined to steer Nonnatus House out of its financial quandary. Dr Turner deals with an array of difficult cases including a former soldier involved in nuclear test explosions. Sister Monica Joan experiences a crisis of faith. Sister Frances realizes she needs to be a little less spiritual if she’s to really connect with the local women. Sundays, beginning Oct. 3 at 7PM on 10.1 Courtesy of Neil Street Productions

Happy Anniversary Black Nouveau! A look back with producer Everett Marshburn
T
his month, BLACK NOUVEAU begins its 30th season on Milwaukee PBS as “a program by, for and about the AfricanAmerican experience in southeastern Wisconsin, the nation and the world.” I became the lead producer for the series in 2006, but I had known about the show since 1990. Joseph Savage, one of the program’s creators, and I met at a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Los Angeles. We became friends and kept in touch. A decade later, when the convention was held in Milwaukee, I met the show’s other creators, Sharon Patterson and Liddie Collins. When Sharon Patterson left the station in 2006, I applied for the job and moved to Milwaukee from Baltimore, Maryland. BLACK NOUVEAU is the most recent in a number of efforts by Milwaukee PBS to connect with
Milwaukee’s growing AfricanAmerican community. The station, like many public television stations around the country, took the Kerner Commission’s suggestion seriously that the best way to begin to solve some of the racial inequities in our nation was to open media to the underserved, to hire people of color to report on their communities, and to give them the editorial freedom to do so. The need was great then and the need is still there—as important as ever! African-Americans are not a monolithic people; we are as diverse as our skin tones. BLACK NOUVEAU’s responsibility is to continue to give voice to all of us with honesty and clarity. We will examine issues that affect us, but most importantly, we will tell our stories and our history! That is a tradition I am proud to help continue!
The journalists, hosts and reporters who have been involved since the show’s creation reflect a virtual “Who’s Who” in communications and community service: Rod Walker, Walter Harvey, Sonya Masingale, Eric Von, Greg Stanford, Richard Lewis, Eugene Kane, Faithe Colas, Keith Murphy, Milton Dockery, Joanne Williams, Sheree Dallas, Margo Spann, Bobby Drake, LaShondra Scott, James Causey, Alexandria Mack and Earl Arms.
Thank you!
On the LOCAL SCENE A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION: THE MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY’S NEW HOME AND LIVE FROM BRADLEY SYMPHONY CENTER: MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA– Milwaukee PBS takes a behind-the-scenes look at the new Bradley Symphony Center in downtown Milwaukee, the MSO’S world-class musicians and its new neighborhood, then brings you a LIVE concert to celebrate this historic moment in our community. (See related article p. 26) 10THIRTYSIX™, ADELANTE AND BLACK NOUVEAU – This month, Milwaukee PBS’s public affairs programs premiere new seasons. As always, segments will include in-depth information about issues impacting the diverse communities of southeastern Wisconsin. And watch for Milwaukee PBS’s American Dreams segments, featured in all three shows. Follow these stories on the Milwaukee PBS website, social media and on-air. Check milwaukeepbs.org/schedule for details. LATINO WISCONSIN – This locally produced documentary vividly illustrates the impact, influence and importance of the state’s fastest growing population. An Evening of Musical Magic — LIVE from Downtown Milwaukee!
M
ilwaukee PBS and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) have partnered to bring a dazzling live performance from the Symphony’s opening weekend to everyone in our community. It all begins October 2 at 7 pm on Milwaukee PBS 10.1, when viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at the MSO’s new home, the Bradley Symphony Center, in the former Warner Grand Theater. A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION: THE MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY’S NEW HOME takes an in-depth look at how the theater was remodeled while maintaining the structural integrity of the historic landmark. Host Portia Young will introduce viewers to MSO conductor Ken-David Masur, profile some of the symphony’s world-class musicians and examine the venue’s neighborhood. At 7:30 pm, watch LIVE FROM BRADLEY SYMPHONY CENTER: MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, featuring guest pianist and MSO artistic partner, Aaron Diehl. Your generous support of Milwaukee PBS is making this historic broadcast possible –
The MSO is delighted the broadcast will allow more people to experience the Symphony. “Through Milwaukee PBS, thousands of people beyond the concert hall will be inspired by not only the orchestra’s performance, but by this historic theater,” shared MSO President and Executive Director Mark Niehaus. “The access to stellar education, performances, news and programming that is the mission of Milwaukee PBS makes them an excellent partner to the symphony as we aim to make our concert hall accessible to more people throughout southeastern Wisconsin.”
Thank you!
This broadcast continues a years-long history of collaboration between Milwaukee PBS and the MSO, and Milwaukee PBS is proud to be able to offer this landmark event live and at no charge to viewers throughout our region.
A New Kids Program and a New PBS KIDS Schedule!
M
ilwaukee PBS is excited to premiere a new children’s program! ALMA’S WAY launches October 4 at 7:30 am on Milwaukee PBS 10.1 and can also be seen on Milwaukee PBS KIDS 10.3 at 4 pm weekdays. This new show for ages 4 to 6 focuses on critical thinking and social-emotional learning. The program’s mission is to encourage children to use reflection and action to make responsible decisions for themselves and the world around them. The show’s main character is Alma Rivera, a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl living a fast-paced life in the Bronx alongside her family, friends and neighbors. The audience comes along with Alma as she learns to think for herself, make decisions and understand other people’s points of view—while making lots of messy and hilarious mistakes along the way. Alma lives with her parents, younger brother, grandfather and her mischievous little dog, Chacho. Learn more about ALMA’S WAY at pbskids.org/almasway. ALMA’S WAY creator Sonia Manzano, better known as Maria on SESAME
STREET, was born in the South Bronx and is a first-generation American of Puerto Rican descent. Manzano hopes the program will encourage children to think for themselves, adding, “I want kids to know they have a mind and they can use it.”
In addition to the broadcast program, kids can learn more about ALMA’S WAY, play games and find activities in both English and Spanish at pbskids.org/almasway. In order to add this inspiring new program to the weekday children’s line up, beginning October 4 you’ll see a change in the PBS KIDS schedule on Channel 10.1. PEG + CAT and THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! will not be part of the weekday schedule, but will continue to be broadcast on Milwaukee PBS KIDS 10.3, and XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM will move to 6 am. Visit milwaukeepbs.org/ schedule for complete details.
