Letter from

Bohdan Zachary & Kim Sosa Sixty years ago, the Milwaukee Vocational School (now known as Milwaukee Area Technical College) was granted a FCC broadcasting license to launch a television station. The Milwaukee Vocational School christened its first channel WMVS and several years later it launched a second channel, WMVT. Initially, the college deployed its resources to teach Milwaukee residents broadcast television production and engineering and two way radio engineering at its downtown campus television studios. During its infancy, educational telecourses were a staple of the WMVS schedule. But eventually, the need for more programming resulted in the production of new programs that reflected high standards of the college, and local programs began to focus on stories about southeastern Wisconsin. In no time, WMVS and WMVT became a production powerhouse and became known nationally for high quality shows that engaged, entertained and informed its viewers. That tradition continues to this day. Milwaukee PBS (the overarching brand name of Channels 10 and 36) produces six local productions that continue the station’s storied history of reflecting the needs and issues of the communities it serves. That’s more original locally produced production than just about any other PBS station in the country. Milwaukee PBS’ hallways are lined with decades worth of awards and letters of recognition that celebrate and remind us of the impact our programs have had on you, our loyal members. For many years, Channel 10’s popular Thursday night lineup has been home to Around the Corner with John McGivern and Outdoor Wisconsin. Beginning October 5th, we will present Milwaukee PBS’ other outstanding and national award-winning local series as well: iAdelante!, Black Nouveau, 10thirtysix™ and The Arts Page on that same night. It’s part of what we call Milwaukee PBS Presents. Our revamped Thursday night lineup is where you

can learn even more about the issues, people and communities that make southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois one of the most vibrant regions in our country. Look through this month’s Fine Tuning Magazine for more information about when you’ll see these programs on Thursday evenings. And, take a look at some of the further enhancements we’ve made to the publication after taking in constructive feedback we’ve received about the new format that debuted last month. Our magazine team took care to make sure that the listings are easier navigate to find your favorite, and soon to be favorite, programs throughout the month. Thank you for your feedback, for tuning in to the new Milwaukee PBS Presents line up of local programs on Thursday nights, and for your valuable support of WMVS and WMVT: Milwaukee PBS. Sincerely,

T his month we would like to recognize von Briesen & Roper, s.c., a Wisconsin-based law firm. They have been a long-time underwriter of the distinguished PBS public affairs series,

The law firm of von Briesen & Roper, s.c. has a diverse and thriving regional, national, and international practice. Established in 1904, von Briesen has over 150 lawyers in offices in Milwaukee, Madison, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, and Waukesha County. CURSES ON YOU, ROSS POLDARK!

POLDARK, SEASON 3

Premieres Sunday, October 1 on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10

Aidan Turner & Eleanor Tomlinson are back in an all-new season of Poldark on MASTERPIECE

Does George Warleggan finally have the upper hand against his archenemy, Ross Poldark? Can George’s growing power in Cornwall cement his control over the fate of his populist foe? Dream on! MASTERPIECE presents the latest thrilling exploits of Ross Poldark and his fiery partner, Demelza, starring Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the intrepid eighteenth century duo, on Poldark, Season 3, airing in eight action-packed episodes, Sundays, October 1 – November 19, at 8p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.

The new season costars Jack Farthing as the dastardly George and Heida Reed as his bewitching wife, Elizabeth, now estranged from her first love, Ross—or is she? Also returning are Caroline Blakiston as Ross’s crusty Aunt Agatha, whose passion in life is tormenting George; Beatie Edney as the irascible servant Prudie; Luke Norris as stalwart Dr. Dwight Enys; and Gabriella Wilde as Dwight’s secret fiancée, the fetching heiress Caroline Penvenen. Last season, TV Guide was captivated by Poldark’s “myriad pleasures, not the least of which is Aidan Turner’s swarthy charisma as the chivalrous and perilously proud crusader of Cornwall. … Poldark is the sort of great escape you would be foolish to resist.” Critics have been equally enthralled with Season 3, which recently aired in the UK. The Independent (London) lauded the “action-filled opener,” with its panoply of plot developments that “helped the atmospheric drama gallop out of the starting blocks.” And gallop it does. Episode One introduces fresh doubts about the paternity of Elizabeth’s impending baby, along with some consequential new characters, including Ellise Chappell as Elizabeth’s pretty cousin Morwenna. Hired as the governess for Elizabeth’s young son (by her previous marriage to Poldark’s cousin Francis), Morwenna is soon a pawn in George’s grand game to win political influence. Morwenna would prefer to share company with Demelza’s strapping brother Drake, a lay minister played by Harry Richardson (Dunkirk), but George intends her to marry the recently widowed Reverend Whitworth, portrayed with unctuous piety by Christian Brassington (Elizabeth: The Golden Age). Whitworth gives every indication of being a rank libertine, to the horror of the upright and innocent Morwenna. Meanwhile, George manages to abuse every privilege he accrues in his ruthless climb to power. Also enlivening the new season are a mysterious plague of frogs, a thwarted famine, and Aunt Agatha’s eagerly anticipated one-hundredth birthday party, which has a catastrophic catch. But the most stirring action involves the French Revolution, which manages to ensnare one of the program’s main characters in its Reign of Terror, prompting Poldark’s most dangerous mission yet. Perhaps even more perilous—at least for his psyche—is Ross’s cooling attitude toward Demelza. Reckless to a fault, he appears to be throwing it all away—a magistracy, a seat in Parliament, his lands, and even his red-haired beauty. What on earth could he be thinking?

IRELAND’S GREAT HUNGER AND THE IRISH DIASPORA

Ireland’s Great Hunger and the Irish Diaspora explores not just the potato failure that caused mass starvation, death, and emigration in Ireland from 1845 to 1852, but the historic and socio-political circumstances that made the Great Famine almost inevitable. The Emmy Award-winning documentary, narrated by actor Gabriel Byrne, includes insights from famine scholars and descendants of famine survivors as well as the stories of emigrants to Quebec and the “Earl Grey” orphan women who immigrated to Australia.

AMERICAN MASTERS:

EDGAR ALLAN POE: BURIED ALIVE OCTOBER 30 ON PBS FOR HALLOWEEN AT 8P.M. ON MILWAUKEE PBS CHANNEL 10 After his death, writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) became a global icon of modern literature and a pop culture brand. Best known for his Gothic horror tales and narrative poem “The Raven,” Poe’s stories are the basis of countless films and TV episodes, and have inspired even more, as has his name and image. At least four American cities claim this literary legend as their own – Baltimore, Richmond, Philadelphia and New York: an NFL football team is named after one of his poems, and his image appears on everything from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover to lunchboxes, bobbleheads and socks. Creating the detective fiction genre with “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841), Poe wrote over 100 short stories and poems altogether, beginning with Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), his first published work. Starring Tony Award-winning and Emmy-nominated actor Denis O’Hare and narrated by Oscarand Tony-nominated, two-time Golden Globe-winner Kathleen Turner, American Masters – Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive explores the misrepresentations of Poe as a drug-addled madman akin to the narrators of his horror stories. This caricature is thanks, in large part, to a high-profile obituary filled with falsehoods, written by his literary rival Rufus W. Griswold. Determined to re-invent American literature, Poe was an influential – and brutally honest – literary critic and magazine editor, who also invented the detective protagonist with his character C. Auguste Dupin, refined the science fiction genre and popularized short stories, actually writing more comedies than horror. An orphan in search of family, love and literary fame, Poe struggled with alcoholism and was also a product of early 19th century American urban life: depressed from the era’s culture of death due to the high mortality rate and the struggles of living in poverty. Poe famously died under mysterious circumstances and his cause of death remains unknown. “The mystery around Poe’s death is the least of it,” said filmmaker Eric Stange. “The real question at the heart of this film is why Edgar Allan Poe continues to be one of the most popular writers in the history of Western literature – and one of the most misunderstood.”
