his month we would like to recognize the Edward U. Demmer Foundation for its long-time underwriting support of Sesame Street. According to Robert Hanley, one of the co-trustees, the Demmer Foundation was created by Edward U. Demmer in memory of his parents, Lawrence E. and Emma Uhrig Demmer, and received its substantial funding upon Mr. Demmer’s death in 1969. As one of the primary areas of focus for the foundation was to benefit children in the state of Wisconsin, the Trustees were intent on supporting organizations that had the potential for reaching a wide audience with effective programming. In 1970, as Sesame Street was making its debut on public television, the Trustees thought it presented a perfect opportunity for achieving one of its goals. Underwriting broadcasts of Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood became a regular undertaking for the foundation over the years and has been well received by the Greater Milwaukee community and beyond. After 44 years of support with grants approaching $1,250,000, the trustees are still committed to the cause, providing wholesome creative viewing opportunities to youth in Wisconsin. Co-trustee Wayne Lueders stated that “the Edward U. Demmer Foundation has been very proud to provide this support for what the trustees consider to be a very effective program to educate and benefit children. This programming provided by MPTV helps fulfill the wishes of the Demmer family to support very worthwhile programs helping children. We would not provide such long-term support unless we believed in what MPTV is doing and its importance to our community and its children.”

This year MPTV proudly celebrates the 45th season of Sesame Street. The new season will focus on helping children learn self-regulation skills, such as impulse control, learning to follow directions, and selfmonitoring their emotions – all in fun and engaging ways that kids love. These skills are fundamental for children to learn – in school and in life. Along with learning letters, how to count, and other cognitive skills, kindergarten teachers view self-regulation skills as essential for school success. MPTV is grateful and deeply appreciative of the Edward U. Demmer Foundation’s long-time commitment to children’s literacy programming in southeastern Wisconsin. Their generous support has enabled MPTV to continue to offer Sesame Street to children and families for over fortyfour years. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

O

ctober is a very busy month on the MPTV calendar, and we have programs and events, both on- and off-air, that you should enjoy! Sunday nights on Channel 10, beginning October 5th, MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! rolls out new episodes of INSPECTOR LEWIS, with Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox returning for a seventh season; then premiering on October 26, it’s DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY, an adaptation of P.D. James’ witty and inventive continuation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” HOW WE GOT TO NOW WITH STEVEN JOHNSON, featured on this month’s cover, will give the science and technology author’s 1.4 million Twitter followers the opportunity to hear from him about the remarkable people whose amazing ideas led to the technology and science around us. It premieres October 15th on Channel 10. Closer to home, the award-winning MPTV series BLACK NOUVEAU and ADELANTE! return with new seasons of programming that cover and celebrate our diverse community. 4th STREET FORUM ON THE ROAD is back, as well, in a new half-hour format at a new time: Fridays at 7:30 p.m. beginning October 10th on Channel 10. The 21st season of I REMEMBER begins Monday, October 6th, with a look back at the historic 1964 Freedom Summer Civil Rights project. Returning for second seasons are AROUND THE FARM TABLE and WISCONSIN LIFE, two Wisconsin-based series which proved to be quite popular with our viewers this past year. And THE ARTS PAGE’s third season begins Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30 p.m. with features on artists in Delafield, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kohler. On October 17th, the MPTV studios in Milwaukee will host the only debate in southeastern Wisconsin this year between the major party gubernatorial candidates, Republican incumbent Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Mary Burke. Produced with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, the debate will be aired live on Channel 10 at 7 p.m. Later that night, on Channel 36 at 9 p.m., join us for a broadcast of THE TOMMY AWARDS 2014, Wisconsin’s annual high school musical theater

competition, taped in Madison earlier this year. You can also get involved with a number of off-air MPTV events this month: • Our seventh annual MITTENS & MORE service campaign kicks off on October 6th, and we invite you to donate mittens, hats, and scarfs for the coming winter. Last year, we collected more than 6,000 items for 30 community agencies! • The MPTV Appraisal Fair is Saturday, October 11th, at our Auction Studio in Brookfield. Over 50 appraisers and category experts will be on hand to provide verbal appraisals of your cherished items – and some of the more exceptional pieces may be featured on THE ARTS PAGE! You must purchase tickets in advance for the event: call 262-781-4998 or visit mptv.org/events. • Come back to the Auction Studio the following Saturday, October 18th, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., for the MPTV Farmers Market. You’ll find high quality products from area farmers at this monthly event: locally grown produce, specialty meats and cheeses, and gourmet items. • Finally, a portion of the sale of Elegant Farmer pies, fruit breads, hams, and other delicious products, purchased online at mptv.org through October 15th, supports MPTV. Come join PBS Kids characters and MPTV on Saturday, October 25th, at the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago for their annual Autumn Harvest Festival, where you can pick up your order! It’s promising to be a great month to watch programs on Channels 10&36 and to get involved in an MPTV-sponsored event. As always, thank you for watching and supporting Milwaukee Public Television!

F E AT U R E HOW WE GOT TO NOW with Steven Johnson Celebrates the History and Power of Great Ideas Six-Part Series to Premiere on October 15th, at 8p.m. on Channel 10

T

he six-part series, to be produced for PBS by Nutopia and hosted by the popular American science author and media theorist, explores the power and the legacy of great ideas. Topics explored in the series include why and how ideas happen, and their sometimes unintended results, including how the search for clean water opened the way to invention of the iPhone, and how the nagging problem of overheating in a New York printing business led to the invention of air conditioning, which inspired mass migration and a political transformation. Johnson explains how the answers to the questions he poses in each episode — such as “how do we make something cold?” or “how do we create light?”— have driven other discoveries through the web of ideas and innovations that made each finding possible. Tracking each pursuit through history both ancient and contemporary, Johnson unlocks tales of unsung heroes and radical revolutions that changed the world and the way we live in it. “PBS’ science programs explore the big, intriguing questions,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming for PBS. “With the innovative new series HOW WE GOT TO NOW, we’re exploring humankind’s insatiable desire to find answers, invent solutions and make the world a better place.” Alongside the bizarre coincidences, intense rivalries, terrible failures and moments of heroic achievement that made theories into realities, HOW WE GOT TO NOW uses historical precedents and modern-day analogies to explain why it’s not always the smartest person in the room who has the best idea. From frozen foods entrepreneur Clarence Birdseye to Internet visionary Tim Berners-Lee, Hollywood “Golden Age” actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr to mother of radioactivity Marie Curie, and from Thomas Alva Edison to Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, the series shows how the best ideas can come from surprising places (and take years to shape), as well as how amateurs can revolutionize specialist fields, and why patents are sometimes a big idea’s worst enemy. “It has always been true that problem solvers and inventors are social heroes,” said host Steven Johnson. “From the ancient humans who first harnessed fire to the Romans who modernized their cities, to the engineers and computer geniuses who are working today to make a better tomorrow for humanity. This program underscores the contribution of these heroes and the power of their great ideas.” 4

“This series is a love letter to the thinkers, inventors, tinkerers and hackers who have driven human progress,” said Jane Root, executive producer for Nutopia, the studio behind the series. “Our ability to continually adapt and inspire the next generation of creators is vital to our shared future. We hope this show will continue the process of inspiration for generations to come.” Following are descriptions of the six episodes featured in HOW WE GOT TO NOW: • REFRIGERATION – How our mastery of “cold on demand” helped give birth to at least four million babies, created the golden age of Hollywood and unlocked the secrets of the universe. • CLEAN – How our battle against dirt created the sidewalk, the swimming pool, the flat screen and the iPhone. • LIGHT – How our quest to harness light changed our genetic make-up, gave birth to Times Square, Las Vegas, video downloads and an artificial sun. • SOUND – How the journey to harness sound created the modern world of instant communication, but also helped put thousands of planes in the sky, changed the face of warfare and created a new way for teenagers to rebel. • TIME – How our journey to calculate time helped create international trade and travel, victory for the North in the Civil War, GPS and understanding of the origins of human life. • SIGHT – How our quest to see better helped us see the world differently, whether right in front of our noses with the birth of eyeglasses or far beyond our visible universe with the creation of the telescope.

hat was life like for a coal miner in the 1920s? COAL HOUSE, an engaging three-part living-history series, explores this question as three families leave the 21st century behind and swap their modern-day comforts for life in a 1920s Welsh coal-mining community. Just like life in 1927, the men experience the dangers and hardships of work at the mine, the women grapple with endless household chores, and the children face harsh discipline at school and hard work at home.

A Bridge to Vietnam A Look Back at War and Forward to the Connections Wisconsin has to that Country Today By Julie Hill Lehr

12th Annual MPTV Holiday Art & Gift Fair! November 22nd 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. November 23rd 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

F orty years ago the country was struggling to come to grips with the Vietnam War. The nightly news images of men in the trenches fighting for an uncertain cause is burned into the American psyche. What does Vietnam look like today? Journalist Mark Siegrist and an MPTV production team explain how greater Milwaukee is building bridges to the former enemy nation. Some of those relationships are economic, others are humanitarian, or involve family itself. A Bridge to Vietnam looks at how fields of battle are being transformed into a premium crop. How a Milwaukee-based library project is assisting with children’s literacy. And how the adoption of two infants from Hanoi has changed an Elm Grove couple’s life forever. A Bridge to Vietnam airs on Milwaukee Public Television, on Friday, October 3rd at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 4th at 3:30 a.m.; and on Sunday, October 5th at 10:30 pm.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD: RESURRECTING RICHARD III In 2011, a group of amateur historians made an incredible archaeological find: the bones of King Richard III, hunchbacked, with an arrow through the spine. Now, scientists are testing the bones to find out more about the king and also conducting experiments to determine whether Richard could have fought so ferociously in battle with such a severe deformity. 10/26, 9p.m. 36HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

n China in 2003, twin babies Mia and Alexandra were found in a cardboard box and placed in an orphanage, where authorities separated the infants and concealed their sibling relationship. Two sets of prospective adoptive parents — one from California and the other from Norway — meet during the adoption process and launch an investigation that reveals that the girls are sisters. When the girls are eight, Mia and her family go to Norway to visit Alexandra, and discover that the girls are unmistakably and inextricably connected to each other.

MAKERS: WOMEN IN WAR

M

AKERS: Women in War looks at American women’s increasing participation in war—from Vietnam to the present—as nurses, soldiers, journalists, diplomats and spies. Among those featured are Linda Bray, the first woman to lead troops into battle, and Valerie Plame Wilson, whose career was sabotaged after she was “outed” as a highlevel spy. Viewers hear from war correspondents like Molly Moore about life on the battlefield.

NOVA: BEN FRANKLIN'S BALLOONS

T

he first stage in the adventure of human flight began with daring inventors and aeronauts in 18th-century Paris, where a handful of brilliant and colorful pioneers developed all the essential features of today’s hot air and gas balloons. Their exploits fascinated Benjamin Franklin, who was serving in Paris as the American ambassador. NOVA evokes the thrilling and daunting prospect that the balloon pioneers faced as they left Earth for the first time.
