Letter from
Bohdan Zachary Milwaukee PBS is blessed with an extended family of some of the best storytellers in the country. Patricia Gomez. John Gurda. Sandy Maxx. John McGivern. Dan Small. Portia Young. Joanne Williams. These amazing ambassadors reflect the faces, voices and issues of our southeastern Wisconsin community. They represent local storytelling at its finest, hosting popular Milwaukee PBS series that have been honored with numerous local and national awards. In recent years, we’ve even seen these local stories and shows air nationally.
Now, with all eyes on Milwaukee in anticipation of next summer’s Democratic National Convention, we’ve launched something new: a website celebrating the unique storytelling you generously support on Milwaukee PBS. I invite you to visit welcometomke.com. You’ll find inspiring personal messages from Milwaukee PBS’ terrific hosts and see how Milwaukee plays a big role in their personal and professional lives. These are the proud storytellers of our amazing community. Thank you for allowing these stories to be told. Sincerely,
General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

On the Local Scene 10THIRTYSIX™ brings you a follow-up to our nationally acclaimed documentary, KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU'RE NOT ALONE, about youth mental health. Hear from two young high school students touched by the stories in our documentary and how hearing "you're not alone" has made a huge difference in their lives. Plus, find out how the documentary is impacting proposed policy changes when it comes to mental health challenges at the state level. Airs Thursday, October 17th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. ADELANTE tells the inspiring story of Juan Roman, who overcame many obstacles including dropping out of high school. He persevered and graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College's Automotive Maintenance program, changing his life. Also, Christine NeumannOrtiz, Director of Voces de la Frontera, sits down with ADELANTE's host, Patricia Gomez, to discuss their organized protest march held May 2019 in Milwaukee to demand that immigrants be allowed to apply for state driver's licenses. Airs Thursday, October 10th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. BLACK NOUVEAU travels to Madison to meet Corey Pompey, the new director of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. Airs Thursday, October 3rd at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. THE ARTS PAGE presents a special episode dedicated to the Milwaukee Bucks Art Collection. Located inside Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee, this unique collection of 79 original artworks and 43 photographs was crafted by 32 artists and 170 students, many with Wisconsin ties. Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin and curator Tracie Speca-Ventura of Sports & The Arts take us inside the collection. Airs Thursday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. REMEMBERING BRONZEVILLE tells the story of the rise and fall of Bronzeville, an early African American neighborhood in Milwaukee, through the eyes of people who lived there in its heyday. Just as African Americans were starting to find their social footing, the city bulldozed parts of their neighborhood to get rid of rundown housing and create space for a freeway. Discover the Otherworldly Abilities of the Octopus in Nature’s Season 38 Premiere Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. on Milwaukee on PBS
O ctopus behavior has fascinated humans for centuries; their unique shape and skillsets often
provide the inspiration for extraterrestrials in science fiction. New in the world of cephalopod research is the extent to which these intelligent animals are individual personalities – able to recognize faces and interact with other individuals – all of which is an odd adaptation for an animal thought to live an asocial existence. Follow this new science through the story of a pet octopus and its evolving relationship with the passionate American scientist studying it in Nature – Octopus: Making Contact, premiering Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10. Dr. David Scheel, a professor of marine biology at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, raises a day octopus in a tank in his home with assistance from his teenage daughter Laurel. Given the name Heidi, the octopus bonds with the Scheels, showing recognition of their faces, excitement when the humans come near and an inclination for playing with Laurel. Scheel
links his discoveries — which also include Heidi’s demonstrated abilities to change color, solve puzzles, use tools and escape through small spaces — to octopus findings from all over the world, further proving the extraordinary intelligence of these incredible creatures. “Octopuses followed a different evolutionary path, making them different from all other intelligent animals on this planet,” said David Scheel. “I am less intrigued by the differences and more interested in our similarities. What kind of a connection is possible with an animal that has three hearts and blue blood running through its veins? It’s been a privilege to have a relationship with such a strange and wonderful creature.” Now in its 38th season on PBS, NATURE brings the wonders of natural history to millions of American viewers. The series has won more than 700 honors from the television industry, the international wildlife film communities and environmental organizations, including 18 Emmys and three Peabody Awards.

Looking for a Community Service Project? Milwaukee PBS Needs Warm Hearts to Help Keep Hands Warm Mittens & More Community Drive to be Held September 30 – October 27 The weather is starting to turn cold, and we need viewers to help us keep hands, heads and hearts warm this winter. The 12th annual Mittens & More community drive collects new and handmade mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for those in need in southeastern Wisconsin. Milwaukee PBS needs organizations and individuals to get those knitting needles moving, or to help collect store-bought items. The items will be distributed to infants, children, teens, women and men from throughout our viewing area. This is a great fall service project for your church, troop, knitting circle or other service organization! Items will be collected through October 27, with collection sites throughout southeastern Wisconsin. To find a collection site near you, visit MilwaukeePBS.org or call (414) 297-7520. Volunteers are also needed to help sort, box and distribute items in early November. For more information on volunteering or donating to Mittens & More contact: Julie Hill Lehr at hillleja@matc.edu or call (414) 297-7518
Local Film Tells Untold Milwaukee Story Premieres on Milwaukee PBS in October
‘REMEMBERING BRONZEVILLE’ Premieres on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.1 on October 31 Outsiders called it a ghetto, but the African Americans who lived there called it home. REMEMBERING BRONZEVILLE tells the story of the rise and fall of Bronzeville, an early African American neighborhood in Milwaukee, through the eyes of people who lived there. Remembering Bronzeville explores how communities are created and maintained, and evaluates what the social cost of destroying the neighborhood was, especially when its residents had limited housing options. It also features efforts by present-day artists, developers and local government to recreate the spirit of Bronzeville in a redevelopment project on the Milwaukee’s near north side. REMEMBERING BRONZEVILLE airs on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.1 on Thursday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m., and on Milwaukee PBS Channel 36.1 on Sunday, November 3 at 4:00 p.m and Tuesday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. Produced by local filmmakers Karen Slattery and Mark Doremus.

By Popular Demand We Are Returning
July 27th - August 2nd, 2020 This summer, Milwaukee PBS General Manager Bohdan Zackary and Director of Membership Kim Sosa had a wonderful time in England, joined by 38 enthusiastic Milwaukee PBS supporters. They co-hosted “To the Manor Born,” a tour which featured locations near and dear to Anglophiles and fans of public television. The first stop was Windsor Castle; regrettably, the Queen wasn’t in town, so we didn’t get to enjoy tea with her. On day two, we visited the beloved Highclere Castle and had lots of fun touring the private residence. Even a sudden rainstorm didn’t deter many of us from walking the magnificent grounds and gardens. Jane Austen’s hometown, Bath, was next and is spectacular. The residents are welcoming and no matter what street we walked, there were flowers hanging in planter boxes from windows. We even had a celebrity sighting of Clémence Poésy from THE TUNNEL. For most of their group, the trip’s highlight was Port Isaac, the Cornwall village where DOC MARTIN is filmed. The village was unwinding as we arrived, as the show had just finished a marathon 88-day production schedule a week earlier. The sun was shining, the weather was warm and we visited all the famous locations from the show. The hotels throughout the trip were splendid and a few, regal and historic. As much as we enjoyed each and every location they visited, what made the trip truly wonderful were the Milwaukee PBS supporters who joined us. Several were from out of state, including Illinois, Maryland and Texas! We’ve posted photo highlights here tinyurl.com/milwpbslondon2019. Milwaukee PBS is pleased to announce we’ll be heading back again next year! For anyone who missed this year’s tour or loved it so much they want to experience it again, “To the Manor Born” will visit the same PBS-inspired locations from July 27 to August 2, 2020. We know you’ll appreciate the outstanding service provided by our friends at Transcendent Travel, led by Andrew Lannerd. You can learn more about it or secure your spot today by calling (866) 654-7508.
