T
his month MPTV would like to recognize the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation. It has been a supporter of numerous patriotic programs on MPTV, including this summer’s A Capitol Fourth, America’s annual Independence Day Concert celebration extravaganza, and the National Memorial Day Concert. In addition, the Michels Family Foundation is a proud underwriter of PBS’s American Experience, the longest running and most watched history series on television. The award-winning program celebrates the people and events in our nation’s past that have shaped our nation’s identity and heritage. On Wednesday, September 15th, American Experience will feature the life, career, and legacy of the animation pioneer, Walt Disney. As a cartoonist, Disney created the animated character of Mickey Mouse in 1928, and numerous other cartoon characters and animations. He also produced many popular films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Mary Poppins, and created the theme park Disneyland. For over five decades, Michels Corporation has been a pioneer in innovative new technologies. Starting as a small pipeline contractor in 1959 and becoming one of the largest utility contractors in North America. Michels offers construction, engineering, and procurement services to keep pace with the growing demand in the energy, transportation, telecommunications and utility construction industries. “My family and I are pleased to underwrite programming that focuses on patriotism and the history of our country,” said Ruth L. Michels, CEO of Michels Corporation. “We join Milwaukee Public Television viewers in appreciating programs on these important and inspiring subjects, and are proud to help make them available to everyone." The generous and most appreciative support of the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation ensures that patriotic programming and American Experience continue to be shown on Milwaukee Public Television. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV, contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

t would not be a surprise to hear you say that you’ve already seen The Civil War – the landmark film by Ken Burns – on MPTV. Many of us were among the 40 million viewers who watched it during its initial broadcast back in September 1990, making it the most-watched program ever to air on PBS. But we are encouraging you to tune in Monday-Friday, September 7th-11th, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10 when we rebroadcast the mini-series, now remastered to look and sound the way Burns and his production team intended it to 25 years ago. So much has changed in the way productions are processed for broadcast since The Civil War premiered. Not only are we at MPTV committed to presenting compelling content, we also strive to offer the highest quality audio and video on our programs, so we are particularly excited about this remastering and eager to share the new version with you! Paul Barnes, the editor and post-production supervisor of The Civil War, says the new version is visually “steadier, sharper in focus, cleaner and with a greatly enhanced visual beauty. The color is now the way it was intended to be when the film was originally shot…. The overall end result of the remix is that the sound feels richer and more enveloping, especially the music and sound effects, while actually imparting a greater definition to the dialogue.” He concludes, “The digital remastering process has created a film that will feel like a brand new, richly textured, and more enveloping viewing experience – one that we hope will only deepen the viewers’ emotional response to this turning point in our nation’s history.” We can’t wait!
Also this month we’re airing the story of an extraordinarily creative man on Walt Disney: American Experience, Monday and Tuesday, September 14th-15th, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. The two-part, four-hour film examines Disney’s complex life and enduring legacy. It includes rare archival footage from the Disney vaults, scenes from some of his greatest films, and interviews with biographers, animators, and artists who worked on early films, including “Snow White,” and the designers who helped turn his dream of Disneyland into reality. Finally, three of our award-winning local weekly series – The Arts Page, Black Nouveau, and ¡Adelante! – return this month with their new seasons. Among the many stories the programs are working on are features about performances by regional arts groups: The Arts Page on the Wisconsin Philharmonic’s “Music That Paints a Picture” family concert; Black Nouveau on Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of the musical “Dreamgirls”; and ¡Adelante! on First Stage’s world premiere of “Luchadora!” Please tune in! Thank you for your support which makes possible entertaining and informative television like this – TV that is truly worth watching – on Channels 10&36!

INDIAN SUMMERS
The Raj, Romance, and Revolution
Premieres September 27th, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10 The Daily Telegraph (London) lauded the “swooningly romantic backdrop” and asked, “Is Indian Summers the new Downton Abbey?' And the Daily Mirror (London) found a garden of delights: “gripping interwoven storylines … great performances … stunning scenery … and a large helping of racy romance.” Framed by the beginning and end of the summer season, when India’s British rulers left the hot plains for the cool slopes of Simla, Indian Summers centers on three brother-sister pairs. Ralph Whelan (Lloyd-Hughes) is the private secretary to the British Viceroy of India (Malahide). Ralph is an upwardly mobile, politically ambitious bachelor, hiding a checkered past. He is joined by Alice (West), his beautiful younger sister who appears suddenly from England with her little boy—and conspicuously without her husband.
I
n 1932 the height of privilege was to be British in India, and the high point was the summer season at the hard-partying colonial retreat of Simla in the Himalayan foothills. Rude reality intrudes on this spectacular paradise in Indian Summers, starring Julie Walters (Oscar® nominee for Billy Elliot and Educating Rita) as the wily hostess of Simla society. Set during the twilight era of the British Raj, the meticulously recreated series airs in nine episodes on MASTERPIECE, Sundays, September 27th November 22nd, at 8p.m. on Channel 10. MASTERPIECE is presented on PBS by WGBH Boston.
Joining the cast are a galaxy of British, Indian, and Pakistani stars, including Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Madame Bovary), Nikesh Patel (Bedlam), Jemima West (The Borgias), Roshan Seth (Gandhi), Patrick Malahide (The Paradise), and Bollywood legends Lillete Dubey (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Alyy Khan (Sharpe's Challenge). Also appearing are Alexander Cobb (Mr. Selfridge), Aysha Kala (Shameless), Olivia Grant (Endeavour), Edward Hogg (The Borgias), Fiona Glascott (Anton Chekhov's The Duel), Craig Parkinson (Line of Duty), and Richard McCabe (Wallander). Critics were awed during Indian Summers’ recent UK broadcast. The Guardian (London) proclaimed: “This is the stuff of which epics are made … one of the most gorgeous, exciting shows around.”
4
Next there is Aafrin Dalal (Patel), an idealistic clerk in the elite Indian Civil Service, who wins Ralph’s trust by saving his life. Aafrin seems marked for rapid advancement in the British bureaucracy, but his sister Sooni (Kala) threatens his career by agitating tirelessly for national independence. Then there are two adrift Americans: Eugene Mathers (Hogg), an expatriate architect from a wealthy Chicago family, who has been taken in by Ralph after being stricken with malaria; and Eugene’s seductive sister, Madeline (Grant), who comes to care for him—and ends up caring for Ralph. Pulling the strings that animate much of the action is Cynthia Coffin (Walters), a manipulative military widow who presides like an empress over the Royal Simla Club, where the ruling class lounges in subtropical splendor, sipping gin and tonics, running the country, and dancing the night away. Apart from this in-group are two other contingents representing British imperialism: tea plantation owner Stafford Armitage (McCabe), recently joined by his eager and inexperienced nephew Ian McLeod (Cobb); and missionary Dougie Raworth (Parkinson), whose rescue of a nameless mixed-race boy launches a major storyline in the series. Meanwhile, Dougie’s desperately homesick wife, Sarah (Glascott), is slowly losing her mind in this strange land. Needless to say, illicit encounters, assignations, and forbidden affairs abound. And there are also complications offstage, where pressure is building for an end to British rule. Gandhi has recently been arrested on the viceroy’s orders, and he is staging a hunger strike from his cell, exerting pressure that renders the world’s greatest empire helpless.

ts name stirs images of the savage, the untamable. Legend paints it as a solitary, blood-thirsty killer that roams the icy heart of the frozen north, taking down prey as large as moose, crushing bones to powder with its powerful jaws. But there is another image of the wolverine that is just beginning to emerge, one that is far more complex than its reputation suggests. Hard-wired to endure an environment of scarcity, the wolverine is one of the most efficient and resourceful carnivores on Earth.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WALT DISNEY
W
alt Disney was uniquely adept at art as well as commerce, a master filmmaker who harnessed the power of technology and storytelling. This new two-part, four-hour film examines Disney’s complex life and enduring legacy, featuring rare archival footage from the Disney vaults, scenes from some of his greatest films, and interviews with biographers, animators and artists who worked on early films, including Snow White, and the designers who helped turn his dream of Disneyland into reality.
2 part series runs Sept. 14th and 15th, starting at 8p.m. on CH 10

P
ope Francis calls himself ‘a sinner’ certainly is a man of contradictions, but who is Jorge Mario Bergoglio? How did the man who was loved and loathed by his fellow Jesuits back in Argentina become Pope? Can he hold the Roman Catholic Church together and reform it at the same time?

or 15 years, GREAT MUSEUMS has crisscrossed the country, showcasing the breadth and diversity of America's museum world. GREAT MUSEUMS' newest release takes viewers to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Opened in 1995, the museum, designed by architect I.M. Pei, is a spectacular glass pyramid, reflecting the idea that Rock and Roll is a "prism" through which we can more clearly see and understand our culture and ourselves.
