Letter from
Bohdan Zachary A s this extraordinary year continues, I’m so grateful you’re along for this journey with Milwaukee PBS. It’s been so uplifting to hear your messages of appreciation over the past six months your continued support is deeply touching. You’ve heard me mention Milwaukee PBS Passport several times over the past couple of years. This special member benefit gives an additional level of access to programs in the PBS Video App and I know many of you have taken special advantage of Passport during the pandemic. As moments of escape have become more important than ever, I wanted to make sure you’re aware of some recent additions available exclusively through Milwaukee PBS Passport. First, we announced last month the entire Ken Burns library is now available to Passport members. This means you can access his prolific body of work whenever and wherever you’d like and revisit epic storytelling, like CIVIL WAR, COUNTRY MUSIC or THE VIETNAM WAR. We’ve also added some captivating BBC period dramas this month, including the modern classics CRANFORD and RETURN TO CRANFORD (with Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton and DOWNTON ABBEY’s Jim Carter) and a few

to excite Jane Austen fans, including SENSE & SENSIBILITY (with Lucy Boynton and Dominic Cooper) and MANSFIELD PARK. I think we’ve all learned how important and uplifting a good program binge can be during this time. This month also sees the broadcast return of the new season of LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX and the premiere of the new children’s show ELINOR WONDERS WHY (more information on both shows can be found in this issue of FINE TUNING). Fall is always a time for some exciting new shows to debut and—even during a pandemic— this year is no different. Stay tuned for a few more new shows and returning favorites next month! Please remember, your support is what allows Milwaukee PBS to provide these exceptional programs. Thank you for your generous investment in our community. Sincerely,
Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

INDEPENDENT LENS : WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?
One of the most celebrated theatrical releases of 2018, WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? takes an intimate look at America's favorite neighbor: Fred Rogers. The documentary tells the story of a softspoken minister, puppeteer, writer and producer whose show was beamed daily into homes across America for more than 30 years. In his beloved television program, "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," Rogers and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life's weightiest issues in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn't been anything like Mister Rogers on television before, and there hasn't been since. 9/8, 8p.m. 36HD

Critically Acclaimed Drama LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX Premieres Sunday, September 20, on Milwaukee PBS LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX will return for its fourth full season in the U.S. premiering on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 September 20 at 7:00 p.m. The four-episode series will air as part of PBS’s Sunday night drama lineup and will stream nationally on PBS.org and the PBS Video App. The heartwarming triple BAFTA-winning series reunites its multi-award-winning ensemble of Derek Jacobi (VICIOUS), Anne Reid (SANDITON), Nicola Walker (UNFORGOTTEN), Sarah Lancashire (HAPPY VALLEY) and Timothy West (GENTLEMAN JACK). LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX tells the story of love-struck Alan Buttershaw (Jacobi) and Celia Dawson (Reid), who rediscover their love for each other 60 years after they first met. “We are so pleased to bring this PBS fan-favorite back to our robust Sunday night drama collection this fall,” said Maria Bruno Ruiz Vice President, Program Scheduling, PBS. “Since it premiered stateside seven years ago, LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX has delighted viewers with its heartwarming love story and engaging characters." As they enter their seventh year of marriage, Alan and Celia settle into a lovely new home, but they aren’t seeing eye to eye. Clashing politics, a new job and other distractions create tension in the household. Meanwhile, Celia’s daughter, Caroline (Lancashire), gets emotionally embroiled at work, while up at the farm, Gillian (Walker) faces trouble with a giraffe! Into all this flies Alan’s brother, Ted (West), but he only bought a one-way ticket.
MILWAUKEE PBS FALL EVENTS CANCELED Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and out of an abundance of caution, Milwaukee PBS has canceled the 2020 Milwaukee PBS Appraisal Fair and this fall’s charitable Mittens and More drive. This year, please either make your normal Mittens and More donations directly to agencies in need or hold them for next year’s drive. Milwaukee PBS currently plans for both events to return in 2021. Please visit milwaukeepbs.org for complete program schedule.

Johnson Controls, with its world headquarters in Glendale, has been a long-time supporter of two of Milwaukee PBS’s locally produced series, ADELANTE and BLACK NOUVEAU, both recipients of numerous accolades and honors. ADELANTE celebrates and examines the rich heritage and timely issues of the Latinx community. BLACK NOUVEAU focuses on changemakers and issues that impact the African American community in southeastern Wisconsin. As both of these communities have been particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, ADELANTE and BLACK NOUVEAU are producing “Stories of our Pandemic,” telling stories of health, help and hope. Recent BLACK NOUVEAU episodes include the “Beyond the Virus and the Protests” virtual town hall, a conversation with City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Jeanette Kowalik, and a visit to the Bread of Healing Clinic. A recent ADELANTE episode focused on the higher rates of infection in the workplace facing many Latinx workers in Wisconsin and a conversation with a physician at the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center Clinic.
Johnson Controls is a global diversified technology and industrial leader serving customers in more than 160 counties. It creates intelligent buildings, efficient energy solutions, integrated infrastructure and next generation transportation systems – innovation that helps contribute to the quality of people’s lives around the world. Johnson Controls’ commitment to sustainability dates back to its roots in 1885, with the invention of the first electric room thermostat. The company is ranked 14th in Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 16th Annual “100 Best Corporate Citizens List.” Grady L. Crosby, Vice President Public Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer and President of the Johnson Controls Foundation shared, “Johnson Controls recognizes that our diversity as a community is our strength. We are grateful for programs such as ADELANTE and BLACK NOUVEAU, especially in the midst of the pandemic and during the current movement for racial justice. These programs give voice to issues and concerns that are sometimes passed over by the majority culture. That’s something we’re proud to support.” Milwaukee PBS is most appreciative of the underwriting commitment and support of Johnson Controls. Mimi Notestein Director, Foundation Relations
