This month’s spotlight program is MUHAMMAD ALI, the new, fourpart documentary from Ken Burns that examines one of the best-known and most indelible figures of the 20th century. You’ll be captivated as you learn the complex and powerful history of the threetime heavyweight boxing champion who insisted on being himself unconditionally and became a global icon and inspiration to people everywhere.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE takes a look at another legendary figure of the 20th century whose presence is still deeply felt today with “CITIZEN HEARST.” William Randolph Hearst’s media empire was vast and spanned decades. By the time he died in 1951 at the age of 88, he’d left a legacy that completely transformed the media’s role in American life and politics.

And as we mark 20 years since the horrific terrorist attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001, FRONTLINE presents “AMERICA AFTER 9/11,” which takes an in-depth look at how America’s response following the attacks reshaped our world and our democracy.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR: THE FIRST Discover the story of the Supreme Court’s first female justice. A pioneer who both reflected and shaped an era, she was the deciding vote in cases on some of the 20th century’s most controversial issues—including race, gender and reproductive rights.

And on the local front, coming Thursday, September 30, I’m excited to announce the premiere of A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION: THE MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY’S NEW HOME. This 30-minute special takes a look at the amazing transformation of the new Bradley Symphony Center, just days before we bring you the historic live broadcast of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s first subscription concert in that space.

Judy Nugent and guide Erik Haataja demonstrate the strategies and process of catching browns in the winter in the Milwaukee Harbor, then Judy goes ice fishing for northern pike on Delavan Lake with guide John Reddy. And Tom Newbauer ice fishes on Lake Nagawicka for panfish with guide Lynn Niklasch.

Milwaukee PBS travel experience to Glacier National Park

uly’s Milwaukee PBS viewer trip to Glacier National Park was filled with majestic beauty, scenic vistas and friends, both old and new.

Highlights included a guided tour on one of the famous 1930s Red Buses that took our group into the heart of the park and on Going-to-the-Sun Road—one of the best scenic drives in the country—which led to the top of the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, that at 6,646 feet is the highest elevation reachable by car in the park. The beauty of Lake McDonald, St. Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island took everyone’s breath away, as

well as the flora, fauna, glaciers and geology encountered throughout the tour.

culinary experience and a perfect place to unwind at sunset with a book, drink or conversation.

There was also an outing to relax and take in the scenery of the valley aboard Sinopah, the oldest wooden boat in the park’s fleet, while learning about the rich Blackfeet tribal history surrounding the Two Medicine area. Those seeking extra adventure explored the marvelous hiking trails available throughout the park. Our stay at Glacier Park Lodge, located at the foot of the Rocky Mountain Front, provided a delicious

Muhammad Ali – New Ken Burns Four-Part Series Explores Life of Legendary Boxer

T

he new series, which was in development for six years, was also written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon, whose previous collaborations with Burns include THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE (2012), JACKIE ROBINSON (2016) and EAST LAKE MEADOWS: A PUBLIC HOUSING STORY (2020).

The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility and power in the ring, and his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

Drawing from an extraordinary trove of archival footage and photographs, contemporary music, and the insights and memories of eyewitnesses— including family and friends, journalists, boxers and historians, among others—Burns, Burns and McMahon have created a sweeping portrait of an American icon. The series details the story of the athlete who called himself—and was considered by many to be—”the greatest of all time” and competed in some of the most dramatic and widely viewed sporting events ever, including “The Fight of the Century” and “The Thrilla in Manila,” both against his great rival Joe Frazier, and “The Rumble in the Jungle,” in which he defeated George Foreman to regain the heavyweight title that was stripped from him seven years earlier.

MUHAMMAD ALI also captures Ali’s principled resistance to the Vietnam War, his steadfast commitment to his Muslim faith, and his complex relationships with Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X, who profoundly shaped his life and worldview.

“Muhammad Ali was the very best at what he did,” said Ken Burns. “He was arguably America’s greatest athlete, and his unflinching insistence that he be unabashedly himself at all times made him a beacon for generations of people around

the world seeking to express their own humanity.” Burns also explored the life of the first African American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, in his 2004 film UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS: THE RISE AND FALL OF JACK JOHNSON. While he is largely celebrated today as an icon of American sport and culture, Ali was not always widely embraced. At times he was reviled by many in American society, especially white Americans and white members of the media, who rejected his faith and feared his involvement with the Nation of Islam. Ali also faced a firestorm of criticism when he said, “I ain’t got nothing against them Viet Cong” and refused induction into the United States Army, citing his religious beliefs—a stance that would result in five years of legal jeopardy and a three-and-a-halfyear banishment from boxing.

“Ali is rightly celebrated for his athleticism in the ring,” said Sarah Burns, “but he was equally heroic in his willingness to stand up for what he believed was right.”
