THE VIETNAM WAR A Film By Ken Burns & Lynn Novick
Premieres September 17th at 7p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10
T he Vietnam War, a new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, will premiere September 17 at 7p.m. on Milwaukee
PBS Channel 10. The first five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 17, through Thursday, September 21, and the final five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 24, through Thursday, September 28. Each episode will premiere at 7p.m. with a repeat broadcast following the premiere.
Beginning Tuesday, October 3, the series will re-air on a weekly basis through November 28, at 9:00 p.m. ET n an immersive narrative, Burns and Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. “The Vietnam War was a decade of agony that took the lives of more than 58,000 Americans,” Burns said. “Not since the Civil War have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then who wasn’t affected in some way — from those who fought and sacrificed in the war, to families of service members and POWs, to those who protested the war in open conflict with their government and fellow citizens. More than 40 years after it ended, we can’t forget Vietnam, and we are still arguing about why it went wrong, who was to blame and whether it was all worth it.” “We are all searching for some meaning in this terrible tragedy. Ken and I have tried to shed new light on the war by looking at it from the bottom up, the top down and from all sides,” Novick said. “In addition to dozens of Americans who shared their stories, we interviewed many Vietnamese on both the winning and losing sides, and were surprised to learn that the war remains as painful and unresolved for them as it is for us. Within this almost incomprehensibly destructive event, we discovered profound, universal human truths, as well as uncanny resonances with recent events.” Ten years in the making, the series brings the war and the chaotic epoch it encompassed viscerally to life. Written by Geoffrey C. Ward, produced by Sarah Botstein, Novick and Burns, it includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and revelatory audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. “Ever since THE CIVIL WAR, Ken and Lynn have been behind some of the most important documentary films ever shown on television, films that have in fact made television history and created national conversations around who we are as Americans,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “The Vietnam War stands out as an unmatched documentary achievement about one of the most transformative periods in modern American history. Through our comprehensive broadcast and streaming schedules, as well as our outreach efforts, our goal is to reach as many people as possible to spark a national discussion about the issues raised in the series, in a way that only public television can.”
THE VIETNAM WAR SCREENING Thursday, September 7th at the War Memorial Center. 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee

METTLE & HONOR:
V I E T NA M
SEPTEMBER 18TH AT 8:30p.m. ON CHANNEL 10 Mettle and Honor: Vietnam tells the stories of Wisconsin veterans who served in America’s most controversial war. Emmy-Award-winning journalist Mark Concannon interviews various members of the military: a Milwaukee attorney who was among the first U.S. forces to take part in the conflict, serving as an advisor and Vietnamese translator before American ground forces arrived; Milwaukee TV personality John Malan who recounts how he was wounded in a tank battle; a medic who witnessed the last moments of life for men who had become close friends, and other veterans who survived brutal attacks in the unfamiliar territory of the jungle that created a great advantage for fierce enemy troops who were fighting on their home ground. Mettle and Honor: Vietnam takes viewers to the battlefront of southeast Asia through the eyes of Wisconsin vets who risked their lives serving their country, but often were not only not recognized for their bravery but ostracized for being part of a conflict that was not popular back home. Many of these veterans are still dealing with the psychological impact of their Vietnam experiences from during the war in the heat of combat, and after the conflict, adjusting to life back in the states which sometimes included a hostile reception upon returning home. SHOLEM ALEICHEM: LAUGHING IN THE DARKNESS
The collected stories of Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) became the basis for “Fiddler on the Roof ”, but there is much more to the author’s life than a Broadway melody. It profiles one of literature’s great humorists and tells how, in a time of great fear, he inspired a new, modern Jewish identity through laughter. 9/19, 8p.m. 36HD

on the local scene September signals the beginning of school, the upcoming crisp fall air, and new television programs. This month Milwaukee PBS celebrates veterans and reflects on the Vietnam War. 10thirtysix looks at the Vietnam War from the Hmong perspective. The Hmong population in Milwaukee and the surrounding areas is significant. This segment looks back at their stories of the Vietnam War, escape from Laos to seek refuge in Thailand after aiding America during the war, and their transition to becoming American citizens. ¡Adelante! discusses Waukesha School District’s dual language program, talks to psychologist Kerry Ann Sheffield Quimi who explains why fighting discrimination is so important, and the Muslim Community of Milwaukee joins forces with other minorities to fight the hostilities President Trump’s executive orders generated. Around The Corner with John McGivern visits Oshkosh and Sturgeon Bay. John and the crew are out shooting Season 7. Keep an eye out for them in your community.
Black Nouveau features stories of Black Veterans. It also celebrates the African-American Genealogical Society of Milwaukee’s 25th anniversary.
Mettle and Honor: Vietnam tells the stories of veterans who served in America’s most controversial war. Emmy-award-winning journalist Mark Concannon interviews Wisconsin veterans who risked their lives serving our country. Even today many of them still suffer from the psychological impact of the war. Outdoor Wisconsin explores the Orvis fly-fishing school on the Sheboygan River, Emmy Fink goes kayaking with the Tichigan Lake ‘Yakers, and host Dan Small looks at an environmental project to remove invasive brush at the Honey Creek Wildlife Area in Racine County. The Arts Page showcases local art in September, artists include contemporary glass artist Beth Lipman, master artist Ulana Tyshynsky, and architect and watercolor painter Tom Kubala. Don’t miss features on Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera and Shorewood’s Ghost Train.
