T
his month MPTV would like to recognize one of our newest underwriters, Columbia Center Birth Hospital, an independent, specialty birth hospital, with a focus on supporting mothers and their families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. In July, Columbia Center Birth Hospital sponsored a three-part BBC documentary series on the first 3 trimesters of a baby’s development, Nine Months That Made You, on MPTV. Columbia Center Birth Hospital was founded in 2001, and is the only hospital in Wisconsin dedicated to childbirth. It is located just north of Milwaukee and is committed to giving women the resources and support necessary to have a caring and supportive birth experience. The boutique state-of-the art facility offers practical education classes and support to everyone involved, so that moms, dads, siblings, or adoptive and foster parents are ready for the new baby’s arrival. Columbia Center Birth Hospital offers a wide range of onsite services, including perinatal assessment, childbirth classes, breast-feeding support, moms’ groups, doula support, courses for siblings, and infant CPR to name a few. It is accredited by the State of Wisconsin and is a member of the Wisconsin Hospital Association. It has 17 birthing suites, with a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio in labor. CRNA’s and neonatologists are available around the clock 7 days a week. Columbia Center Birth Hospital has received numerous awards, including: a Top Patient Satisfaction Award, Consumer Reports’ highest rating for avoiding C-Sections, Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospital for Patient Experience in Obstetrics, and the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award. According to Candy Casey, R.N., President, and CEO of Columbia Center Birth Hospital, “Milwaukee Public Television offers a wonderfully diverse range of programming to our community, and we couldn’t be more excited to see a series on pregnancy featured. MPTV serves to educate and connect with our community, a priority that both of our organizations share. As Wisconsin’s only birth-focused hospital, we’re honored to have the opportunity to join MPTV to underwrite Nine Months That Made You.” We are excited to welcome the Columbia Center Birth Hospital as an underwriting sponsor on MPTV, and appreciate their support and commitment. Maureen Bradley, Director of Underwriting: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

o many of our friends on Facebook are posting pictures of their kids on the first day of school right now. On college campuses, new freshman are negotiating their way through new surroundings. And you? You’re headed back to school this month, too! September 12th – 17th PBS presents “Spotlight Education”, a special week of programming featuring reports about America’s students and new models of learning. MPTV is your virtual classroom all week with scientific programs like Forces of Nature, political history on The Contenders – 16 for ’16 and social studies on TED Talks “Education Revolution”. We’ll take you inside schools and profile students on “POV: All the Difference”, “August to June: Bringing Life to School” and “Craft in America: Teachers”. Kicking off a fresh season of programming at MPTV, we are excited to announce that beginning September 5th, the 6:00 p.m. broadcast of the PBS Newshour will move from Channel 36 to Channel 10. This flagship program, ranked as one of the most trusted news resources, is poised to reach even more viewers on Channel 10, which enriches MPTV’s mission to inform the public. Our second daily broadcast of the program at 10:30 p.m. will continue to air on Channel 36. MPTV’s award-winning local productions Black Nouveau, ¡Adelante! and The Arts Page return this month with all new episodes at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 36. And, while you might think Dan Small
of Outdoor Wisconsin and the crew of Around the Corner with John McGivern are taking this semester off, we’re glad to let you know they’ve all been hard at work on new seasons that will debut in January 2017. Of course, feedback is the best measure of how MPTV is performing for you, and we encourage you to reach to us with your thoughts and comments at mptvsupport@matc.edu. Consider it a “report card” you’re submitting for us as a review of how the station is utilizing the vital financial investment you provide. Thank you for your generous support of Milwaukee Public Television,

Season 2 Aidan Turner stars as the courageous Cornishman in an all-new season of Poldark on

either pestilence, starvation, nor betrayal can stop Ross Poldark from fighting for justice in his native Cornwall. Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) returns as the exofficer, class warrior, lover, and mining entrepreneur, called by The New York Times “the noblest, hottest, most downto-earth hero.” Also back is co-star Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley), playing Demelza, the miner’s daughter who is Ross’ equal in passion, wit, and daring—which is, of course, why they marry. Critics gave a warm reception to Poldark’s first season, with Variety writing that “MASTERPIECE has unearthed another gem,” and “ Entertainment Weekly ” urging readers to “make an appointment with your TV to tune into Poldark.” The “Philadelphia” Inquirer marveled at the title character: “He’s a cross between Robin Hood and Batman.” The returning cast includes Heida Reed (One Day) as Ross’ first love, Elizabeth, who broke his heart by marrying his duplicitous cousin Francis, played with intriguing ambiguity by Kyle Soller (Anna Karenina). Also back are Jack Farthing (Poirot) as George Warleggan, the arch-villain who would rather see Ross dead, a situation he does his best to arrange; along with Philip Davis (White Teeth) and Beatie Edney (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) as Ross’ exasperating servants, Jud and Prudie Paynter. New this season—or thrust into prominence from last— are Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love) as Caroline Penvenen, a flirtatious young heiress under the watchful eye of her rich uncle, Ray, played by John Nettles (Midsomer Murders); Luke Norris (Titanic) as earnest young doctor Dwight Enys, who only has time for his patients— and for Caroline; and Henry Garrett (Zero Dark Thirty) as Captain McNeil, Ross’ old comrade from the war, now hunting smugglers and an opportunity to woo a certain married lady. All of these characters inhabit the imaginative world created by Winston Graham in his bestselling “Poldark” novels, published between 1945 and 2002. Comprising an even dozen volumes, the epic commences in 1783, as 4

British officer Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall, fresh from the American Revolutionary War. MASTERPIECE’s Poldark, Season 2 takes the plot into Graham’s fourth volume, “Warleggan”. Viewers of the first season will recall that Ross shocks his relatives and neighbors when he shows up from America, since all had presumed him dead. Then he sets about upending their lives—threatening the copper mining interests of his uncle and cousin, Charles and Francis Poldark, and the rival operation of upstart George Warleggan. He is also ensnared in a romantic web that connects him, Francis, and George to the beautiful Elizabeth. Nevertheless, Ross happily marries Demelza and they have a daughter. But in the final episode of Season 1, an epidemic takes the child away, and a shipwreck and drowning are blamed on Ross. So at the start of Season 2, Ross stands accused of murder and “wrecking”— luring a cargo ship to the rocks for plunder. It’s a capital offense, the judge is unsympathetic, hostile witnesses have been bribed and Ross appears headed for the gallows. It’s just the first in a string of suspenseful episodes every bit as precipitous as the steep cliffs of Cornwall.

His Finest Hour

Michael Gambon plays Winston Churchill in an all-star production based on an unsung incident from his famous life coming to MASTERPIECE on Channel 10 on September 11th at 7p.m.
M
ichael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Casual Vacancy) plays the greatest statesman of the twentieth century in his most difficult hour: a debilitating stroke which he seeks to hide from the world. Based on a true incident in the life of Winston Churchill and directed by three-time Emmy® nominee Charles Sturridge (Shackleton, Brideshead Revisited), Churchill’s Secret co-stars Romola Garai (The Hour), Lindsay Duncan (Sherlock), Bill Paterson (Little Dorrit), Matthew Macfadyen (Any Human Heart), Tara Fitzgerald (Jane Eyre), Rachel Stirling (The Bletchley Circle), Daisy Lewis (Downton Abbey), Alex Jennings (Silk), and a host of other brilliant actors. The movie-length drama is an adaptation of Jonathan Smith’s acclaimed 2015 novel, “The Churchill Secret: KBO”, which was hailed as “delightful, funny, heartwarming” by ”The Mail on Sunday” (London) and praised for its “elegance and wit” by “The New Statesman” (London). “KBO” in the book’s title stands for Churchill’s favorite advice in the face of adversity: “keep buggering on.”
The action opens in the summer of 1953. Churchill, age 78, is prime minister for the second time and as pugnacious as ever—until he is felled by a severe stroke while hosting a state dinner at 10 Downing Street. Lady Churchill (Duncan) manages to conceal the seriousness of her husband’s sudden incapacity, while he is evaluated by his personal physician, Lord Moran (Paterson), and later transported in worsening condition to his country home, Chartwell. 10
Summoned to care for the apparently dying prime minister is a remarkable young nurse, Millie Appleyard (Garai), who treats the world’s most famous man as she would any other difficult patient: with compassion, firmness, and occasional indulgence. In the weeks that follow, the two bond over the Victorian poet William Ernest Henley, whose celebrated poem, “Invictus” (Latin for “unconquered”), helps inspire Churchill to relearn to speak, stand, and walk. He is also determined to hold onto the reins of power, and Churchill’s Secret tells the astonishing story of a bedridden, incapacitated leader who plots to outwit the high government officials who are maneuvering to replace him. Chief among these is Anthony Eden ( Jennings), Churchill’s right-hand man and designated successor. Then there is Churchill’s family, of whom Lord Moran observes, “There’s a price to pay for greatness, but the great seldom pay it themselves.” Those who paid were Churchill’s children, who grew up in the permanent shadow of their exuberant and ambitious father. When Diana (Fitzgerald), Randolph (Macfadyen), Sarah (Stirling), and Mary (Lewis) arrive at Chartwell to comfort their stricken parent, all except Mary fall to bickering and boozing— hardly an environment conducive to convalescence. Through it all, Lady Churchill tries to keep the family peace and above all save some portion of her husband’s declining years for herself— far away from the demands of war and politics. As for Winston, he is haunted by a strange vision and a hit song from the early 1920s: “I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles.” What could it mean?

M
arking the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., this program tells the rarely told stories of the attack that took place at the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, in which 184 people died. As most of the media coverage of the events of September 11 focused on New York City and United Flight 93, details of the attack that took place at the Pentagon have rarely been heard publicly, until now.

As a leader in educational media for children and students and a key partner with parents and educators across America, PBS brings us SPOTLIGHT EDUCATION, a special week of primetime programming examining the challenges facing today’s students and America’s education system.
