MTA—Subways and Buses
The City’s rail and bus system is run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and known as MTA New York City Transit. It operates 24 hours a day. How to purchase a MetroCard: You can get it at the subway stations from automated machines which accept cash, ATM bank cards and credit cards, or go to the booth and purchase it with cash. A single subway or bus ride is $2.75. An Express Bus ride costs $6. You can get an unlimited MetroCard for 7 days for $30. For the most up-to-date information on MetroCard prices, visit mta.info.
Subways
The easiest and quickest way to travel around NYC is by public subway train. Subway trains operate 24 hours a day. You can get a free subway map from the booth inside the station, any Official NYC Information Center or from http://web.mta.info/nyct/maps/subwaymap.pdf. Subway lines sometimes change routes or temporarily stop running—especially on weekends—so be sure to check for up-to-date MTA service information at mta.info or by calling 718-330-1234.
Buses
You can use your MetroCard or pay with exact coin change. Make sure to check if it serves all stops or only “limited” stops. You can pay at the front of the bus.
