Bites at a premium for Gillingham AA

Sixth Gillingham AA Winter Championship (18 pegs)

The final match in this popular series was fished on a reasonably good-looking river but bites were always going to be a premium after some sub-zero temperatures in the week. Despite this there were a few double figure bags of fish with mainly chub featuring in the weights. Winner on the day was Adie West who drew peg 61 at Fifehead Hill and caught 10 chub on the lead and bread to weigh 23-00. Runner up was Jason Mills who was blanking for two-and-a-half hours before catching eight chub on the maggot feeder for 17-05 from peg 56, dead man’s hole. Jeff pips Simon to the post at Colber

Sturminster and Hinton Angling Association

Nine anglers fished the final Winter Points Match on the River Stour at Colber on a quiet but cold, overcast Sunday on January 23. The water had cleared and there were some better weights than had previously been seen on this stretch. In general, everyone was fishing worm, maggot and pinkie over ground bait for a variety of fish with perch and roach being found by the majority. Top was Simon Dennis who was pegged between the bridges and found some good quality perch for a net of 17lb 4oz which included several around the 2lb mark on worm. Second was Dean Walters on the first swim above the White Footbridge with 11lb 4oz and third was Jamie Stone with 8lb 9oz from below the old railway bridge. After a very strong campaign, Jeff Sibley could only finish sixth but it was enough for him to pip Simon to the trophy. They both had 365 points but Jeff’s places in the frame (one first and two seconds) put him above Simon on countback. Although the matches for trophies are now compete, Sturminster and Hinton Angling Association hope to continue each Sunday whilst the weather holds good after two flood hit seasons that have ruled out most of our club competitions.
