Wincanton FC Needs your help Wincanton FC are appealing for help as flooding threatens to wreck their season and the future of the club. The ‘Wasps’ are in danger of losing their status as a Toolstation League Club due to poor drainage of the pitch making it unplayable. With their own playing surface out of action, games are currently having to be played at Gillingham Town FC, which has resulted in the loss of income from home games as well as the cost of hiring Gillingham’s facilities. Failure to cure the problem could result in expulsion from the league and the loss of the football club. Despite the ongoing problem, the team currently sit 3rd in the league on a run of 23 games unbeaten, with a strong chance of promotion. Wincanton FC have a proud local history which stretches back over 132 years. The club came through both World Wars, has seen their pitch invaded by livestock, has united families as successive generations followed in their father’s footsteps. They have celebrated promotions and the anguish of relegation, but the current crisis is perhaps the biggest threat Wincanton has faced. The club is totally run by

volunteers and despite the high level the team are playing at, in contrast to many of the teams they’re currently competing against, there are no paid players. A measure of the players’ commitment and WFC’s drive to succeed. Club officials (also all volunteers) have announced that the cost of curing the drainage problem to prevent the continual flooding, is a net busting £51,812.00. While this sum wouldn’t even represent a bump in the pitch for the vast spending power of Premier League giants at the top of the footballing pyramid, for a grassroots team like Wincanton it is now ‘Fergie time’ which has triggered an appeal to local companies and supporters to help them raise the eye-watering figure. Can you help? Companies and individuals that who may be willing to contribute and keep the club’s hopes of survival alive and kicking can contact first team manager, Chris Wise on 0787 2971943. Or email club secretary Steven D’Arcy, steven.darcy@ outlook.com to help ensure that in Wincanton, football is still coming home next season.
