Friends of The Yeatman Hospital fun run

Friends of The Yeatman Hospital are inviting fun runners to take part in this year’s Communifit Run on March 13, 2022 with a medal for every finisher. Craig Hardaker, the Director of Communifit, said: “Our March 5k and 10k, is a run (or walk!) for all ages and abilities, and once more we will be raising funds and awareness for The Friends of the Yeatman Hospital. Every finisher will receive a fantastic medal to celebrate their achievement, as a memory of a successful event and to know they raised funds for a great charity. “We donate half the profits to the Friends, whilst the rest goes towards operational costs.” The organisers have also put a call out for marshals to help at what they hope will be a great day for runners of all ages, experience and ability. “The route remains the same throughout the year,” said Mr Hardaker, “So entrants can start training at any time in order to both familiarise themselves with the course and aim for an improved time. “We have raised over £11k for local charities in the area and we are delighted to be supporting the friends once more. “If anyone would like to help marshal we would be grateful to hear from you!” Full details on how to register, the route and timings of this year’s Communifit Run can be found on the website; https:// www.communifit.co.uk/ event_listing_type/charityrun/ Friends of the Yeatman is a registered charity and you can find more details online at; https://friendsoftheyeatman. org.uk

North Dorset Men win

North Dorset Men 63 – 0 Puddletown

North Dorset welcomed Puddletown to Slaughtergate on Saturday, February 26, and started the game with a flourish leading to a converted try from Jake Cannings, swiftly followed by an unconverted one from Dave (Sticky) Stickland. North Dorset had set their stall out early and continued in that vein at a high pace, scoring 10 tries in all. Dorset’s powerful pack again proved too much for their opposition and there were several dominating scrums. Puddletown launched a series of strong attacks in the second half but were unable to breach a wellorganised Dorset defence, spurring the home side on to the try of the match with the ball passing through eight pairs of hands to finally be touched down by Adam Geal. The final score was 63-0 but despite this Puddletown ran themselves into the ground, however the power and pace of North Dorset proved too much for them. North Dorset put in a fine all round performance and in the clubhouse later, Dave Stickland was awarded the G Ritchie Player of the Match.

High flying skier is double olympian

Shaftesbury freestyle skier Lloyd Wallace became a two-time Olympian last week competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics in the aerials discipline. The former Port Regis and Kings Bruton pupil celebrated his 27th birthday in the Olympic Village two days before his event. He scored 108 points in the first round placing him 21st overall while setting a new British record. The aerials event, sees skiers shoot off a 4m high jump and perform triple somersaults like the winter equivalent of high diving but with a steep snowy landing. The event was won by Qi Guangpu of China with 129 points. “It was an amazing experience and I am incredibly proud to have represented TeamGB again. I took two years off competing after the 2018 Pyeongchang Games to return to University of Bath and complete a master’s degree, but I knew I had more to go with my potential in freestyle

skiing. It was very difficult to qualify for these Games, only the top 25 in the world get a place. “Also the difficulties of travelling in a covid world, plus I have been self-funding throughout, working as a sports agent to other Olympians and Paralympians. So it was a huge relief to be able to get through and do my absolute best - the two jumps I performed were the best I have ever done them, so all the work and training and effort was totally worthwhile.” “I have to accept that we are not an alpine nation and I’ve been very lucky that I’ve been able to travel and train with the Swiss team who have taken me into their programme. Just getting the respect of those teams is reward enough.” Lloyd is back in Shaftesbury for a few days before heading off for the final World Cups of the season in Russia in early March.
