Retirement housing manager gives residents’ spirits a big lift By Karen Bate ‘An angel in disguise’ has come to the rescue of the older and frail residents living in Homecanton House in Wincanton after a faulty lift has left many ‘marooned’ or struggling with the flight of stairs. The lift broke down several days before Christmas and is not expected to be repaired until a circuit board arrives from Spain. Among the residents trapped, one is 100 years old and several struggle with health conditions which make navigating the staircase ‘extremely tricky’. However, while the broken lift is an annoyance, the manager of Homecanton, Fiona, has come to the rescue, helping residents with their laundry and shopping.

Resident Carol Willment got in touch with the New Blackmore Vale to describe Fiona ‘as an angel in disguise’. Carol said: “Us old folk in Homecanton House in Wincanton are well and truly blessed. Fiona is going above beyond and back again to help us. “Our lift is out of order, possibly until after the new year. The circuit board comes from Spain, which means some folk are well and truly marooned! “Fiona is doing our laundry and shopping and delivered our Christmas goodies to us that we received from Wincanton Town Council, carrying them over three floors. Well done to an angel in disguise. “I have asthma and arthritis, so I worry about my knees on the way
down and my breathing on the way up. I am 76, so I am one of the youngest and can get on with it, but others are older and more frail. “We hope the lift is mended soon.” Chief operating officer for FirstPort, David Young, said: “We know that a broken lift at a retirement development can be particularly challenging, and whilst we await the spare part to be delivered, it’s great to hear that our onsite development manager, Fiona has been doing a fantastic job at helping residents. Our teams throughout the country strive to create a sense of community at our retirement developments and I commend Fiona for going the extra mile. We’re working with a contractor to have the lift repaired as soon as possible.”

Scheme for third solar park gets green light from officers By Karen Bate The planning application from Next Energy for a solar park south of Brains Farm near Wincanton has been unanimously approved and without objections by officers at South Somerset District Council. The solar farm at Moor Lane covers seven fields and is believed will generate enough renewable energy to power some 6,000 homes in the area. There are currently two solar farms near
Wincanton, one at Higher Halterleigh Farm the second at Sutor Farm, to the west of Moor Lane. A spokesperson from Next Energy said: “The proposed site takes up seven fields because there are existing woodland parcels taking up areas within these fields, which in turn breaks up and mitigates visual impact of the solar panels. “The proposed solar park is facing away from the viewpoints at Wincanton and Stoke Trister, only the coloured backs of the frames will be visible. More

mitigation will take place over the next five years by letting the hedgerows increase in size and height to 10 metres and more tree planting. No hedgerows or trees will be removed. “Some 40 acres of biodiversity land will be generated through the scheme, which would also be used for education. And enough power to supply 6,000 homes or help with future Business Park for Wincanton, supporting employment and electric powered car charging points. It will support the power
grid with much need power.” No long distance trenching will be needed for the farm as the power network grid is adjacent and overhead. He added that the solar farm was ‘a short term temporary planning to fix a power shortage until such time new technology comes along’. Next Energy have put in place a community benefit fund and engaged with Wincanton Town Council to discuss how this could benefit the local community.

Care home cuts for charity Residents of Whitecliffe House in Blandford didn’t need to be asked twice to become wannabe stylists and help staff member Emma Foxley lose her locks to donate to The Little Princess Trust. Emma allowed the residents, under the guidance of the home’s hairdresser Shanna Corben, to cut her 29.6-inch length hair in her first haircut for three years. Lois Ramsden said: “It didn’t take us long to get stuck in and it was a lot of fun, perhaps not so much for Emma but certainly for the rest of us.” The Little Princess Trust provides free, real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment and other medical conditions. Emma, who has worked for Colten Care for nearly seven years, is currently six months pregnant and early on in her pregnancy she experienced the heartbreak of her mum passing away. Emma said: “I wanted to help put a big smile on the face of someone who needs my locks more than I do.” Debbie Easter, Companionship Team leader at Whitecliffe House, said: “We wanted to do everything we could to support her initiative in aid of the Trust. While of course donating your own hair is a serious move, it was a joy to see residents having fun as they got involved in helping Emma.”

A vital lifeline for the vulnerable To the wealthy city dweller, the unspoilt Blackmore Vale, with its charming, quintessential English villages, is the perfect spot to re-locate or set up a second home. But scratch the surface of the area’s bucolic beauty, and there are signs that many existing residents not only experience financial hardship but extreme isolation. A 2019 Dorset Council report, the State of Dorset: Deprivation, revealed 46 per cent of Dorset’s population live in rural communities considered to be deprived in terms of barriers to housing and essential services. Older people are particularly vulnerable where they face the challenge of accessing transport for essential health and care services, even to shop for essentials. Some 21 neighbourhoods
in Dorset were among 66 nationally, which fell in the 20 per cent most deprived. One in five Dorset households are vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness, which is classed as a serious public health issue for older people. The Friends of Stour Connect in Sturminster Newton, is one charity that has worked tirelessly to deliver a hot meal to these older people, some living in remote hamlets in the vale. Their only face-to-face contact that day might well be the volunteer delivering the food. Chairperson Andy Watson said: “Our average customer is a person or couple living on their own without the ability to cook or microwave food for themselves or at risk when cooking for
themselves, and are therefore not suitable for foodbanks. We’re not just there to hand over a meal five days a week, but to check in with each beneficiary. And to contact a family member if there’s a problem. “We see a huge level of loneliness and social deprivation continuing since the end of the last lock down in July.” There are gaps in provision, as no meals go out at weekends. This can leave an older person stranded. One man was taken to hospital after a fall, leaving his wife without food or access to the shops until the lunch arrived on the Monday. A car needing repair, an older person unable to drive or to afford to run a car creates further social deprivation. The charity need volunteer
drivers to help and without them the scheme could stop altogether. Currently Stour Connect works with NORDCAT, who assist with meals, but they too are struggling to find drivers. Trustee Tracey Chick said: “We know there are vulnerable people out there who still need support, and whilst our numbers are increasing we know we are barely scratching the surface of need.” With the help of statutory and voluntary organisations, families and neighbours it should be possible to find them. Please book in advance on 01747 852256 or shaftesburylibrary@ dorsetcouncil.gov.uk. n Carpe Diem, seize the day: Have you ever thought of doing this? Well, that is certainly what the speaker at the next Blackmore Vale u3a meeting has done.
Lyricist Miranda Pender overcame a life-threatening illness and in her early 50s, changed her life and changed direction into music. At 52 Miranda learnt the guitar and started writing and singing her own songs so she has more than compensated for the late start! Come and listen to her raunchy, romantic, poignant, humorous songs. The subjects of which range from shipwrecks to stalkers; from the perils of punting to that awkward situation where you discover your lover’s name sewn into the back of his underpants! The meeting is at Henstridge Village Hall on January 11 at 2.15pm n The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wincanton is hosting a coffee morning on
Saturday, January 8 between 10am and noon. There will be gifts, cake, books and a raffle. Everyone is welcome. n According to its organisers, Café Sci, at The Market House, Castle Cary, is a place where, in an informal café-style setting, there are free monthly talks and debates about the latest thinking in science and technology from researchers and experts. 11 January: Deep Purple: Algal Blooms are melting the Greenland Ice Sheet It is often said that wherever there is water on earth there will be life of some sort. Ice sheets are no different. The Deep Purple Project is examining why purple-coloured algae are growing on the surface of the Greenland Ice sheet.
There are often so many of them that they make the ice look like soot has been thrown over it. They bloom each year down the western margin of the ice sheet, increasing the amount of melt that occurs each summer. Two of the big questions we are trying to answer is how much extra melting do they cause, and will the ice sheet darken over bigger areas in the future as the climate warms and more of the ice sheet melts. Martyn Tranter, Professor of Polar Biochemistry, Joe Cook, Senior Researcher and Ian Stevens , Post Doctoral Researcher, Deep Purple Project, Aarhus university. The Sturminster Newton Heritage Trust is hosting a talk by Dr Richard Hobbs, Weston curator of Roman Britain, British Museum on Wednesday, February 9 in the Stour Hall in the Exchange in Sturminster Newton at 7.30pm. New Archaeological Fieldwork at Hinton St Mary; the Mosaic in Context will present results of the recent archaeological evaluation season conducted at the site of the mosaic discovered at Hinton St Mary in the 1960s. After the mosaic was discovered in 1963, subsequent excavations by Dr Kenneth Painter of the British Museum suggested that the mosaic belonged to a late Roman villa, probably of courtyard style. But Painter was not entirely convinced that the mosaic belonged to such a building complex and a more recent geophysical survey has also failed to resolve the problem. New excavations, led once again by the British Museum, aim to shed more light on why the famous mosaic was laid. Tickets will £11 on the door, or £10 in advance from The Exchange, Sturminster Newton 01258 475137 out by the German Das Reich SS Panzer Division during its move from southern France to the Normandy battlefield shortly after D-Day in June 1944. Over £3.5k raised in Dorset and Somerset Vintage car enthusiast, Paul Fahie, took to the road in his favourite vintage 1926 Morris Cowley to thank Blood Bike group, the Yeovil FreeWheelers, for their support to the NHS and to help raise much needed funds to keep the FreeWheelers on the road. Paul needs frequent blood transfusions, or ‘oil changes’ as he refers to them in order to stay alive. As these transfusions increase in frequency, he has become more and more aware of the vital role the volunteer Blood Bikers play in helping the NHS. During his six-day drive
around Somerset and Dorset, Paul also visited many of the hospitals served by the FreeWheelers, including Dorchester County Hospital. Accompanied by a fully equipped support vehicle and BloodBike outriders, starting early each morning, and in the bitter cold, they all simply gritted their teeth and got through it. Receiving a great reception wherever they went, they raised over £3,500. “These people are the unsung heroes of the NHS,” said Paul. “Every one of them is a volunteer, giving their time completely free of charge, 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, 365 days a year. And without them, people like me would struggle to get the support we need. I simply want to do what I can to make sure they receive the thanks they deserve and the funds they need to keep doing what they do.” Tony Coulston from the Yeovil FreeWheelers said of Paul’s efforts, “It was amazing. It went really well. Last year he drove his car 50 miles, this time he drove over 140 miles in just six
days! “Paul’s courageous efforts were absolutely fantastic. I can’t thank him enough. He’s a very ill man, and starting so early and driving all day, that was amazing. We did have back up drivers but didn’t need them, he’s very stoic, it was a seriously impressive effort. “He raised awareness of what we do significantly, we’re all very impressed and hugely grateful for all he’s done.” Yeovil FreeWheelers is

HOW IT LOOKS NOW: The old Wyke Brewery today
By Kate Knowles
One of the most imposing buildings in Gillingham is the old Wyke Brewery building, originally built in the early 1800s in Italianate style for Matthews and Co to provide ale for its chain of public houses. The Matthews family owned many of the public houses in Gillingham and the wider area. At its peak under the Mathews family the brewery employed 21 staff.

Brewing ceased in 1963 when the business was bought by Hall and Woodhouse and they rented out the premises to Skona who increased the number of employees to 25. Skona ceased trading in the 1970s and the building remained unused until 1988 when it was converted into flats. Mrs Sam Jeffery, 73, has lived in the building for over three years and adores it. “As soon as you walk

in, it takes your breath away. There are beams, two terraces, round attic windows, I have views to the east, south and west. It’s so pretty” The grain hoist remains a remarkable feature of the building. Currently the cantilever which supports the grain hoist is undergoing repairs. Mrs Jeffery said: ‘It’s just outside my window, at the moment it’s a little bit scary and a little bit chilly, but it

is stunning. I don’t mind the current chill as I’m of the generation that was told to put on a jumper or at the very least a vest. “A plumber came in and was in raptures; his mother had brought him here when he was four years old when she came to talk to Mrs Matthews.” Mrs Jeffery is very keen to find out more of the history of this local building and to share this with the wider Gillingham community.

Blandford Lions and Stour Rotary donated £700 worth of Matos meat vouchers, and the Lions also presented a 32inch TV and DVD player just before Christmas for a raffle to raise funds for the charity at the Crown Hotel. Town councillors have agreed in principle to the setting up of a service level agreement providing funding for the charity over a number of years, subject to further discussions and receipt of further details. Earlier
discussions encountered a stumbling block in that the council seeks to appoint a representative to the managing board of organisations in receipt of such an agreement, and the Food Bank, part of Faithworks Wessex, required any such representative to be a practising Christian. At meetings in December Food Bank manager Gail del Pinto described work the organisation undertook in addition to providing an increasing number of food parcels, including support for improved IT skills with the provision of reconditioned laptops, and plans to establish a Pantry for Blandford. She advised that it was no longer a requirement for a council representative to have a faith commitment, and the council agreed to consider the application again in the New Year once supporting accounts and a business plan had been provided.

COHABITATION AND PROPERTY Margaret Baker, Partner / Head of Litigation and Family Law Unmarried couples have no automatic right to make a financial claim against each other. When a cohabiting couple split up, disputes can arise such as whether a property should be sold, who should pay the mortgage and what share each party is entitled to. Must we sell? You could agree that the person remaining will buy out the other party, otherwise the property will need to be sold. If one party refuses, then the other party can ask the court to make an order for sale. What am I entitled to? There is no right to ask for a larger share of the sale proceeds because one party is in a financially weaker position. The split of the sale proceeds depends on the way in which the property is held. If it is owned as tenants in common, then each party will own a specified share. If the property is held as joint tenants, you can assume that the proceeds of the sale will be split equally. I paid more when we bought. If you paid more initially , you are likely to want to claim a larger share of the sale proceeds. The court cannot vary the way in which a property is held.
Under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996, also referred to as ToLATA, the court can make decisions as to who has the right to occupy the property and the extent of each party’s ownership. It can also order that the property be sold. A ToLATA claim is complicated and it is recommended to try to resolve matters by negotiation or possibly by alternative dispute resolution or mediation. The Court may be unwilling to order a sale of the property where there are children remaining in the home with one parent. That parent may be able to stay in the home with the children until the youngest child is 18. This can apply even if the property is owned by the parent who has left. In that case advice from a solicitor would be essential. Contact our family law solicitors Our family law team can advise on property rights and options of unmarried couples. School’s Chicago a smash Students from The Gryphon School in Sherborne delivered fantastic performances of Chicago with audiences saying it was ‘absolutely amazing!’ and that they were ‘blown away by how professional it was’. of Drama, Holly Young, said: “The show was an excellent example of Gryphon students’ outstanding performance skills, as well as teamwork to ensure the production was a success. “The standard of performance was exceptional, and I am extremely proud of everyone involved.”
Headteacher Nicki Edwards said: “The opportunity to take part in fantastic events such as this means that the students have wonderful memories of their school days that will last a lifetime. The teamwork, commitment, talent and enthusiasm of the students shone out in their broad smiles and incredible performances.”
Life jail term for hotelier’s murder Thomas Schreiber has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering Sir Richard Sutton and attempting to murder his mother, Anne Schreiber at their Moorhill estate in Gillingham on the evening of April 7. Following four hours and 51 minutes of deliberations at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, December 17, the jury found him guilty of both charges by a majority of 11 to one. Sir Richard, 83, who owned a string o f hotels, was pronounced dead at the scene and Ms Schreiber, 65, was airlifted to hospital with multiple stab wounds. She has been left with severe and life-changing injuries as a result of the attack. Anne Schreiber’s daughters Louisa Schreiber and Rose McCarthy issued a statement following the sentencing. They said: ‘There is little peace to be found in Friday’s verdict and today’s sentencing. We respectfully ask for privacy going forward as we grieve for Richard, and come to terms with all that we have lost.’

Fleet Air Arm surprise Santa visit
Children at Charlton Horethorne were stunned and delighted when Santa dropped in by helicopter to deliver presents. Children and school staff
set off on what the children thought was a welly walk only to be surprised in a nearby field when a Merlin helicopter landed, and out popped Santa bringing
presents for every child. He then took off to return to the North Pole to continue his Christmas preparations. Headteacher Phil Sales said: “A big thank you to the Fleet
Air Arm (and Santa!) for making this possible and putting smiles on all the children’s faces. It was very exciting, and a brilliant end to their party day!”

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney, and do you need one? If you need somebody to rely on in later years, perhaps to take over making decisions on your behalf, that person will need your formal written authority. This authority is given by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents that, when registered, mean you have given another person legal power to deal with financial decisions for you, or medical and welfare decisions. At Winterborne Legal Services we can help you to put suitable protection in place in your Lasting Power of Attorney, so that you can be comfortable giving power to your children. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney can be a big leap of faith for you, if you have any questions we are ready to help. Please call us on 07860 772274 or email christine@winterbornelegal.co.uk

No Fault Divorce – What is Changing? It has been widely reported in the media that no fault divorce will change the landscape of getting divorced in this country, but what does that mean? Lesley Powell of Battens Solicitors investigates. Currently in England and Wales, you have to prove that your relationship has irretrievably broken down, based on a number of factors, the most common of which are adultery or unreasonable behaviour, in order to petition for divorce. You must provide reasons as to what behaviour was unreasonable. In situations where couples have “fallen out of love” this can cause a high degree of animosity picking apart a relationship for reasons that are needed for a form. The changes mean that parties will now be able to make a joint application for a divorce preventing assigning blame in a situation where there is none.
Terminology
The language around divorce is also going to change. It will no longer be a petition, but an application, and the person who applies, will be an applicant. There will also no longer be a decree nisi and a decree absolute, but instead a conditional order and a final order respectively. These language changes are done with an aim
of neutralising the language used and bringing it in line with other family proceedings..
Applications
No evidence will be required for the irretrievable breakdown of the relationship, just a signed statement that the relationship has broken down. In a joint application, this will be unchallengeable, as you will have both agreed that the marriage has broken down. The ability to defend a no fault application will also be removed, and replaced with the ability to contest only on very limited grounds: Jurisdiction The marriage did not exist Fraud Lack of procedural compliance This allows for cases where there are true issues of law that could impact the validity of a divorce to be dealt with appropriately. Cross applying, where both parties independently apply for a divorce, will also be removed and in instances where two applications are made, the divorce will become disputed instead, as it will be assumed the parties do not agree.
Timescales
The legislation is further introducing new timelines, with a 20 week window to permit reflection after issue of proceedings and before the conditional order can be made.
This allows for a chance for reconciliation, but also a chance for agreement of practical arrangements for the future. The period between the new conditional order being issued, and the ability to apply for a final order (previously the decree absolute) will remain at 6 weeks.
What next?
Seeking legal advice on the breakdown of a relationship is always advised, especially in situations where there are children or joint property. A solicitor can highlight issues that you may not have noticed and support you with communication between you and your partner at this difficult time.
Lasting Powers Battens Solicitors The times that we are currently living in have shown that life can change completely overnight and the future can look uncertain. The best way of dealing with this uncertainty is to ensure that all your personal planning is in place. There are two pillars to this planning – the first is executing a Lasting Power of Attorney so that your family can help you if you become ill or mentally incapacitated and the second is making your Will to ensure your estate passes to those who you wish to benefit on your death.

Author’s talk on The Voice of Doom
BLUE PLAQUE: Author Paul Hooley at the unveling of the plaque in honour of Wolfe Frank in Mere earlier this year
By Karen Bate newsdesk@ blackmorevale.net
Author Paul Hooley MBE is giving history lovers the unique opportunity to learn more about ‘Nuremberg’s Voice of Doom’ at his Zoom talk on January 17. Pen & Sword’s publication of Nuremberg’s Voice of Doom and The Undercover Nazi Hunter, resulted in a Blue Plaque in honour of (Hugh) Wolfe Frank, who is now widely accepted as
having been ‘a wrongfully forgotten hero of the twentieth century’ and one of its bravest and most charismatic characters. Both books are based upon Frank’s memoirs, which had remained hidden in a Gillingham attic for more than a quarter of a century, following his death in 1988. The plaque, conferred by Salisbury Civic Society, has been mounted upon the façade of his former home The Malt House, Castle Street in the neighbouring

He has been a director of a building society and a private hospital, and companies involved in advertising, publishing, entertainment, finance, building, transport, property and engineering. He retired from business in 1990 since when he has devoted much of his time to studying, writing and lecturing on a wide range of historical and military subjects. He was appointed MBE in 2003.

Those interested in the Wolfe Frank story are invited to join author Paul Hooley for the talk, and a Q&A session on Zoom at 6pm, which will outline Frank’s astonishing life, his achievements and provide details of the outstanding service he gave to Britain and the free world, in his personal crusade against the Nazis prior to, during and following the Second World War. who condemned Nazis to their death Son of a Jewish industrialist, Wolfe Frank, became the Chief Interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials where, following his pronouncements of the death sentences imposed upon Nazi war criminals, the world’s media dubbed him ‘The Voice of Doom’. Frank was also the leading pioneer of the simultaneous interpretation process and an intrepid investigative reporter. These achievements added to his good looks, intelligence service involvements, maverick tendencies, charismatic character and colourful private life (he was married five times and had countless affairs) have led many to see Frank as having been a real-life version of James Bond. A pre-war playboy turned resistance worker Frank fled his native Germany for England in 1937 having been branded ‘an enemy of the state – to be shot on sight’. Initially interned as an ‘enemy alien’, he later joined the British Army, where he rose to the rank of Captain. Unable to speak English when he arrived by the time of the trials he was considered to be the finest interpreter in the world. Described as ‘the greatest trial in history’ and the ‘last battle of the Second World War’ the undoubted success of Nuremberg owes much to Frank’s skills. As an interrogator he drew horrifying confessions out of some of the war criminals that later led to their convictions and

it was he who brought the final curtain down on the Third Reich with his pronouncements of the sentences imposed
upon some of the most evil men in history – including Hermann Goering, Commander of the Luftwaffe, Hitler’s
designated deputy and architect of the Holocaust who was the first of the war criminals to learn from Frank that his fate was to be ‘death by the rope’. Following his service at Nuremberg, Frank became increasingly alarmed at the misinformation coming out of Germany. In 1949, backed by the New York Herald Tribune and to the knowledge of USA military and intelligence services, he once again risked his life by returning to the country of his birth to make an ‘undercover’ survey of the main facets of post-war German life and viewpoints. During his enterprise he worked as a German alongside Germans in factories, on the docks, in a refugee camp and elsewhere. Equipped with false papers he sought objective answers to many questions concerning refugees, anti-Semitism, morality, de-Nazification, religion, and nationalism. This led to the publication of a highly acclaimed series of articles that appeared in the NYHT under the generic title ‘Hangover After Hitler’. Of great importance, and having been set the task of finding out what had happened to over 2,000 ‘missing’ war criminals, Frank single-handedly tracked down, arrested, interrogated and took the confession of one of the most highly ranked Nazi Generals on the Allies ‘Most Wanted’ list before handing the captured officer over to the Admiralty.

Looking back at the Vale’s evolution
Why not start the New Year by delving into the past of the beautiful Blackmore Vale? Author Philip Knott is staging a phenomenal exhibition in The Exchange at Sturminster Newton where he will showcase some 1,800 historical photographs he has collected over 22 years. And these photographs are just a teeny tiny example of what will be on display at The Blackmore Vale Now and Then exhibition. Philip and his pictures will provide a fascinating insight into life in the vale during the 20th Century and will help residents to understand, and appreciate, how the vale has evolved into the landscape that we can all enjoy today.

modern farming methods, the rural landscape of the vale remains remarkably well preserved. An overview from the chalk hills or a walk along the banks of the River Stour or through the meadows
at Colber where Philip’s great-grandfather Tom made hay and grazed his cattle during the early part of the 20th Century, will reveal a landscape that has not changed dramatically since the days of Thomas Hardy and William Barnes. The exhibition will be split into five categories, Evolution of the Vale. Along the Dorset Stour (from source to Blandford), Tributaries of the Stour in the Blackmore Vale, Peripheral Towns and Villages and Everyday Life in the Vale. There will be some 13 sub categories, covering every town and village in and around the vale. The exhibition is on for three days between January 6 and 8, between 9am and 5pm.

Minor injuries units to close ‘temporarily’ By Karen Bate The minor injuries unit at the Yeatman Hospital in Sherborne has ‘temporarily’ closed less than six months after it re-opened in the summer. Dorset HealthCare is temporarily closing its MIUs in Blandford, Portland and Sherborne because of ‘existing staffing difficulties made considerably more challenging by covid-19 related absences’. Residents in Sherborne and the surrounding villages, a catchment area with a population of as many as 22,500, who need medical treatment for minor injuries, which include head and eye injuries, burns and scalds and injuries to the back, shoulder and chest, are being advised to ring 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk.
Jane Elson, Dorset HealthCare’s Service Director for Integrated Community Services, said: “This is a temporary change and an essential one. As we continue to respond to the pandemic these changes will help us manage the current impacts of covid-19 while still providing good access to MIU services across the county. We have thought carefully about these changes and they are being made in line with where we are seeing the greatest and the least demand for these services. “It is not a decision we have taken lightly. At the forefront of this change are our patients and communities. We need to ensure we can provide a safe, reliable and robust
service for people who need urgent care and treatment. “We thank everyone for their understanding and co-operation at this challenging time.” Staff from the temporarily closed units will help support the MIUs at Shaftesbury and Wimborne hospitals, which will have extended opening hours of 8am-8pm, Monday-Sunday. Bridport and Swanage MIUs, as well as the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) based at Weymouth Hospital, will continue operating as usual. These changes to the MIU at the Yeatman Hospital will be reviewed at the end of March 2022. The MIU at the Yeatman Hospital closed in April 2020 during the early
weeks of lockdown, a decision taken by Dorset Health Care Trust to manage the impact of covid-19. A campaign was launched by The Friends of Yeatman Hospital, with resounding support from the Sherborne community, the town’s GPs, Sherborne Town Council along with the Chamber of Trade and Chris Loder MP, who stated the case to reopen the MIU. Chris sought assurance from the former Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock in the House of Commons on November 17, 2020 that the MIU will re-open as soon as possible. Further details about the MIUs and Weymouth’s UTC, are available at dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/miu
Choir founder’s efforts recognised with a BEM By Karen Bate A Milborne Port musician has been recognised for his efforts and achievements in a year which has been like no other. Mark Strachan has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to musicians after forming the Choir of the Earth in March 2020, to offer music lovers across the globe an outlet during lockdown and learn the entire Messiah online. Mark said: “We expected 20 people locally to join, but instead had 3,600 people join from over the world including USA, Canada, Thailand, New Zealand and Singapore.” With Musical Director Ben England
blackmorevale.net
the choir initially worked towards a performance of Handel’s Messiah with 3,600 voices, four professional soloists, and a nine-strong baroque orchestra, who recorded their parts in isolation along with separate Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass rehearsals. Using broadcast streaming technology via YouTube, so thousands can join simultaneously, a live performance was broadcast on Sunday May 31, 2020. Within its first year, the Choir of the Earth ran 30 courses, covering a wide range of classical and contemporary choral works. Mark said: “At the end of a course, we ask the choir to record their own voice on their mobile phone. We combine all voices in the recording studio to create the choir and this is played back to the choir in an online concert.” Barbara from the US said: “I am an average singer who thought she had lost her voice following an extreme bout of influenza in 2017. Choir of the Earth has helped me learn to sing again.
It enlarged my singing world, giving me an opportunity to sing pieces I never imagined I could, and become friends across the world I didn’t know existed before last year. Kind, loving, wonderful people. I bless you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for renewing my voice and my soul and widening my world.” The choir is now offering Mozart’s Mass in C Minor. MPs’ round-up
The importance of friends and family These continue to be difficult times for all. If 2020 was a year of initial pandemic shock, then 2021 has been a year of both vaccines and uncertainty. Our success in producing vaccines in a record-breaking time and the commitment of all those responsible for the rollout, including councils, the NHS, volunteers and an army of others has been nothing short of astonishing and is, I hope, our ticket to return to some sort of normality in this New Year. Like many others, I very much hope that the New Year will not see a return of restrictions on our freedoms. We must learn how to live with this virus in exactly the way we have done with all other viruses throughout history. As I
Somerton & Frome MP David Warburton write, the air hangs heavy with talk of a possible New Year lockdown, despite the memory of another year of uncertainty and fragility lying behind us. Booster jabs and warnings to limit our social interaction to limit the spread of the latest variant of the marching virus, all conspired to try and rob us of the special moment at Christmas and the end of the year when we would normally show our friendship
and love for others and thank them for their support throughout the year. Because, if anything reminds us of the importance of friends and family and the bonds that connect us, it’s the Christmas and New Year period, when we all want to be together. So I can only hope that 2022 brings in a different perspective. A new way to exist alongside the creeping virus without it forcing us to stretch those ligaments that join us together to breaking point. This year will also see the Local Elections in May – the first in which we can choose who to represent us in a new Unitary Authority spanning the county. I very much hope we see a good turnout and I look forward to hitting the streets to campaign
for our superb prospective councillors. In itself, this represents a new beginning in the same way we adjust our way of lives to live with covid. I hope we find that way forward, and I do look forward with hope and ambition to this New Year. I’ll certainly do everything possible to keep alive our values – of industry, kindness and common sense – both in Westminster and here in Somerset. There is much to do, and many new challenges to face. Like you, I’ll be energetic, determined and persistent in facing these and helping to bring us together once more in exactly the way the Christmas we’ve just enjoyed reminds us to do. And I wish you a wonderful 2022.
The bonus though, because omicron is so transmissible, the Delta variant appears to have been driven down and our doctors and nurses are treating a much milder virus. The UK Health Security Agency published a report last week that shows, there are c8,000 people in hospital who have covid. However, only 29 per cent are being treated for covid, so of the 8,000 in hospital with covid, it means that 5,680 are actually in hospital for another reason. The real difficulty that is being faced here with our hospitals at the moment is that there are a considerable number of staff off work with covid and there is a considerable difficulty with social care provision to enable people to go
home once they have been in hospital, which is why we are seeing hospital bed occupancy at very high levels of c98 per cent. I’m very sorry to say that the NHS is having to close the Minor Injuries Unit again at the Yeatman Hospital because of staff availability pressures. I hope, not for long especially given the underwhelming 111 service provision. However, we have made real progress with getting our vaccine boosters available with more walk-in centres all over West Dorset which is really making a difference, so no one should have to wait very long nor have to travel far for a booster now. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year.
More vaccine clinics making a difference
Christmas-tide has been a calm but enjoyable one for me, mostly at home, peppered with a number of organ-playing stints at church services around Sherborne, along with one or two social occasions. I was very pleased that after a lot of hard work on the part of church members and my fellow churchwarden Martin Richards, Bishops Caundle Parish Church re-opened its doors to the parish on Christmas morning with a good congregation too. I’m delighted that we have been able to re-open it. MP for West Dorset Chris Loder lockdowns. We should be considering all impacts of restrictions, not just the health impacts. Whilst there was a huge concern before Christmas about Omicron, that concern has not become reality, thankfully. Mainly, because most people have been sensible and taken responsibility for themselves. But also because the Omicron symptoms, in general, are very mild compared to other variants.

Politics
Labour acted responsibly in the national interest From Greg Williams on behalf of the Labour Party, Dorset Covid ‘passports’ are the latest issue to divide British politics – and divide some parties. Some of our MPs oppose the measure for being reminiscent of 1930s Germany. They tell us it heralds a slide towards an authoritarian, big government state. Firstly, enough with these comparisons to Nazi Germany. For a generation who never witnessed let alone endured that regime to misappropriate it is utterly disrespectful to the memory of those who did. Everyone in politics should cut back on the histrionics.
Let’s be clear. We’re talking about an app on your phone that shows you have participated in a crucial public health initiative before joining an optional, mass social activity. And you have the choice whether to get vaccinated or get tested. Opposing these measures because someone showed you twitter photos of Italian police in a restaurant is ridiculous. If only the bobby on the door of Number 10 was so officious in enforcing Covid restrictions last Christmas. I’m proud that Keir Starmer and his MPs voted for these measures. He put party politics aside, and did what was required in the national interest. This is
what responsible, credible leadership looks like. What of the Conservatives, as they lurch to another by-election defeat to the liberals? Where is their anxiety over a slide towards illiberal authoritarianism in respect to legislation requiring voters to present ID before voting? Or their plans to give the ministers control over the Electoral Commission, and prevent it from investigating the Prime Minister and others for violations of electoral law? Where are the wails of discontent over limits to judicial review of the executive? If our MPs were truly concerned about protecting
liberties and the integrity of the British political system, they will use their newfound independence from their whips to reject these measures. We must hope British conservatism doesn’t morph into the extreme libertarian politics of the US, where reverence for ‘tradition’ and ‘constitution’ is selective. It is applied to protect politicians from scrutiny, and to disenfranchise select groups of voters. What we really need to be wary of is not an app on our phone, but those who believe they have a right to put their own ‘liberty’ above the health of others, and use the power of the state to silence those who oppose them.
Why Global Britain should find its humanity From Mike Chapman on behalf of Liberal Democrats across The Blackmore Vale In the autumn of 1972, I stood with my mother behind a trestle table in an open hangar at West Malling airfield in Kent. She was transformed by her WRVS uniform. We distributed shoes, raincoats, scarves and even umbrellas as cold weather necessities to the long line of Ugandan Asian refugees, just disembarked. The Government had first tried to resettle them in the UK’s overseas territories but met resistance from all but the Falklands. How graceless was Government then and how generous and organised the voluntary sector. Things do not seem to have changed much. The numbers are the same; there is the same “no way back” issue facing the migrants; there is the same bewildered but determined look on their faces. The supposedly toxic politics of all this is nothing like as toxic as the situations facing so many of them in Afghanistan, Syria, across
blackmorevale.net
Kurdistan and in the Horn of Africa. The core of policy towards refugees seems to be to treat them with minimal generosity, even hostility, “pour encourager les autres”. As we approach Christmas, perhaps it is time for this Global Britain to stop feeling quite so entitled, find its humanity and act with more confidence and compassion, embracing its historic responsibilities as it does so. Dorset has welcomed less than100 recent migrants. On a per capita basis the number should be nearer 600. Together with many others, I went up to North Shropshire to help canvass. I saw familiar things: a hinterland of great beauty and heritage disguising rural isolation and farmers uncertain of the future. I saw towns standing still, gaps in services, a powerlessness everywhere and the same gulf between prices and wages that we see across the Vale. I saw, too, a hard-working team fuelled by a belief that anything was possible. The rewards are there for all to see. The federal structure of our
party lends itself to such teamwork, working together toward a common goal rather than being told what to do by a remote hierarchy. We also try to take the long view through early selection of candidates for both local and parliamentary elections, a process we are starting now. As we reach the winter solstice, the year’s deep midnight, we are all concerned about the march of omicron. There is a simple truth that it will be more readily managed if we all do the right things: get vaccinated/boosted, mask up, get tested before events, closely socialise less. It will take good leadership, leadership by example not least, building on good science to overcome the anxiety, weariness and impatience so evident across our communities. What will not succeed is command, control and coercion. So, to Christmas and the New Year. The days are getting longer and the first bulbs are starting to show, adding to the other signs of change. Reasons to be cheerful.

Be wise, be guided by the star Today, Friday, 7 January, it is Christmas Day for Eastern Orthodox Christians. But in the Christian West we are nearly a fortnight ahead: yesterday was the Feast of the Epiphany. The difference is because the Orthodox use the Julian calendar, while the West uses the later, Gregorian, calendar. So now you know! Epiphany celebrates the coming of the Wise Men to worship the infant Jesus. A chartered accountant friend once showed me a cartoon in his professional journal. It was of the Wise Men presenting their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. One of them said to Mary and Joseph, “We wanted to bring cuddly toys, but our accountants advised substantial donations.” Nevertheless, these weren’t the first Epiphany gifts. That was a star. As the old carol puts it: Star of wonder, star of light Star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding Guide us to thy perfect light We often forget about the star, perhaps

because of a healthy scepticism about matters astrological. Yet it’s not the only reference to a star in the New Testament. In the last book of the Bible, the Revelation of St John the Divine, the Lord uses it of himself, “I am the bright and the morning star”. In other words, the Star to guide us is the Lord himself, made known in Jesus. When we put our trust in him, he is the kindly light who leads us on, and he never leads us astray. Of course, guidance based on trust can be harder to follow than the clear-cut directions provided by some creeds and philosophies. But we walk by faith, not by sight, and sometimes we only realise how carefully we have been guided by God when we look back and see how we have been led through the maze of life. Time and time again we discover the truth in these words, written about 1500 years ago by the Christian philosopher Boethius: “To see Thee is the End and the Beginning. Thou carriest me and

thou goest before. Thou art the Journey and the journey’s End.” Christ is our Morning Star, and he leads us on. Sometimes clouds get in the way, and we get horribly lost. Sometimes on our journey we get things wrong too. The Wise Men did. They arrived in Palestine asking the right question – “Where is the new-born King?” – but they asked the wrong people, who told King Herod who, as a result, had all the infant boys in the Bethlehem area put to the sword. But nevertheless, by following the star, the Wise Men found Jesus first, and their gifts were accepted. In Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night”, Feste the Jester sings “Journeys end in lovers’ meeting, every wise man’s son doth know.” You and I are called to be wise men’s sons and daughters, and like the Magi of old to follow the star. And one day when our journey through life comes to an end, there we shall meet him face to face. The journey will indeed end in lovers’ meeting. That is God’s promise.

Staff and pupils all superstars as school’s Nativity a success
Children and the teachers at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Marnhull were all superstars as they worked tirelessly so make sure their show was staged. Following the news of the ‘new variant’ it was decided during the final hours before the curtain went up, to film the show instead of hosting a live audience. Headteacher Mrs Betts felt that it would not be fair to put
College offering language course
Yeovil College is offering free, flexible, remote and workbased learning qualification in ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) from January. The programmes are perfect for employers who want to improve the English language skills of their staff, support staff to achieve a nationally recognised qualification and invest in continued professional development. From January, Yeovil College is offering the opportunity to deliver ESOL qualifications in the workplace on a weekly basis, completely free to the employer. The expert teaching team will travel to the workplace to deliver to both large and small groups. the children, parents and wider school community at risk by going ahead with a live performance. Mrs Betts said: “We are so proud of the children and their attitudes in what remains a difficult and uncertain time.”
£3,000 the target for books A group of dedicated supporters are gearing up to raise £3,000 for books for their local school, by cycling for 24 hours non-stop. St Gregory’s Primary School in Marnhull has launched its major fundraiser for 2022, called Bike4Books. MP Simon Hoare joined the Ladies of St Greg’s to launch the epic spin bike session from Marnhull to Rome, all in aid of books for the school. The main event is on January 20-21 and will include headteacher and event architect Debbie Field alongside teaching staff, parents, governors, the Reverend from St Greg’s, current pupils, ex-pupils and even the school guinea pigs Cookie and Cream – there’s
a 40-strong team of spinners from all walks of life. The children will be tracking the event and celebrating each of the cities the cyclists pass through; London-ParisPrague-Vienna-VeniceRome. Debbie said: “In order to raise the required £3,000, we will be working extremely hard not only spinning to Rome but also in publicising the event. “We have a webpage, stgregorymarnhull.dorset.sch. uk/bike4books for people to keep track of our preparation and importantly a link to our JustGiving page. This involves so many women of our village. What of the men I hear you cry? In charge of refreshments of course, this really is an event for all.”

Dumbing down can lead to confusion Can we please pass on our thanks to the whole team for bringing the magazine back to life. Well done everyone and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Best wishes Martin and June Hull By email
The Dorset Committee of the Army Benevolent Fund, the Soldiers’ Charity, would like to thank all those generous shoppers, who supported the Army Benevolent Fund, the Soldiers’ Charity, during our tin collection at Shaftesbury Tesco on Friday 17 December. We raised the impressive sum of £891.92. The Army Benevolent Fund is the Army’s national charity founded in 1944 aimed at giving a lifetime of support to serving soldiers, former soldiers and their immediate families in time of need. Col (retd) Christopher Price By email I would like to point out some misconceptions in Dr Colin Clark’s letter regarding the handling of the covid-19 pandemic. Computer models and the scientists who use them do not make “predictions” or “forecasts”. Rather they analyse what might happen under various scenarios based on a number of input parameters regarding how the virus and we might behave. The output for each scenario does not yield a single number, but a
32
range alongside varying probabilities for the numbers within that range as an indication of the uncertainties involved. As we learn more about the virus and how we behave in response to it, our confidence in the input parameters and hence the outputs increases. Confidence is further increased by not simply relying on one model, but a range of them. The power of modelling is that it allows scenarios involving different control measures to be rapidly tested to find which ones give the greatest protection without having to learn from bitter experience. The headline numbers referred to by Dr Clark are favoured by politicians and some sections of the media probably because they think it is necessary to simplify messages to the general public. I think this is a mistake possibly resulting from their own lack of scientific understanding. The more you dumb something down, the greater the risk that you give misleading information. The medic, Dr Ben Goldacre has written an excellent book on this topic aimed at the general public entitled ‘I think you’ll find it’s a bit more complicated than that’. The indirect damage to people’s health and the economy highlighted by Dr Clark is indeed awful, but no responsible government could have ignored its scientific experts and risked the NHS, which even in pre-pandemic times was running close to capacity, being overwhelmed such

I have just listened to Mr Johnson’s interview with Sam Coates of Sky News (17 December), during which the prime minister asserted, not for the first time, that the UK has more jobs than pre-pandemic, and the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe, by which I assume he means his favoured whipping boy, the EU. In relation to job numbers, a quick look at the Office for National Statistics’ website shows that there were 32,985,000 jobs (December 2019 to January 2020), and 32,506,000 - ie fewer during the August 2021 to October 2021 period (the most up to date numbers available). As to vaccination numbers, the Financial Times’ website illustrates that while, as is well known, the UK’s initial vaccination rate was impressive, current facts and best estimates suggest that Portugal and Iceland are ahead of the UK based on cumulative second or only doses administered per 100 residents; ie, the UK is not the fastest. It may be, of course, that Mr Johnson is comparing today’s job numbers with those from, for example, 1989 (approximately 25,000,000). I don’t know. Also, it is true that statistics can be contested and manipulated to suit a particular argument. However, as Mr Johnson never, as far as I know, quotes sources or data points,
it is difficult to know if he is telling the truth (although history suggests there is a chance he might not be). The figures I have quoted, the most accurate I can find, do not tally with Mr Johnson’s. Perhaps our local MPs could check, and should the prime minister’s figures prove to be less than accurate, hold him to account? Of course, if I am wrong, I am happy to be corrected. Gordon Morris Sherborne
In the latest edition of Dorset Council News, the Leader of the Council cites savings of over £25m due to the creation of the amalgamated council. I should like then for Cllr Flower to justify the significant year on year increase in council tax that has been applied since that time, with another increase to come in April. The merger of the councils was sold on the basis of economies of scale and direct benefit to Dorset local tax payers. I assume that the councillor reads the NBV magazine, to keep himself up to date with local happenings and opinions. In addition, I would also ask him, that with the purchase of St Mary’s School, I believe in Wiltshire, will Dorset Council be paying a council tax on that property to Wiltshire County Council on our behalf? I would like to see a reply to both these questions from Cllr Flower in the next edition of the NBV. Jeremy Bloomfield Gillingham

Letters Having the ear of neither the Prime Minister nor the International Trade Secretary, I wondered if I might get a response instead from our local MPs in their regular contributions to this publication, Could they please explain to me and to any other puzzled readers the contribution that the recently signed International Trade Deal with Australia will make to our zero-carbon target? Record-breaking bids at Duke’s Auctioneers Duke’s are currently inviting entries for their art and design post-1880 auction which will take place in April. With strong international marketing and bidding available on three different online platforms prices realised has grown from one auction to the next. The last art and design auction saw some record breaking results from ‘Two Irish Girls’ by Augustus Edwin John which sold for £32,500 to a Cayley Robinson soaring nearly three times higher than any of his previous works to £123,500. Duke’s is proud to be a market leader in 20th century art, their specialists would be delighted to provided complementary and confidential valuations, whether it be a single painting, sculpture or an entire collection. Please contact the Head of Sale John Holmes at john. holmes@dukes-auctions.com or on 01305 265080 for advice or a confidential valuation.
Clarke’s successful Chinese sale Clarke’s Auctions at Semley would like to wish their customers a very happy and safe New Year. Their last sale of 2021 saw three days of fierce bidding and with almost 3,000 buyers registered to bid online they saw over 95 per cent of lots selling well over estimate. An Ancient Egyptian carved carnelian and gold necklace with gold symbols of falcon heads, palm trees and animals fetched a shade under £10,000, an 18ct gold and sapphire cigarette case retailed by top London jewellers Garrard & Co. fetched £5,100, an early 19th century Grand Tour ruin modelled after the Roman Temple of Vespasian and Titus fetched £2,400 and a wonderful late 17th century Flemish tapestry depicting a court scene, in distressed condition, fetched £3,400. The Chinese market is still buoyant despite travel restrictions and saw a damaged Kangxi period Yen-Yen vase fetch £2,400 and a Chinese mutton fat jade carving of a young boy sell for £2,750. They offer free home visits to value items for consignment into all future sales and are open for free verbal valuations Monday to Friday at their salerooms behind the Kingsettle Antique Centre on Station Road, Semley. All enquiries should be directed to either Richard Clarke or Karen Marshall on 01747 855109.

Unusual automobilia up for grabs Charterhouse have been holding successful auctions of classic cars, motorcycles and automobilia for nearly 20 years. During this time they have sold petrol pumps, enamel signs and other automobilia alongside classic cars and motorcycles. More recently they have split the automobilia off in to a specialist sale in its own right. Amongst the lots already entered for their next automobilia auction in April are two rare badges. Both were the property of Lt Col Philip Thomson-Walker MBE TD and have passed down through the family after he died in 1993. There is an early Aston Martin Owners Club badge and a Nurburg-Ring enamel dashboard badge. Both survived the past 95 years and are estimated at £100-200 in the Charterhouse specialist auction of automobilia on Friday 1st April. Charterhouse are now accepting further entries for this automobilia auction, their February specialist auctions of silver, jewellery and watches, followed by classic and vintage cars and motorcycles. Contact Richard Bromell at Charterhouse for advice, valuations and to arrange a home visit at The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne 01935 812277 info@charterhouseauction.com

We Clear, Clean and Move. Free quote on viewing We offer a range of property clearance services with a reliable and efficient clearance service that takes the stress out of house clearance, downsizing, decluttering, or clearing unwanted items or rubbish. We will clear everything from single items to whole house contents. We clear houses, garages, and gardens as well as general rubbish clearance. We have a hoarding expert who can assist in decluttering and clearance of hoarded properties. On occasion we do buy items or can advise if these should go to auction.
Where our waste goes
We try and recycle as much as we can however some of the items cleared are not reusable. In these circumstances our clearance waste is split into categories of household waste, wood, rubble, metals, and hazardous waste such as old refrigeration units, paint and mattresses. We use 35yard containers for household waste, wood and metals, with most of our waste going to Canford Recycling centre, near Wimborne or Dorset Waste Partnership.

Food & Drink
Cooking…
with Mrs Simkins
Gammon and Apricot Pie The flavours of this lovely pie work so beautifully together: it’s warm and comforting yet beautifully light, just the thing for this time of year. Serve it with a dark green vegetable, such as steamed Savoy cabbage or curly kale and a dab of mustard. Serves 2-4 Approximately 450g cold, boiled potatoes 1 medium onion, diced 1tablespoon oil 200-250g unsmoked gammon steak, cut into small
cubes 10 x soft-eating dried apricots, chopped ½ vegetable gel stock pot or similar Plenty of freshly ground black and ground white pepper 2 tablespoons hot water 2 tablespoons crème fraiche Knob of butter Preheat oven to180C (fan ovens) gas mark 6 or equivalent You will need a 23cm (9 inch) pie plate or similar shallow baking dish Dice the equivalent of 2 small-medium potatoes and
slice the rest. Keep them separate. Cook the onion slowly in the oil. Once the onions are under way, add the gammon. Add the apricots around 5 minutes before the onions and gammon are cooked. Stir in the ½ gel stock pot until dissolved. Season generously with pepper and
add the hot water and crème fraiche. Stir together and add the cubed potatoes. Cook gently for a further 5 minutes. Pour the filling into the dish and arrange the sliced potatoes on top. Dot with butter and bake for 30-35 minutes until the potatoes are golden.

Food & Drink After the rich feasts of the festive season, I thought you might enjoy a nutrient dense but satisfying salad, this time showcasing the seasonal delights of parsnips, kale, and shallots. Parsnips are a member of the apiaceae family including carrots and parsley, and are good sources of vitamin C, K, E, B6, folate, magnesium, thiamine, phosphorus, and zinc. Kale is very nutrientdense, meaning it has high levels of nutrients per gram, with good levels of vitamins A, K, C, B6, manganese, calcium, copper, potassium, and magnesium. Shallots are part of the same family as onions and garlic but boast a more impressive nutrient profile than both.
A seasonal salad They contain flavonols and antioxidants including quercetin and kaempferol which are released when they are cut and help form allicin a compound linked to a myriad of health benefits. Shallots also offer good levels of vitamins C, A, B6, potassium, iron, folate, manganese, and fibre. The fibres in shallots are prebiotic and help feed the beneficial bacteria in our guts.

Walking towards the future January, and a new year has arrived. The 2021 Christmas festivities have taken place amidst uncertainties driven by an invisible agent that continues to pose a threat to our health and prosperity. Despite my resilience, this pandemic has, once
again, dampened my spirits and worn me thin, and now, like many people, I am ready for a new start. As I walk out on the Cranborne Chase this bright January morning, the birds are singing and the catkins are hanging from their branches like

With my spirits lifted by the sunshine, my pace is as steady and as regular as my heart. Beat-by-beat and step-by-step, I am walking into the future, determining the paths I take and finding my own way. For me, walking is like life itself, a satisfying combination of enjoying each moment whilst still moving towards my goals. Here in the pine forest, green fronds glisten from the overnight rain and the earthy aroma of the forest floor is the sweetest of perfumes. I can hear the high-pitched trills of gold crest feasting high in the canopy and the chirpy two-tone song of coal tits. As my eyes drift upwards in search of them, it occurs to me that trees grow upwards towards their future whilst we move forwards in search of ours, yet both of us are in pursuit of light and nourishment.
Leaving the darkness of the conifers behind and moving out into the open sunlight, I am struck by a different song, a punchy, insistent call that I cannot quite recall. Eventually I find the distinguished musician, as the brown and pale hues of a marsh tit wearing a fine black cap comes into view amongst the old oaks. I walk until my legs begin to ache and the sun has dropped beneath the horizon. Heading for home, I stop to marvel as a fine, ethereal mist begins to blanket the fields in a white shroud. As the sky turns crimson, I recall a Tibetan proverb that my grandmother would recount, that “the secret of living well and longer is to eat half, walk double, laugh triple and love without measure”. Awaken your ‘joie de vivre’ by connecting to your ‘Chakras’ Bring more joy, passion and creativity into your life, connect with your energy flow. ‘Chakra’ meaning ‘wheel’ is a Sanskrit word, first cited in the revered texts of the Vedas, ancient Indian scriptures. The ‘wheels’ regulate the flow of energy between our mind, body and spirit. As long as the flow is balanced we feel aligned, in our ‘right place’. If the flow becomes blocked, we begin to suffer, depending on where the blockage occurs. Being aware of our chakras and recognising what each is responsible for, helps us stay in the flow. While they are complex and influence our life’s dramatically, having a brief synopsis of each chakra, its location and how they affect us, may help with that alignment. There are seven main chakras. The first is the root chakra, located at the base of the spine. When in balance we have good physical health, feel secure and grounded. When this chakra is out of balance we might have poor physical health, be out of touch with reality and have money issues The second, is our sacral chakra located in the belly, below the naval. When balanced we feel in control and happy with our direction in life, out of balance we may feel overemotional or flat. The third, our solar plexus chakra is located above the naval. When in balance we feel empowered and true in our self-belief, out of balance we may feel weak willed or be overbearingly dominant. The fourth, our heart chakra is located in the centre of the chest. In balance we are compassionate, open and loving, out of balance we may be possessive, jealous and closed down.

The fifth, our throat chakra, is located in the base of the neck. In balance our communication is truthful and we express ourselves creatively, out of balance we may find it difficult to express our opinions or we could be very gossipy. The sixth, our third eye chakra is located in the centre of the forehead. When in balance, we are in touch with our intuition and imagination and are able to see the big picture, out of balance we may have mental confusion and be narrow minded. The seventh, the crown chakra is located at the top of the head. When balanced, we have a sense of gratitude and sacredness in life, out of balance we feel a lack of meaning in life, a sense of alienation. There are some really simple steps that we can do to help us stay in the flow and keep those wheels turning. • Step into nature, feel your feet on the earth and breath • Connect with water, walk by a river or the sea • Sit by a fire and watch the flames • Look up to the sky • Sing, without a care to how you sound • Pick up a pencil and doodle • Take a moment to be kind to yourself Enjoy, connecting SOMERSET EAR WAX to your CLINIC chakras… keep that • Ear wax removal by irrigation energy • Ear check prior to Audiology • Fully trained and experienced nurse moving , • Home visits can be arranged for the housebound walk, sing, Sister Teresa Munro RGN dance… flow. 07962 106 045 / teresamunro@hotmail.co.uk Horizon Suite Frome Medical Practice, Enos Way, Frome BA11 2FH

Reboot, clear out and regenerate By the time this article comes out it will be Christmas and we will have had the shortest day of the year, which is always incredibly exciting. Luckily, as I write, we should be able to eat, drink and be merry with our loved ones for a couple of weeks. I thoroughly enjoy my food and wine and by the time New Year comes along, I can’t fit into any of my clothes and am waddling around wondering how I am going to lose all the mince pies and brandy butter. So,

my self-imposed detoxing in January is very welcome – by me – but met with much rolling of the eyes, groans and misery from my husband, especially as I am saying he has to do it for two months! But it is a chance to reboot your system, clear out toxins, let your liver regenerate, sleep properly and deeply and really boost your immune system so that your body, which always wants to heal itself, has the chance to fight of any incoming bugs. You need to come off alcohol, sugar, coffee and processed foods. A word of
What’s working? There’s a template going round some social media platforms called ‘what’s working now’. People list what’s going well for them now in their professional and personal lives. It’s positive, interesting, encouraging even. It’s another form of gratitude. I’ve written about the value of gratitude before because it’s such a powerful thing. Here’s why. Gratitude – the practising of gratitude – encourages us to focus on what has gone well that day. Things we have done or things that have happened to us. The very act of stopping to consider these things is, in itself, positive. It means we pause and consider. We process. We re-live that day before moving on to the next. We notice the good stuff. So, to give you an idea of the sort of things you could

warning, coffee can give you the most awful headache as the blood starts getting back up to your head. Coffee restricts blood vessels, particularly to the brain. It also aggravates your kidneys and bladder. It is better to stop dairy and grains as well, but that makes it very hard to eat at all, so cut down on both and make sure you eat good wholemeal bread. You need to alkaline your body. All the above makes you acidic which then restricts oxygen movement and uptake, which causes inflammation, damages organs, seriously depletes your immune system and can lead to heart failure and cancer. To alkaline your system, you need to
eat a rainbow of vegetables, particularly dark green leafy ones, some fruit including dark berries and drink good quality water (tap water is not great so a filter is a good investment). Start your day with half a lemon squeezed into some warm water. If you have time and ingredients, you can add a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda and some organic apple cider vinegar, a sprinkle of cinnamon and sweeten it with a tiny bit of raw honey. This is contrary to what you might think is an excellent way to alkaline your system in the morning and is also what we call a kidney flush which is the start of the detox routine. pellyfiona@gmail. com

the things that are happening to us and the world around us. To quote Denis Waitley, “Happiness cannot be travelled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.” If you want to make this a daily habit, it’s best done at the same time each day. Your list doesn’t have to be this long. Start with three things and build up to 10. Or whatever works for you – there’s no right or wrong amount and you can make this list in your head or write it down. Inspired by conversations and interviews with people in rural communities, Hefted is a new play by Devon-based Multi Story Theatre which explores the connection we have to the land, the pull of our past and what it means for our future. Hefted is embedded in the landscape, history, and psyche of rural life. Wryly funny, emotionally absorbing and interspersed with song and a spectacular soundscape, nine stories sweep across 600 years, starting in 1475 with a supernatural birth and moving through to an imagined 2075 in which tales from the past are retold to heal the present. From the fantastical to the dramatisation of real events, each story explores the notion of being ‘hefted’ – deeply connected to the land. Hefted will be at Litton Cheney Community Hall on Saturday, 29 January and Blandford Corn Exchange on Sunday, 30 January. Suitable for ages 14-plus, tickets are available from www.artsreach.co.uk

Shire Hall’s future secured
Shire Hall Museum has received a grant of £167,500 from the Government’s latest round from the Culture Recovery Fund to help the organisation recover from the impact of the covid pandemic. The Grade I listed building served as Dorset’s courthouse from 1797 until 1955. Now an award-winning social justice museum, Shire Hall brings over two centuries of justice and injustice to life. Director Abbie King said: “This funding will allow us secure the future of Shire Hall and ensure that we continue to thrive in a post pandemic economy. We’re proud to be custodians of this historic building and to share stories of justice and injustice with our visitors. Shire Hall is also committed to supporting our local community. From our work with people living with dementia, local LGBT youth groups and schools to showcasing local businesses in our shop and at our markets, this funding will allow us to continue enriching and supporting thousands of lives.” A total of £138 million has been awarded to heritage organisations from the three rounds of the government’s £2 billion Culture Recovery Fund support package This third round of grants are part of the additional £300 million announced by the Chancellor at March’s Budget. Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive, Historic England said: “We are delighted that the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage grants continue to keep so many heritage organisations going. Ears
Just giving repeated courses of ear drops can miss alternative causes such as foreign bodies (typically grass seeds), ruptured ear drums (common in chronic ear infections) and can lead to ineffective treatment due to excessively narrowed ear canals or resistant infections. Allergies are the most common causes of recurrent otitis externa. The ear is an extension of the skin and, being warm and moist, inflammation caused by an allergy, quickly leads to an increase in yeast growth causing excess wax production and irritation. This exacerbates the inflammation allowing secondary bacterial infections to develop. Many (but not all) dogs will have other signs of allergies as well such as excessive paw licking or an itchy bum. Certain dog breeds including poodles and poodle crosses grow hair in the ear canal which prevents the normal action of continuous wax/dirt removal in a normal healthy ear. Plucking these ears can reduce wax build up but can also damage the sensitive lining of the ear. Heavy ears such as those in some cocker spaniels keeps the ear environment moist increasing yeast Independent family run business offering growth. A common problem seen in small animal veterinary practice is recurrent inflammation of the ear known as otitis externa. This can involve all the structures of the ear canal from the ear drum outwards. Traditionally repeated courses of ear drops containing steroid, anti-yeast medication and antibiotics have been used. However this only treats ears which are obviously abnormal/painful leading to recurring damage and only temporarily removes symptoms if the underlying cause remains. Antibiotics should only be used when needed, and inappropriate use can lead to resistant infections.

regular ear cleaners but it is often a sign of inflammation which may cause secondary infection. Chronic ear disease causes significant discomfort seen by head shaking, scratching and rubbing and can cause temporary or permanent deafness. Chronic damage leads to narrowed ear canals which can trap discharge and infection inside leading to ear drum rupture and, potentially, middle and inner ear infections causing balance disorders and surgery may be indicated if these changes are permanent. The ideal way to manage these ears is to clear any existing infection, reverse all chronic changes and then prevent recurrence. Swabs of culture should be taken when infection is suspected to allow appropriate use of antibiotics. Re-examining the ears prior to stopping treatment ensures all chronic changes have been reversed (where possible). Long-acting products can be used when dogs are difficult to treat due to pain or temperament to ensure a full course of treatment is given. Once the ears are normal, controlling allergies, specific ear cleaners or local steroid ear drops can help reduce the incidence of recurrence. It is often worth the short term extra cost to resolve the problem and prevent it than to repeatedly treat flare ups and your dog will definitely thank you for not having ongoing painful ears! A lead into the local community By Janine Farley We jumped on the band wagon, alongside many others during lock down when we acquired our sweet, mischievous puppy, who we named Blue. Indeed, it is so sad to see the many negative articles about puppies who have missed out on socialisation and the surge reported by the RSPCA of abandoned and unwanted dogs being relinquished to rescue centres. Reflecting upon this I wanted to share our experience and a happy tale about our boy. Blue and I are just back from a crisp morning stride through our beautiful Dorset countryside. I feel both grateful and elated for this hour-anda-half immersed in nature’s vivacious autumn colours, smells and sounds. This morning we were lucky enough to see an egret skim the swollen river and the other day we witnessed a procession of swans whistling across the sky above in their slanted V formation - a truly magical sight and one I will never forget.
BEHAVIOUR TIPS Helen Taylor BSc (Hons) is a qualified, accredited behaviourist and is a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist and a Registered Practitioner with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council and is a member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (no 881). help@helentaylordorset.co.uk www.helentaylordorset.co.uk. In this series of short articles Helen offers bite-size tips on training your dog using effective, safe and humane methods. Tip #6 Recall. Many owners let their dog off lead and THEN try (usually not very successfully) to teach a recall. 1. Keep your dog on a long line and harness unless/until you have a 100% recall in that situation. If your dog may not come back if he sees another dog at 10m, then put him on a lead or long line 15m away from the point where another dog could appear. 2. Use one word consistently, rather than “come.... come here.... come on boy....... this way.... Whatsthis” and don’t repeat it. 3. Don’t set your dog up to fail - only use your recall cue if you know he will come back. 4. Don’t call him if coming to you will not be positive for him, so don’t call him, then put him back on a lead or do something he finds unpleasant. Lastly, use a proportionate reward! If you call your dog away from the prospect of greeting another dog or chasing something, and the reward is boring, he may learn to ignore you in this situation. Of course, in an emergency, do what you need to get your dog back. But try to prevent that situation from recurring.

Walking with Blue brings numerous health benefits. It is precious time where I can untangle my mind and focus on the day ahead; I’ve worked on cardiovascular fitness and strengthened my bones and muscles and phew! that means I don’t have to feel guilty about not doing a gym session on Zoom. It is true to say the benefits of brisk walking are undeniable and of course can be achieved without a four-legged companion. The thing that compelled me to write this was the connection I’ve made with the local community since Blue joined our family. The friendly interactions, smiles and morning greetings with fellow dog walkers are a continued source of pleasure. Exchanges can be casual and typically British comments about the weather to a more in-depth conversation. I’ve had valuable advice from experienced dog owners to conversations about a whole range of wonderfully random topics. These are quite often dissolved upon realising Blue has got the scent of something interesting and is wandering off, nose to the ground on his own adventure. The funny thing is I don’t know the names of the people, just their dogs. So, although some wise friends warned us that having a dog would be a tie and it is the case, I am thankful to our cheeky pup for the relationships I have made with others and how I now feel more a part of our local community. All of this certainly makes up for any of the inconveniences including those muddy paw prints across the kitchen floor. I’ll mop them later, as right now I’m going to sit down with my much-anticipated cup of coffee.

Care home’s donation to food bank in the season of goodwill
‘Tis the season of giving and one local care home have done just that! Trinity Manor Care Home in Sherborne recently held a ‘pop-up’ Christmas fayre in their car park, enabling their residents, staff, families and locals to enjoy a bit of festive shopping, with music also provided by the Salvation Army and also Sherborne Girls School, who sang some carols to get everyone feeling extra Christmassy. Advertising on social media, the home asked if locals could bring items along with them to the market, which
blackmorevale.net
could then be dropped off at a ‘donation station’ for the local Sherborne Food Bank. The response was overwhelming, with many people bringing much needed food and toiletry items to drop off. After mentioning the ‘donation station’ over the phone to one of the members of the Salvation Army Band, in true charitable fashion, they rallied around and when they turned up to play at the home, they arrived with boxes of food. Home Services Advisor, Rebekah Goddard, said, ‘we
literally couldn’t believe the extent of their generosity. Not only did many of then travel from as far afield as Wales, Exeter and Plymouth to play voluntarily for us, but they came laden with donations – we cannot thank them all enough for their kindness!’ The following week, some of the pupils from Sherborne Girls School came to help load up the Trinity Manor mini-bus, then residents from the home, along with General Manager, Sohail, and Deputy Manager, Paul, had the task of dropping off all of the donations to their collection hub in Longburton. There to greet them was the lovely Antony, one of the many,
many volunteers who help to ensure local families get the help and support that they need, especially at this time of year, which can be especially tough for those who have found things a little harder than usual. Sohail said, ‘It has been a very humbling experience, seeing and hearing about the work that they do at our local food bank and we have seen that the support that they need goes way beyond Christmas, and we very much look forward to doing something further for them as we go into 2022. A huge thank you to all that donated at our fayre.’

ON YOUR BIKES: Wincanton Wheelers Santa ride
It’s the Wheel thing for cyclists’ awards
Wincanton Wheelers held their annual awards evening at the Maddocks Pavilion in Wincanton. Thirty-five members enjoyed the social occasion with fine food. This was followed by the awards presentation and a “skittles” competition which was a lot more gentle on the legs but no less hotly contested! Awards on the night went to; Member of the Year and Founders Trophy - Ben Whitney
Fastest Male Time Trialist Steve Way Crash of the Year – Stuart Evans Skittles Trophy - Matthew Loader Special Bespoke Jersey - Anne Bloechle who is returning to America. This was followed by a Santa ride on Saturday, 18 December. Twenty riders took part dressed in seasonal attire, raising smiles and waves from surprised onlookers. The route of 25
miles started in Wincanton and included a visit to Gillingham, via several villages, then returning to Wincanton through a different route. The ride was concluded with a visit to residential estates across Wincanton plus the High Street and adjoining roads in a bid to keep sharing Christmas cheer. Cyclists looking to get involved can find out more at www.wincantonwheelers. co.uk

A GOOD FIT: Ian Pollard with new coaches Shams Wahab and Paul Russell
Ian Pollard as being able to coach runners in the club. Having qualified coaches enables the club to teach the latest, most advanced and safe techniques as recommended by England Athletics which a great boost
for current members and to help attract new members to the club. The assessment required three main areas to be passed. The coaches had to prepare a one-hour training session focusing on the main areas of coaching;
a warm-up followed by drills leading to a running focused main unit and finishing with a cool down. The second part of the assessment was an eight-week plan to improve an existing runner, with running form and a running goal being the outcome. Finally, Shams and Paul had to pass a knowledge test. n The Dorset Doddlers run a free Couch To 5K course, with the next programme beginning Monday, January 10 in Sturminster Newton. Theo’s on course for success after picking up championship Fifteen-year-old Theo Anderson Gannon, who lives in Sherborne and plays his golf off an impressive handicap of three, ended a very successful 2021 by winning the Junior Championship at Yeovil Golf Club. Another impressive achievement in giving him both the Club’s Junior Open and Junior Championships, as well as posting a win on the Junior Clutch Tour in Surrey and equalling the course record of five under at Paultons Golf Centre in Hampshire.
WELL PLAYED: Theo Anderson Gannon receives his trophy
Theo’s gross 73 around the 18-hole Old Course was also the lowest nett score on the day and saw him finish two
shots ahead of five handicap Chloe Northover, another of the club’s rising stars. When asked about his latest
golfing achievement Theo said “I had the dream of being a footballer until I was 12 and then I started to live for golf. I often get called a young Rory McIlroy lookalike... I’ve got the hair and now I want the golf to go with it”. Yeovil members will certainly support and applaud him as he seeks to make his dream a reality.
Wincanton’s away-day joy at leaders Welton Rovers 0 Wincanton Town 3 Toolstation Western League Division One Having been won the Team of the Month award for November, Wincanton made the short trip to the league leaders looking to make it 10 games undefeated and seven wins on the trot in what would be their sternest test yet, the leaders undefeated on their own patch had only conceded one goal. Wincanton started brightly giving Welton no time on the ball and forcing mistakes. Thanks to some quick passing, Louis Irwin, Ryan Pike and Dan Quirke had early efforts but failed to hit the target or test Alfie Kelsey in the Welton goal. Wincanton took the lead their early dominance deserved on 16 minutes as a poor defensive header put Quirke in on goal, a heavy touch forced him wide but he had
IN ON GOAL: Action from the Welton v Wincanton match
the presence to pick out Jamie Thompson on the edge of the box, who cut inside and fired across the goal through a crowded penalty area into the bottom corner. Wincanton doubled their lead on 24 minutes as a perfectly weighted through ball by Wincanton skipper Dan Wise found Quirke who fired home. Irwin had a couple of other chances in the half to increase Wincanton’s lead further but failed to hit the target as half time arrived with a comfortable 2-0 score line, this reflected
Wincanton’s dominance as Nathan Ball was a bystander in the Wincanton goal as Welton failing to register a shot on target. Wincanton continued to dominate proceedings after the restart and Kelsey was called upon to make outstanding saves from Williams and Irwin in quick succession. Welton forced a little pressure onto the Wincanton backline but Lewis Russell went wide of the upright and another scuffed shot didn’t worry the net.
Ball was forced into his only save of the match on 63 minutes from Jake Slocombe who found some space to let fly and Ball pushed the powerful shot away to safety as Welton looked to find away back into the game. An inspired substitution from manager Chris Wise killed the game as Cam Allen was brought on for the hardworking Thompson on 68 minutes and promptly scored the decisive third goal firing home after a point-blank save. As the game petered out, Matt Curnock let fly with a freekick from 30 yards which just went over the bar on 89 minutes which would have capped a fine 3-0 victory which moves Wincanton up to fourth in the league and now look forward to the festive fixtures starting with the Boxing Day trip to Wells City. The next home game is now Saturday, January 8 at 3pm v Hengrove.

Three years of Shaftesbury Car Link success
Martin and June Hull took on the scheme in 2018 when it was undertaking around 35 trips per month. Drivers are now carrying out in excess of 350 trips per month (sometimes over 450 on covid vaccination days). Over 300 people have been taken to their covid vaccinations and the scheme are proud to think that they have been an essential element in keeping the community safe. Contrary to widespread belief the scheme is not a business, is not funded and is run by unpaid volunteers. There are two wheelchair vehicles, one purchased from personal finances and one by a driver because he “thought it might be useful”. The plan for the future (subject to grants and funding) is to get a six-seater wheelchair vehicle so that people can be taken out for enjoyment. One of the existing vehicles needs some repairs and they are looking to try and raise £1,000 for this to be
completed. Donations may be given by cheque (payable to Shaftesbury Car Link) or cash and left at Shaftesbury Town Hall (please place in a sealed envelope clearly marked Shaftesbury Car Link) or email for bank details for direct payments (shaftesburycarlink@gmail. com). From the New Year the telephone hours will be changing so they will be contactable from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am 2pm on Saturdays (07763 426664). Phone lines will be closed on Sundays to give them a break and only pre-booked medical appointments will be carried out at weekends. From the New Year any shopping and social trips must be booked in advance – same day bookings will not be taken. Of course, none of this would happen without the dedicated team of volunteer drivers who are so highly thought of in the community and thanks go out to them. They
are not just volunteers – they are now part of Martin and June’s friends and extended family. The scheme’s motto is “More than community transport”. Everyone goes that extra mile, is caring and compassionate and an absolute credit to Shaftesbury and the surrounding areas. One of their users summed them up: “It is not just a transport service; it is a lifeline. They
go above and beyond and, as their name suggests it is a link. It is a link to the support of family and a link to the support of the community.” So, on that note, Martin and June and all the drivers at Shaftesbury Car Link wish you a very peaceful, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year and hope that Santa puts a six-seater wheelchair vehicle in their Christmas stocking!

Send a classic car for Jim’s birthday A classic car aficionado was left ‘speechless and grinning from ear to ear’ when a collection of vehicles from different eras turned up outside the door of his Sturminster Newton nursing home. Knowing of his longstanding hobby, team members at Colten Care’s Newstone House arranged the surprise birthday treat for resident Jim Atkins. They contacted local owners’ club Sturminster Newton Car and Bike Enthusiasts who brought along nine of their muchloved vehicles, including a beautiful early 1950s Alvis limousine, various cars from the 1960s, a Normandy Landings US army jeep and a Porsche 911 sports car. Jim was especially taken with a red Sunbeam Alpine, a British marque made famous in popular culture through appearances in 1960s films such as the James Bond blockbuster Dr No and the Michael Caine-Shirley MacLaine comedy heist caper Gambit. Weymouth-born Jim, a retired farmer, has been a classic car enthusiast all his life with a particular fondness for red models, so the Sunbeam was a definite
SUNNY JIM: Jim Atkins at Newstone House in Sturminster Newton with the Sunbeam Alpine and, below, some of the other classic cars which arrived for his brthday surprise
draw. Jim said: “There were so many cars I wanted to drive them all. It was wonderful. Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make this happen.” Club founder Chris
Spackman, who arrived in the Porsche 911, said: “It was an absolute pleasure and very rewarding for us to meet and bring pleasure to Jim and a fellow resident, and for them to have the opportunity to enjoy our
vehicles.” Karlene Duffy, Companionship Team leader at Newstone House, said: “Jim always talks about car shows he has been to, and he has a passion for classic cars, with lovely memories of red ones in particular. When the owners’ club kindly offered to bring some of their collection over for Jim to see we thought it would be a lovely early Christmas present for him and a chance to rekindle memories of driving on the open road in years gone by. “We weren’t disappointed Jim was speechless for most of the time and grinning from ear to ear.” Sturminster Newton Car and Bike Enthusiasts have a regular event on the first Saturday of each month in Sturminster Newton. It has grown from four-to-five vehicles up to 60 since it was founded four years ago. Members meet to discuss and enjoy their vehicles, and to show them to visitors.
Super models on track to make an exhibition of themselves After the enforced lay-off due to the pandemic the Wessex Association of Model Railway Clubs return to the Cheese and Grain in Frome for the weekend of January 8 and 9. The layouts come from those submitted by the 67 members of the association who are situated throughout southern England. Over the last couple of

years a number of new creations have taken place due to the extra hobby time available and these are displayed around the exhibition. Opening times are 10am to 4pm on both days. Children under the age of 12 have free entrance, otherwise the fee is £6. Nine of the best-known traders are on show, so that the modeller will be
able to replenish stores used up over Christmas. As usual refreshments by the Cheese and Grain will be in full swing. The organisers of the exhibition ask the public to wear masks and to be ready to write their contact details at the pay desk. So please support this, the only model railway exhibition to be held in Somerset in January.

A303 plans to be re-submitted Following the High Court’s Order on July 30, 2021 quashing the decision to grant development consent for the A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down, the Secretary of State has issued his Statement of Matters inviting National Highways to make further representations to re-determine the application by January 11, 2022. Following this, the Secretary of State will invite Interested Parties to submit further representations on the Applicant’s response and on all other matters in this Statement of Matters. The deadline for any such response will be confirmed in due course. National Highways states: “We remain confident the scheme is the best solution to solving the traffic problems along this notoriously congested section of the A303 and to remove the sight and the sound of the traffic from the Stonehenge landscape and the World Heritage Site.”

Learning central to business success Five tips that mentors suggest are top of your list. Building a successful business doesn’t have to be something you do all alone. Dorset Business Mentors offer a long-term mentor to support your journey. Alistair Bayliss, Joint Project Manager said; “Having a mentor is a powerful tool for your business arsenal. “A mentor has no agenda or particular axe to grind, other than to help you and your business succeed. But it will give you someone to be accountable to, and someone to test your ideas out with. “The road to business success is challenging and requires a keen mind-set, some investment, and for some, even the juggling of regular work alongside your business goals. Walkers’ guide nets £1,000 for charities An Ansty business has raised thousands for charity. During the first lockdown last year Carol Wallis and Immy Robinson of Brewery Farm and The Fox Inn came up with an energetic way to raise money for local good causes. The Ansty Ambler is a charming guide to walks, of varying lengths in the surrounding area. Carol said: “It came up when my sister and I went on a holiday to the Lake District. We had two dogs and no idea where to walk. We have lots of people staying here with their dogs. “When I’m walking around the village I quite often meet people with the book in hand!”
READ ALL ABOUT IT: The Ansty Ambler Picture: Lola Rose
The Ansty Ambler is available for a £2 charitable donation and so far it has raised over £1000, with £500 donated to Milborne St Andrew First School,
which will help build a play area, and £500 to Hazelbury Bryan Primary School in Sturminster Newton. Mrs Waring, headteacher at Hazelbury Bryan said: “We
were very overwhelmed and we have arranged a mental health and well-being day on Wednesday, January 5 for all staff and children.” The Fox Inn also holds a monthly raffle which raises more than £200 each time. Donations have been made recently to the Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust and The Cat’s Protection League. They’ve also raised over £700 for Dorchester Intensive Care Unit in memory of a local resident and last year donated £500 to Cheselbourne School. Carol said: “The guide is ongoing and we continue to fundraise. We’ve sold over 1000 copies this year and are looking forward to more fundraising this year.”
Local charity helps young people gain valuable skills Retired residents from Lynch Close, Mere, recently celebrated Christmas with a meal at The Walnut Tree Inn. Transport was provided by a minibus that was supplied by Seeds for Success, a local youth organisation, and the minibus was driven by local councillor, George Jeans. Seeds4Success is a youth work charity based in Mere, which provides opportunities for personal and social development for young people living in South West Wiltshire. They run open access youth clubs, targeted programmes for those with additional needs and functional skills programmes focusing on literacy and numeracy, helping them develop skills towards employment and giving back to their local communities. A recent project has been collecting ash trees felled because of ash dieback disease and chopping them into logs. These logs will be delivered to those in their communities suffering from fuel poverty.

Carp a-plenty at Hayes competition Big and Little Hayes Pairs Match Todber Manor A very busy second qualifier in the Todber Big Hayes and Little Hayes £10,000 pairs competition. There were 54 carp caught across the two lakes over the weekend with the biggest coming from Big Hayes weighing 34lb 10oz. There were 4, 30lb + carp landed. Rob Burgess and Karl Palmer stormed into an early lead on Big Hayes banking 10 carp in the first few hours which gave them a solid lead. The next half of the match was a lot quieter for them banking one more carp but that was enough to seal the deal. The fight for the second

qualifying spot heated up on day two with the carp a lot more spread out. Peg 3, 6 and 8 battling for the spot with good carp caught from all three pairs. Dave and Josh Bellew did the damage though from Peg 8. On Little Hayes it was a lot slower. Jack Stamp and Steve Lovell managed to secure the win banking six carp to 20lb 12oz. Second place went to Todber’s own Dan Ponting and Arnie Fernandes who banked three carp. It was anyone’s spot though, with most pairs catching a carp and with only another decent one required it could have been very different. Big Hayes: 1: Rob Burgess + Karl Palmer 230lb 11oz (11 carp). 2: Dave Bellew + Josh Bellew 144lb 8oz (7 carp) Little Hayes: 1:Jack Stamp + Steve Lovell 72lb 12oz (6 carp). 2: Dan Ponting + Arnie Fernandes 43lb 0oz (3 carp)

Call to dairy farmers to have your say When I graduated from Bristol University in 2009, I collected my degree certificate with a sense of pride, achievement, and relief, as it felt like the years of hard work and study had paid off. Further to this, a second ceremony followed, whereby all newly graduated vets were welcomed to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). In the UK vets can only practice if they have been granted admission to the membership. And before signing the register every veterinary surgeon must make a declaration upon admission which acknowledges the serious responsibilities we commit to uphold. Whilst our farm clients do not have to take such a formal oath, they do have to conform to standards set
by overseeing bodies such as Red Tractor. So, farmers conduct their work based around very similar ethics to ours. With farmers and vets alike our work with animals is certainly not just a job, it is a lifestyle choice, with animal welfare at the heart of it. There is a common misconception that a herd of hundreds of animals are not cared for as well as perhaps one or two individuals. However, this is not the case. I go to large dairies where the farm staff know all the individual cows, even when they own hundreds. Knowing the cows this well helps with early detection should a problem arise. Farmers monitor for and treat painful conditions such as lameness and mastitis. Fertility, mobility, and mortality data

is also reviewed frequently in case a problem should occur, so it can be treated and resolved quickly. Farmers of the UK can proudly say they produce food to the highest welfare standards and as an industry we continue to strive to ensure this benchmark is maintained. However, the way this is measured across the dairy industry continues to be discussed. Therefore, at Friars Moor we are supporting a survey looking into this. It is being championed by XLVets and has been organised by VetSalus. We are hoping to help gather dairy farmer’s opinions on health, welfare and farm assurance and want to know what data
and measurements you use, how useful these are and what parameters are good indicators of this. You can find the survey via the following link: https:// docs.google.com/forms/d/ e/1FAIpQLScM_R7P3zfP QYRtH20MW8vX12mtt93 q8n1xw0xx3CWaK-909g/ viewform. You can also find more information on our social media posts or our website. We know that welfare is a priority for our farmer’s, but the industry needs their experience and knowledge to help shape how this important area is assessed.

Carers finally receive the recognition they deserve The pandemic has forced Government to finally recognise the importance of carers. In an unprecedented gesture of support in November the Government announced the Workforce Recruitment and Retention Fund for Adult Social Care for 20212022 and advised that £162.5 million would be available to Local Authorities. Local Authorities were given the responsibility to allocate the funds to frontline carers looking after people in their jurisdiction. Dorset County Council responded swiftly to ensure that frontline care staff received their £150 share of the grant just before Christmas. This recognition highlights the hugely important work that carers do. Now more than ever we need people who can make themselves available to look after those in the community that so desperately

need care. Many people are looking for help to enable them to continue living at home, where in many cases their loved ones are struggling to look after them on their own. All they need to continue their lives at home is a little extra support from a home care assistant. Additional to those already at home there are many people stuck in hospital because there is simply no support available to look after them if they were to be discharged. In many cases all they need is just an hour or two per day to enable them to go home. At Bramley Home Care we continue to receive calls for help, calls for support that we are not able to give. Although we have had a great response to our previous calls for help, we still need more people. The pandemic has highlighted the need and the importance of carers, the Government has recognised this with the grant to help our sector employ, train and retain staff. As additional proof of the seriousness of the need for carers the Government has also added Senior Carers to the list of professionals that we can attract from overseas. The current situation and the recognition from Government has raised the appreciation of the great people who are our carers and helped turn, what used to be seen as a low paid job, into a career.

Recruitment At Bramley Home Care we fully embrace this and provide our staff with all the support and training they need to enable them to look after those in our community who need them. Wages are no longer set by the minimum wage but reflect the importance of the profession. This has led to an upward pressure on the cost of care, which is something we, as a community must accept if we are to remunerate those kind and caring people who go out, 7 days a week, day and night, in all weather to provide the care that people need now and to those of us that may need it in the future. Over the years Bramley Home Care has gone from strength to strength. Our success is based upon our philosophy that we care first and foremost for our carers, which in turn, allows us to provide the professional and reliable care that our customers have come to expect from us. We ensure that our carers get the training and ongoing support they need. We also ensure they get the (paid) travel time that they need to get to each customer on time and without having to rush. We also ensure that the timings stated within the agreed care plan are realistic, so that they have sufficient time to carry out the duties with the care and diligence that is required from a professional care worker. Although home care by its very nature is a lone working profession, carers at Bramley Home Care are very much part of a team. They remain in constant communication via our online apps and the many staff
meetings, office-based training sessions, supervisions and appraisals. If after reading the above you feel that you would like to join our team, either full time or part time please give us a call, we would love to hear from you. Richard Wagner Director
