Squirrels go nuts over new Dray

New mayor in Ferndown n The new Town Mayor for Ferndown is Councillor Lawrence Wilson, inset, and his deputy is Cllr John Baxter Pictures: TOM SCRASE

Who is poisoning the county’s trees?

By Faith Eckersall Dorset Council says there has been an increase in damage to its trees across the county, including Coventry Close, Corfe Mullen, Birchwood Drive, Alderholt and Sturminster Marshall’s Churchill Close. On each occasion, the

culprit appears to be trying to poison and kill the tree so it will have to be removed. Apart from the actions being illegal, the council says there is a wider safety issue of the tree becoming unstable and either it, or its branches, failing and damaging property or even causing

injury or death. Dorset Police have been informed of all the locations and they and the council will monitor these sites for further activity. People with information can contact the council in confidence at arboriculture@ dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.

The 22nd Christchurch (Hurn) Air Scout Group is the first in the area to open a Dray as new Squirrels join more than 300 other Drays around the country. But they need more volunteers. The little Squirrels welcomed Sue Bungey, Mayor of Christchurch, above, and others into their Dray to watch them build minicampfires, sing songs and tuck into their party cake. Chris Bishop, deputy group Scout leader says: “As a growing diverse group we need additional adult volunteers, whether on the committee, section assistants or new leaders.” If you could help, contact Scout leader Oli Micklefield at gsl@airscouts.uk.

Bike brothers prepare to cross USA Two Dorset brothers are counting down to the race of their lives, one of the world’s most gruelling cycling challenges, to raise money to help stroke patients. Raised in a military family, Jack and Alex Forster from Poole are just weeks away from competing as a two-man relay team in the ultra-endurance Race Across America. Funds raised by the pair will go towards new state-of-the-art tilt-tables which will help physiotherapists provide safe and effective early rehabilitation to some of the most unwell patients at University Hospitals Dorset. Together, Jack and Alex will cycle 3,175 miles from California to Maryland. Covering 400 miles a day, they will cross 12 states while climbing more than five times the height of Everest – and all within an official time limit of nine days and 12 hours. The pair will dip their bike wheels in the waters of the Pacific before heading east through the Mojave Desert and

across Death Valley into Nevada, Utah and the Rocky Mountains. The route them takes them through Kansas, across the Mississippi River, into the Appalachians and finally to Maryland where they reach the Atlantic. Once the clock starts, they will take turnabout sessions - one cycling, the other resting - until the race is done. Jack, 33, co-owner of the E-motion Fitness Hub in Poole, said: “The first two to three days will be extremely challenging as we climb through the desert to the Rockies in intense heat.

Temperatures could be up to 40 or 50C. We’ve never experienced that before. But, after we are through the Rockies, we have a 1,500-mile descent.” Travelling in a van with the pair is a support team of friends including a mechanic, driver, navigator, videographer, cook and ‘dogsbody’. Everyone will sleep in the van including each brother when they are resting. For more information on Race Across America and to sponsor Jack and Alex, visit https://gofund.me/df30a360.

Searching for the lost models

Wimborne Model Town is appealing for information about four Dorset model dioramas that featured in the grounds of the original 1950s site. The charity attraction is celebrating its 70th anniversary this summer, having opened for the first time on August 1, 1952. The first guide book for the new and developing 1/10th scale layout of Wimborne described four additional landscape models of local attractions - the Weymouth White Horse, Badbury Rings, Bath Hill and Purbeck’s Blue Pool, the latter into which

visitors still throw coins for the benefit of local charities. The models were situated towards the exit area and became superseded by ongoing developments including coin operated dodgems in the 1970s. Spokesman Greg Hoar said: “ It would be wonderful to see any early pictures that visitors may have taken as nothing exists in our archive. We’d be very pleased to hear recollections and anecdotal evidence of visits during our formative years.” Call 0750 3699370 or e-mail greghoar@ wimborne-modeltown.com.

Support for war victims in Ukrainian

People living in the BCP Council area sponsoring Ukrainian guests can now provide them with a booklet in their own language. The 26-page booklet includes advice on support payments, opening bank accounts and registering with a doctor, information from council partners, including Jobcentre Plus and community groups, such as Dorset Race Equality Council and the International Care Network. There is also advice on how to report any war crimes they witnessed. The council has also produced a booklet for sponsors, with guidance on how to apply for the £350 ‘thank you’ payment and how accommodation checks and DBS checks will be carried out. Ferndown Community Larder, run by Ferndown Community Support CIC, is already going from strength to strength, writes Hannah Hobbs-Chell. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers and organising committee, we have made a significant difference to people already. It was clear there was the will and need for a Food Bank too, and so we did! So we are tackling both food waste and food poverty in a more targeted and productive way. We have short-dated foods available for all. These include fresh vegetables and fruit, and bread and pastries (lots!). We also have a dedicated zone for those struggling financially only, which includes tinned foods, cereals, drinks, snacks and rice and pasta among other items. Alongside this, we have established both a pet bank and a hygiene bank for

those struggling too. We are establishing a membership scheme to allow simple, effective and sensitive management of the ‘bank’ side of the Larder. To volunteer or seek our services, visit ferndown communitysupport.org.uk, or phone during the week on 01202 936121. Do come and take a look at the Larder for yourselves, we would be delighted to show you what we have. We are at the rear of Ferndown Day Centre, adjacent to the car park barrier. The Larder is open weekdays, 2pm-5pm, and Saturdays 10.30am-1pm.

Why not support home-grown food? Why are we not supporting home grown in this unstable world? As a Dorset farmer’s daughter and wife, a few weeks ago in Catering Magazine, I was sad to read it welcoming in the Australian larder that the British Government signed us up to back in December. We British farmers knew very little about this trade deal that the Government was signing us into and it goes against everything that we are trying to do. We should all be asking our own citizens to eat and support local food. Yes, Australian farmers produce excellent Wagyu beef and their lamb is also very good, but no better than the home-reared meat of the farmers right here on our doorstep. At Rawston Farm, we carried out our own survey last Easter to discover that imported lamb was more expensive than our local English option.

It makes no sense to choose the imported option. Yes, our fruits are not as exotic as our Australian cousins, but when British apples, pears, raspberries and strawberries are in season, they are some of the best in the world. What other things do we produce in the UK that are forgotten in these strategic trade deals? Sugar beet and awardwinning wines for a start. And as the home of whisky, why are we importing that too? The Government says prices are lower and the supply chain better, but flying food and drinks 9,445 miles and then paying our own farmers to re-wild and plant trees rather than cultivate food is ridiculous. Food from home is the safest choice to feed the population in the wake of Brexit, Covid and now the war in Ukraine. We are faced with the strong possibility of running out of sunflower oil as Ukraine is

one of its’ biggest producers and this is just one example. Producing food on home soil from some of the most talented farmers, fishermen and food producers in the

world is not only safer and more sensible, it’s morally and ethically responsible to the people of the UK. Barbara Cossins Blandford

‘Human fish’ Oly conquers Cayman

THE DORSET OPERA

MMXXII

The home of Country House opera in South West England featuring renowned soloists and full orchestra

Marquee Bar | Picnics | Formal Dining

Giacomo Puccini Picture: MAGGIE JACKSON

by Lorraine Gibson Not content with breaking one world swimming record, Oly Rush, turbo-swimmer extraordinaire, aka the Human Fish, has made history by becoming the first person to swim round the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman. The massive achievement that saw the Poole plasterer swim 60 miles, non-stop through shark-filled waters was anything but plain sailing. Prior to flying out, he said he realised it was a huge challenge and that sharks were consideration. “We’re doing all we can to mitigate the risks,” he said. On the constant 27C temperatures he added: “I won’t have a wetsuit so will need to apply sun cream throughout and I’ll also have to take on water during the swim.” Oly did it in the end, but boy did he earn his title. “I got round but it was absolutely brutal,” says the clean-ocean campaigner whose swim was to raise money to fund his cause. “It was so, so difficult. It took me to some very dark places and I literally wanted the ocean to swallow me up.” The ocean failed to oblige and he completed the 95.5km swim in 36 hours and 59 minutes before walking from the sea to board an ambulance to be assessed then taken to hospital. Oly, who has raised tens

of thousands of pounds for environmental charities and was partnered by Plastic Free Cayman and Project Planet, is now a bit of celebrity on the island. “I was never going to quit, but it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he admits. “My food plan went out of the window after four hours and there were channels I had to swim through alone because the support kayaks couldn’t get through.”And the sharks? “There were no major incidents during the swim, it was just extremely tough. “I went to hospital mainly to address dehydration. “My tongue was so swollen I could hardly drink. The pain in my shoulders was pretty intense but after some strong pain relief I was able to settle down and rest. Ever the eco-warrior, Oly said: “The important thing was to raise awareness about sea pollution and we’ve raised lots of money, too. “It is too early to say what I’ll do next, but I’ll continue to raise awareness about sea pollution and no doubt when I get home I’ll be on beaches clearing them of plastics.” Last year Oly swam around the Isle of Wight in a record time. HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Town’s busy schedule Choral society on song by Lorraine Gibson Wimborne is in full celebratory mode with a long weekend planned to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The Minster will be garlanded in flowers, art and music and shop windows festooned with bunting and majestic paraphernalia. Parking will be free throughout much of the town where the streets will be filled with folk tunes and dancing as picnic tables are lined-up on the High Street ready for a communal lunch party. Proceedings begin with a grand proclamation by the town crier on the Minster Green at 2pm on the Thursday, informing the good burghers of the weekend-long jubilations ahead. That evening, at 8.30-

8.45pm, a procession will leave the square and travel through the streets bound for the lighting of the Wimborne Beacon and a 21-gun salute from the militia about an hour later. Saturday festivities include the Wimborne Community Theatre performing live in the streets from 2pm to 3pm and the icing on the celebratory cake is on Sunday with The BIG Jubilee Lunch. Staged on the High Street (with extra picnic areas on Minster Green and Willow Walk). All are invited - so pack your cucumber sarnies and thermos, or your bruschetta and bubbly and join in the historic toasting of Her Majesty. A full programme of events will also run at the Allendale Centre throughout the weekend. Visit allendale.org for more info..

Wimborne Choral Society will celebrate with a full programme that also features music composed for royal occasions. Parry’s I Was Glad (Psalm122) and Sir William Walton’s Crown Imperial will be just some of the highlights of a concert packed with well-loved works. The concert will be held in Wimborne’s Minster on Saturday, June 25, from 7.30pm. The choir will be led by musical director Christopher

Dowie and accompanied by organist Sam Hanson. Tickets are now on sale at Square Records, High St, Wimborne, or by contacting Sophie Milhofer at milhofer @talktalk.net or 01202 603569. HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Of Corgis, Coronations and Curries

A selection of right royal reads for you

by Lorraine Gibson Pull up a throne, grab a cuppa (served in your best china, of course) and settle down with one of these regal titles recommended by Gulliver’s Bookshop, Dorset. The Diamond Queen, Elizabeth II: The Last Great Queen by Andrew Marr In this revised and updated version of The diamond Queen, complete with well-timed shiny, new chapter, Marr’s trademark meticulous research gives great insight into the Queen’s role at the heart of the state - which happens largely out of the public gaze - and makes a case for the institution. He dissects her political relationships with her Prime Ministers; examines her role as Head of the Commonwealth and analyses changes in the media and how the monarchy has adapted to it. In the additional chapter he asks: ‘what does the future hold for the House of Windsor?’ and sets out to answer it, covering the Queen’s reign from Diamond Jubilee to her Platinum one, taking in the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles’s future plans and Elizabeth II’s lasting legacy en route.

The Queen: 101 Reasons to Celebrate Her Majesty by E. Dunne & H. Sutcliffe Did you know that Her Majesty has established a completely new dog breed - the dorgi - a cross between a corgi and a dachshund and has given out more than 75,000 Christmas puddings? Just some of the facts in this lighthearted book that considers Elizabeth II, from her impact on 21st-century politics, to her ‘superhuman’ ability to keep waving. Oh, and her head-turning collection of headscarves.

Beautiful illustrations and humorous observations make it a jolly celebration of the woman already considered one of the greatest of all time. Lilibet: The Girl Who Would Be Queen by A. N. Wilson On Bognor Beach, with Grandpa England, Lilibet had known that he, and Papa, and then she, would carry something on - something bigger than themselves. We meet her as a carefree child and a lover of horses and dogs who is devoted to her family. And the girl who would be Queen. Read about how she discovers, aged ten, that she is heir to the throne, how she meets her prince (Phillip of Greece) and her sense of vocation and public duty, which grew in shadow of the Second World War and through her father’s subsequent years of ill health.

The Platinum Jubilee Cookbook by Ameer Kotecha The 19th century British Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston once declared that ‘dining is the soul of diplomacy’ and this unique book, celebrating the Queen’s 70-yearreign, presents 70 recipes from British embassies and high commissions around the world. With a foreword by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, it brings together recipes – many served during Royal Visits – that are intrinsically British, influenced by the host countries, or a fusion of both, including: Spanish Marmalade, from the Madrid embassy Green Fish Curry, from the Islamabad high commission Jollof Rice, from the Abuja high commission

Mince Spies, from ‘C’, Chief of MI6 Cardamom Lamb, from the New Delhi high commission Chicken Wellington, from the Lisbon embassy Toffee Apple and Rhubarb Crumble, from Chevening House Whisky-laced Bread & Butter Pudding, from the Washington D.C. embassy The often sumptuous dishes are garnished with tales of culinary diplomacy in action with not a Ferrero Rocher in sight! Kotecha has mined the Foreign Office archives to reveal the good, the bad and the entertaining of diplomatic dinner party anecdotes – and reveals how nations break bread to resolve differences, often reaching the negotiating table via the dinner table. HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Waggy tales

Residents get ready to party!

Preparations are under way for a host of fun at care homes in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset with residents keen to celebrate the Queen’s historic Platinum Jubilee. The bunting will be out and the flags will be flying during ‘street parties’ at all Colten Care homes over the specially extended Bank Holiday weekend. Staff have been busy sprucing up gardens, making decorations, knitting royaltythemed tea cosies, rehearsing songs to

perform and planning games. At The Aldbury in Poole, resident Joyce Holden, above, took on the challenge of colouring in 70 Union Jacks to mark the 70 years of the Queen’s reign. The flags will be placed as bunting around the dementia care home and its garden. Joyce said: “I do love colouring and I’m looking forward to seeing them all strung together for our Jubilee garden party.”

In Jubilee month, happy hounds and wet noses will be order of the day as Waggy Tails Rescue hosts its annual dog show at Pelhams, Kinson, on June 18. The hard-working Waggy’s team are appealing to readers to support them in raising the much-needed funds that enable them to continue with their amazing work finding homes for dogs. They’re also in need of more doggy foster homes, so if you’d like some four-legged companionship, are at home most of the time, have a secure garden, no children under 10 and are experienced with dogs, then why not give them a call to discuss fostering? Waggy Tails Rescue is a registered Dorset charity that rehomes dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or are otherwise needing a new place to live. To learn more call 01202 875000, or visit waggytails.org.uk.

A trolley good show for Queen’s Jubilee Bournemouth Coastal BID and Yellow Buses have formed a partnership that will see all-day network mobile app tickets cut from £8.20 to just 70p during the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend. To celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne, the BID will also decorate a Yellow Buses’ double-decker, which will be revealed before the first bank holiday on Thursday. The partnership will help drive people to the Coastal BID’s three major trading areas of Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne, and take cars off the road. Yellow Buses, which marks its 120th anniversary this year, has celebrated every one of the Queen’s landmark occasions from her Coronation in 1953. It also made huge statements for other major events including the Coronation of her Father George VI in 1937, pictured right. David Squire, managing director of the company, said: “We have a long tradition of marking national occasions. “This Jubilee is a huge event and partnering with the Coastal BID makes total sense as our areas overlap.

ALL ABOARD: A decorated trolley bus in 1937 for the Coronation of King George VI

“We want everyone to get out over the weekend and cutting network prices to just 70p – 1p for every year her Majesty has been Queen – seemed fitting. “There are codes available to claim the discount that can be found across the Coastal BID’s social media platforms. “The codes are limited to the first 70 people who use them each day, and

there is only one per person. The offer is available via the Yellow Buses app.” Fiona McArthur from the Coastal BID said: “For every full double-decker bus an estimated 75 cars are off the roads. “The 70p tickets will enable people to travel around the network, explore what is on their doorstep and enjoy all the entertainment and activities.”

by Lorraine Gibson Soldiers from the Royal School of Signals at Blandford Forum have helped to improve a poignant Dorset memorial at the nearby former Tarrant Rushton airfield that played an important and secret role in the Second World War. On the Tarrant valley to Witchampton road at Windy Corner, near Hogstock, the stone memorial will be 40 this summer, after being unveiled on June 6, 1982 – the 38th anniversary of D-Day, 1944 as the last of the airfield was being demolished. The help from the Jerboa Troop of the 11th Signal Regiment’s 4 (Military Training) Squadron came as the small, dedicated team of volunteers who help maintain the stone memorial appeal for more volunteers and donations to carry on their work. Brave young RAF aircrews flew dangerous low-flying missions in Halifax bombers deep into occupied Europe during 1944 and 1945 – dropping secret agents, SAS troops, arms and equipment to the Resistance forces. Tarrant Rushton’s Halifax squadrons also played an important role in the crucial D-Day, Arnhem and Rhine Crossing invasions of France, the Netherlands and Germany that saw the bombers tow wooden troop-carrying Horsa and tank-carrying Hamilcar gliders.

Honouring our young fliers A previous generation of soldiers flew in the gliders of those crucial operations as they operated radios to ensure communication between the many military elements of the invasion. Ten members of the Jerboa Troop of the 11th Signal Regiment’s 4 (Military Training) Squadron spent a morning at the memorial digging out the old gravel topping before laying a weed-proof plastic membrane and laying three tonnes of limestone chippings from the Suttle stone quarry at Worth Matravers. Bob Seymour - the son of an RAF navigator who flew dangerous missions in 1944 - is one of the dedicated volunteers who maintains the stone memorial by the former entrance gate. Bob said: “I brought my father back to Tarrant Rushton before he died aged in his 90s and he was very moved to see the memorial. “The soldiers from the Royal School of Signals tackled their task with military organisation and lots of enthusiasm. It was

great to meet them and chat about the history of Tarrant Rushton and its importance which should never be forgotten. “We are very grateful to the soldiers for giving their time so willingly and enthusiastically,” added Bob. John Nicholson, of the memorial group, explained: “The airfield was home to 3,000 men and women in the Second World War. “Built by the Wimpey construction company in just seven months at a cost of £1m – more than £40m in today’s money – RAF Tarrant Rushton opened in May 1943, and was home to two squadrons 298 and 644, which flew the large Halifax fourengined bomber. “The airfield was built to train crews in the dangerous towing of wooden troop-carrying Horsa and tank-carrying Hamilcar gliders not just for the ‘D-Day’ invasion of France, but also the invasion of Arnhem in 1944, and the crossing of the Rhine into Germany in March 1945. “Young crews also flew

dangerous low-level flights to drop secret agents from the Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.) into Occupied Europe – from the south of France to the Low Countries and up to Norway – to disrupt German military activities and help Resistance fighters,” added John who lives in Wimborne. After the RAF left in 1946, the following year saw the pioneering aviation research and manufacturing company Flight Refuelling move in – a tenant that would remain at the airfield for more than 30 years, until 1980 when the 300-acre site was closed. The airfield’s 300 buildings were demolished in 1981 with three large concrete runways broken up for hardcore material that was used in the building of the Wimborne bypass. Donations to the memorial fund can be made at gofundme.com/f/tarrantrushton-memorial-restoration. To volunteer to help maintain and improve the memorial, contact John Nicholson at jn7vmn@gmail.com or call 07905 346643.

Political round-up

Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher

A special gift from MPs to Her Majesty Congratulations on 70 glorious years to Her Majesty The Queen. What a joy it is to be able to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Services of thanksgiving, parades, beacons, street parties and family gatherings will ensure that this occasion of national pride is engraved on our hearts. It is most gratifying that the Jubilee coincides with the removal of all scaffolding from the Elizabeth Tower so that Big Ben can be revealed once again in all its splendour. Members of Parliament have paid for a special gift in honour of Her Majesty – a pair of ornate lamps sculpted in bronze on either side of the steps which lead from Westminster Hall with its Diamond Jubilee window to New Palace Yard where the Silver Jubilee Fountain is situated.

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP Public visits and tours to the House of Commons are now being resumed and I encourage readers to see for themselves what has been achieved. The new Session of Parliament, which began with the Queen’s Speech on May 10, has been interrupted for the Jubilee but is about to resume in earnest. The war in Ukraine, the challenge of rising energy

costs and their impact upon family budgets remain at the top of the agenda. My participation in the debate enabled me to restate the argument for lower taxes and less government. I expressed my concern that windfall taxes are both simplistic and damaging. Describing a tax as a windfall tax does not make it any less of a tax. Instead of flirting with the idea of ever-higher taxes, we need to encourage our oil and gas industry to invest, rather than disinvest in our economy. Instead of windfall taxes, the Government should be paying back to taxpayers some of the windfall receipts of tax revenue. VAT receipts are expected to be £9billion more this year than predicted. These could be used to scrap VAT and green levies on energy bills. I referred to the statement in the Queen’s

Speech that ‘Government will drive economic growth to improve living standards’. The emphasis needs to be on increasing productivity and reducing the overbloated Civil Service so that we can recover from the highest levels of taxation in a generation and with inflation raging at almost 10%. As chairman of the allparty parliamentary group on park homes, I took the opportunity to remind the Government that it has not fulfilled its commitment to introduce legislation to change from RPI to CPI the measure for calculating the maximum annual increase in charges for pitch fees for park home residents. The Government also has outstanding business to deal with the issue of rogue operators and complex company structures which bedevil so much of the park homes industry.

Was lethal delay due to drunk staff at No 10?

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The government has U-turned and implemented Labour’s policy of a windfall tax (sorry, ‘energy profits levy’) on oil and gas firms to fund relief on our energy bills. And to be fair to the Tories, they have actually gone further than Labour could get away with, by borrowing to provide additional support. Listen carefully and you can hear Richard Drax spitting teeth in South Dorset. The truth is there is little to separate the parties now on macro-economic policy or tax and spend. The Tories have come round to the centre ground with higher taxation to better fund public services. This provides an opportunity

to Labour. I would advocate we go into the next election promising to stay within Sunak’s tax and spend envelope, as Brown successfully did in 1997, neutralising the usual lazy attacks on our fiscal credibility. This windfall U-turn is symptomatic of a weak government that has run out of ideas, and for whom the agenda is set by a mixture of events, the opposition and a zealous commitment to culture war. Creating Daily Mailpandering dividing lines seems to be all they have left. I don’t know how our local MPs put up with it. The recent defence of parties as ‘work events’ is perverse - no one else was having work leaving dos in 2020.

Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS It just proves that with this government, its one rule for them, and one rule for the rest of us. Every week in the House it’s the same old show - a fading Prime Minister reduced to rattling off his old hits like an artist with no new material. ‘Got Brexit done’ – not a track that he plays in

Northern Ireland. ‘Worldbeating economic growth’ – another lie. And then that worn-out 45 ‘Fastest vaccine rollout’ with the B-side ‘179,000 Covid deaths’ that he’d rather we didn’t flip the record over to hear. The Sue Gray report – or just Sue, as Johnson referred to her in the Commons, betraying a familiarity which adds grist to the rumour mill she was leant upon by the PM in order to pull her punches – did clear one thing up. We know why the Government delayed implementing the second lockdown in October 2020, with the needless waste of thousands of extra lives. It’s because the staff at Number 10 were too drunk.

Nurses invited to develop careers Dorset HealthCare is inviting band 5 registered nurses to a one-off online event showcasing roles available at the Trust that will develop and shape their nursing career. Taking place on Tuesday, June 7, from 5-6.30pm, the event will provide information about vacancies on offer in district nursing and community hospital teams which provide vital services for local residents. The virtual event will allow potential new recruits to meet the Trust’s key nursing leads, find out about each hospital and community team,

discover how they can develop their career and ask questions – all from the comfort of their home. Anneka Moxom, inset, district nurse team lead for West Dorset, said: “The saying ‘do a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life’ is exactly how I feel working for Dorset HealthCare.” More information at dorsethealthcare. nhs.uk/work-for-us/band-5-nurses. Deadline to apply is Sunday, June 12.

‘Saying Goodbye’ Service at Minster Wimborne Minster is to hold a Saying Goodbye Service for people affected by the loss of a baby in pregnancy or early years. The services are open to people of all faiths or none, whenever they lost their baby. Friends, family and children are welcome, along with people who have lost babies through miscarriage, IVF, or even those who have never been able to have

children, say organisers, the Saying Goodbye charity. A spokesman said: “Grief is sadly a lifelong journey, but how we carry that grief can truly change how we live our lives.” The service takes place on Sunday July 10 from 3.30pm-4.30pm with doors open from 45 minutes prior to the start. For more information contact saying goodbye.org/services.

Citizens Advice says thanks to volunteers

Citizens Advice in East Dorset & Purbeck has seen a huge number of enquiries from people struggling to stay on top of bills. Thanks to its volunteers and staff, Citizens Advice has continued to give essential advice and crisis support. As part of Volunteers’ Week, which runs until June 7, Citizens Advice is thanking its volunteers for their exceptional contribution to the charity and local community. No less than 51 volunteers contribute 301 hours each week and in the past year have helped nearly 5,000 people with more than 16,000 problems, such as debt, housing, benefit and employment issues. Carol, volunteer adviser for more than three years, said: “Knowing you’ve helped an individual or a family to move forward with their lives is very rewarding.” Chief officer Helen Goldsack said: “We have an incredible team of volunteers who freely give their time and skills to ensure residents get support in their time of need.” To find out more about volunteering visit: edpcitizensadvice.org.uk or contact mandi. douglas@edpcitizensadvice.org.uk. Full training and support is provided. For free advice, call the Adviceline on 0800 144 8848 or visit edpcitizensadvice.org.uk.

Lottery funds return of support group The popular family support group run by Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, has returned thanks to funding from the National Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund. The fortnightly sessions are a chance for parents to enjoy some refreshments and have a chat with others in similar situations to themselves. The sessions alternate between a coffee morning held at the Families Centre in West Moors and a chance to take part in an activity in the local area, such as a walk along the beach, afternoon tea or pamper sessions. There will also be parent training sessions from professionals to support parents and carers to understand their child’s additional needs. Clare Rochford, the children’s team manager, said: “We are so pleased to finally welcome back families, as well as meet new ones. “These sessions are a chance to meet other parents and carers in a safe and welcoming environment. As well as opportunities to just have a chat, there will be themed sessions to help

parents with specific issues such as deputyships, will with trusts, benefit applications and more.” A parent who attended a recent session said: “It was great to meet up with other parents. I really appreciated this relaxing, different kind of day. “Enjoying a delicious cream tea, followed by a walk along the beach was the perfect combination.”

The sessions are open to parents and carers of any child with a disability and have proved to be a vital service to discuss issues and build a support network. Visit diverseabilities.org.uk/ familysupport for more information about the Family Support sessions and other ways that Diverse Abilities support the whole family.

Music to collectors’ ears OLD PICTURE POSTCARDS This Victorian Swiss music box is estimated to sell for £2,000-£3,000 in the Charterhouse June 9 and 10 two-day collectors’ auction,. “Music boxes really were a luxury only the wealthy owned in the 19th century.” said Richard Bromell. The Swiss music box is fitted in an inlaid walnut table cabinet. It plays 36 airs or tunes on six interchangeable cylinders, with the last song on the sixth cylinder rather appropriately being Auld Lang Syne. With an imminent house move the owners decided to let a new owner enjoy it. Say hello and wave goodbye to ‘lonely’

by Lorraine Gibson Loneliness has many faces. The solitary child on the bench watching classmates at play; the teenager in their bedroom with no one to talk to; the bereaved, the divorced, the shy . . . However, isolation isn’t always obvious and can be felt by anyone, even when surrounded by friends and family. And as Dorset faces increasing health problems with loneliness a contributing factor, support and positivity have never been more essential. Louise Deeprose, a mentalhealth peer support worker from Dorset and Keith Grinsted, founder of Goodbye Lonely, a virtual hub devoted to combatting loneliness, have both experienced debilitating loneliness. They’re now on a mission to stop other people suffering in silence. Louise said: “Growing up, at times I felt so down and had thoughts that I didn’t want to be alive anymore. “Adults didn’t know how to help, some didn’t want to hear. I felt alone, and that my feelings weren’t real.” She began experiencing physical symptoms of anxiety: ‘Shortness of breath, racing heart, sweating. I withdrew from friends and family.” Her negative thoughts intensified. A turning point came when a family member suggested Steps2Wellbeing mental health services. “I never thought I was ‘bad enough’ or worthy of a professional’s time,” says Louise, “but finally, someone listened. “My feelings were validated. It helped me change my life.” Now Louise shares her

experiences with others who use the service. For Keith, feeling alone inspired him to help others, too. “Loneliness can hit you for a couple of hours or days, weeks or months. Often, people don’t realise they’re lonely. “You can be walking along a beach, at ease with the world or in a room surrounded by people and feel totally lonely. “I found the time between seven and nine in the evening the loneliest. It felt as if everybody else was busy with their families and you’re on your own.” Fed up, Keith agreed to talk to BBC Breakfast about it and was flooded with enquiries, so he set up Goodbye Lonely. “We have a Facebook group, a website, a WhatsApp group and weekly Zoom calls. “I offer one-to-one calls any time, day or night.” He adds: “We set up 30 Zoom calls leading up to Christmas and New Year and set up telephone buddies for people to connect with people who can help. “One individual, on the

verge of suicide, had serious challenges in their life, one being a drinking problem. “We had conversations and set up a group with myself and someone who’d lost their partner through

alcoholism. “We established ‘Dry September’ and touched base daily.” It worked. “Now they’re posting online how they’ve saved £80 a week by not drinking.”

Health & Wellbeing I’ve got your back... We spend so much time sitting at desks or looking at our phones that our posture is really suffering. I see many clients with neck and shoulder pain but it seems to be becoming more common as people get back to their normal jobs and old desks. Even if you’re still working from home, don’t forget to make time to stop, get up from your desk/kitchen table and have a stretch or a little walk. If you drive for a living or you’re preparing for a long drive for a holiday, stopping for breaks and stretching out the legs and lower back are key for keeping lower back, hip and leg pain at bay. Lower back pain affects 40% of the population and costs about £5billion (or £200 for every employee) in sickness absence costs, according to the Clinical Standards Advisory Group. That’s a lot of people and a lot of time off work. Maybe you’re already in pain and it’s affecting you in everyday life, perhaps you’re

struggling to play with the grandkids or even just putting your shoes and socks on is a struggle. Keeping muscles active and mobilised will help to keep things moving. As the saying goes, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it! In most cases of back pain, soft tissue damage is a big factor. Muscles, ligaments and fascia can be affected by repetitive misuse or injury, trauma or poor posture. As these ‘soft tissue issues’ cannot be diagnosed via Xrays or MRIs they often

escape the medics’ attention leading to unnecessary longstanding pain that can in most cases easily be resolved with Clinical Massage Techniques. Massage is not just for relaxation and it shouldn’t be seen as something to do just for a treat or a pamper. Of course massage does have an element of relaxation and for some of us, that’s just what is needed - time out to switch off and really relax. Relaxation is always incorporated into my massage treatments because the more relaxed your body is the more it will respond to treatment and feel the benefits. When it comes to remedial or clinical massage there are a number of techniques that I can use to relieve aches and pains as well as giving homecare. People often think they need one type of massage technique or it has to be a ‘sports massage’ or ‘deep tissue’ for example but actually I incorporate a wide range of massage skills and

It’s often believed that massage has to be deep or hurt to gain any benefit but this is not true. It’s not about going deep but about how you go deep. Thanking those cloudy arteries I read an autobiography recently of a well-known comedian and was struck by a paragraph where he humbly thanked his ‘cloudy arteries’ for the gift of openheart surgery. He stated that, without which, he would never have grown as a person and that with all the ‘heart nonsense’, he had become more rounded, enthusiastic, and had ‘found himself.’ Christopher Reeve (aka Superman), following his life-changing accident, invested in spinal research which gave him a purpose and meaning to his life. accident, the person who collided with his vehicle ended up becoming a client. Personally, an illness gave me the opportunity to reconnect with myself and ultimately led to a career that is now my passion and purpose. It amazes me how, even in the direst, life-altering circumstances, we can be granted a gift, an opportunity or a chance to reflect. At the time, the world seems to have ended, and we may ask ourselves: ‘why me?’ And I appreciate that in some cases it is nigh-on impossible to find a slither of light in the darkness. But how often have you experienced truly awful things, yet somewhere in the

midst of the heartache you found a piece of goodness, an act of kindness, a new connection, a realisation, a realigning of yourself? How often have you had one of those days or one of those weeks, when everything seems to hit you at once? You can be up and all together on Monday but down and lost on Thursday. I was once told of a parable called ‘The Stallion’ that suggests that we don’t always know what is good and what is bad when we are in the depths of a situation. It seems that often, it is only after time has passed, when emotions have been processed, that we can rationally see what is there for us.

Almost as if there is something far greater at play, that we just aren’t aware of until a later date. Perhaps it is comforting for us to think that there just may be the tiniest of gifts when all seems lost, to offer some hope and optimism. As Desmond Tutu said, ‘hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.’

Health & Wellbeing By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com One of the challenges I face in working with new clients is enabling them to let go of the unhelpful beliefs that have been holding them back. For instance, beliefs such as: I am powerless over my anxiety I need cigarettes to feel calm I can’t get on that aeroplane I must have something sweet after every meal. The thoughts we have create feelings and behaviours, so when those thoughts are unhelpful ones, the behaviours that arise can have a negative impact on our life. It’s not the thought of an aeroplane that causes fearful thoughts - it’s the belief you have about what might happen while you are on that aeroplane. As a result of this belief you

Challenging unhelpful beliefs

may experience a typical fear response such as heart palpitations and dizziness, and you may begin to avoid flying entirely. All of our responses come from our beliefs, and our beliefs come from our experience of life - whether actual, observed or anecdotal. Unhelpful beliefs tend to be irrational, and might include very specific demands that we impose on ourself.

Words such as Can’t, Must, Need or Should are very common. These demands are typically very inflexible and absolute. Helpful beliefs are much more flexible and come from rational thoughts. They tend to be preferences, allowing for different outcomes and the fact that nothing is an absolute. Our responses to our beliefs become automatic over time - so if the response comes from an unhealthy belief it’s important to challenge the thoughts creating it. One way of doing this is to examine the evidence that the person presents themself with to uphold their belief. This can be done through questions which ask them to consider: Is this helpful? How does it help you to believe this? Is this real? Where is the evidence for this?

Does this make sense? How logical is your belief? These questions open up the possibility of considering other explanations or ways of looking at a situation, which begins to lead towards the formulation of new, more helpful beliefs. Using hypnotherapy I can then help my client mentally rehearse these new outcomes, seeing themselves behaving differently in the situations that would have once caused them problems. The client also has an important role to play in creating the change they seek - they must continue to challenge their unhelpful thoughts so that over time they create a new, more appropriate automatic response. Changing a belief may seem impossible at first, but with the right approach is can turn out to be surprisingly easy.

Find time to change your life Have you ever thought or said: ‘I’ll start exercising/ eating better when I’ve more time’? This is one of the biggest health fallacies we tell ourselves. Are we going to be significantly less busy in the future? At what point? Maybe one day we’ll have less responsibilities, but I can almost guarantee we’ll fill up our time again with new priorities. The days, weeks, years will pass by whether we do or don’t make changes. The real challenge isn’t lack of time but creating some time in our current life now. There is rarely a magic period when we suddenly have an empty diary and heaps of motivation to change. The good news is that blocking out huge chunks of time isn’t necessary either.

Instead, let’s focus instead on making small tweaks to our current life. Improving our diet can be as simple as 3,2,1 – drinking 3 glasses of water, eating 2 pieces of fruit and having 1 main salad or vegetable dish each day. Getting started with exercise is as easy as going for a short daily walk. How can we fit even 10 minutes into our daily life? First thing in the morning now the days are light? parking our car further away from our destination, meeting a friend or a colleague for a walk and talking? Perhaps a walk around the block before or after our evening meal. Starting to build upper body strength can be as simple as 10 push ups a day (start standing, leaning against

a wall before gradually progressing to incline or floor based versions). Doing this takes less than one minute (I know as I do these daily). Perhaps try while waiting for the kettle to boil. The time will pass anyway. Do this every day for a week (that’s 70 push ups), and you’ll have done 300 push ups in a month. Think of the strength benefits of doing this for less than 1 minute a day, over a year, over a lifetime, compared to not doing anything. There are real benefits to fitting healthy habits into our life when we’re busy. If we do them now, we’re more likely to stick to them. If (and when) we do have more time, we can scale up. Our health and fitness are a long game, over our lifetime. Long term results and

Cooking... Vegetable Dahl, with Flatbreads Those of you who have been reading my column will know that we like to travel. One of our favourite destinations is India. This curry, although not from India, reminds me of the times we have been there. I think it’s the smell that envokes the memories. Making the flatbreads that go with it brings back two memories. One is when we went to Turkey and had our lunch in a cave that was used for the Star Wars film. Before lunch we watched a lady making flat bread and I assisted by grinding down the flour. Another time we were in Sri Lanka on a trip to a small, recreated village. This time I was allowed to knead the flatbread before we cooked it. We were then invited to eat them, Martin declined having seen the state of the kitchen! Both times, I imagined myself

until onion has softened. Add garam masala and curry leaves cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in lentils, tomatoes, stock and pumpkin and bring to a simmer. Put in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours 30 minutes (or low for 5 hours). Stir in chickpeas, kidney beans and peas and cook, covered, on high for a further 10 minutes or until heated through. Season with salt and pepper.

Method Stir together the flour and salt. Add 5–6 tablespoons of lukewarm water with the oil. Using your hands, bring the dough together into a ball. Knead for 5–10 minutes, wrap in cling film, rest for 20 minutes. Cut into four portions and roll into small balls. Roll out each ball until around 18cm diameter, around 2–3mm thick on a dusted work surface. Dry-fry over a medium heat for 20 seconds, pressing lightly with a spatula. Flip over and cook on the other side for 20 seconds, or until the tortilla is cooked, but remains soft and pliable.

Make the most of a special weekend Jubilant June! A wonderful start to the month is promised, with many outdoor celebrations planned for Her Majesty, and an extra day of holiday for some, means some lovely time to be outdoors. If you are wondering what you can do in the garden this weekend or indeed in the whole month, fear not, I can give you some ideas! Start deadheading flowers! As the summer plants begin to flower, particularly herbaceous, bedding plants and roses, regularly deadhead them to ensure you continue to get repeat and prolific flowering. You can also prune spring flowering shrubs if you haven’t yet. Camellias, rhododendrons (if they have finished flowering), azaleas, choisya, etc, all can be pruned now rather than later to keep the shape and size but not damage next year’s buds. Sow and grow lupins If any of you have been following Chelsea Flower Show you will have seen the trend for lupins. They are indeed a stately plant and look great in a cottage garden scheme or anywhere where a bit of height and pop of colour is needed. Keep the slugs at bay when they first emerge and they are easy to sow and grow. Lupins are sun-lovers, so give them a warm, open, bright position. They also like

well-drained or even poor soil that is slightly acidic, so they are ideal for the soil in the majority of this area of Ferndown and West Moors. If you sow seed in early June, you will get a small plant that will carry through to next year when it will be much more established and ready to go. You might also get a late flower show. Happily, most lupins also come true from seed too, so if you buy a plant and save the seed at the end of the season you can sow and make more plants next spring! Lupins can also be used as part of the vegetable rotations – like other legumes, they can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere into ammonia (nitrogen) via a bacterium– root nodule symbiosis, fertilizing the soil for other plants. This allows lupins to be tolerant of infertile soils and capable of pioneering change in barren and poor-quality soils, and the flowers can

be used for cutting whilst feeding your vacant plot! Don’t cut those hedges! Please please reconsider cutting hedges at this time of year. The birds are still actively nesting and raising young, and easily abandon nests and young if disturbed. Nests which become exposed are also much more prone to predation and to colder winds and hot sun which could harm young birds. If you absolutely must trim a hedge, it is an offence to intentionally disturb nests, and a check for nesting birds is strongly advised. Unfortunately, I have heard of an instance where, despite a thorough check, a nest was missed and sadly a chick suffered from the tools. Blackspot on roses Keep an eye out for black spot on roses and remove damaged leaves as soon as possible. I have had success with a couple of products

(no affiliation or commission paid!) – Uncle Toms Rose Tonic which if you buy from the Rose Society means they benefit from your purchase, and SB Plant Invigorator. SB PI is based on natural soapbased ingredients, and is an environmentally-friendly and economical way of controlling a wide range of rose pest species including whitefly, aphid, spider mite, etc, by physical means. It is not absorbed by the plant nor a threat to bees unless sprayed on them directly. It also helps prevent powdery mildew and is a plant stimulant so will help plants to become resilient to attacks. Uncle Toms is a foliar feed and root drench for resilient plants, and an environmentally-friendly way to protect against black spot and mildew. Finish cropping asparagus by the end of the month Asparagus needs to be allowed to grow a few spears to enable it to re-feed itself ready for next year. You can continue to crop rhubarb until end of July however so rhubarb crumble is still on the menu! Keep ponds topped up Use rainwater ideally to top up ponds and water sources for wildlife and your fish if you have them. Keeping the ponds topped up is essential for wildlife access and oxygen and heat management in the summer.

Struggles with strawberries Strawberries are the first berries of the year. Drenched by cream and sugar, shopbought ones can ‘pass muster’ but there’s nothing like growing your own. And I do mean ‘nothing’ as we are not the only creatures on this Earth who count down the days for the strawberry to be fat and sweet! Last year I tried laying pine needles as a replacement for straw, having read the smell

watching Wimbledon. To that end I planted up a strawberry pot and put it very close to the back door to discourage birds. After the time of strawberries I intend to replant the pot with succulents. Lastly, there is a beautiful chapter on strawberries in Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass.

Education Pupils from Merley First School in Wimborne experienced what it is like to be ministers, shadow ministers and backbenchers during a visit from their local MP The Year 3 pupils invited Michael Tomlinson, Conservative MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, to visit them to discuss a project they had conducted in their geography and English studies. The children had been tasked with exploring the geographical hypothesis ‘The quality of the environment improves closer to Delph Woods.’ During a visit to the woodland, which is close to their school, they evaluated five environmental criteria at two points along the way. The children found that the environment does indeed improve the closer you get to the forest space, with less litter and more plant life and

‘MPQs’ for schoolchildren

animal habitats. They also linked their findings to their English work by producing an information leaflet to inspire others to visit the woods. The children sent congratulations to the council’s forest wardens, whom they met on the trip and also to their local MP, Michael Tomlinson, who sent back his own

congratulations and accepted an invitation into school. Mr Tomlinson entertained the children by dividing them into opposing sides of the House of Commons and explained how MPs chair motions, answer questions and vote. Inviting them to enter into a ‘parliamentary’ debate on something they had learned about the woods, he acted

as Speaker and encouraged them to vote on whether bins should be installed at the beauty spot. Headteacher Katharine Anstey said: “The children greatly enjoyed Mr Tomlinson’s visit. We had discussed his role as an MP in much detail before his visit and the children had prepared some very intelligent questions.”

Bewitching time for young sculptors Witchampton First School pupils were invited into the fabulous gardens of Abbey House, Witchampton. The owners, Mr & Mrs Hodges, invited Year 1 and 2 children to the Grade-II* listed property which was originally built in the early 16th century and is thought to be the first brick-built house in Dorset. The children were totally inspired and were particularly excited to see the remains of mediaeval

buildings, that up until recently had been buried under an overgrowth of ivy. The gardens are also home to some amazing sculptures, many of which were designed and created by the owner herself. The visit enabled the children to observe and sketch the many sculptures within the gardens before coming back to school to make their own clay sculptures.

Duncan set to take on 100k coast run Duncan Ross from Christchurch Rugby Club is taking on an epic challenge in June by running 100km through the night along the Jurassic Coast, in aid of LewisManning Hospice Care and Clean Jurassic Coast. The challenge will start at 8pm on June 11 in Weymouth and finish in Exmouth. Southbourne-based Duncan who is a teacher and also the Community Lead at Christchurch RFC said: “The club chose Lewis-Manning as their nominated charity partner for the 2021/22 season and that is why I have decided to complete this challenge for them, as well as Clean Jurassic Coast, both causes very close to my heart. “I have seen first-hand

the amazing work that hospices do. My wonderful step-dad Glyn was cared for by one in his last few weeks, so this is very personal to me and my family. “I spend a lot of time on the Jurassic Coast and am a big believer in eco and going green. I enjoy doing organised Clean Jurassic Coast beach cleans with my daughter, Pips, and we’re incredibly proud to be a part of this and making a difference, helping to preserve the planet for future generations. “I shall be undertaking the challenge with a good, long-time friend Nelly.” Donations can be made via Duncan’s Just Giving Page bit.ly/37yqBRA.

Music ‘for the people by the people’

Pic: WIMBORNEFOLK.CO.UK

by Lorraine Gibson It began as a one-day event for lovers of traditional music and dance just as the 1970s became the ’80s but so popular was Wimborne’s folk festival, it quickly evolved into a weekend-long affair. Now the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival is a full-on annual weekender, running from Friday to Sunday, June 10 to 12, and in 2019 a record-breaking 70,000 people gathering to join in the merrymaking, made it one of the largest events of its kind in the south of England. The organisers are delighted to be back for the 40th Anniversary after pandemic disruptions and

have an impressive line-up guaranteed to have folky toes tapping from start to finish. Its heady blend of dance teams, activities, booze and musicians will fill the (closedoff) streets near the ancient Minster as the whole town comes alive with melodies, comedy, concerts and ceilidhs, workshops, displays, street markets and family areas. Eclectic is the byword here, with headline concerts in the Allendale Centre, a microbrewery in a car park and a comedy show at the Tivoli Theatre, starring comedy poet, Les Barker and

the Polly Morris Band. In a nod to the important role art played in helping many people cope with lockdowns, there’s also a new display of creative works throughout Allendale House. For kids, entertainment includes Circus Wessex, shows with cool puppets and ‘Mad 4 Animals’. Acts come from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and even Canada, with awardwinning Welsh Folk Band Calan headlining Sunday evening and raising the roof with their sparkling, foottapping tunes and spirited performances of Welsh Step Dancing.

Village gardens open up

Gardens (including those of the Manor House) will be open in the attractive Dorset village of Hinton St Mary, right, on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19, from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. Afternoon teas and cakes will be served in the Tithe Barn and there will be stalls selling plants, along with collectables and secondhand books.

There will also be an exhibition of old Hinton, showing the village as it was in days gone by. Tickets are £6.00 for adults (valid for both days), and accompanied children go free. Parking is available, including provision for disabled. Sorry, no dogs. For more details, email: johnstone.ytc@btinternet.com.

Saturday evening sees the joyous combination of Merry Hell - ‘music by the people for the people’ and Megson, a fresh folk duo known for their thought-provoking pieces. Check out the other artists Charlie Dore, Reg Meuross, Tinderbox, Ranagri, Fly Yeti Fly, Janet Dowd, Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer and Kim Edgar and try to catch the raft of emerging artists and local musicians. With 10 stages and 60 dance sides, hundreds of acts scheduled across the weekend and for all ages, the only dilemma will be how to see them all! Tickets £65 for the weekend from: wmff.co.uk.

Heaven for Hardy fans By Faith Eckersall Fans of Thomas Hardy are in for a summer treat as no less than four local museums are holding co-ordinated exhibitions, examining four important aspects of his work. Until the end of October, fans can visit Dorchester, Poole, Salisbury and Devizes to hear the story of the poet and novelist, amidst the Wessex landscapes which shaped his view. Dorset Museum in Dorchester is exploring Hardy’s views on social tensions and animal welfare. Despite his national acclaim, Hardy never lost touch with the working-class lives and poverty of rural Dorset and the museum is using paintings, writing, costume and drawings to bring his writing to life. A highlight will be the Village Choir painting by Thomas Webster, which provides a snapshot of the musicians Hardy grew up with and wrote about. Hardy had family pets and was also deeply concerned about animal welfare, becoming friends with early animal rights activists. He wrote to the newspapers to protest against

performing animals and wrote poems criticising blood sports. Poole Museum will examine Hardy’s relationship with the coastlines which inspired his writing – from first meeting his wife, Emma, to his fascination with the Napoleonic wars. Among the exhibits will be the handwritten notebook for The Trumpet-Major, complete with scribbles and sketches. Visitors can also see the 1816 artwork Weymouth Bay by John Constable. The Salisbury exhibition uncovers his links with the city and his views on religion and feminism. Hardy’s sisters attended a teacher training college based in the King’s House, now the museum which inspired an episode in Jude The Obscure. At Devizes, the theme is Ancient Wessex - Superstition and old beliefs. The museum is well-placed to investigate how Hardy’s writing merged his present with the past. Among the exhibits will be his hand-annotated copy of Einstein’s new theories and his Book Of Facts, in which he recorded old beliefs and superstitions.

Enjoy a couple of celebration tipples Planning your Platinum Jubilee celebrations? Wimborne Wine Society can help with five superb suggestions for toasting the Queen. Her Majesty’s favourite cocktail is a real classic. After a long day of waving and smiling and repeatedly asking ‘and where do you come from?’ – the Queen enjoys a Dubonnet and gin before her dinner. Mix two parts of Dubonnet to one part of gin, pour over ice and add a slice of lemon. If you’ve not tried Wimborne’s local Minster Gin, give it a go. Available from Wimborne’s East Street Deli. Tip: Keep the bottles in the fridge. Kir Royale is another great aperitif with royal overtones. Originally, cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) was mixed with

mediocre white wine but this combination has been transformed to a regal sipper by using Prosecco. It would be a tragedy even in the Palace to use top-rate champagne. A tablespoon of liqueur in every glass of fizz is recommended but most people find that too sweet. Play around and get your favourite mix. Tip: Experiment with mure or peche liqueurs to enliven an excellent bargain Organic Prosecco from Aldi. (£7.99) Dinner is served and time for the royal wines. Acknowledging her German ancestry, Elizabeth II is partial to a German Reisling - Leitz Dragonstone Reisling 2018 (£16.99) from New Forest Wines in Ringwood is a good introduction. Tip: This wine is worth keeping for a couple of years and letting it breathe is a must – the best way is to decant it.

Push the boat out with a stunning German red: Fritz Wassmer Spatburgunder 2015 (£50). A splendid wine, both hearty and elegant, with fine tannins and great complexity. A delight. Tip: This wine is perfect with red meats, vegetarian lasagne and a cheese board. Highly recommend the aptly named Clemency Hall Victorious Jubilee - delicious vintage cheddar available from the

town’s East Street Deli. If you can lay your hands on one of these beauties, you will be celebrating like royalty. Balassa Tokaji 2010 (£35 for 500ml) is fabulous. Tokaji was described by Louis IV as ‘the wine of kings and the king of wines’. And how right he was: deep gold, intense, complex with a long finish of creamy sweet spices. A treat! Tip: Any Tokaji is good and remember you do get what you pay for. Make sure it’s cold and save it for yourself! Wimborne Wine Society meets at the CLaRC Centre in Wimborne the first Wednesday of each month. It aims to promote the enjoyment and knowledge of wine by sampling six different wines each meeting, with members often bringing along nibbles. Everyone is welcome. Visit: wimbornewinesociety.org.

Summer celebrations begin ‘Celebrate’ is the buzz word at the Museum of East Dorset this summer, writes Sharon Sutcliffe, and we have a whole host of exciting activities in store for families in the coming months that form part of our new exhibition – East Dorset Celebrates: 70 Years of Fun and Festivities. The fun starts in May half term when children can join us for Platinum Jubilee-themed crafts, stories and garden trail at Little Explorer’s Corgis and Crowns, and we have the return of our popular Family Art Picnic with this year’s artist in residence, Yvonne Perks. In addition, Yvonne will be at the museum every Friday morning from 10am-12.30pm throughout June and July to help us ‘Celebrate Nature’. She will be using the garden and all its furry and feathered visitors to inspire her artwork. It’s a great opportunity for any budding artists to ask her for any top tips!

Be sure to pick up our brand-new Summer Trail with your museum entrance ticket, then make a pit stop at the Craft Zone to create your own piece of bunting which will adorn our Entrance Gallery over the jubilee week. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. Happy 10th birthday High Mead Farm! With Jubilee celebrations under way in practically every corner of the county, it would be easy to overlook High Mead’s own anniversary achievement; this month the Farm is officially 10 years old! When I quizzed founder Mark Gregory about how it all started, he was keen to thank everyone who has supported the farm since its inception. However, it soon became clear the acknowledgements could have filled an entire issue, so it was simply not practical to thank everyone Mark feels indebted to. The huge number of stoic supporters of High Mead, its sponsors and the volunteers who are still helping it all these years later, demonstrates how highly the farm is regarded, and for that Electric propagator, galvanised cold frame and 2 small portable greenhouses and 3 long trays Verwood 07816 540868 £30. we are immensely grateful. One of the most frequent farm-related questions I get asked is how it came to be and why? In short, it was a project born out of passion and opportunity. Mark became intrigued by the practically-delict farm after it was vacated by Bournemouth and Poole College who had used it as a community training farm, much as it is today. By his own admission, Mark ‘let himself in’ to have a look around and was inspired by what he saw and excited about the opportunity it afforded, despite it being in a somewhat sorry state. Will, Mark’s business partner at the time, had a brother who worked for the NHS and a nephew (Tom) whose learning difficulties meant it was a struggle to find the lad something to do once he’d left school. Mark thought

the farm would make an ideal environment to teach Will’s nephew important skills. Mark was so taken with the High Mead, that he talked Will into starting their own community farm and approached the landlord,

Jeremy Trehane with the idea. Mark and Will, supported by two volunteers, both of whom still volunteer at the farm, prepared the site ready to welcome those who were so keen to support; a project

Town is a-buzz with good news Pictures: TIFFANY FLEMING

of some undertaking! From the tales I’ve been told, I think it’s fair to say that the early days at the farm were a tad bohemian. There are stories of festivals and weddings, three-day long parties and antics that are perhaps best kept for another day. However, over the years, Mark learned much. The farm focused more on learning and opportunity; but the essence of the ‘community of freedom’ that

he began with, still exists today, and is, I believe, what makes the farm the special place it is. Ten years on, High Mead supports up to 70 people a month, enabling them to build friendships, gain confidence, and learn new skills. That’s 10 years of changing lives and making a difference, and is truly an achievement to be celebrated.

by Faith Eckersall Community group Wilding Wimborne are buzzing with excitement as the town has just been awarded Bee Friendly Town status by the Bee Friendly Trust. Wilding Wimborne has been working hard to increase the pollinators in the town, helping at a local level to reverse devastating decline. “It’s been a real team effort,” says chairman Linda Bunting. “We’ve made and installed 11 bee homes and we’re immensely grateful to so many people.”

Volunteers got involved by cutting bamboo, making the bee homes and doing ‘guerrilla gardening’ planting of primroses. Local organisations and businesses also supported the initiative. The Wimborne Business Improvement District funded a Bee Trail leaflet, which is available from the Tourist Information Centre, so people can walk around the town and see each bee ‘des res’ for themselves. Business Multi-award-winning restaurateur Andy Lennox, inset, is bringing his Nusara Thai brand to Wimborne. He’s signed a 15-year lease on a two-storey building in Crown Court, just off The Square. Twenty-five new jobs, a mix of full and part-time, will be created with the opening of Nusara Wimborne in August. It joins ‘sister’ Nusara restaurants in Christchurch and Poole. Both have proved highly popular, scoring 5/5 and 4.5/5 respectively on TripAdvisor, based on 190 customer reviews. Nusara Wimborne will have a total of 115 covers, 75 inside and 40 outside. Offering in-house dining, takeaway, delivery and private dining, Nusara promises to ‘combine the age-old tradition of fire grilling alongside time-honoured recipes with a balanced Thai menu of meat, fish and plant.’ It ends a 10-year search by Andy for a suitable location in the town. He said: “We want to make this a leafy, gardenesque courtyardstyle restaurant with a small cocktail bar and an upstairs Treehouse-style restaurant. We want to get it exactly right.”

Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users

Creating a new Thai in town In excess of £150,000 is now being spent on the building,

which was previously a Chinese restaurant. But Andy, who lives in Wimborne, said: “It’s just aesthetic. I love a new site, it’s the fun part of the whole thing.” The 35-year-old also revealed plans to launch a version of his Zim Braai South African restaurant in Wimborne. Currently he has Zim Braai restaurants in Ashley Cross and Bournemouth. He said: “We’re looking to bring a version that we think could fit well.” Nusara, Zim Braai and also The Old Thatch Wimborne are part of

the Fired Up Collective. Formed in December 2020, they’re a collection of boutique hospitality brands in Dorset. Andy said growth plans included introducing additional brands. Nusara has been presented with Thai Select Signature status, the highest accolade for Thai Food by the Royal Thai government. It also received the highly coveted Ambassadors Choice by the Thai Ambassador to the UK in a recent ceremony.

Southwest solicitors sponsor major Thomas Hardy exhibition A legal firm with a 300 year history in the West Country is sponsoring the major new exhibition, Hardy’s Wessex. Battens Solicitors, which has six offices in Somerset and Dorset, was founded at Church House in Church Street, Yeovil, in the 18th century, before moving to its current HQ in Princes Street. The branch would have been open in 1876 when Thomas Hardy and his wife Emma

lived in lodgings at 7 St Peter Street, Yeovil. The couple stayed there from March to July, during which time Hardy corrected the final proofs of his novel, The Hand of Ethelberta. Battens’ sponsorship has helped Wessex Museums create this major exhibition – the largest collection of Hardy objects ever displayed at one time. Harriet Still, the exhibition

curator, said: “We are hugely grateful to Battens for their sponsorship. It is especially fitting our sponsor is so rooted in Wessex where Hardy found his inspiration.” Managing director of Battens Solicitors, Ceri Stephens, said: “Battens has a long history of supporting the arts both as a company and also through its charitable trust. We are delighted to sponsor this event which celebrates

both Hardy’s talent as a writer and the wonderful Wessex countryside and community.” Hardy’s Wessex spans the four Wessex Museums partners – Dorset, Poole, Wiltshire and Salisbury Museums. Each explores a different Hardy theme. Find out more on the Wessex Museums website: wessexmuseums.org.uk/ hardyswessex.

Peter steps down from funeral business After a career that has seen him work around the world, the chairman of a well-known Dorset business has stepped down from the board of directors. Peter Douch, 75, right, has been involved in the family funeral business since 1994, after a career as a chartered accountant. Founded by 1909 by Peter’s grandfather Fred in Wimborne, what became known as Douch Family Funeral Directors was initially a furniture and furnishing business. Furniture led to coffins and coffins led to funerals and when Peter joined as finance director in 1994 it had just two of its furniture shops left and three funeral branches. It is now dedicated to funerals with seven branches across Dorset and an award-winning funeral plan. The business employs about 50 staff. After leaving school Peter trained as an accountant in Poole and secured his

first post-qualification job in St Lucia. It was there he met his wife Josephine, a nurse. In 1976 they were married and he became manager in Dominica of accountants Coopers & Lybrand. Peter secured a job back in St Lucia in 1978 with the local brewery, where the couple lived with their four sons, Dweyn, Nick, Quentin and Andrew,

Florence on the up Rising star Florence Newton spent the length of the pandemic qualifying with Wimborne law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors. The ‘rule of six’ for social gatherings, a return to working from home and a 10pm curfew for hospitality had just been introduced when Florence, below, started her training contract in September 2020. Now she has become among the first solicitors in the area to qualify – and all while combining her training with duties as vice-president of Bournemouth and District Junior Lawyers Division. Florence is based in Ellis Jones’ dispute resolution

team and works closely with commercial property colleagues. Nigel Smith, managing partner at Ellis Jones, said: “Florence is one of our rising stars and I am convinced she has a very bright future.” Florence graduated with a first class honours degree in law from Bournemouth University before passing her LPC legal practice qualification with a commendation. She said: “I am sure the experience of training in different departments during a pandemic will stand me in good stead for the future. “I’m looking forward to progressing my career and supporting the firm’s many valued clients.”

until a move to England in 1988. The family settled in Yorkshire and Peter worked for a management consultant in Bradford. In 1994, Peter’s father Jack ran the family business and he moved down to join as finance director. Later he became managing director and in 2011 when his son Nick took on that role, he became chairman. Peter said: “My father ensured I worked in all aspects of the funeral business so I would know it inside out - from arranging and conducting funerals to coffin bearing. “It is a grounding that was important and one that I impressed on my children. “The business is in good health and with Nick as managing director I can now step back and spend more time between here and St Lucia.“It is also gratifying to know that two of my three grandchildren work in the business - the fifth generation.”

“Taking steps towards a brighter future...”

Electric cars costing too much to own According to research commissioned by Europcar the recent rise in the cost of electricity has put off three in 10 buyers from purchasing an electric vehicle in the next year. Nearly half of those surveyed (47%) also said that the purchase cost of the vehicles was deterring them. Household budgets are under even more financial pressure this year to warrant the financial step to electric car ownership. The latest figures published by the SMMT show electric car registrations rose 40.9% in April and accounted for more than one in 10 new car registrations. However, for those considering buying electric the main concerns are still the same: Purchase cost - 47%

CAR SALES

Battery range - 36% Lack of charging infrastructure -34% Other concerns include: Lack of knowledge about electric vehicles and ownership – 17% Vehicle performance – 14%

Resale value – 13% “Buying an electric car is a major financial investment and given the current economic climate affordability appears to be a major concern”, explained Ron Santiago of Europcar

How to keep it cool for cats

Feline sun worshipers! Cats can overheat in hot weather, so it’s important to provide them with an environment to help keep them cool. Cats only sweat through their paws and will rarely pant unless stressed, so taking extra steps to keep their body temperature lower will keep them comfortable during the warmer months. Common signs of overheating and heatstroke to look out for are: Panting Dribbling Wobbling or struggling to stand up Some cats find it harder to lose heat compared to others (see below) and extra precautions should be taken in the heat for these breeds: Flat-faced breeds - including Persians and British Shorthairs They can have difficulty breathing because of the extra tissues at the back of their throat. Hot weather can make things more

difficult for these breeds. Fluffy, long-haired cats Cats with long or thick fur will feel the heat more than their short haired friends. Regular grooming is important or even a professional haircut now and again. Older cats, cats with health problems and overweight cats Cats with age-related health conditions, or poorly cats may be better off staying indoors in the cool. They are less able

to deal with hot weather compared to their healthy, younger friends. Top tips – outdoors Provide plenty of shady spots in your garden Fresh water – ensure this is refreshed regularly each day Use pet-friendly sunscreen on lighthaired breeds – tips of ears and the nose are important areas Let your cat out to explore in the early morning and late evening when temperatures are lower Top tips – in your house Water - provide multiple water bowls around the house in areas that can be easily reached Keep your cat out of hot rooms like conservatories, sun rooms and greenhouses Open windows slightly to allow a gentle breeze throughout the house Create a cool room if you can. Encourage your cat to spend time in a cooler room with their favourite toys, feeders, cool blankets, etc.

The right veterinary care isn’t just about treating your pet It’s about looking after you too It’s not just about the latest appointment It’s about being there for the journey
