200 go running for refugees More than 200 walkers and runners joined organisers Lesley and Richard Davies for a tour of the Spetisbury countryside on Sunday, April 24, in aid of the Ukraine crisis. Poignantly, it was the day celebrated as Easter in Ukraine and the bright yellow of the oilseed rape fields reflected the yellow part of the Ukrainian flag. The weather did not disappoint and the clear blue sky reflected the blue
of the Ukrainian flag, the glorious sunshine seemed to bring the local wildlife alive including, unusually, a Zebra Finch foraging on the Trailway. Escapee or migrant, this bird usually inhabits warmer climes no closer than Portugal. Home-made cakes and a raffle at the event base at The Shack at Clapcotts Farm in the village rounded up the total collected to over £3,500 for the relief of refugees in Ukraine.
The Friends of Victoria Hospital are holding a fundraising cream tea this weekend at the Old School House, Sturminster Marshall, May 7 and 8. They promise not just scones, jam and clotted cream, but a whole selection of home-made cakes, crafts and gifts, from 2.30pm - 5.30pm. For more details, call Rae on 01202 889881.

Town to boost focus on dementia Are you or a loved one experiencing memory loss? If so, it could be a sign of dementia. Research has shown that the misconception around memory loss being a sign of ageing is the main barrier to people seeking diagnosis. Dementia is a growing concern and although there is a lot of support available, many people are unaware of it. To highlight the support available, Wimborne
Cream tea for hospital funds
will be involved in Dementia Action Week, running from May 16-22, with posters and collecting boxes around the town, in cafes and other meeting places. This year’s focus is on diagnosis, and locals will be encouraged to ‘act on dementia’ with leaflets explaining how to get a diagnosis and what help is available in and around Wimborne.
Wimborne Methodist Church shared the Easter story with over 25 children, plus adults. A wonderful time was had with songs, a cartoon video of the Easter story and making lots of Easter crafts. The afternoon finished with a tea which was enjoyed by all. The children left with a bag containing all their craft items and a knitted bunny holding an Easter egg.

Phone snapper captures dramatic by Lorraine Gibson Young folk snapping away on their phones is nothing new, but quickthinking Rosie Toomer, 21, had the foresight to use hers to capture the recent Canford Heath fire as it took hold. The result is a series of images offering insight and a potent warning into how dangerous and ferocious the blaze - believed to have been started deliberately - really was. Her vivid description of events unfolding is also fascinating. “I was going for a walk with my boyfriend, whose garden backs onto Canford Heath,” says Rosie. “We began smelling smoke, but thought it was a bonfire or barbecue. Then a friend called to warn us about the fire. “We retraced our steps to view things from a safe location (Canford Heath Road). I was curious to see where it started, and worried about how quickly it was spreading. “Embers jumped from the fire - it was getting worse. When it reached the bottom of the heath by the road, ambulances started to arrive.
“A terrifying moment,” says Rosie, “was when the perimeter fence at the road caught fire, creating thick, black smoke, which engulfed people’s houses. Pictures: ROSIE TOOMER “It was suffocating, you couldn’t see through it, with falling debris inside.” Rosie captured the fire from different angles. “It was rapidly travelling down the hill, destroying anything in its way. I realised it was serious when the fire brigade started evacuating people from houses. “I witnessed people packing their belongings into their cars, even an elderly woman with her cat in a basket, as they fled their homes. “Most terrifying was the degree of heat the fire let off. “A few days after it was out, the smell of smoke lingered.”

moments when heath caught fire
Rosie expands: “The sky turned grey and the sun was blocked out, creating a dark atmosphere. All you could hear were trees falling, smoke alarms going off, sirens and helicopters flying over. “My parents in Wimborne could smell the smoke from their garden. “I was struck by the families witnessing this and parents saying: ‘this is why you

don’t play with fire’. “Children were terrified.” On the fire’s impact on the local environment, Rosie, who works as a dental nurse in Wimborne, says: “It’s devasting the impact it’s had on the heath’s ecology. It would have been the height of the nesting season. “All the wildlife would all have
been impacted, whether they lived in burrows, on the ground, in bushes or in trees. “Now, instead of beautiful plants and trees creating shades of green throughout, it is black,” she adds. And the people who may have caused the fire? “I hope they get caught and are punished for ruining it for no apparent reason.”
“Your staff are exemplary in every way. They care for my every need, showing genuine kindness and always go above and beyond the call of duty. The excellent chef caters for my special diet - all cooked to perfection. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Current resident

Cracking Easter for care home funsters! Sunny Easter fun at Colten Care homes featured garden egg hunts, arts and crafts, visits by the Easter Bunny and collecting and donating chocolate treats for charity. In Brockenhurst in the New Forest, residents at Woodpeckers enjoyed an Easter egg hunt in aid of the home’s nominated charity, the Brockenhurst and Sway Friday Group. This meets weekly at Brockenhurst village hall offering social day care for isolated elderly residents living in the community. And arts and crafts sessions on an Easter theme were held at other homes. And in the run-up to Easter, children at schools close to all 21 Colten homes in
Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and West Sussex took part in an art project organised by the customer service teams in each area. Pupils were provided with an Easter-themed picture to colour in, with residents judging the entries and picking their favourites to receive prizes and certificates. The homes will be using the pictures to create bunting and other decorations throughout spring. Elaine Farrer, Colten Care’s chief operating officer, said: “The project was great fun and a brilliant example of community engagement and reaching across the generations.”

It’s time for some real social equality Do you ever dream of life on a faraway island and – even better – the discovery of hidden treasure there? In real life rich depositors stash money, usually in large amounts, not in full view, but in often hidden bank accounts on such paradise islands. They’re keen that we, the public, know little of what they’re up to: offshoring (as it’s called) their millions in tax havens – not havens where those deposits are taxed, but havens at a safe and legal distance from tax authorities. If these deposits were fairly taxed our society could become more like the paradise of which we dream: with a fast, responsive, fully staffed NHS; well-resourced education for all ages; urgent and comprehensive action taken to combat climate change; a generous government response to those seeking refuge and support for UK citizens living on the edge with
increasing anxiety. The truth is that those who can most afford it are often taxed the least and those who can least afford it are taxed the most in relative terms. Is this fair? Of course not. Can it be changed? Most certainly. Would life for all be happier, healthier, more hopeful? Definitely. Have a look at Liz and Paul’s shop window at Tails from the Woods in West Street, Wimborne. There’ll you’ll find a fantastic scene depicting such an island but, hang on, it’s not clothing suitable for a tropical island hanging on the washing line but money – lots of it. New facilities to help enjoy the Forest Three toilets for use by people with severe disabilities are to be built in the New Forest. A £205,000 government grant will pay for loos at Ringwood, Brockenhurst and Hythe under the Changing Places scheme and help enable severely disabled people to enjoy going out. The new facilities include a moveable ceiling hoist, an
adult-sized, height-adjustable changing bench, adjustable height sink, a specialist toilet with space either side, and a room with enough space for wheelchairs and carers. The loos will all be created before the end of 2024, said portfolio holder for people and places, David Russell. “We want people with disabilities and their families
and carers to be able to enjoy the New Forest, be that out on a day trip, travelling, or when just nipping to the shops, without having to worry,” he said. And people out and about in the New Forest can now fill their reusable water bottles with mains drinking water for free in Fordingbridge. The town has one of the New
Forest’s new water stations, which can also be found in Hythe, Totton, Brockenhurst and Burley. The facility was paid for by the government’s Welcome Back Fund, to encourage people to shop locally. The Fordingbridge water station is outside of the public toilet buildings in the car-park at The Bartons.
Spring show for under-threat society
UNDER THREAT: The Spring Flower Show. Right, Martin Stewart with the Cookery winners and below, Paul Beard and his award-winning merlins
Wimborne Horticultural Society held its first Spring Flower Show for three years and despite entries being down a third on the 2019 event, the quality was top-notch. A good number of people came through the Allendale Centre’s doors and enjoyed the displays of daffodils, tulips and other cut flowers and potted plants, alongside the cookery, photographic and craft sections. There was also a fascinating stand put up by Wilding Wimborne, who are campaigning for more trees in the town. The trophies were handed out by Martin Stewart, MD of Stewart’s Garden Centres and president of the society. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the continuation of the society, the silverware remained and special rosettes were presented. The awards were as follows: WHS Spring Challenge Cup for most points in the members section, Mr Bill Howarth, who also won the Spring Floral Cup and the Heatherwood Cup for Most Points in Daffodil Open classes and Most Points in Section C. Best exhibit in Members
classes was awarded to Paul Beard for his eye-catching vase of Daffodil ‘Merlin’ and Tony Beard walked away with the Committee Cup for his Daffodil entry in that class. Ray Hayward was a popular winner taking home the spoils in the prestigious Championship class and hot on his heels was Mark Reed who took Most Outstanding Vase of Daffodils as well as Best Bloom in Show. In other sections, Ruth Howarth was thrilled to take home the award for the most points for a lady exhibitor; Mrs J Simpson was best in the Handicraft section; Miss K Webb entered the winning photograph; and baking was shared by Mrs B Hallett and Miss S Fulgard-Jones. The show was a success but tinged with a little melancholy as membership has fallen dramatically. The future of the society hangs in the balance, which after more than 70 years of existence is a great shame. The fate of the society will be decided at the next meeting at 8pm on Monday, May 9, at the Allendale Centre.

New challenge for ‘human fish’ by Lorraine Gibson Not content with smashing the record for swimming round the Isle of Wight last August, ‘Human fish’ and clean ocean crusader Oly Rush, right, from Poole is now heading to the Caribbean in a bid to be the first person ever to swim around the island of Grand Cayman. Luckily, Cayman’s four most common species of coastal sharks - Nurse, Lemon sharks, Caribbean Reef and Blacktips - are quite timid. The 37-year-old plasterer, who is often called a ‘turbo swimmer’,
is undeterred. Oly, more concerned about their welfare than their bites, says: “Shark numbers are rapidly declining. It’s an enormous challenge but I’ve put in the training and have a very professional team behind me.” He’ll attempt the gruelling, 60-mile, non-stop swim at the end of May and reckons it will take 30 hours to circumnavigate the island. Community Garden’s big dig This Saturday and Sunday May 7 and 8 2.30pm, the Wimborne Community Garden is going to cut its first turf (and hopefully a lot more) as it begins to come to life, writes Jane Benson. Following consultation with the community through Facebook, a wish list was compiled of all the things that were wanted in the town’s newly-developing community garden. The list was translated by a landscape designer into three possible plans for the garden lay-out at the site which is in the centre of Wimborne up School Lane, next to Redcotts Park. Tomorrow we begin putting the winning design into action and for this we need as much man (and woman!) power as possible. At the end, we’ll share a simple barbecue as we admire all our handy work and then those brave enough, will be welcome to come and work all over again the following day! The idea for the Community
Garden was born out of the idea of trying to put as much fresh food as possible into the food boxes that are packed for the Wimborne Food Bank; the Community Garden has pledged that 25% of all that is grown will go to the Wimborne Food Bank to be used there. Faithworks Wessex, which is the charity that the Food Bank operates under, is supporting the Community garden too. As the garden is in the grounds of what is to become Beaucroft School’s new annex, the Garden will also be lucky enough to be able to support the students to grow produce for the new café they are going to build. This will be run by the students and provide an excellent facility for those using Redcotts Park as well as the wider community. During the past couple of years, the value of a caring community has been evident and the Garden hopes to continue to uphold this. Everyone will be welcome – it will be a garden for everyone
in the community. The Garden will develop as skills within our community become available and these may be of gardening, but also perhaps of artwork or bricklaying or fixing lights... as the skills emerge, so the garden will flourish. If you feel you could help in any way please do come along and join us up School Lane at 2.30. If you want to know any more, contact us on wimbornecommunitygarden @gmail.com.

Chicks bring back farmyard memories
A Dorset care home hatched a plan to celebrate springtime by hosting the birth of some fluffy chicks. After team members at Colten Care’s Avon Reach in Mudeford put a heated incubator with embryo eggs centre stage in the home’s lounge, residents waited eagerly for the new arrivals. They were transfixed as, one by one, the eggs hatched over the course of several days with, eventually, eight chicks welcomed into the world. Companionship team leader Megan Castell said: “It was the most magical time and our residents were totally fascinated. “It was so interactive when the chicks arrived as residents could get up close and hold them.” Among those enjoying the births was June Chandler who grew up on a farm in Wiltshire and loved being surrounded by animals. June said she knew exactly what to
n June Chandler with a chick and, above, as a young girl with Larry the lamb
expect when the chicks were born, recalling happy girlhood memories of looking after poultry, lambs and piglets. “The chickens were no trouble,” remembered June. “Ours had a little run but they had to be wired in because of the jackdaws.
“We also had a little lamb named Larry and when the piglets were born we used to bring them home and warm them up by the fire. “They were little devils really, very wriggly.” All eight chicks born at Avon Reach have now left to go to good homes, either free range farms locally or to people with existing hen flocks.
Middle school celebrates ‘Star’ billing
West Moors Middle School has been awarded Dorset Council’s Education ‘STAR’ Award, after achieving a Good judgement in their recent Ofsted inspection. Vik Verma, director of education and learning in Dorset Council, attributed this to the strong senior leadership, the dedication of the staff team and the commitment of children to their personal learning journeys. The Ofsted inspectors commented that leaders have high aspirations
and that pupils rise to this challenge, so that all pupils will be ‘the best that they can be’. They were impressed to see children so motivated and inspired to read and acknowledged the ambitious curriculum in place to support children’s development of knowledge. The Ofsted inspectors also praised the careers education within the school and recognised the combined efforts of all members of the school community in
ensuring children at West Moors Middle School thrive and feel supported in ‘being themselves’. In March councillors visited the school where they had the opportunity to talk with many of the children. One said: “I was delighted to visit West Moors Middle School once again and see for myself, the improvements being made across the board and also a chance to offer our congratulations to everyone involved in the
school’s recent achievement of being graded Good by Ofsted. “The confidence and enthusiasm with which both the students and teachers spoke to us about their work was impressive...” Dr Deborah Craddock, headteacher, said she was incredibly proud of everyone in her school community whose enthusiasm, hard work and commitment have made such a positive difference to their children’s education, growth and development.

Take a walk (and swim) on the wild side
By Faith Eckersall You’d have to be living on Mars not to notice the leap in popularity of wild or openwater swimming in the past few years. News reports, magazines, and social media have been peppered with images of people striding into lakes, rivers and the sea for a bracing dip, even in the middle of winter. The Outdoor Swimming Society saw a 36 per cent membership leap in 2020. While part of the interest can be put down to the covid pandemic, when indoor pools were closed, the practise of open water swimming has been increasing for years. In Dorset, which is blessed with what is probably the UK’s most beloved coastal feature – Durdle Door – there are plenty of amazing spots and now these, and the walks you can take to visit them, are the subject of a new book in the Wild Swimming Walks series. Written by Sophie Pierce and Matt Newbury, the book reveals 28 coastal, lake and river wild swims in Dorset and East Devon. Written in a conversational style, it helps readers to find the kind of walk and swim which best suits them and their abilities, as well as adding plenty of useful local tips and fascinating facts. There are walks in the Frome Valley, walks which incorporate ancient sites, such as Hod Hill and walks which take you to Corfe Castle and the Green Pool. If you prefer a seaside amble, then check out the Arne Peninsula Circular which, say the authors ‘will make you feel like a castaway’ and the far more taxing trip to Chapman’s Pool and Dancing Ledge, the man-made sea pool which is thought to be the inspiration for the one in Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers.
Here are three of the book’s walks: Walk 21 - Wareham Rivers Double The two-mile walk starts at Howards Lane car-park in Wareham and along the way you can swim in the River Frome at Abbot’s Quay and the River Piddle at Wareham common. Accompanied by a fine potted history of Wareham’s Roman and Anglo-Saxon heritage, the walk takes you past St Martin on the Walls church, with its stone effigy of TE Lawrence, and along the River Piddle to the Weir at West Mills, the first swimming spot in the book. The walk continues to Abbot’s Quay where the authors describe a ‘quiet set of steps’ to allow for entry to the water. Because of the boats and other watercraft, using a float or a brightly coloured swimming cap to ensure you are visible is advisable, says the book. The walk continues past the Priory church of Lady St Mary and back to the beginning. Walk 22 - Shapwick and White Mill circular This walk starts at the car park by St Bartholomew’s church and takes you 4.5 miles through Shapwick, incorporating a potential dip in the River Stour. Travel through Hardyesque fields and past the
Book and Bucket cheese company’s farm. Passing White Mill, continue to the swim spot where, the writers say: ‘You have to scramble down the bank to enter the water’. While you’re there you can contemplate the legend of the ‘lost bells’ of Knowlton church, said to have been discarded in the river by thieving Sturminster Marshall villagers, who allegedly stole them for their own church! The walk takes in the Charles Bennett Village Green, named after the village’s illustrious Olympian, and the Anchor Inn. Walk 18 - Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door Circular This ‘energetic but endlessly rewarding walk’ takes in what is arguably Britain’s most famous geographical feature and the unofficial symbol of Dorset. The 6.5-mile hike can start with a swim at Lulworth Cove whose white stones ‘give a Mediterranean feel’ and continues with a hike over Hanbury Tout. Go through a field, past Scratchy Bottom to join the South West coast Path at West Bottom. The walk takes you up and down steep hills, past Bat’s Head and Swyre Head and eventually to Durdle Door where, says the
book, ‘a swim through the arch is a magical thing to do’. The walk ends at the Lulworth car-park. n Open water swimming is a potentially dangerous activity undertaken entirely at your own risk. Cold water can be dangerous to health and you should never jump or dive in before checking the depth of the water and also your exit point. The book warns that the locations are prone to currents, tidal-immersion and sea-state changes. Some landowners do not welcome swimmers. The legality of access and use of open water is discussed here: outdoorswimmingsociety. com/is-it-legal/ Wild Swimming Walks is published by Wild Things Publishing at £14.99.

never expected it to gain the momentum it has. “We were joined by so many craft producers, local traders and skilled rural individuals.
“The feedback has been incredible.” A major highlight of the show programme was horseback falconry in the Jonathan Marshall Free Spirits Show. This featured the black horse, famous in the Lloyds Bank adverts and an incredible stunt of a falcon flying in between the horses’ legs which had the crowd mesmerised. The Show is due to return in April 2023.

EU countries selling weapons to Russia Addressing the plight of Ukrainians continues to be my top political priority. It was a privilege to meet again and to hear first-hand from Oleksii Goncharenko, a Ukrainian Member of Parliament from Odessa. In an emotional speech to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg he described vividly the horror of being in Odessa over the Orthodox Easter weekend when Russian shelling killed innocent civilians in that city including a baby, her mother and grandmother. Oleksii was scathing in his criticism of those EU countries which continue to help finance the Russian aggression by buying Russian oil and gas. He also rightly criticised France and Germany for selling weapons to Russia in breach of an embargo while still being unwilling to provide the modern armaments that Ukraine
desperately needs. He singled out the United Kingdom for praise in providing support for Ukraine with both modern weapons and humanitarian assistance. His speech was echoed by Mariia Mezentseva, an MP from the city of Kharkiv which is still under siege. Both MPs challenged those who are fearful of the war escalating by reminding
We’ve read and heard a lot in the local media recently about crime. No, no… I’m not talking about the MPs for once, but crime here in our community. There’s real concern it is increasing and that the local police force is too thinly spread to respond to it. There was a spate of shed and garage break-ins over Easter in Blandford, catalytic converter thefts are on the increase, and even NHS vehicles are having their fuel stolen. Whilst these incidents are – rightly – getting a lot of attention, if we look at the statistics, crime levels have been relatively flat through 2021 and into 2022. What’s really worrying local people is the anecdotes of people calling 999, but no
police car being dispatched. There was the recent incident when a campsite in Melbury was overrun with ravers, but when the owner called 999 they were told no police could attend as there was only one car covering the whole of North Dorset. If people don’t think that the police are going to respond, then they are less likely to report a crime, casting doubt over those statistics. The police and crime commissioner for Dorset was challenged on staffing levels recently, but refused to give details, citing operational reasons. If the PCC won’t say how many bobbies are on the beat, surely that tells us there are gaps. The issue – as ever – seems to be funding. The sense that rural communities are low

us that Russia has already completed escalation of the war to everything short of nuclear conflict and that the rest of the world needs to wake up to that reality and provide more help. The Ukrainians have invited MPs from across Europe to visit to see for themselves the evidence of the atrocities committed by Russia in breach of the Geneva Convention. Ensuring that these war crimes do not go unpunished will be essential once the war is over. On the humanitarian front, there is good news to report about local families who have applied for Ukrainian families to be able to live with them in and around Christchurch. I have been in close liaison with the Home Office to ensure that decisions can be expedited and bureaucracy minimised while at the same time recognising the paramount importance of
safeguarding the vulnerable, particularly children who may appear to be unaccompanied. It is heartening that voluntary organisations in the constituency are so eager to provide community assistance to support our warm welcome for these refugees from war. To that end, I had a most constructive meeting with representatives from local churches. n On a different note, Amazon Logistics invited me to see their operation on the Airport industrial estate which facilitates timely delivery of Amazon goods and services to residents and businesses across Dorset. The quality of the service which they provide has been recognised as one of Amazon’s best across the whole world which is quite an achievement when we remember that Amazon is now the largest global employer!
Our government’s questionable priorities
Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS crime communities pervades central government thinking. This year, Dorset received one of the lowest police funding increases, along with rural Gloucestershire and North Wales. Overall police funding has only just returned to the level of the last Labour government, despite the Tories pushing taxes up to
the highest levels since the Second World War. No levelling-up money. No regional bus grants. And now one of the lowest police funding settlements. So much for Dorset being represented in Westminster. You can tell a lot about a government by what they choose not to do as much as what they prioritise. This week, they dropped the proposed audit reform bill. Four years, three reviews and one huge consultation since the collapse of Carillion, with a consensus painstakingly forged across auditors, the audited and both sides of the house... and it’s been dropped. Apparently privatising Channel 4 and crippling the BBC is more important than stopping corporate malfeasance. Priorities, eh?

Spring in to floral club Spring is here and already our gardens are coming to life, writes Janet Lee. At our meetings here in Colehill we can appreciate the beauty of flowers all the year round so why not come and join us and try something new? The Colehill Floral Arrangement Club meets every third Monday at 7.30pm in the Colehill Village Hall, Cannon Hill Road, Colehill. The next meeting is on May 16 when the demonstration will be A Night At The Movies by Denise Jones. We can promise people from Colehill, Wimborne and all the surrounding areas a warm welcome and you

Exploring Stour & Avon... FERNDOWN Ferndown is a (comparatively) new parish, having taken over other parishes such as Hampreston. It’s mainly urban but has some interesting countryside areas which we shall explore. Start at Longham, to the east of Hampreston, where there’s a garden centre with a cafe and an interesting hobby shop and, conveniently, a large car park. Walk down to the adjacent roundabout where there’s an ‘Untied Deformed Church’, built in 1841. Then turn south, down the A348 through Longham for a furlong, then take a bridleway to your right, westwards, which soon gives you access to a footpath on your left,
with retired Dorset rights of way officer CHRIS SLADE

southwards, then east, south, west and north going clockwise around a massive lake, taking a short cut along an embankment crossing it. Then make your way back to the entrance, rejoining the bridleway and
heading west, then north as far as the road, which you cross, taking a footpath the curves round to the north west to the edge of an area of woodland and heathland, a Nature Reserve with permissive paths through it. Weave your way north through the Reserve doing some nature study until you reach a road. Here you turn right past a school, then right, south south east down Church Road for five furlongs to the massive C of E Church. Then turn right and head south south west down the A348 for a mile down to the first Church, then right to the car park and maybe partake of a little shopping. You might also feel the need for some refreshment as you’ll have walked about seven miles.

Getting older is better than not! I always joke that I don’t mind getting older as it’s better than the alternative! Of course, how we imagine time and age is relative and changes as we go through life. I remember being in ‘infants’ at Colehill First School and thinking how grown up and sophisticated the eight-year-olds were! Similarly, people’s perception of mid-life changes as we go through life and our idea of middle age or even when ‘old age’ starts tends to stretch as we journey along ourselves and rack up the birthdays. Age doesn’t relate to someone’s physical abilities anywhere near as much as you might think. When I’m doing a fitness assessment, rather than ask someone their age, I prefer to ask; ‘What age do you feel?’ as this gives a more useful response on the lines of: ‘well my
mind thinks I’m still 25, but my lower back likes to remind me I’m 65!’. You can tell a lot about someone’s resilience and mindset, which are also important anti-aging qualities. Rather than look at life as a hill where middle age is on the top and it’s all downhill from there, try and imagine a birds-eye view looking down on a calendar where each unit of time is equal rather than disappearing away from us in the distance. If we view each stage of life as equal and active, there is more incentive to invest in ourselves; to keep fit, to eat well, to spend time developing quality relationships and invest in where we live and our local community. These things also encourage long life and so it becomes a virtuous circle.
Assuming that older people aren’t capable of something just because of age alone is of course, a type of discrimination. Ageism is a form of discrimination against our future selves as it says a lot about our own ideas of how we think we’re going to be when we get older. In moments when I think I’m not getting any younger, I like to remind myself firstly; I’m the same age as the Spice Girls (because they’re forever young in my mind) and that the Queen was older than I am now during her Silver Jubilee in 1977. I’m only just getting started. Locally, there are lots of people having an active old age; cycling, jogging, going to the gym, playing golf and tennis, attending Pilates and yoga classes. Don’t make the mistake of

You don’t have to take clothes off! Worried about having a massage because you’re not sure what to expect? Maybe you’re not much of a touchyfeely person and the thought of massage panics you! There are many reasons why some of us may shy away from massage - scars, body confidence, trauma, shyness or just not enjoying touch so much. The good news is you don’t need to be a touchy-feely person to have and enjoy a massage, in fact you don’t even need to take off your clothes! If it takes a session or two for
you to feel comfortable before you get on the massage couch, that’s absolutely fine. A technique I often use in my massage is called Amma Fusion. It’s wonderful as it can be used over the sheet at the beginning of the treatment. The strokes are slow, deep and satisfying. A unique combination of Eastern techniques, it’s a glorious mix of the best strokes from Thai massage, shiatsu and acupressure, all adapted for the massage couch. Another advantage to the Amma technique is that it acts as a hands-on assessment and allows me to feel what’s going on and where, helping you and your body to relax. My clients often comment when they see photos on my website of me massaging and ask for the ‘massage where you stand on me’. That may sound odd but to be clear I’m

Keep your red balloon inflated Imagine yourself in a card shop, at the counter, waiting patiently whilst the assistant carefully inflates a lovely red balloon with helium. Gentle squirts of helium are carefully injected so as not to over inflate, but equally careful to ensure that it’s filled just right so that it’s brimming with desperation to float up into the air. You watch on as the fiddly job of tying off the balloon takes place and at last you are handed your balloon which is now attached to a shiny blue piece of ribbon. Feeling happy as your balloon bounces along on the air behind you, you venture home. Now, what happens to the balloon? In my experience, it will either suddenly pop and scatter bits of itself across the surrounding area, or it will slowly but surely deflate and slump to the floor as the
last of its energy seeps out. Finally, it gets scooped up and thrown in the bin. Gone. No more. So what’s this got to do with anything? A few years ago I attended a conference and the facilitator used the analogy of a big red balloon to explain something that I think happens to all of us at some point in our lives. Have you ever felt enthused, excited and motivated to do something? Have you ever had a great idea? Have you ever experienced a time when you’ve made a decision, perhaps a change of path in love, life, career etc? And maybe you have become so excited, motivated and inspired that you’ve dared to share that idea, that passion, with another, who promptly dismisses it straight out of hand, perhaps even criticises it, provides a patronising
laugh or a ‘don’t be silly, you could never do that.’ Or perhaps rather than dismiss you immediately, they just don’t seem all that n Victoria Arnold is a life interested, it doesn’t light coach from Wimborne them up like it did you, Victoriaarnold.co.uk they’re impassive and move on to talk about something those that are positive and else, and you’re just left understanding then you can feeling deflated and void of keep your balloon flying energy. high, which means you will You are the balloon. New breathlessness clinic at hospital by Lorraine Gibson A breathlessness clinic hosted by Lewis-Manning’s respiratory specialist physiotherapist, Louise Hopley, right, has launched at Wimborne Hospital. Clare Gallie, chief executive said: “This expansion of our services to new hubs across the communities of East Dorset, Purbeck and Poole is part of our strategy to bring care ‘closer to home’ for our patients and we are delighted that it is now being offered in Wimborne.” Physiotherapist Louise says that more people will now be supported with what is often a very serious condition. “We are so thrilled that we are able to run the

more accessible to those in the surrounding area. “Breathlessness can be frightening. We help people with respiratory conditions, such as COPD and lung cancer. The clinic is very patient-centred – it is about listening to each person’s journey and their individual experience of breathlessness
and how it impacts their lives.” Each patient is individually assessed. Louise explains: “It is an opportunity for me to learn about what coping strategies they already use and together we look at other ways to help, such as breathing techniques, positions to ease breathlessness, and fan therapy.” To access the service you must be registered with a GP surgery and healthcare professionals directly linked to your care can refer you. For further information call: 01202 708470 and ask for Louise or visit lewismanning.org.uk/betterbreathing-clinic.

Health & Wellbeing By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com My work is all about helping you learn how to move from a negative state to a positive one. Whether you are feeling anxious, fearful, worried, overwhelmed or just stuck, I aim to teach tools and techniques that you can use quickly and easily on your own. Once you feel a sense of empowerment over your emotions then it becomes much easier to create the positive changes you need. There is one thing that always plays a key role in this, whatever your end goal: breath. Breathing is the easiest and fastest way to change your state - and you already know how to do it! Here are three simple ways I encourage clients to incorporate breathwork into their lives. Give these a go and notice the difference they make!
The power of breath great at bedtime, when you want to switch off and get to sleep!
Universal Breath This is great for helping you feel centred and calm. Also known as the 6-6 breath, you breathe in through your nose for 6 and out for 6. Simple as that! I encourage you to practice this breath several times a day as a way of teaching yourself how to get into a really positive, balanced state. Some people like to imagine a light travelling up and down their spine as they breathe in and out, or picture the spine as a zip opening and closing. The 6-6 breath is also
7-11 Breathing By extending your exhales you stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. If you experience sudden anxiety or fear, this breath pattern will take you out of the flight or fight response. Simply breathe in for the count of 7 and out for 11, and keep going for at least a couple of minutes. If 7/11 is too much for you, you could try 5/7 - or whatever feels more comfortable. The important thing is to fully extend the exhale. Counting in your head as you breathe really helps - it makes it much harder for the brain to focus on the thought that caused the original feeling. Physiological Sigh Sometimes known as the Sniff and Sigh, this is a great stress-busting technique. All you do is take two very
short sniffs in through your nose, and then release them through your mouth in a much longer exhale. You may notice small children doing this when they are calming down after a period of crying. It’s a natural, in-built response that we all have. Animals do it, too - watch a dog settling down for a snooze and you might witness the same kind of sniff and sigh as it makes itself comfortable. When we consciously do this it has the same effect. Just three of these after some 7-11 breaths will send a message to your brain that the initial panic or fear has passed, allowing you to let go of any residual stress. It’s easy to underestimate the power of our breath, but it’s the key to releasing any negative emotion that you want to be free of. Breathing through the nose is especially important. Why? Well, when you think about it, it’s really hard to panic if you’re breathing through your nose, right? So to overcome those feelings, nose breathing is your friend.

Jayne achieves aim without any strain Jayne’s Slimming World Journey “Coming to the point where only a few items of clothing fitted me, I was washing and wearing repeatedly, I decided to start going to Wimborne Slimming World. “I contacted Livewelldorset who offer vouchers for 12 free weeks to eligible people and was thrilled when I was accepted for one. “I began my weight loss journey at the end of September 2021, weighing in at the largest I had ever been. I loved the Food Optimising plan, suiting me so well too as I am largely vegetarian and so many foods being unlimited. I surprisingly found the group very supportive, especially listening to all the tips, hints and ideas each week and deciding for myself what would work best for me. “I always left the meetings

feeling motivated. Thanks to the support of the group and to Louise, my Slimming World Consultant I have lost consistently every week with little effort. “After seven months I am just short of five stone lighter. My clothes now fit (and even fall off me), I can move around so much more easily, and I am not worried about looking into a mirror or a shop window anymore.
“I have not found it difficult to follow; it is varied and easy to follow and works so well. I love my book being covered in the stickers that have been
awarded to me in group each week. “I would certainly recommend Slimming World to anyone as the food within the plan can easily be tailored to anyone’s tastes or preferences” Louise, Wimborne’s consultant says: “Jayne truly is one if the group’s motivational members, the other members are always asking her for tips and advice as she is doing so well. We are all so proud of her. Five stone in such as short time is an amazing result.” If you are interested in coming along to one of Louise’s sessions they are held on Tuesdays at the Community Learning and Resource Centre, Wimborne, 9am, 10.30am, 4pm, 5.30pm, or 7pm. A truly fine month in our gardens... Your Garden in May May sees the end of cherry blossom, the wonder of apple blossom to start the month, and some of the first fruits of the year at the end of the month. It truly is a fine month in the garden. The fresh spring greens of trees as they finally spring to life and provide food for insects and baby birds in return is pretty heartwarming, and the sun has strength and promise. It also happens to be my birthday! Weed! Those weeds keep coming in earnest in the warm weather, so pull out or hoe off any weeds whilst young to prevent seedheads from forming. Check Lilies for lily Beetle and Box for box moth caterpillar Both of these pests are difficult
to control, and can cause quite serious damage to your plants if ignored. Box moth has been an increasing emerging pest in the UK over the recent years, and I had a brief battle with it at the end of last year so it has reached Dorset now. Many owners of substantial box hedging and those planning to plant have chosen to replace their box with a similar looking plant due to both the
devastating impacts of box moth and box blight on the plants. There is some hope for box moth however, as blue tits are now starting to try them out as a food source (though not sufficiently to protect bushes from significant attack). Currently there is no official UK licensed product home consumers can use for box moth caterpillar. There
has been some mention of a product called Xentari, but currently this product is not licensed and not on the UK pesticide register. Only one product, which is licensed only for professionals with a PA1/6 qualification, is available as a pesticide control for box. A product has been available in the EU for a couple of years, but has yet to pass UK regs. Other generic systemic pesticides will have some effect, but do not spray when in bud or bloom due to the threats to pollinators. If you can, pick off any caterpillars you see, and consider replanting with a different species if the problem is unmanageable. Good alternatives include Euonymus, Yew, Pittosporum and Berberis. Lily beetle damage is caused both by adults and larvae, bu t the larvae do the most damage. The adults are bright red on top, but have a tendancy to fall off the plant upside down when they sense vibration as a defence mechanism, rendering them invisible! Their larvae generally hide under the leaves and disguise themselves with a layer of their own dung! Keep watch, and pick off and kill any larvae and adults seen. Prune spring flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering. This is essential to do now, so that the plant can grow and produse the stems for flowers next spring. In general, spring flowering plants produce flowers on old wood, so foliage needs at least nine months to mature and develop buds. Forsythia, Rhododendron, and Camelia are all examples. Support growing herbaceous plants You can buy special hoops and rings to help prop up taller herbaceous plants, these look great, but can be pricey if you’ve got lots or are on a tight budget! VOW to fight waste
by Lorraine Gibson Awaken your eco-warrior and join VOW - Verwoodians on Waste - on their mission to clean up the planet. It is a group of local people who, like many of us, are concerned about the negative impact of plastic on our health, the environment and future generations. Their aim is to support others to reduce their global footprints and as well as a litter-picking session at the Recreation Ground on the last Saturday of the month, they have an eco-gift catalogue, TerraCycle recycling points in the town, a pop-up recycling ‘surgery’ and lend out items, including a sewing machine for mending clothes. New rules at recycling centres by Faith Eckersall Dorset Council is changing its rules for vehicle permits at household recycling centres. Permit-holders will now need to reapply for a new permit to reflect changes which mean that dual cab pick-ups will need a permit to use Household Recycling Centres and will face an allowance of six or 12 visits a year, depending on which permit you are eligible for. However, all permits, which are free to obtain, can be used at weekends and Bank Holidays although you’ll need to renew your permit when it expires. Vans up to 3.5t, single and dual-cab pick-ups and car-derived vans will need permits and there is a long list of vehicles now not

allowed on sites, including horse boxes and flatbed vans. The changes will also affect users of the Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Somerley household recycling centres. Dorset Council says the changes reflect the results of its 2021 consultation, which found that its permitted vehicle policy was being exploited by traders to dispose of business waste.

A tonic of bluebells and wild garlic The blue bells for the scent and sight and the wild garlic for the taste and smell. As we walk I can’t resist popping an unopened wild garlic bud in my mouth for that true taste explosion which to me signals spring like nothing else. I make a lot of wild garlic pesto at this time, freezing some for later in the year. It’s just oil, wild garlic, dash of lemon juice, nuts (I try to use local ones) and a lot of grinding in the mortar and pestle. Of course you can use a mixer but I rather like the more primitive, slower method. The gift of a tiny yellow rose a few years ago has made it presence known in the garden this year. I believe it is Banksia Rose and it’s rambling like the proverbial bat out of hell! Roaring across ivy-clad fences it is invading next door’s garden shamelessly. Our neighbours tell us they love its trespassing nature so I can’t bring myself to re-direct it just yet! If you have already got the oil out for the pesto you might as well pick a few rose petals and make an infused rose oil too. Another highlight in the garden at this

Puff pastry twists Those who read my column regularly will remember that one of my greatest discoveries is that you can buy readymade puff pastry! I have decided to try and keep a packet in the fridge, for those times that you get unexpected visitors. Not that this is very likely as my husband is well known amongst family and friends as being anti-social. When we lived in the country, this wasn’t a problem, as not many people would drive out there without warning! Now we have moved to civilisation, it’s a different story. We have friends who like to pop in for a cup of tea and I find that these twists are a quick easy alternative to biscuits. We also have a lovely terraced garden and with the warm weather coming in, we like to sit and have a gin cocktail in the evenings. We are lucky enough to live at the back of a golf course, so its very quiet and not overlooked. Its great to sit and chat , with a drink and a cheese twist, watching the sun go down. We use them to measure how much gin to have, so a ‘gin and a twist’ has a whole new meaning!!
with Martha Legg
They don’t keep very well, as the puff pastry can lose its crispyness, but they’re so moreish it doesn’t really matter, once you start eating them, you can’t stop!! My grandchildren like them as well, and they can be a quick snack between meals, naughty I know, but grandma’s rules! Ingredients: 1 Sheet of pre-prepared puff pastry each for the chocolate twists and cheese twists. Chocolate Spread Grated Cheese Milk to glaze
Method: Roll out the pastry on a floured board until it is about 1/8inch thick. Cut the sheet in half length ways For the chocolate twists: Coat one half of the pastry with chocolate spread, right up to the edges. Put the other half of the pastry on top Cut the pastry in half length ways, then into 1 inch strips Twists the strips 3 or 4 times and put on a baking tray When all the strips are ready, brush with milk Cook on 180C until brown. For the cheese twists: Cut the pastry in half, springle the cheese all over one half Put the other half of the pastry on top Cut the pastry in half length ways, then into 1 inch strips Twists the strips three or four times and put on a baking tray When all the strips are ready, brush with milk Cook on 180C until brown.

by Faith Eckersall BCP Council’s Access to Food partnership has been awarded £194,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund, which will allow its work to continue over the next three years. The Access to Food partnership is made up of BCP Council, Public Health Dorset, Faithworks and other Community and Voluntary Sector organisations. Founded in March 2020, these organisations have been working together to help vulnerable residents access nutritious food over the last two years. The partnership’s projects include growing, cooking,
community meals, and resources that help people to access food when in crisis, as well as building skills and community resilience. As the cost-of-living crisis develops, supporting local community food providers and partner organisations is essential to help local residents in need, says the council. Bake Off star Maggie’s in store for you
This month at Salamander Cookshop there are some great events including a chance to meet special guest, 2021 GBBO contestant Dorset’s Maggie Richardson who will demonstrate cake icing / decorating techniques in the Dacombes’ Demonstration Kitchen on Wednesday, May 25, (admission by advance ticket only). Salamander also has two drop-in events in the shop. On Saturday, May 14, from 11am-2pm, Wusthof Knife expert Jake Cross is in store with advice on how best to sharpen and maintain knives. Jake will demonstrate how to use a steel with easy ways to ensure you get this right every time as well as whetstones and simple pullthrough sharpeners. And there is a chance to meet ceramics and textiles designer Emily Smith. Emily is based in Devon and her innovative and creative designs not only caught our eye but have proved popular with customers. See her products and hear about her inspirations on Saturday, May 21, from 11am-2pm. The Salamander Food Walk Fifteen guests joined Salamander’s owner David Crossley on a tour of some
of the artisan food shops and in Wimborne in April. All appreciated how lucky we are to live in a town with so much locally-sourced food available. They began by visiting at Bell’s Fish where Mike let us taste the delicious salmon smoked on the premises, progressed to the Old Malthouse Bakehouse where they sampled a lovely flatbread and then to Farehouse Trading with a chance to buy local gin, tea, coffee and their famous chilly pastes. Then across the bridge to Fluffets at Home where eggs take centre stage, and some delicious local cheese was tasted by all. Chococake satisfied those with a sweet tooth where different dark, plain and white chocolates were enjoyed, and we heard all about their speciality cakes for special occasions. The tour ended at East Street Deli where we tasted three superb local cheeses and a visit to the kitchen garden at Dean’s Court where Chef James told us of their plans which include growing and selling vegetable boxes this summer. As one guest remarked: “I enjoyed your very well organised food tour so much that I’d like to book a place now to ensure
that my wife can come along on your next one.” Save the dates: June events include a chance to learn about coffee roasting and using a range of coffee makers at the Wimborne Coffee Roasters on Saturday,
June 11, and a demonstration of how to make the best use of iconic KitchenAid Mixer with their National Demonstrator at Dacombes on June 16. Full details at salamandercookshop.com.

Exhibition celebrates fun and festivities The new exhibition at the Museum of East Dorset celebrates seven decades of local fun and festivities. Inspired by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year, the exhibition examines how local people have observed important local and national events since 1952. It will run until March next year.
Celebrating local events Members of the community were invited to contribute to the exhibition by sharing stories, reminiscences, photographs and memorabilia. Celebrations include the Queen’s coronation and jubilees, local carnivals held at Wimborne and Verwood, ‘The Magpies’ historic win in the FA Vase final in 1992, and how we marked the millennium. East Dorset towns and villages including Wimborne,
l The original Verwood carnival crown, dating from 1929
Verwood, Witchampton and Shapwick have contributed photographs and artefacts. During 2022, the museum will also celebrate 400 years of Dorset button making and the its 60th birthday. Little Explorers activities over the summer will include various themed events. Celebrating people Community organisations were invited to create

celebratory pennants to represent their groups which are on display. The museum has launched a ‘Celebrating Ourselves’ portrait competition inviting schoolchildren to create a portrait of themselves as their ‘best selves’ be they artists, scientists or YouTubers. There will be a winner from each age group and portraits will be displayed in May.
Celebrating nature Children will also be able to celebrate nature in the museum’s garden by creating ‘Andy Goldsworthy’inspired pieces of art from a range of natural materials provided. They can take pictures of their art and post them on social media. Chezzie Hollow, museum director, said: “This exhibition is very much inspired by, and created with, the local community. “For the first time, visitors will be able to ‘experience’ different exhibition elements across the whole site as well as in the exhibition gallery. Interactive elements encour. “The exhibition is family friendly and is a fantastic opportunity for all ages to experience the museum in a new way”. Partnership results in stunning shows ACCLAIMED: Carmen and, right, Cupid’s Revenge
Dorset’s touring arts charity Artsreach has joined forces with the Mowlem Theatre in Swanage to present two acclaimed performing companies live on stage for audiences from across Dorset to enjoy this summer. New Art Club will present Cupid’s Revenge on Friday, May 13, and Regent’s Opera will present Carmen on Sunday, June 26. Cupid’s Revenge will also be at The Exchange, Sturminster Newton on Saturday, May 14. New Art Club is a groundbreaking company that has been touring internationally to critical acclaim since
1998, performing in venues as radically different as the Royal Opera House and Wembley Stadium to pubs and village halls. Their latest acclaimed production, Cupid’s Revenge, is a joyful, physical and verbal outburst against the forces that masquerade as love. Cupid’s Revenge is all about love in its many forms: mythical love that drives the creation of the universe and everything in it in it; Romantic love; Love between friends; Love between you and the people you love. It is funny, sad, and
reflective. It is not a story, but it holds lots of stories inside it. Cupid’s Revenge is an attempt to bring audiences together in a defiant act of unity and love; dance, physical theatre, and comedy combine to capture the audience’s imaginations, in a great night out that is equally as funny as it is tender and heart breaking. Then, don’t miss the chance to see Regents Opera with their incredible production of Carmen for one night only. Regents Opera is a leading fringe Opera Company specialising in the larger works of the 19th & 20th
centuries. The now touring company offers emerging and established singers a platform to perform major repertoire not often staged outside the major houses. This touring show is directed by Paul Higgins of Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Royal Opera House, and stars renowned Greek mezzo soprano Kassandra Dimopoulou as Carmen and Howard Hutt as her Don Jose in a cast of four, accompanied by their talented pianist and musical director Ben Woodward. Farming & Environment
A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. At this time of year, I can’t but help think of that age old saying ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’... sage words indeed for the promise of the sun in the sky does not yet make for summer warmth. Many a day in the past week or so I have left the house bathed in heat, only to return home later in the day bemoaning the chilly wind. This state of affairs is not assisted by the ever-increasing cost of heating. In the good old days, if I felt a little cooler than comfortable, I’d pop the heating on to take the chill off. But with the threat of our smart meter exposing my profligate pastime, I now can’t run the risk. It makes me wonder how the spiralling cost of living will be impacting on charities and community organisations and I am thankful that lighter,
warmer days are on their way. The farm, being relatively flat, is exposed to the wind, so there is good sport in watching those safely sheltered in the poly tunnel, or tucked up all toasty in the day room, boldly braving the outside - their facial expressions instantly registering the transition. It is days like these that make the farm shop destination of choice for the Co-Farmers. The chance to purchase a coffee or hot chocolate and lose a good half hour or so, (usually just before or just after their scheduled break), is too good to miss! Whilst it means those volunteering in the shop that day don’t get a great deal done, it is a super way to catch up. My last shift in the shop was no exception; there was a steady stream of
Tuesday regulars queueing to tell me all about their weekend and their plans for the forthcoming bank holiday. This particular Tuesday marked my volunteering milestone – a year to the day – and to spend it chatting to the CoFarmers and reminiscing about all that had happened in the past 12 months was the perfect way to mark the
occasion. Perfect too, to receive a visit from the Wessex Water Foundation who were sponsors of the recent Dorset Community of the Year Awards of which both the farm and I were winners. With so much achieved, and so many new friends made in the year, I feel as if the award is not the only accolade I should be celebrating.

Town deli savouring taste of success in
Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users
A deli tasted success when it was pronounced overall winner at the inaugural Wimborne Business Awards. The East Street Deli was also named Indetpendent Business of the Year. Owners Simon and Claire Warren, both 42, only opened the independent delicatessen in June 2020. Simon said: “To win one award made our day, our week, our year, but to win overall business is just incredible. “Our thanks go to all the other businesses in the town, our customers but, above all, our family and our parents who have given us unwavering support. “Without them we wouldn’t have done this.” Claire, who married Simon in 2015, added: “We’re just blown away with the support we’ve received. “We are so fortunate to have such a loyal customer base.” The East Street Deli was among 15 businesses and services honoured at the awards, held at Wimborne’s Allendale House. They were organised by MW Events with the awards ceremony hosted by its
managing director, Nigel Reeve. A total of 243 entries were received for the 15 categories. Wimborne mayor Kelly Webb, who presented the winners with their framed certificates, highlighted the town’s economic strength, describing it as ‘one big success story’. She added: “We’ve seen very little in the way of business failure and empty premises in the town. “That’s not to say that some businesses won’t have
had difficult times. “I’m sure some of you would have had sleepless nights over the last couple of years. “But the strength and character of this town encourages positivity and generous community spirit.” Tammy Sleet, manager of Wimborne Business Improvement District (BID), said they couldn’t believe their good fortune after being approached by Nigel Reeve last year about staging the awards. The BID had talked about holding such an event
for several years. Addressing more than 60 people at the awards, Tammy said: “Today is focused on you and on celebrating our local business owners and our wonderful town. “The business awards have really given a focus to good news stories about the town. “There is so much doom and gloom about the health of town centres at the moment. “While I know things are tough out there, and are probably going to get harder, the business awards give us a chance to pause and

Wessex’s Ted is the app of their eye Blandford-based internet service provider, Wessex Internet, has just launched a new customer app designed and created by Ted LucasRowe, from Pimperne, who recently completed his Masters in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. With the customer at the heart of the mobile app’s creation, Wessex Internet customers are able to manage their accounts, check their bills, see how much data they have used, access help information and contact Wessex Internet’s customer support team directly in the app. Now available to all Wessex Internet customers to download through the Google Play or Apple App stores, the app went through thorough customer research prior to launch and Ted
is constantly working to improve it, his current focus being adding a biometric login (this is considered ideal for people who constantly forget their passwords!).

Ted started teaching himself computer science at home before studying for his Masters. During this one-year course, Ted was required to produce a final project, which he titled Development Of A CrossPlatform Mobile Application For Customer Support.’ This was just the first step in the creation of the new Wessex Internet app. Ted approached Wessex Internet’s CEO Hector Gibson Fleming about developing a specific Wessex Internet customer app for his project. Although Ted had created another app for his studies previously, this would be his first major commercial project. Given Wessex Internet’s size this was an excellent opportunity for Ted to gain insight to all areas of app development. The resulting app helped earn Ted a distinction in his Masters. From inception in July 2021, it took approximately eight months to fully develop the app before releasing it to an initial test group in February 2022. “We could have released
the app a lot sooner than this however we wanted to ensure that it had a strong feature set so that our customers had the best possible experience,” Ted explained. “Building the Wessex Internet app has been an incredible opportunity for a graduate software developer. It has allowed me to enhance my skills across a wide range of development areas from building a user interface, to setting up servers. Wessex Internet has given me the support and freedom I need to fuel my career ambitions,” added Ted. Upon graduation in September 2021 Ted joined as a full time and permanent member of the Wessex Internet team and the company is keen to support him in his professional growth. Wessex Internet is growing fast with plans to rapidly expand its workforce in the next 12 months, including offering apprenticeships and trainee roles to help people start new careers in the telecommunications sector.

Football pitches set to look match fit soon
by Faith Eckersall Football pitches in the BCP Council area could soon be looking far more match fit thanks to a new programme involving the Premier League. The FA, Government and Premier League’s charity, The Football Foundation, has included BCP Council in a group of local authorities selected as part of its new grass pitch pilot programme. The initiative aims to support the improvement of grass pitches across the conurbation over the next 10 years.
BCP was selected following a successful Expression of Interest process in partnership with Dorset County Football Association, which involved ground soil sample tests on 57 grass pitches across 15 sites. After submitting the data, the council will hear back towards the end of July on how much funding it will receive towards its pitch maintenance and renovation programme. The plan will be delivered by the council and other local partners working with The Football Foundation, the
UK’s largest sports charity. BCP Council said it was prioritising sites which needed improvement using information from the Local Football Facility Plans which have been created for every area in England. Facilities and investment lead for the Dorset County Football Association, Kath Purnell, said: “This fantastic initiative will improve the quality of pitches across the local authority area ensuring that grassroots football clubs and players have quality grass pitches on which to train and play matches,
ensuring the sustainability and future growth of football and a greater user experience.” Clubs can also obtain the Football Foundation’s ‘PitchPower’ free web app, that gives every club and organisation the ability to carry out their own grass pitch inspection. Once submitted, organisations will receive an assessment report with bespoke recommendations and advice from the experts at the Grounds Management Association (GMA) on how to improve their pitches.
Sylvain to lead St Tropez super-cycle Former professional footballer Sylvain Distin is part of a team of 10 cyclists attempting to ride 1,300km from Sandbanks to St Tropez in just 10 days. The international pedal-powered challenge, which kicks off on May 18, is believed to be a world first, and every penny raised will go towards the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Sylvain (44) who lives in Poole explains: “I like to push myself and see what I’m capable of, although I’ve never taken on anything quite as big as this before. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve all together as a team... and enjoying St Tropez once we’ve crossed the finish line!” The self-funded mission was the bright idea of Will Irons, inspired by childhood memories of holidays in St Tropez, and brought to life with his brother-in-law Dave Taylor. Dave explains: “We have all been touched significantly by the tragic and shocking events unfolding in Ukraine and want to help by supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee to provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to refugees and displaced families.” For their fellow team mate Jemma Harding (42), the two-wheeled expedition is more than just a physical
challenge – it’s about overcoming an accident that changed her life. For Jemma was involved in a collision with a lorry while she was riding her bike in London, and needed 12 hours of emergency surgery. “I didn’t know if I would be able to walk or cycle again. “After the accident, I moved back home to Dorset to recover, I got stronger and stronger, and I just knew that I would get back on a bike one day.
“I didn’t want to let it defeat me. “It’s going to be really tough, but it is for a really important cause, and I have every confidence in our amazing team.” To support the Sandbanks to St Tropez challenge, visit the JustGiving page: justgiving.com/fundraising/ sandbankstosttropez For more information contact info@sandbankstosttropez.com or call (+44) 07976 766023 Or visit SandbanksToStTropez.com.

A speedy Porsche boost for hospice Porsche Centre Bournemouth has partnered with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care as part of their 30th Anniversary Ball. The sell-out celebratory event takes place on May 12, at St Giles House, Dorset. Jonathan Sullivan, the centre principal said: “We are extremely proud and honoured to be supporting LewisManning Hospice Care and help them celebrate their 30th Anniversary by being their headline event partner. “We will be displaying three Porsche cars at the event and hosting a table on the night. “We have also donated two driving experiences at Silverstone for the auction, as well as providing ‘favours’ for the goodie bags. “We are always keen to be supportive of worthwhile events in our community and are conscious of the excellent work that the hospice delivers to patients and their families in Poole, East Dorset and Purbeck.”
CAR SALES
Corporate partnerships fundraiser Nicki Cluley added: “It is wonderful to have Porsche Centre Bournemouth on board; it will make a huge difference to our ambitious plans to raise sufficient funds at our anniversary event to enable us to recruit an additional nurse at the hospice.” Area community fundraiser Vicki Gray
visited Porsche Centre Bournemouth to meet with Jonathan Sullivan and the pair are pictured in front of a rare 30-year-old Porsche 959, of which only 300 were produced. The car is worth around £1.25million and was the fastest ever production car when it was launched, with its maximum speed of 198mph! About dogs and adder bites
With the weather warming up, adders (the only venomous snake in the UK) have been seen locally and dogs can occasionally be bitten. Although these bites are painful they are rarely fatal. Adders are a protected species and it’s illegal to kill or injure them. They’re easily recognised by a dark ‘zigzag’ stripe along the back and their background colours vary from grey white in the male, to shades of brown or copper in the female. They are in fact quite timid in nature and will not usually bite unless they feel threatened and will prefer to slither away given the chance to do so. However, dogs with their naturally inquisitive nature, can sometimes disturb adders whilst exploring the undergrowth, making them susceptible to being bitten. Most adder encounters occur during their active season between March and October, so it’s advisable to keep your dog on the paths and under control (preferably on a lead)
in areas where they’re known to be. If your dog develops a swelling, normally around the muzzle area where bites usually occur, it could be an adder bite. You should seek immediate veterinary attention for your dog. It’s not advisable to attempt first aid
measures yourself (such as sucking out the venom or applying a tourniquet). Adder bites are potentially serious, but effective treatment is readily available from your vet. Enjoy the sunshine and your walks, but please do take care. www.vetsmiths.co.uk
Vetsmiths was founded by Chris and Sam Devlin, a husband and wife team who wanted a different kind of vet . . . . . . one that’s completely independent so the commitment is simply to the animal and its owner. We’re really good at sniffing out the underlying problem, not just treating the symptoms...

Adorable Toby looking for new home Meet Toby, the 13-yearold Jack Russell. He’s a very active boy for his age and loves his walks, provided he has plenty of opportunity to sniff. He is sociable with other dogs and enjoys being with people, in fact, he is very affectionate and always keen on a bit of lap time. Toby would love a home where he gets plenty of attention and is not left on
his own for long periods. His special diet will need to continue in his new home, however, he’ll be rehomed under a contract where the Waggy Tails Charity assists with vet fees. If you can offer Toby or any of his lovely friends, a forever home or foster home please call the office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit waggytails.org.uk.
Animal charity urges cat neutering by Lorraine Gibson After seeing a recent increase in missing cats and kittens, Blandford and Sturminster Newton Cats Protection is encouraging owners to get their pets neutered via a reduced-price voucher scheme to prevent them straying to find a mate. While the profiles of the missing cats vary, the common factor seems to be that they’re un-neutered. To address this, the charity is offering their £5 neuter and microchip scheme to those claiming benefits or on low incomes. Considering the cost of a neuter and microchip can range from around £70 Mobile Scanning and microchipping and dog training. Fully insured contact Sarah on 07769 323429
to £100, it’s a huge incentive. The missing cat trend is a pattern all across Dorset which Cats Protection say is down to improving weather and the mating season.

Whippet crossed bedlington puppies please phone 07971 546410
Females coming into season are searching for mates with males keenly seeking them out. The problem with this is two-fold. Many females will come back pregnant which means kittens - often unwanted - and the males, by travelling further to meet a lady friend, increase their risk of getting run over or lost. Cats Protection’s message is clear: “Don’t let your cat become another statistic, please get them neutered.” If you live in DT10, DT11, SP5, SP7, SP8 or BH21, call them on 01258 268695 for a voucher and details of participating vets.

Grants available to act on phosphorus reduction
Hot on the heels of BPS applications, a range of grants are available to farmers and land managers within the River Stour catchment who adopt practices that reduce phosphorus inputs to farmland in the Middle Stour and Blackmore Vale areas. Designed to prevent soil erosion and buffer watercourses from run-off, the grants can be used for: • Growing cover crops after maize • Under sowing grass into maize • Growing cover crops after combinable crops • Fencing to exclude livestock from watercourses • Establishing new or wider buffer strips • Arable reversion to zero-input grass • Arable reversion to low/mediuminput grass • Arable reversion to three-year legume fallow Additionally, within a slightly wider area, farmers and land managers can submit expressions of interest for funding to:
• Create leaky ponds • Construct farm wetlands to treat field run-off and ditch/drain flow • Establish new hedgerows • Plant trees and establish small-scale woodland Will Cairns, Graduate Surveyor in
Symonds & Sampson’s Sturminster Newton office can provide further information on the funding criteria ahead of a closing date for applications on May 23, 2022. Contact him on 01258 472244 or at wcairns@symondsandsampson.co.uk.
West Moors plan for 80-bed care home by Nicci Brown An 80-bed care home and church could be built on land off Blackfield Lane, West Moors, for which an environmental impact screening opinion has been sought on behalf of Mr Nick Aris. The 1.9 hectare site in the north-eastern part of West Moors is currently uncultivated land which once formed part of Blackfield Farm, bounded to the north and east by heathland and to the west by residential development. To the south is the Castleman Trailway, the long-distance walking, cycling and horseriding route follow the former Southampton to Dorchester railway line. Vehicular and pedestrian access to the site is via
Blackfield Lane to the west. Blackfield Lane serves residential properties and leads on to The Avenue which in turn junctions with Station Road to the west. The site has been the subject of two previous planning applications for development across the whole of the site, the first including light industrial floorspace, a community hall, church and 60-bed residential care home. It was withdrawn and followed by a similar application with less light industrial, but it was refused planning permission on the grounds of traffic impact, the scale of development and the potential adverse effect on the adjoining internationally designated sites. Clare Bartlett of agent Batcheller Monkhouse for
the applicant say the proposed development has been scaled back from the previous two proposals to use on 1.06 hectares of the total site. “The scheme which is the subject of this Screening request relates to the erection of a 115sqm church, 4,150sqm care home, associated car parking and a biodiversity enhancement area,” she says. “The commercial building has been removed from the proposal in order to address concerns regarding traffic generation and overdevelopment of the site. “This has also allowed for nearly half of the site to be left undeveloped, to be retained as biodiversity land.” She added that access will
remain as per existing, via Blackfield Lane, which does not form part of the adopted highway, and the access point will be upgraded. Impacts on protected species identified as being present at the site (reptiles and bats) will be avoided by retaining a buffer at the east boundary of the site, in combination with the retained habitat at the north of the site and precautionary working methods during construction. Green infrastructure will be provided throughout the built area (including grass-crete parking spaces and provision of additional nectar resources for invertebrates). Comments on the application P/ESC/2022/02568 are open until May 19 on the Dorset Council website.
