drive School celebrates Ofsted report Covid kicks off for

by Faith Eckersall Christchurch’s Priory CE Primary School is celebrating a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating following a recent inspection. Inspectors praised the 155-year-old Wick Lane school for the children’s behaviour and ‘strong, nurturing support from the school staff that builds pupils’ confidence’. The visit followed four years of significant improvement after the previous report in April 2018 rated the school as ‘Requires Improvement’. The 208 pupils attending the school were viewed to be living out the school’s values with pride, they told inspectors that learning is fun, and the school is a happy and safe place for them to be. Headteacher Paul Ruffle said: “The inspection report is testament to the positive difference a community can

Christchurch Rotary Club’s boost for refugees in Poland Christchurch Rotary Club has donated £2,000 to a sister Rotary club in Poland, close to the Ukrainian border. The funds will allow Polish Rotarians to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees. The money is being earmarked to buy shoes and medications for children. Representatives of Christchurch Rotary Club met on a Zoom call with Agnieszka Grzywaczewska, the president of Chelm Rotary Club in east Poland. Talking from her kitchen, late in the

evening after working at the border, and ably assisted by her son Micky, as translator, she explained the work that Rotarians were undertaking. Describing the influx of refugees, she highlighted the urgent need for shoes,

vitamins and prescription medicines. Agnieszka explained that Chelm’s hospitals and train station are extremely busy with refugees and that two large night shelters have been set up to help provide temporary accommodation and food. She is also working to protect Ukrainian women and children arriving in Poland from the risk of peopletrafficking. Christchurch Rotary Club will be organising a street collection in the town on Monday, April 11, to raise further funds for its Ukrainian appeal.

by Faith Eckersall Ferndown Upper School has made it through to the final shortlist of the Design Museum’s Design Ventura 2021, the free design and enterprise competition for students aged 13-16. More than 110 secondary schools across the UK entered the project, which invited students to follow a brief to design a product that improves everyday life. Their design, the Flippy Book, is a flip-book that mixes and matches iconic designs, letting the user explore their creativity. The students will now pitch their concepts to a panel of professionals in London. The winning team will then be announced at a celebration event at the Design Museum, with their winning idea later going on sale at the museum.

Letters

We promised to protect Ukraine I wholeheartedly agree with everything your correspondent Myk Hamilton had to say with one exception: the assertion that he objected to sending lethal aid in his letter, (Let’s show our compassion for the people of Ukraine). It may have escaped his attention, but the Ukrainian people are being subjected to genocide by Putin’s overwhelming strength. The Ukrainians did not start the war but were forced into protecting their families from Russian looters, the cold-blooded murdering of woman and children refugees along with all manner of depraved behaviours that include raping schoolgirls and murdering trapped civilians with the constant bombing. Against such overwhelming

odds, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky is asking Nato for aid in the form of weapons, food and medicine. He has entered into every conceivable negotiation with the Russians, but Putin is determined to steal their rich resources (grain, gas and oil) to fund his next war on the rest of none-Nato countries. It’s worth mentioning that Britain, along with Russia, USA and Ukraine entered into an agreement in 1994 that said if the Ukrainians abolished their nuclear weapons, we would collectively protect them from attack. We now know that was Ukraine’s big mistake. Dangerous suggestions cost lives. Mike Fry Poole

New car park fees in place New car park charges are now in effect in most Dorset Council car parks. The charges affect eight car parks in Blandford, Penny’s Lodge in Ferndown, Jenner Close, Potters Wheel and the Hub in Verwood and 10 car parks in Wimborne. Dorset Council says prices were changed for consistency, after the amalgamation of district councils, which were issuing 76 diferent permits. People can benefit from cheaper prices via two new permits, said the council. Short Stay Permits provide parking for two hours every day and cost £78 per year. The Flexi-Stay Permit provides unlimited parking in the majority of Dorset Council long stay car parks and free two-hour parking every day in the majority of short stay car parks. It costs £25 a month or £260 per year.

Homes bid rejected Quiz night raises £1k A bid to build affordable homes on open land at the rear of 17 Hillbury Road, Alderholt, has been rejected by Dorset Council planners. The application was originally for 34 dwellings, but revised plans submitted in August last year reduced the number to 27 on the 0.9ha site to the north east of the village, close to Alderholt Chapel, the Bonfire Hill SNCI, and a public right of way. There were objections from nearly 40 residents and a number of statutory consultees to the proposal by Sovereign Housing and Coda Homes. Grounds for refusal

included the unacceptable form of development which failed to give sufficient amenity space to future occupants, the negative impact on the character of the rural area, and the ‘contrived’ access close to nearby properties. Other grounds for refusal were the failure to show there would be no adverse effects on the designated site of nature conservation and heathland or offer mitigation, insufficient drainage information to demonstrate that the development would not increase flood risk, and failure to complete a legal agreement securing affordable housing and biodiversity mitigation.

The 28th Annual Wimborne in Bloom Wine & Wisdom Quiz Evening returned last month at the Allendale Centre on the exact anniversary of the first quiz held. Twenty four teams pitted their wits against each other with eight rounds of questions including such subjects as ‘Garden Trivia’ and ‘Food’. The closely-fought contest was won by Allendale Bridge Club who were awarded the Eco Composting Trophy. Each member of the team also received a bottle of red wine. In joint second were the Wimborne-Valognes

Twinning Association and the Museum Masterminds from the Museum of East Dorset, formerly known as the Priest House Museum under which name they were the winners in that first year. The raffle raised £376 and thanks to Barclays Bank Matched Fundraising Scheme within their work in the community programme well over £1,000 will have been raised. And all being well next year’s Quiz Evening will take place on Friday, March 3, 2023, so book the date in your diaries now! Anthony Oliver

MPs’ round-up

How NHS spending will be monitored Eyebrows were raised during the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Spring Statement when he said that plans to reform health care ‘will ensure every pound of taxpayers’ money is well spent’. As the statement was so completely at odds with recent revelations about chronic waste in the NHS, I put down a Parliamentary Question enquiring how the commitment to ensure that every pound is well spent would be monitored and delivered. Having voted against the increase in National Insurance contributions my scepticism about commitments to end the waste of taxpayers’ money is well known. The response to my question is set out below so that hard-pressed taxpayers faced with the highest taxes for a generation know the content: ‘a new Cabinet

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE Committee on Efficiency and Value for Money has been launched which will clamp down on wasteful spending and ensure a relentless focus on delivering the highest quality services at the best value.’ On the NHS specifically the Chief Secretary to the Treasury added: ‘to support this goal and ensure that every penny is spent wisely the NHS have

agreed to double their annual efficiency target from 1.1% to 2.2% a year, freeing up £4.75billion to fund NHS priority areas over the next three years. ‘The NHS will report regularly to Government on action it is taking to meet this commitment. ‘The Government has also launched a review of leadership in health and social care which will report to the Secretary of State in early 2022.’ On the issue of enforcement, the Minister said: ‘the Treasury will hold the NHS and the Department of Health and Social Care to account for meeting the new efficiency target including via the new Cabinet Committee’. Please let me have your views and any evidence of NHS waste and inefficiency. If you wish your identity to remain anonymous, I shall respect that because the culture of

secrecy and hostility to whistleblowers in the NHS is well understood and is indeed part of the problem. n My thanks on your behalf go to PC1473 Guy Matthews of Ferndown on his retirement. He gave 28 years’ service as a firearms officer to protecting the public as well as working for the UK Police contingent attached to the UN in Bosnia. Guy and so many other public servants like him give us cause to celebrate in otherwise grim times. n Another good news story to finish. A native Ukrainian Christchurch resident applied for visas for her elderly parents to come here to escape the war. She contacted me because while one visa was issued quickly the other was not. My secretary resolved the case within hours and both parents are now safely in the UK.

Red faces all round at

Care home residents and staff let their hair down, dressed up in Red Noses and glasses, donned crazy hats, wigs, feathers and pom poms, and enjoyed lots of games and activities to raise money for Comic Relief. The day of fun at Colten

Care’s 21 homes in the south included cupcake sales, singalongs of vintage comedy songs, hair dyeing sessions, fancy dress parties and exercise bike challenges. Amberwood House in Ferndown said hello to Brotherhood Of Man singer and former companionship team member Nicky Stevens who returned to do her bit for the appeal. Nicky was happy to join in with the dressing-up activities and even serenaded resident Ray Cox, left, with a rendition of the song Where Did You Get That Hat? Iris Barnes, who recently moved into Kingfishers in

care homes

New Milton, said: “It was my first time experiencing Red Nose Day events here at the home and I thank everyone for letting me take part in all this.” Operations director Elaine Farrer said: “Our residents and teams don’t need much excuse to dress up and have fun. “We’re always delighted when

Red Nose Day comes round.” In the past two years, Comic Relief organisers say funding has helped 11.7million people at risk from a wide range of challenging circumstances. This year, a key focus is encouraging donations to support civilians fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Joseph and his amazing charity haircut

by Lorraine Gibson When it comes to fundraising methods, 10-year-old Wimborne schoolboy, Joseph Mumford-Chell is a cut above. Wanting to do something to help the children suffering in Ukraine, he hatched a plan that will end up helping not just them, but children with cancer, too. Having never had his hair cut since the day he was born, Joseph’s luxuriant locks were so long that he tied them back in a pony tail so he decided the time had come to have them cut off to raise money for children’s charities. The result was manyfold. Money raised from his cut of kindness, including considerable pledged cash boosts from family and friends, will be donated to charitable organisations, including War Child and Unicef and Joseph’s severed plait of hair has already been sent to the Little Princess Trust to make realisticlooking wigs for youngsters losing their hair due to cancer treatments. When I call to speak with him at his grandmother Jill’s house, he is on his computer

like a typical 10-year-old but he’s happy to forgo the lure of the screen to talk about his head-turning project. I ask how he felt when Becky, the stylist at Swaffield’s barbers, went to work with the scissors. “I was nervous and excited but I like it, it feels easy. We measured the plait and it was 12 inches.” Most of Joseph’s teachers and friends at Allenbourn School approve of his new look. “They said it was good and they said I looked like this other boy in school.” On how he hoped it would help the children, he replies: “I hope that one day we

won’t need to raise money because there will be peace.” And what would he say if he could speak to Ukrainian people? “Take this money and have a good life,” he answers with the endearing optimism of a child. On where his inspiration came from, he says: “My Grumpy always helped people. He was so kind and he loved Ukraine and he helped Ukrainian people before so that’s why I wanted to do it.” ‘Grumpy’ was the nickname of Joseph’s late grandfather, Tim Mumford, the much-loved headteacher of Beaucroft School, Colehill, from 1978 to 1992. Jill, his wife and former head of

Hampreston First School, says the grandchildrens’ pet name for him was ironic since ‘he was the least grumpy person on Earth.’ Tim was involved in global aid missions, including with the War Child charity and he was part of the Convoy of Hope that travelled to Ukraine to assist with the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Joseph says: “I know he did a lot to help and Unicef, I know is a good charity, too.” And on that subject, Jill has exciting news about Joseph’s big adventure so far: “Yesterday we paid in £1,000 to Unicef and £1,000 to War Child! “To make things even more exciting, apparently the Government is doubling donations - certainly to War Child! On the other charity benefitting, Joseph says: “I heard about the Little Princess Trust (his sister also donated some hair to them), so I just thought I should do it.” As a parting shot, I ask whether his long hair had ever got in the way, to which he replies, “Yes, with a toy remote-control snake!”

Get fitter at your own pace When you get out of breath exercising, do you hear a voice in your head telling yourself that this is because ‘you’re unfit’? Instead, congratulate yourself and say, ‘this is me getting fitter’. To improve our fitness it’s good to get a little out of breath as that means we’re working and exerting ourselves. It’s only by doing this that we’ll get fitter. Our bodies adapt to exercise and if we repeat an exercise, over time, it will start to become less challenging. To improve again, we have to up the level slightly and repeat the process again and again. One workout, one walk or run isn’t going to ‘get us fit’, it’s a start, but fitness is a bit like laundry; if you want clean clothes you have to

keep doing it! When we talk about cardio fitness, what this means, in the simplest terms, is getting out of breath. For different people, that will happen at different stages and with different levels of activity. We’re all different. So cardio exercise might be walking, brisk or speed walking, hiking, chopping wood, gardening, housework, jogging, running, cycling, swimming, dancing, roller skating – any exercise making you feel a little breathless. This is great for maintaining or improving our cardiovascular system (hence ‘cardio’) which is broadly our heart health, lung function and the regulation of blood pressure. Heart health is close to all

our hearts and it’s good to aim for at least 150 minutes a week exercising at a level where we’re slightly breathless. If this sounds a lot, it breaks down into a neat thirty minutes, five days a week. You can of course mix it up, do longer or shorter busts depending on your schedule and your fitness. Generally, something is better than nothing. A good measure of how hard you are, or should be working, is so that you feel a little breathless but can still hold a conversation and talk in sentences. There’s no need to sweat cardio. The best cardio exercise for you is going at your own pace and doing something you enjoy. Remember, you can rest and resume at any time.

Katrina Keeling is a Wimborne-based Personal Trainer. She coaches at WOW Ladies Fitness and independently.kkfitness.co.uk kkeelingfitness@gmail.com It doesn’t need to be intense, but, like that laundry, it does need doing! Advice given is general. What to expect from hypnotherapy

By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com

Hypnosis is often shrouded in mystery thanks to the way it is portrayed in public culture.I wonder what you know about it beyond images of swinging watches, mind control and hypnosis stage shows? It’s a shame there are so many misconceptions, because in a therapeutic setting, hypnosis provides one of the easiest, fastest and most enjoyable routes to personal change. In fact, I sometimes seem to be able to help people when nothing else has proved effective for them. So what can you expect from a hypnotherapy session? Hypnotherapy does not require me to know your entire life history. Usually all I need is an overview of the problem, how it impacts your life and what your beliefs are about that problem. Then I focus on

HOW you want to feel, look or sound - how you want to show up in the world once this is no longer a problem for you. To start, we usually play a few imagination games, as this allows you to see how your imagination is key to creating powerful change through hypnosis. Most people leave their first session with a new sense of awe at their own power, and a real optimism that they can use it to create a better life for themselves. Sometimes I will do some ‘eyes open’ hypnosis, which

by Lorraine Gibson In the current financially-strapped times, it is not always easy to put charity to the fore, yet so many people and small businesses in Dorset somehow manage to rise to the challenge. This determination to help others works as a lifeline to numerous charities that are in constant need of funding. One such small firm is Coconut Lime, a Sherborne-based professional recruitment agency set up in 2018 by Rowena Young. Having seen the devastation a cancer diagnosis can bring, its director Rowena decided to support Young Lives vs Cancer, a charity that supports children and young people who have cancer and their families, helping them find the strength to face everything that diagnosis can throw at them. Rowena, who donated some of her firm’s profits to the organisation, said: “I have been a long-term supporter of Young Lives vs Cancer since 2010, as I have several friends who have had children with cancer and heard about the difference

is usually quite interactive and fun. We learn best when things are fun - just look at any child at play and you will see them soaking up information like a little sponge. As adults we often let our inhibitions or fear of being judged get in the way - yet when you engage your mind with a sense of childlike playfulness it becomes possible to make great leaps in unconscious learnings. My role is to help you learn how to move from problem state to solution state - so it’s much more enjoyable and effective to do that by bringing some fun into the equation. These aren’t stuffy, boring or emotionally draining sessions where you will be forced to relive your past traumas. That’s not helpful to anyone! I often teach techniques to alleviate anxiety or other unwanted feelings. These might include ‘tapping’ - also known as EFT (emotional freedom technique) breathwork or anchoring, and my sessions all include

elements of NLP (neurolinguistic programming)and coaching. Finally, sessions always finish with me guiding you into a deep and profound hypnotic trance. You can think of it a little bit like a guided visualisation, except that you are fully active in creating this experience - hypnosis never means you are ‘asleep’. This is the moment when real and lasting change can be installed - just like installing new software on a computer. The new programs have been written and are there, ready to be accessed whenever you need them. Most people find hypnosis to be a deeply restorative and enjoyable experience reflected in the fact that the most common word I hear at the end of a session is ‘Wow!’ My support doesn’t stop there

though. When clients leave my therapy room they have

my continued support at all times.

that in the past year, we’ve been able to donate £2,085 to them via a scheme called Work for Good.” Work for Good enables small businesses to support the charities they care about. Liz Blunt, of Young Lives vs Cancer , said: “We are really grateful to Rowena. Last year, there were 60 children and young people from Dorset who were being treated for cancer, it’s not something you expect as a parent and many families need a lot of support. She added: “My colleagues based on the Piam Brown Ward and Teenage and Young Adult Ward at Southampton Hospital (the specialist hospital for the majority of young cancer patients from Dorset) do a fantastic job at providing support that is practical, emotional and financial for the whole family. “As a charity we don’t receive any government support.” If you’re a small business and want to get involved with the Work for Good scheme, visit younglivesvscancer.org.uk and coconutlime.co.uk/.

limit, there’s no time to stop looking after yourself nor is there a wrong time to start. And there’s certainly never a cut-off date on what colours you can wear. In fact, the older you get, the more important it is to wear confident colours. My clients range from 11 to 80-plus and see me for a variety of treatments, be it a massage for relaxation or keeping pain at bay, a pedicure because they can no longer reach their feet or a facial to treat acne. You’re never too old to start looking after yourself and as I always say, if we don’t look after ourselves - who will look after us? I’m no spring chicken myself, I’ve had two kids and I’ve seen a lot in my time as a therapist! Unfortunately, I’ve heard too many times in my career that people have been put off going into salons, spas or seeing therapists because they’re embarrassed, don’t feel comfortable or just don’t know what to expect. My ethos has always been about being natural and being yourself. I aim to welcome everyone and make

people feel comfortable. Your treatments and any requirements will always be explained to you, your modesty will always be maintained – even if you’re a more confident person who’s stripping off before the door has fully closed behind you! I’ve literally seen it all in my career - people of all shapes and sizes, paper pants worn as a bra, baby-bump stretch marks, saggy boobs, mastectomies, acne, hairy chins, scars and probably as many private parts as a midwife sees! It doesn’t faze me - all bodies and genders are welcome in my treatment room. It’s great to see more men taking time out to care for themselves too. It saddens me when I hear about bad experiences people have when getting treatments, how they have been treated and how that made them feel. I want people to enjoy the experience of having treatments from start to finish, not just the end result. I will also never forget the moments that clients have opened up to me or braved trying a treatment for the first time. I’ve seen them pluck up courage to ask a ‘really embarrassing question’ that I’ve actually been asked hundreds of times. It’s giving people that confidence that makes me love my job. So if you’ve never stepped foot in a salon, spa, treatment room- what’s stopping you? It’s certainly not your age!

Little nothings that mean everything Little nothings can make up a world of everything. And yet they often exist without us really realising or appreciating that they are even there. Every day we trudge a path, blind to the enormity of the little nothings that surround us. Far too busy to see, to feel, to hear, to taste or even smell them! Today, I urge you to take time to think and find those little nothings, for you are surrounded by them, they are on you, in you and your mind is filled with them. It could be the feeling of the soft warmth of carpet beneath your toes. The first sip of coffee in the morning. Warming your hands around a mug of tea. The head massage at the hairdressers. The fact that you twist a tap and hot water gushes out or, with a flick of a switch, you have

light, the heat of a hairdryer, sound from the radio. You can find food in the cupboard, a fridge keeping things fresh, a teabag that has been on an adventurous crusade to get to your cup. It could be the glasses which enable you to read, the pen with which you can write, the photo of a loved one that you can look at fondly, the ability to speak to someone with a press of a button. Perhaps it’s the trinkets and mementos that you have reminding you of happy times. Maybe the scent from a walk through bluebell woods. The feel of water cascading over your body in the shower. The prickle of heat from sunshine. The list is endless and yet, as we blunder forward with our lives, we often overlook those little nothings, as just nothing. Look around you now and

spot your little nothings. Use your fingertips to gently feel the plentiful array of textures that surround you. The clothes on your skin, the coarseness of wood, the coolness of stone. Listen deeply and recognise the sounds. The gentle snore of a dog, the chirp of a bird, a distant engine, the whirr of a laptop, the sound of your fingers typing. Savour, taste and enjoy your food, rather than gobbling it up, the temperature, or spiciness. Where did it come from? What journey did it take to get to your plate? Reach for a perfume and identify all the various notes that make up the exquisite fragrance. Inhale deeply until the back of your nose tingles. And finally... I’m sure you’ve been in receipt of a little nothing from somebody else at some point in your life,

Maybe a smile came your way, a ‘good morning’, a nice comment or gesture, a chat about this and that at the checkout, someone letting you pull out at a junction in your car. How did it make you feel? I hope it briefly warmed your heart. One little nothing, so small, almost inconsequential, and so easy to deliver, can be huge to someone else. So today, maybe you could pass on a little nothing to someone, for that little nothing to you, could be everything to someone else.

Caring canine to help Ella’s struggle by Lorraine Gibson In a desperate bid to enable their teenage daughter to live some semblance of a normal and fulfilled life, a Dorset family is trying to raise funds to buy an assistance dog. While her peers are seeing their pals, studying for GCSEs and doing all the other things that most 15-year-olds do, Ella Houlton can only dream about them. Ella from Poole is autistic, and has ADHD. She was born with the conditions, however it wasn’t until she was eight that she started noticeably struggling with them. Life has become increasingly challenging for her and her family as her situation has evolved and worsened, with a recent diagnosis of Tourette’s being the latest blow. Her dad, Steven says: “What’s particularly tough is Ella has always struggled to leave the house to go out,

particularly to school, because of her autism. “But since her Tourette’s, she is pretty much house-bound. “She finds it very difficult being around other people as her tics means she swears and says rude words to strangers.” He adds: “Her tics also make her run into roads, sit in puddles and fall to her knees or on her back, so when she does go out she needs a wheelchair. “Her quality of life has massively deteriorated. She is unable to be a teenager.” Steven adds: “Unfortunately she is now unable to attend school at all so Wendy (Ella’s mum) has had to quit work to care for her. “She is being offered home tuition, which at the moment she isn’t engaging with and she’s in a special-provision school which can no longer meet her needs due to her declining mental health.”

The family’s hopes now lie in finding Ella a specially-trained four-legged companion. “I did some internet research,” says Steven, “and found information on assistance dogs and what amazing support they can offer.” Unfortunately, he and Wendy also discovered that the wait time to get one via a charity is two to four years, by which time Ella would no longer be eligible age-wise. Immediate action was needed. “We decided to do a ‘go fund me’ to help us go down the

owner training route,” he says. “The price for the dog and the training is very expensive but it’s the only route that we feel is now available for Ella. “The dogs do tasks like deeppressure therapy, know when a tic attack will happen before it happens and up to 30 other useful things. “With Ella’s love of dogs we feel a trained dog could improve the quality of life for her and for us as a family. “We’ve been borrowing a family’s golden retriever dog for the last few weeks and have noticed a massive, positive change.” Ella has a sister who’s 13 but the family struggles to do anything as a group . “We’d love to be able to go out all together and for my wife and I to be able to go out but Ella won’t be left with anybody or on her own.” If you’d like to contribute, visit: gofund.me/faf80f07.

Map out the decorating!

Home & Garden

Jo Green is a former allotmenteer, forager, amateur herbalist, pickler and jam maker who squeezed her allotment greenery into her tiny garden

We stumbled upon a yard sale. Luckily for us, the sellers seem to have had a great love for travel with dozens of maps going for a song! We had come out to get a break from painting and decorating – which was not going smoothly! The maps offered a great solution to a tricky decorating issue. Yellow was perfect when he was 11 years old but now as a young man he required something more ...well manly. We had chosen a dark chocolate colour paint seduced by sophisticated interior design online. There was no getting round

it - the brown was beginning to make the room look like a dark cave! We had just one wall left to paint. I grabbed ‘The Isle of Arran’ and our son went for ‘New York City’ - other family members chose maps and by the time we went home it was like we were planning a travel gap year! I just pinned a few up with steel push pins to see how he liked it. It certainly brightens the room up and breaks up the solid block of colour. I am coveting the rest of the maps right now, pouring over ‘Greece and The Islands’ while the snow falls here in Dorset!

Community GARDEN Larder seeks MAINTENANCE Hedge and volunteers by Hannah Hobbs-Chell Ferndown Community Support is opening the FCS Community Larder on April 13. Operating from the rear of Ferndown Day Centre, which we have kindly been offered the use of (thank you all at the Day Centre), we will have a fridge, freezer and dry store and be open to anybody who can make use of short use-by and past best-before food from retailers for free. We will also be able to take urplus unopened goods, or cooked and baked goods from individuals, subject to a few conditions. The dual aims of this scheme being both waste reduction and food poverty alleviation. We are really excited about this, and have a great group of core volunteers setting this up, but we desperately need more now to help wo/man the larder during the afternoons, and collect the food from supermarkets and retailers at various times of the week. All volunteers will be provided with a Food Hygiene Course, optional uniform and fuel costs. We have other volunteering opportunities also, so please do get in touch via phone or our website at: ferndowncommunitysupport. org.uk, where you will find a volunteer registration form. You can also phone our helpline on 01202 936121. A massive thank-you to all our volunteers, and to those businesses and organisations that have supported us, including Moordown Contractors, Tesco’s, Dorset Council, Ferndown Town Council, Ferndown Day Centre, and others.

Talking Italian, part 1

As you know, Martin and I love to travel, but our wings have been clipped during Covid. To make up for it, we decided to try a new lasagne recipe and imagine ourselves back in Rome. When we were there, we ate in a restaurant called Old Marconi on a couple of nights. It was like an old fashioned beer kellar and had lots of radio equipment around the walls. (Hence the name Marconi!) It is one of the oldest Beer Houses, as they call them, in Rome and its just 10 minutes away from the main train station. Given that Rome is known for being pricey, this was one of the cheapest that we found with half a litre of wine for just 5 euros! (It was a few

They were really good, but eerie. The rest of the bones are arranged to make arches and designs and even light fittings. Back to the lasagne, it says on the recipe that this will serve 4, well we had it for 2 days in a row and then we had 2 portions left. It’s a very filling meal.

years ago). I had gnocchi, I always pronounce the ‘G’ when saying it, which makes Martin laugh. He also laughs when I talk about ‘phishing’ instead of pronouncing it ‘fishing’! I have previously mentioned that he teases me a lot about my Dorset accent. We visited the Santa Maria Church, which has a Capuchin Monk Cemetery attached. In the chapels there were the bones of 4,000 monks artistically arranged into tableaus.

Ingredients For the ragu: 2 tbsp olive oil 900gm beef mince 2 onions, roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 level tbsp plain flour 150ml beef stock 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly 3 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp chopped thyme 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes For the lasagne: 12 lasagne sheets 75g mature cheddar, grated

Method Preheat the oven to160C/325F/ Gas 3. Heat a large frying pan until hot and add the oil. Cook onion and garlic until softened. Add the mince and cook until browned. Add the flour and stock and bring to the boil. Add the redcurrant tomato purée and thyme, stir well. Stir in the canned tomatoes. Bring to the boil, then simmer for about 20 mins Make a cheese sauce Using a 2-pint shallow ovenproof dish, layer the meat, then a layer of sauce, then a layer of pasta. Repeat ending with a layer of pasta. Season. Sprinkle over the cheddar. Cook in the middle of the oven for about 45 minutes - or until golden brown on top, bubbling around the edges and the pasta is soft.

Getting the point during asparagus season by Lorraine Gibson According to British Asparagus, the ultimate spring green, dubbed the Usain Bolt of the veggie world, can grow 10cm in a single day and can improve your libido... It can also help cure hangovers, protect the liver against toxins, promote healthy bacteria in the large intestine and is rich in immunity-boosting vitamin C. Oh, and it cooks almost as quickly as it takes Bolt to burn up a track! Small wonder, then, that April 23, the official start of the season for the perky green spear, is cause for such celebration, especially with chefs, who prize its unfussy fabulousness. With this in mind, here are two super-simple recipes that let the star of the show, the asparagus, do the talking. Roasted British Asparagus with Chilli and Lime Butter Cooking time: 8 minutes

Preparation time: 5 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 100g butter 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely diced 2 tbs fresh coriander, finely chopped ½ tsp cumin seeds, roughly ground juice ½ lime 2 bundles British asparagus Salt and pepper for seasoning 1 lime for garnish Method Bring the butter to room temperature then mix in the chilli, coriander, ground cumin and lime juice, add a good twist of black pepper then place onto a sheet of clingfilm. Roll into a sausage shape then chill in the fridge. Trim the ends of the asparagus and place on a roasting tray, drizzle with some oil, season and roast in an oven set at 200C/ 180C fan for 6-8 minutes. Place the asparagus spears onto serving plates and top with a slice of the butter,

then serve with a wedge of lime. British asparagus, poached egg and hollandaise on a crumpet Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Preparation time: 5 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients For the hollandaise sauce: 150g butter 2 egg yolks 1 dessert spoon of white wine vinegar Juice of ½ lemon Salt and pepper For the crumpets 250g British asparagus 4 large eggs 4 crumpets Fresh chives, chopped (optional) Method To make the hollandaise, melt the butter in a small sauce pan and skim off any white solids that float to the surface, leave on a low heat. In a heatproof bowl whisk the two eggs yolks and white wine vinegar until smooth. Bring a small pan of water to a simmer and sit the bowl containing the egg mixture

over the pan to create a bainmarie. Very slowly while continuing to whisk the egg mixture, pour the melted butter in bit by bit. Continue until you have a creamy smooth hollandaise. If the mix starts to get too hot lift the bowl off the heat and continue to whisk. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon and season to taste. To keep warm until ready to serve. Bring a shallow wide pan of water to a simmer then add the asparagus to blanch for 2-3 minutes then set aside. Crack your 4 eggs into 4 separate ramekins, gently lower each ramekin into the simmering water and tip the egg into the pan. Simmer for 4-5 minutes. Whilst your eggs are cooking toast your crumpets. To assemble, divide the toasted crumpets between 4 plates. Top with asparagus, poached egg and a serving of warm hollandaise. If using sprinkle over some chopped chives. Serve immediately.

pesto, blitz together the roughly chopped watercress, garlic and cashew nuts in a processor, puree them lightly. Drizzle in the olive oil, pureeing in spurts until your desired consistency is achieved. Stir in parmesan cheese and season to taste.

Method Quarter the nectarines and in a hot griddle pan, lay them on one side. Try not to move them until it’s time to flip them over – around a minute on each side should do. Country show springs to life

by Lorraine Gibson Dancing sheep, local food and rural pursuits are just some of the attractions at the county’s newest country show which springs into life later this month. The Spring Countryside Show is at Turnpike Showground between Gillingham and Shaftesbury April 23 and 24, with the theme ‘Bring Spring to Life’. More than 50 exhibits, demos and must-sees promise a weekend, jampacked with open-air and indoor fun for all the family. Marvel at the countryside skills of the farrier, woodcarver, blacksmith, stick-maker and coppicer and maybe try your hand at a bit of willow weaving. At the ‘Rural’ ring, heavy horse logging, terrier racing, gun dogs and horseback falconry are the order of the day, and in the ‘Woodland’ arena the famous Dorset Axemen will battle it out against the clock to chop through vast tree stumps. The Farm Yard has a funny sheep show, farm machinery and goat-milking, with the milk transformed into delicious ice cream! And in the classic cars, military vehicles, autojumble and steam engines area, a high platform offers a fascinating birds-eye view into the inner workings of

the massive machines. Green-fingered sorts should head for the gardens, floral displays and garden goodies and foodies can indulge at the cookery area with local produce and recipe ideas in the Cookery Theatre. A festival area with live music, even more food and local tipples will open until 10pm on the Saturday so visitors can enjoy a festival vibe under the stars. James Cox, event organiser said: “We’re so excited to bring this new country show to Turnpike showground. “The arrival of spring is always such a positive time of year and there really is something for everyone.”

It’s organised by the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show team that brings the renowned annual Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show to the county every August. Tickets from £8.50 for adults and £1 for children - but the prices will increase once a specific quota is reached! Visit springcountrysideshow. co.uk or call 01747 823955.

This will take place on the Memorial Hall Playing Field. To mark the Queen’s reign, a special anthem has been written and will be sung by the choir The Choral Society is always looking for new members and we are at this moment in particular need of both tenors and basses, but all voices are welcome, both male and female. Arts & Entertainments AUCTION: The Vamps and, below, artist Pete Thompson

Vamps ramp it up for auction by Faith Eckersall Vamps fans will soon have the chance to battle it out for a unique signed canvas. The canvas will be one of many to be auctioned online later this year for Christchurch Hospital’s Brick By Brick Appeal to replace the existing Macmillan Unit at the grounds of Christchurch Hospital. The unit provides palliative care and support for more than 1,600 people and their families every year. The Vamps’ canvas is part of a series of designs, with doodles, sketches and lyrics by well-known names from the worlds of TV, sport, art and music, ‘brought to life’ by artists and then auctioned on eBay for Macmillan’s Christchurch appeal. Connor Ball and fellow band members James, Tristan and Bradley have created ‘Can We Dance’, a canvas featuring their signatures, which has been transformed into a miniwork of art by Poole artist Pete Thompson. Pete works in acrylic paint and liquid graphite pencil and is known for combining the ordinary and the extraordinary to produce dreamlike works.

One of his early prints, ‘Doodle’, was bought to hang on the walls of the Houses of Parliament. His transformation of The Vamps’ canvas was inspired by one of their most famous hits, Can We Dance – the canvas song choice chosen by ex-Dorset resident and band member James McVey. Pete said: “The Vamps fans will know there are some really quirky scenes in the video for the song, with band members hanging upside down and strangely enough, a whole room of plastic soft play balls, hence my designs.” He said he was glad to be involved in the Canvas For

Tristan, who grew up in Witchampton and attended Dumpton School, Wimborne, received the award for visual effects at the Baftas on March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall and then at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 27. This success follows his Oscar for visual effects for First Man in 2019. Tristan, 43, told us: ‘It’s an amazing feeling just to be nominated and recognised by my peers and Academy members, but even more exhilarating to have my name called out as one of the winners. “It is my second time receiving the award and I can tell you it feels just as exciting (and nerve-racking) the second time around!” After attending Bournemouth (Grammar) School Tristan went to Teesside University to study Creative Visualisation and graduated in 2001. His glittering career started at the Jim Henson Company in 2003. He joined Double Negative (DNEG*) at their London HQ as a compositor in 2004 working on digital visual effects (VFX) used for the Harry Potter series, the James Bond movie Quantum Of Solace, John Carter, The Dark

In 2015 Tristan relocated from Dorset to Vancouver, Canada to work on more recent films including Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and Bladerunner 2049. In 2017 he started work as Visual Effects Supervisor with First Man - a film following the career of American Astronaut Neil Armstrong. Tristan was nominated for a Bafta award for Best VFX but instead won the Oscar in 2019. He began working on the

new Dune Movie (Part 1) and was on location in Jordan and Budapest. The film was released in October 2021. He was awarded a Bafta and Oscar in March 2022 - both for Best VFX. As for the future Tristan said: “I’m unable to share what I’m moving onto next unfortunately, but I am changing companies, moving from Dneg to Industrial Light and Magic for the next exciting stage in my career’.

Farming & Environment

A day at the farm

with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. Spring has well and truly sprung at High Mead Farm, and although we are due another cold snap, we have all been relishing the sunshine and making the most of the warmer ground; perfect conditions for planting. Peas have been our crop of choice this week, with the first rows sown. The horticultural team is already harvesting the first spring crops: spinach, spring onions, mangetout and kale, available freshly picked by request at the farm shop. Our hens and ducks are

also evidently enjoying the warmer weather by prolifically laying, so much so that, for once, we have more eggs than customers. A rare event indeed! Luckily, with the completion of our training kitchen and a very generous donation from Ferndown Golf Club which is funding the upgrade of our fire alarm system, we will soon be able to make the most of any surplus food stock by teaching our CoFarmers to cook using the produce they harvest. I’m told that duck eggs make for super light sponges and

are perfect in pastry making too. I can’t wait to taste-test the results. As the warmer days remind us that summer is on the way, we are thankful too for a kind donation from Ferndown Town Council, who are covering the cost of completing a shower room for our less mobile Co-Farmers. In summer, the team tends to get hot and dusty, and it is a welcome relief for our hard workers to be able to shower off before returning home. Weeds, like the sun, are making a strong comeback and

they are keeping our team of Co-Farmers, staff, and volunteers very busy indeed. This year we are varying our home grown produce and in addition to the usual seasonal veg, which will shortly include peppers and lettuce, we are going to be growing more fruit. The Co-Farmers are very much looking forward to planting new fruit canes, gifted by the team at JP Morgan. Better still, JP Morgan are sending a team to help us plant them too! Spring also signals the first of our staff and volunteer trips

Harry set to tee off in memory of his Nan

by Lorraine Gibson A Bournemouth golf pro whose tattoos, colourful clothes and dyed hair once saw him banned from some clubhouses has proven you can’t judge a book by its cover. Big-hearted Harry Shaw, 29, from Winton and known as the ‘Tattooed Golf Coach’, is taking part in 25 competitions across the UK and Europe this season and will donate half his winnings to the Christchurch charity which helped care for his terminally-ill grandmother. The money will go to Macmillan Caring Locally, which supports the Macmillan Unit Hospice in Christchurch. “My Nan, Helen Hannant, died a month ago aged 86 following a brave battle with cancer,” says Harry. “She was emphatic she wanted to stay at home during her final weeks and she was able to do this with the help of my mum, my aunties and Debbie White, advanced nurse specialist at the Macmillan Unit. He adds: “The care the Mac Unit offered my Nan was incredible - I cannot thank Debbie in particular, enough. “Nan spoke so highly of her and when I said I’d fundraise for the unit, she was very happy.” Harry, who

CLOSE-KNIT: Harry’s Nan Helen Hannant with Harry, right, and his brothers Lewy Shaw, back, and Spencer Savage

started playing golf at the age of six and was competing at county level aged 13, said: “It will be wonderful to know her legacy is living on in the help we hope to give other patients.” The fashion-conscious golfer now has his own coaching studio, a junior golf academy at Parley Golf Centre and

with his brother, Lewy, has launched Shaw Golf, a clothing brand featuring brightly-coloured golf hoodies and polo shirts; 50 per cent of the sales profits will also go to the charity. On his passion for golf, Harry said: “I fell in love with the sport as a child and count myself extremely lucky to have been able to compete and now teach new generations. “I don’t really fit the traditional image of the golfer. My tattoos and loud clothing have seen me banned from clubhouses in the past. But I’m happy that golf is becoming more inclusive... a sport for everyone, and my clothing reflects that. “My hoodies are bold with different-coloured cancer-ribbon logos and the irreverent slogan FU Cancer. “I’ve had quite a few pre-orders and am hoping more people

will buy one – whether they play golf or not - knowing they are helping Macmillan Caring Locally. “Fingers crossed I will have a great season and win some good money for the charity. “One of my sponsors, Copper Monkey Consulting, are matching my donations for the season, which is amazing. “I have some great sponsors this year - Echo Pure Print Management, Vee Fitness, Gordon Barker Sales, Lettings and Commercial and Secure Life Solutions – who’ve funded my entry fees to the competitions, meaning I can donate even more to the hospice.” Lin Sharp, fundraising and communications director of Macmillan Caring Locally, said: “What Harry is doing for us this year is incredible and we cannot thank him enough. His support will make a real difference to the people and families we support and will be a truly fitting tribute to his Nan Helen.” To support Harry visit: justgiving.com/ fundraising/thetattooed golfcoach.

Victorious schoolgirls up for the cup

The Year 6 Girls football team from Allenbourn Middle School in Wimborne has won the regional Premier League Primary Stars tournament securing a place in the national finals at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road Stadium in May. Premier League Primary Stars is an annual initiative involving hundreds of school teams from across the country. Allenbourn won a place at the regional tournament after winning the local heat for schools in Bournemouth and Poole. They travelled to Stoneham FC in Hampshire on March 18, representing their local professional team AFC Bournemouth. Team coach, Chris Hickson (pictured with the team), said: “They had a nervous start, narrowly losing to the school team representing Brighton 1-0. But this didn’t dampen their spirits and they won their final two group games, scoring seven goals and conceding none.” He continued: “In the quarter finals they came up against the school team representing Portsmouth and played incredibly well, winning 2-0. “The semi-finals

followed, and they had a very close game against the team representing Woking, eventually winning with an amazing extra-time goal. “The thrilling final saw them play the team representing Southampton. This was a really closely-fought game. But the girls managed to end it as 1-0 winners and were crowned champions of the tournament. They - and I are over the moon.”

Guests were on the ball with Wimborne law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors and rugby legends at Dorset Sporting Club’s Spring lunch. Former Wales international Adam Jones and gold medal winning Paralympian Aaron Phipps were speakers at the event sponsored by Ellis Jones – with an office in East Street – and supported by Julius Baer International Limited. They shared gripping stories and anecdotes about life

on and off the pitch during the event at Rick Stein’s Sandbanks restaurant. Nigel Smith, managing partner of Ellis Jones, said: “Adam and Aaron were wonderful company with humorous tales and reflections about the game. “We touched upon the latest Six Nations championship and they gave inspirational insights into their own journeys in rugby and life in general.”

The girls now move on to the national finals in May, competing against regional winners from across the country on the pitch of Premier League team Watford FC. Cindy Pritchard, headteacher of Allenbourn, said: “The team have done amazingly well and Mr Hickson, myself and the entire school are incredibly proud of their achievements. We can’t wait

until May to see them in action at the national finals.” Allenbourn Middle School is part of Wimborne Academy Trust. CEO Liz West said: “What an absolutely thrilling tournament. I’m so proud of how the girls kept their cool and played with such skill and determination. They deserve this fabulous victory and the chance to go on to the finals.”

It may be a small business tucked away on a Dorset industrial estate but its products – and innovative engine technology – are known and used across the globe. RCV Engines Limited, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in March, began life producing rotary valve internal combustion engines for model aircraft. Co-founded by Eric Hill and Keith Lawes, the Ferndownbased company has long since moved into new business areas, specifically the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or drone market. Its four-stroke engines are now a key component of some of the world’s most advanced Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) for both commercial and military requirements. The core technology is based around the novel rotary valve which has extensive patent cover in key global markets until 2038. The key benefit is that, unlike other engine technologies, it operates equally well on petrol

Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users or kerosene-based heavy fuels, an essential requirement for military or marine applications. Compared to a two-stroke engine, an RCV equipped drone can fly twice as long for the same fuel load. Civilian uses for RCV’s engines include coastguard search and rescue, environmental research and pipeline surveillance in remote areas. Its engines can operate in everything from high altitude to salt water conditions

and dry arid deserts to lab conditions. Only the fuel map requires modification as RCV’s combustion systems have proved to be adaptable and tolerant of environmental change. They can even switch between fuel types with no power loss. Such has been RCV’s cutting edge technology and reputation that it received around $2.7m over several years from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to research and design engines for drones. Today its engines can be found in long-range drones such as the Sentinel Longreach 70. The small, unmanned helicopter is designed for long-range operation in a variety of conditions, including hostile climates and terrains as well as maritime environments. Using RCV’s 70cc twin cylinder liquid cooled unit it has an airspeed of 70 knots, maximum endurance of eight hours, can carry up to 10 litres of fuel and generates onboard power, allowing a wide range

of sensors and equipment to be used. Other applications for RCV’s engines include forest and garden equipment including handheld garden tools such as leaf blowers as well as portable generators and small two-heel vehicles. Eric, RCV’s chief executive, said the UAV market was expected to see substantial growth over the coming years. RCV has already successfully exported its engines to more than 50 countries as well as providing development and production engines to international customers. Eric, 78, said: “We employ nine technicians and engineers and are comparatively small but our engines are known, and used, around the world. “We’re in a very good position to make the most of these and other opportunities with plans to increase our capacity, expand our engine range and create a larger testing facility.” In one of the latest developments, an RCV engine was used in the first successful drone flight for the RAF using an alternative to fossil fuel.

ARE YOU PREPARED TO PAY FOR LATER LIFE CARE? Local financial expert, Peter Harding, explains why it’s important to plan ahead and make proper provision to pay for Long Term Care. Almost half of the UK’s elderly care home residents (49.6%) had to pay for their own care between 2019 and 2020: according to a report issued by the Office for National Statistics on 15th October 2021.

How much could you pay? The reality is that most of us will have to foot the bill for our care when the time comes, should we need it. What’s more, those costs are frequently much higher than many people expect. For example, the average annual cost of a standard residential care home in the UK is £34,000, while for more specialised nursing care, it’s around £48,000 on average. Source: Payingforcare.org, 2020 (Based on Laing & Buisson 2020 report)

The cap on care costs. It’s important to make sure that people do not fall foul of any misconceptions when it comes to paying for social care. Also, when the cap on care costs comes in, as announced by the government last year, this is more complex than it seems, and while it will help towards limiting some of the costs it won’t alleviate all of them. It’s therefore likely that many of us will have to face up to making financial provision for our own care, particularly as we’re living longer as a society, thus increasing our chances of needing support in older age.

Don’t leave it too late. Whatever your situation, the most important thing to do is to speak to a financial adviser, particularly as the rules about who pays for what are so complex, not to mention regional variations and what’s likely to happen in the future as the government implements its new policy.

ETS TRUCK&VAN DORSET’S PREMIER COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SERVICE ETS Truck and Van are looking for GOODS VEHICLE TECHNICIANS and APPRENTICES for their Blandford and Poole locations. Continued from last issue 5. Electric car charging rules and how to leave your vehicle safely The Highway Code is encouraging motorists to use a new technique when leaving a vehicle. When you’re parked and about to leave the vehicle, you should open the door using the hand opposite to the door you’re opening. For example, if you were opening the door on your right, you’d use your left hand to open it. This technique is sometimes called the ‘Dutch reach’. The technique makes drivers turn their head to look over their shoulder and behind them. This means they’re more likely to see a cyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian before they open the door.

The code has also brought in new rules for electric cars. Drivers should park closely to the charging point, making sure that the charging cables don’t create a trip hazard. While your EV is charging you should display a warning sign if you can. Once you’ve finished charging, return the cables and connectors so it’s not an obstacle for other road users.

6. Drivers to be aware of cyclists and their position in the road Although these rules apply to cyclists, it’s good for drivers to be aware of these rules. Cyclists should position themselves in the centre of the lane: on quiet roads in slow moving traffic

at the approach to a junction or if the road narrows On busy roads with fast moving traffic, cyclists should keep 0.5 metres (just over 1.5 feet) away from the kerb. Cyclists riding in groups If you’re cycling in groups, you should ride two abreast. The Highway Code mentions that this technique could be safer, particularly if you’re cycling with young people or inexperienced cyclists. If you’re cycling two abreast and you notice someone driving behind you, try to move into single file or stop and allow them to overtake when it’s safe. If you’re cycling in a group, you need to be aware of road users that are more vulnerable than you. For example, pedestrians. Cycling past parked vehicles

If you’re cycling past a parked vehicle, leave at least a door’s width (around one metre) between yourself and the car. Make sure you look out for pedestrians walking between parked cars and into your path too.Slow down when necessary and let people walking know you’re there. Cyclists can do this by ringing their bell. Approach walkers with care. Remember that they could be

deaf, blind or partially sighted. Not pass horses on the horse’s left side. Pedestrians should also make sure not to obstruct the path of riders and cyclists. 7. Cyclists at junctions If you’re cycling into or out of a side road, you should give way to people who are crossing or waiting to cross. There are also new traffic light systems for cyclists at junctions that mean cyclists

Here’s the latest news on doggy-doos

by Lorraine Gibson As spring blossom, not everything comes up smelling of roses. To address the burgeoning issue of discarded dog waste in local natural beauty spots, BCP council rangers have been spraying biodegradable red chalk on discarded dog waste in beauty spots. They believe that flagging-up problem poos to other dog walkers will encourage people to be more conscientious. Responsible dog owners in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are also reminded of the rules brought into effect at the start of March to help protect the area’s natural environment. From now until July 31 is ‘dogs on lead season’ so they must take steps to limit

disturbance to protected wildlife in heathland and in nature reserves. Rules state that anyone using open access rights must keep dogs on short leads during this time and all through the year when around livestock. Areas included are Canford Heath, Hengistbury Head, Turbary Common, Corfe Hills Heathland, Ham Common, Talbot Heath and

Bourne Valley. Councillor Mark Anderson at BCP Council said of the campaign: “This is an incredibly special time of the year for our heathlands and open spaces. Species from as far away as Africa migrate to our heaths to breed and nests are under construction. He added: “Rare reptiles also emerge, to bask in the sun and hunt, with invertebrate

life utilising the bounty of unique flora as it begins to bloom. “By keeping your dog on its lead, you can help protect our precious wildlife at this critical time. “We also know that dog waste can have a really negative impact on the environment. “As well as being unpleasant to see, it is dangerous to other animals and children due to harmful bacteria and parasites. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dogs and against the law to not do so.’’ Alternative sites, parks and green spaces are available across the area where dogs can be off lead at all times. Find out more about heathlands at: bcpcouncil. gov.uk/heathlands.

Increase value with good garden design From grand design to garden make overs, making the most of your outside space enhances your lifestyle and increases property value and appeal. Let’s start by creating an outline plan of your existing site. Measure the width of your house, noting the windows, doors, bays and sideways. Measure the length of each boundary line and the width of the rear boundary. Use these measurements to draw an aeriel view of the back of your house and garden on A3 graph paper using a scale of 1cm to 50cm. Add the features that are staying, such as large trees, summer house or pond, and draw these to scale. Consider the elements and proportions you want in the new garden such as terrace (roughly 30%)

and lawn (roughly 50%), planting and vegetable areas, playhouses, trampolines, seating, pergolas, lighting and power. We will now look at overlaying your new elements, shapes and ideas onto your outline plan. You will need some A3 tracing paper to place on top of your outline plan so that you can play with placement of the main features of your new design. I would start with the terraced area, ensuring that it is big enough for your garden furniture/ barbecue, and thinking carefully about your access routes. Now consider the shape and size of the larger elements you require and where you could place them in your garden. Are these a feature or should they be hidden? Do they need sun or shade? Avoid the common mistake of

placing all your elements without considering the final shape of your lawn or central area. These ideas at present only deal with two dimensions, so add interest with height. This can be achieved by introducing pergolas, sculptures, statues, large trees or specimen shrubs. Also consider the flow of the garden, considering pathways and views from the house. Create at least four of these working drawings, playing with shapes, scale and placement of the main elements. Next time… we’ll develop these working ideas into two strong design concepts for both visual impact and budget consideration. Contact Greg Whale (bluetulips. co.uk) for coaching sessions or garden design services on 01258 881112/07900 431701.

A strong trade for the Hensbridge herd PB Weeks & Son of the Hensbridge Herd Herd Dispersal Report: The dispersal of the ‘Hensbridge’ herd of Pedigree Holstein Friesian cows on behalf of local client PB Weeks & Son of Laverton, Bath, had been greatly anticipated by not only local farmers, but from dairy buyers from further afield. The sale was conducted by Symonds & Sampson and joint auctioneers Cooper & Tanner at Frome Livestock Market on Wednesday. A strong trade was anticipated for this high -yielding, closed herd bred for strength and depth. Autumn calving and loose housing didn’t put buyers off, as the younger 1st – 3rd lactating cows regularly made £1,600-£1,800. Top spot went to ‘Hensbridge Useful Honeybee 2’ who calved in July 2021 and

is in calf to ‘Aristocrat’ in August, selling at £2,120. She was closely followed by ‘Hensbridge Upright Jackie’ also being in her 1st lactation and due in August selling at £2,100. The milking herd as a whole sold for an excellent overall average of more than £1,450 per head. A terrific consignment

of in calf heifers due in August sold for an average of £1,421, with the top two sired by Martini & Ardor each selling for £1,575. Greg Ridout, partner & auctioneer with Symonds & Sampson extends his thanks to the Weeks family for their kind instructions to act on their behalf, and to all the team at Manor Farm for

their tireless preparation in the lead-up to Wednesday’s successful sale. Symonds & Sampson’s Agricultural Sales department hold regular online and on-site sales of machinery, livestock, fodder, vehicles and a wide variety of stock dispersal. Contact Greg on 01935 382909 for further details.
