Cravat’s the way to do it! A biker in tweeds and a cravat would be a rare sight, so imagine more than 600 of them riding through Dorset. This Sunday at 1pm, distinguished sorts will polish their motorcycles and set off from the Southbourne Brewhouse & Kitchen to ride through Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to raise funds for men’s mental health and prostate cancer. Staged by The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, it will highlight alarming statistics that show men’s suicide rates in the area are 30 per cent higher than the rest
of England, with males accounting for three in four of all suicides.
Added to that, there are around 14,000 undiagnosed prostate cancer cases in England. The ride aims to promote more ‘chap chat’ and encourage men to get health niggles checked out. The ride’s part of a global event, with rides occurring simultaneously worldwide. Ian McLennan, Bournemouth & Poole DGR Leader, says: “The funds raised all go to the Movember Foundation.” www.gentlemansride.com uk.movember.com www.samaratins.org.
Trust makes awards of £34,000 to six schools The trustees of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) were delighted to make awards of £34,000 to six local schools in celebration of the Jubilee. Awards were made to the headteachers with volunteers, students and trustees present.
The funding was made available to schools in the Ferndown area for special enrichment projects aimed at supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the children. Recipients incuded Ferndown Upper School, Ferndown Middle School, Beaucroft
Foundation School, Ferndown First School and Parley and Hampreston First Schools. The JTYAF was set up in 2008 in memory of John Thornton who was killed in Afghanistan. In the last 14 years, almost £850,000 has been awarded to more than 2,200 young folk.
Village days
Jill Mumford taught at Hampreston CE VA First School for 23 years until her retirement in 2005 and has some lovely stories to tell. Jill’s giving copies to former pupils and families on Saturday, May 28, 11am2pm in the school hall. There’s no charge, but donations are requested to help the Emily Collins School, Uganda. Jill says: “Do come, friends and former classmates, the more the merrier!”

‘Community’ says it for garden
On Friday, May 6, the next new site for Beaucroft School in Wimborne had an empty school field outside it… but by the Sunday it had the clear signs of a Community Garden developing on it! Over the weekend many hard-working, volunteers of all ages transformed the field into a garden with 12 dug beds for flowers veggies, a large soft fruit area and a huge no-dig section - and 10 cubic meters of compost was wheelbarrowed and put on
top of all the beds! The turf that was taken down to the children’s area in the planned garden and transformed into magical grassy structures under the trees – including a snake, turtle and a fun donut ring! There were also volunteers potting up plants ready to go in the beds while others widened the pathway for wheelchair access. Generosity was shown by companies like Dorset Soils, MB Wilks, Home Instead,

Conflict is creating a new breed of hero As a boy I was enthralled by the antics of the Cockleshell heroes. For the benefit of those who know little about history, they were a group of Royal Marines who canoed 70 miles up the river Gironde during the hours of darkness, to attack enemy ships moored at the port of Bordeaux, in occupied France with limpet mines. Today I’m a little longer in the tooth, but continue to be enthralled by the heroic acts of the brave. In all conflicts the myth and facts often get mixed up. One such myth was the ghost of Kyiv. It embodies the gallant spirit of the highly-qualified pilots of the tactical aviation brigade who successfully defended the region of Kyiv. It certainly gave the Russian pilots the heebie-jeebies.
Between February 24 and March 13 the Ukrainian Air Force downed 40 planes with major Stephen Tarabalka, flying a Mig-29, shooting down six Russian aircraft. In due course, I am certain that books and probably a film will be made about him. And with so much heroism being shown by the Ukrainians, there will be many more based on the true-life stories such as the Ukrainian marines holed-up in the steel plant in Mariupol. These guys have held out for months against the entire Russian might. The marines remaining have no choice but to fight on - by doing so they tie up many thousands of Russians who would otherwise fight against their comrades in the Donbas region. Mike Fry Upton

Retreat is Great Ormond fundraiser An online learning retreat for grief and trauma, which takes place from May 20-22, but is accessible for a further week will raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital through a charity set up by local yoga teacher and grief coach, Leah Morgan, of Still We Rise Coaching. The retreat brings together more than 20 professional speakers with specialisms in grief and trauma, aiming to empower the audience to access helpful advice and practical and emotional tools. Leah has organised the event in memory of her daughter Maggie-Mae, who lost her battle with leukaemia in 2018, aged just 18 months. It is estimated just one in five million babies are born with the disease. “My life was turned upside down when Maggie-Mae was born with leukaemia,” recalls Leah. “Despite being incredibly poorly, she managed to hold on and responded well to the incredible treatment at GOSH. “Maggie appeared to have beaten the disease until two days after her first birthday, when it returned and she quickly became critically unwell.”
GOSH was able to to offer more treatment and help Maggie-Mae get well enough for what should have been a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, the leukaemia Maggie had was extremely aggressive and returned days after transplant - something even the hospital’s haematology team were not expecting. Just five days later, on her mother’s birthday, little Maggie-Mae died. “Being Maggie-Mae’s mummy is a role
that fills me with the deepest pride. In her 18 short months Maggie taught us the meaning of living and loving fully. It’s now my mission to ensure that message continues. “In her name I am dedicated to supporting anyone experiencing grief and trauma, and especially those who have had their lives changed unrecognisably by childhood cancer.” The talks featured in the retreat can be viewed online in return for a donation, and all money raised from the event will be directed to Maggie-Mae’s Brighter Future Fund, to go towards GOSH’s childhood cancer research strategy. Replays will be available to everyone who registers for up to a week. Leah says: “Some of the themes covered in the retreat include resilience, posttraumatic growth and recovery, understanding anxiety, navigating grief, parenting, anxious teens, positive mindset and much more.

Generations of craft, skill and knowledge, woven with love Steeped in three generations of history, Bakhtiyar has long been a respected leader in the Persian and Oriental hand-knotted carpet trade. Headed by internationally renowned carpet expert Masoud Mazaheri-Asadi, he and his son Koroush continue to carve a new path for the industry bringing the historic beauty of Persia to homes around the world. Spend time with Bakhtiyar’s specialists and you will quickly discover their passion and love for the craftsmanship of the carpets they source. As an authoritative figure within the industry, Masoud is often invited to share his expertise and insider knowledge with media outlets such as the BBC to discuss the ever-changing market. He also advises auction houses, insurance firms and institutions to identify and value Persian rugs and carpets. But we would be remise to say that is
all we do, we carry out general carpet repairs for clients, whilst also working with many historic organisations to clean and restore carpets, bringing them back to life, in some cases removing 200 year old stains. At Bakhtiyar we believe that no carpet is ever a lost ruin, beyond repair. As the Persian Poet Rumi once said “where
there is ruin, there is hope for treasure”. Our team of highly skilled cleaners and restorers, based in our London Warehouse, carry out repairs using the traditional knotting methods to fully restore rugs to their former glory, taking wool dated from the same period as the rug, to perfectly match the rest of the piece.

Badgers Class at Witchampton C of E First School had a wonderful educational visit to Launceston Farm to enhance our learning in Science and Design Technology, writes Beth Middlebrook. We began by looking for signs of spring, noticing that the calves had been born and many plants were beginning to bloom. We collected different petals and leaves to create our own spring bracelets. We had fun tracking the journey of a wheat seed, seeing it grow in the field before making bread. Launceston Farm is an organic farm and so no pesticides are used. This meant that there was a wide variety of plants and insects to observe amongst the wheat. We also made our own butter by shaking

Political round-up
Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher
Government failures dominate complaints The Government clearly wants MPs to be kept very busy legislating over the coming months. This is apparent from the Queen’s Speech delivered on May 10. My emails and postbag, however, continue to be dominated by abject administrative failures in various branches of Government. No extra legislation is needed to tackle these problems but merely the restoration of high standards of public service. Despite having 100,000 more civil servants than in 2015, efficiency and effectiveness have deteriorated. The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, was right to criticise the Head of the Passport Office for still working from home at a time when her organisation is manifestly failing the public. While the Passport Office’s failure to anticipate or respond to the rise in demand for renewals is inexcusable, it is no consolation to
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP individuals if they are left worrying or complaining about the consequences. I, therefore, strongly advise everyone to submit passport renewal applications as early as possible, preferably several months in advance. They should also remember that some countries now require at least one year’s continuing validity on a passport as a condition of entry. MPs can make representations where
there is a genuine emergency but we cannot guarantee help for those who leave routine applications too late. That is why I am also supporting demands for improvements in real-time passport processing information and easy access to fast track services. n The practical difficulties of identifying and enforcing new controls and restrictions proposed in the Online Harms Bill must be addressed. A local community website recently fell victim to the Facebook censor for a posting which incorporated a wellestablished figure of speech. The description of a bargain price was ‘I would rip his arm off for that’. It was held to be against Facebook’s policy against violence and incitement. The richness of the English language must be protected. n It is disappointing when local councils feature in the ‘Rotten Boroughs’ section of
‘Private Eye’. Let us hope, therefore, that BCP Council will be transparent in responding to and allaying concerns about its councilowned regeneration company, Future Places. The council is giving the company two substantial loans to finance its work. But why is the company, according to Freedom of Information responses, already paying its managing director, chief operating officer and corporate engagement director salaries totalling £395,000 a year? There is no guarantee against the company being loss making and, therefore, unable to repay what it has borrowed. While the Government is quite correctly, in my view, intent upon reducing its rate of borrowing, the same isn’t happening locally where massive debt financing will become an increasing burden on local taxpayers for years to come.
UK government is only one increasing taxes
Politics is about choices. As the Spring Statement fades and summer approaches, the Chancellor still chooses not to help people across the country with the cost of living crisis. Let’s be very clear – he could help a lot more than he did. Inflation is pushing more and more of us into higher tax brackets. The Office of Budget Responsibility calculated that these surging tax receipts give Sunak at least £15bn more a year annually to play with, after debt servicing costs. Whilst a reduction in fuel duty is welcome to many in rural Dorset dependent on our cars, it does nothing to help, for example, the millions without cars reliant on universal credit or the state pension.
He callously left both with a real terms cut of three per cent. Politics with this government is also increasingly about deception and distraction. The small change in the earnings point at which we pay National Insurance (NI) from £10,000 to £12,000 is dwarfed by the £12bn a year ‘health and social care’ NI increase he announced just six months earlier. Sunak taketh away with one hand, and then giveth a smaller amount back with the other. For graduates though he takes with both, through increasing their student loan repayments as well. After 12 years of Conservative rule, taxes are now at their highest and disposable income dropping at its fastest since the Second
Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS World War. Every country in the world is struggling with inflation, but the UK is unique in the G7 group of large economies to choose to increase taxes coming out of the Pandemic. Plus, it’s the country in the G7 with the worst growth rate. The Tories are the party of
high tax because they are the party of low growth. They have no answer to the UK’s declining productivity, or the fact that international trade has collapsed by 12%. As families across Dorset continue to struggle, all we have is a hint here and an impromptu remark there that help is to come in the autumn. That’s no solace to everyone being hit by increases in the cost of food and energy right now. The Tories plan to hoodwink you into voting for them again with a tax cut before the next election. That’s the most cynical choice of all. When you choose how to vote when that election comes, just remember how this government chose to leave us all struggling.

Showcase raises £600 for hospice
Bears a necessity for Ghurkas The Gurkha Welfare Trust’s supporters have been hard at work dressing adorable teddy bears in a Gurkha or Nepali theme ready for their first Teddy Bear Auction. Community fundraising officer Helen Read said: “It has been very difficult these last couple of years to raise money for our work in Nepal. “Thankfully our supporters are amazing and understand that the money they raise is essential to support Gurkha veterans and their families. As a result, I was delighted when so many chose to support
us through our Teddy Bear Auction!” There are a variety of bears on offer, each meticulously decorated, from female bears in beautiful saris to bears in traditional Nepali dress with matching Topi hat. There is a Gurkha recruit bear carrying a Doko basket and others bearing the famous crossed kukris symbol. Seventeen bears are up for auction and they can be bid on until this Sunday, May 22 at jumblebee.co.uk/ GWTteddybearauction.
The Merley Business & Organisation Showcase, organised by Merley resident and business owner, Debi Donovan, was a great success providing Merley-based businesses and organisations the opportunity to promote their services and businesses to the local community and beyond. Forest Holme Hospice were delighted to receive a donation of £600 to support their work, helping to enhance the lives of patients and their families across Poole, Wimborne and Purbeck. Debi said: “We would like to say a huge thank-you for choosing to fundraise for Forest Holme Hospice, please pass on our thanks to everyone who contributed to this wonderful donation.”

The ship’s master was mortally wounded and pinned down by debris and issued the order to abandon ship which was on fire. Apprentice Clark, aged 18, stood by the dying master rendering what help he could. As one of the last to abandon ship he took charge of a lifeboat which had been damaged. Online auction is child’s play by Lorraine Gibson ‘Bravo!’ to Susan Finklaire and the stalwarts of the Oakford Fitzpaine Village Community Group for raising a whopping £535 to help children in their village via a virtual charity auction. Susan first set up the online auction during Lockdown for a bit of fun. “No one was getting any retail therapy and one of the popular jobs people were giving themselves was to have a clear out, so getting things to auction was easy,” she says. The rest, as they say, is history. “Since last February,” adds Susan, “we have raised more than £3,000 for local projects in the parish. “This latest one will go towards much-needed improvements to the play
area in Bovey Park.” The successful sale saw enthusiastic bidding on around 40 very diverse lots, including balls of wool, a popcorn-maker, piles of books, dog accessories and even an alien-shaped lemon squeezer. “We’ve had all sorts donated, from louvre doors to a breakfast in a community café,” she says. “More items for the next auction are welcome. It’s very rewarding to see how well a community cones together for a shared aim. “The next auction will be August, or before if I get enough donations, and will be to raise more funds for the playpark as it’s estimated we will need a few thousand . . .” To donate items, call Sue on 01258 861357 or email

Exercise for your mental health We all have mental health, like we all have physical health. The two are closely linked and the mind/body connection is a very real thing. When we exercise our bodies release happy hormones and so this can help us feel better about ourselves. As this month includes Mental Health Awareness Week, I thought I would share what I try and do as an exercise professional in supporting people. Although exercise is a great tool in our kit for safeguarding and building a protective layer around our mental health and helping on the path to recovery, it is not therapy or medication. Although I am a big advocate of the benefits of exercise, I know it isn’t the whole answer. Our overall health is like a carefully-
stacked Jenga tower, of which exercise is just one piece. Like many of us, I sometimes struggle to know how to support people and worry about saying the wrong thing. When I feel like this, I try to remember that my role is to listen and sometimes just signpost to people who might be able to help. Loneliness is a massive problem in our community and exercise and fitness groups go a long way to helping address this by giving us a space to connect with others. It’s often easier to do this when you’re side by side doing something. Feeling lonely can become a downward spiral as it can impact our desire and confidence to socialise, which leads to more loneliness.
Although a gym or an exercise class is my personal playground, I always remember it can feel an intimidating environment for many people turning up for the first time. As a fitness professional, I take my responsibility to welcome people, encourage them and have fun, very seriously. Exercise should be enjoyed by and can benefit everyone, regardless of our age, size, ability or current health. Fitness is for everyone who has a body, not just the young, the beautiful and the healthy. We all have the right to be somewhere exercising and experience what our bodies can do and work on improving them. People often turn up on my doorstep feeling quite vulnerable and wanting help. My role is to encourage and support them in their goals, give them

One in four of us have been affected by a mental health problem and so although it’s very common, how we are isn’t who we are; there is so much more to us.

Exploring Stour & Avon... STURMINSTER MARSHALL This is a gentle stroll of a little over four miles so allow a couple of hours or so. Some parts can be muddy after rain so wear appropriate footwear. Park your car just over the parish boundary at the National Trust car park near White Mill, which is sometimes open to visitors. Cross the ancient bridge over the Stour. It has a ‘Transportation Plate’ that offers you a free trip to the land of Oz if you damage the bridge. Walk for about half a mile along the road to the village, passing an old pill box close to the bridge. When it reaches the village, the road swings right, then left, passing the church, which is worth a visit. There are lots of yew trees in the churchyard. 27 feet in circumference. Continue south westwards through the village, passing the green, then turn right, north west, along a bridleway that soon joins the old Somerset & Dorset railway line for a while. The bridleway then turns left, south west, crosses the A350 and continues for over half a mile to a crossways. Turn left and go downhill enjoying the view ahead of Charborough Park with its phallic symbol among the trees.
When you reach the road turn left and head eastwards for a mile back towards the village, passing through the hamlet of Newton Peverill which has an airfield on the right. Cross the A350 and continue through the village. You’ll pass a green with a very tall dancing pole with a ‘ratty’ weather vane at the top. After a few bends you’ll be back on the road that takes you back to your car.

Get your body set for summer The weather is warming up and it seems like summer is finally on its way! It’s felt like such a long winter and I’m sure many people cannot wait to get out and enjoy it. But there are always some of us who don’t enjoy the summer quite so much, whether due to the heat, feeling bodyconscious or just wanting to avoid the tourist crowds. Summer can feel like a pressured time - how to look, how to dress, what to eat and drink. My ethos has always been you do what makes YOU happy. If that’s making absolutely no changes and rocking your winter bod through summer, then go for it. If being out in the sun fills you with dread, think up some new activities or hobbies you can do indoors. To prepare for summer, there’s a number of treatments and
home tips that you can try out. Pedicures are a great way to get your feet prepped and looking good in sandals, especially if they’ve been tucked away in slippers all winter. If you’re concerned with toenails that are thick, brittle or discoloured it may be best to have these checked with your GP or a podiatrist. If you suffer with acne or spots on your back year-round or just in the warmer weather, then back treatment to help clear the skin is a good option. Maybe you want to focus on

Be sure to re-apply after being in water. Better still, abide by the four health rules of summer - cover up, wear a hat, stay in the shade and keep out of the sun at the hottest times.

Tune in to yourself and just be I recently found myself with an opportunity. No work. No time pressure. Away from home. Just me. I decided to take myself to a café and just be. Maybe many of you do this all the time and it’s fine, but this is pretty much a first for me and I was anxious when I arrived. Nervously shifting from foot to foot waiting for someone to notice me, not wishing to be left loitering too long receiving pitying looks from other customers. Eventually I am seen and for some reason I find myself apologetically asking for a table for one. It’s as if I feel like I am somehow ruining the equilibrium of things by not have a companion in tow. As I’m led to a table, I’m advised that it will be needed back in an hour. God forbid that I outstay my welcome hogging a table that could be used for two paying individuals. I position myself
with my back to the wall, facing out in order to keep an eye on things (is this a fight or flight thing I wonder, or am I just nosey?), I’m grateful to be flanked on my left side by another wall. Once I’ve selected my desired pick-me-up, I dive into my bag and pull-out my trusty mobile. Ahh, now I feel more comfortable. I must look lovely and occupied, mindlessly scrolling through my phone. But hang on, this isn’t what I came to do. When did I last retreat into myself and take great pleasure in my own company? When was I last able to just be and not feel the need to do something? Whether waiting in a queue or killing time, I often fill those moments with other things – scrolling social media, a quick review of the news, completing a chore. As alien as it feels, I put my phone away and decide to embrace the solitude, drop
the feelings of embarrassment, and give myself space. There is a cacophony of noise around me yet, if I listen intently, I can tune into various conversations dancing in the air. The two ladies next to me catching up on their week’s trials and tribulations, the price of a dressing gown, the comedy argument over who paid for coffee and cake last time. The family of six enjoying a hearty breakfast, the younger members of which, engrossed in their phones, scrolling through image after image. How I wish they could realise that the precious time they have with their family is more important than the trappings of social media. (Ark at me!) There’s someone taking a photo of their coffee. I must admit the barista does a great job at leaving beautiful patterns in the froth, but I don’t think it warrants being

Health & Wellbeing By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com Do you experience uncomfortable feelings such as anxiety or worry? Of course you do! We all do from time to time. But what if I could teach you a powerful method that will quickly and easily depotentiate that anxiety or worry? You may have heard of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) before. It’s sometimes known simply as ‘tapping’ and works on the same points of the body used in acupuncture - but don’t worry, no needles are required! Once you start putting this simple six-step technique into practice, the benefits become obvious very quickly. It puts control of your emotions back into your
How to tap away your anxiety
own hands - quite literally! In EFT you tap with your fingertips on the following points in turn: Top of head (centre) Middle of forehead Temple (corner of the eye) Cheekbone, under the eye Under edge of either side of your collarbone Wrist Here’s how you do it: Name the feeling - eg
“worrying thoughts” or “anxious feeling” and then give it a rating on a scale of 0-10 where zero is nothing at all and 10 is very bad. This will allow you to assess how the feeling reduces in intensity. Begin tapping on the top of your head and say (either to yourself or out loud) the name you have given it - eg “anxious feeling.” Move through the points in turn, saying “anxious feeling” each time. Tap around 10 times on each point (you can use either hand and either side of your body). When you get to the point on the wrist, instead of tapping simply grab around your wrist with the thumb and fingers of your other hand and give it a squeeze. Release, breathe in and exhale deeply.
Now tune into the feeling again and notice how it has changed. How does it rate on that scale of 0-10 now? You will notice it has changed. Keep going with more rounds of tapping until that feeling reduces to zero and has completely gone. This technique is really effective for all sorts of unwanted feelings - anger, pain or discomfort, fear, panic - pretty much anything you want to feel differently about. Just name the feeling, rate it, and begin tapping through the points. Assess how it changes and repeat as many times as necessary to bring it down to a zero. Give it a go - you may just discover a new way to free yourself from unwanted feelings!

Try the Star Jump challenge for STARS Make a difference to people’s lives by taking part in the fun ‘star jumping’ challenge for Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS Dorset). Can you star jump for one minute, or could you manage five? STARS Dorset is asking anyone and everyone across Dorset to have a go and see how many star jumps they can do in a minute or, for the super fit, five minutes on Friday, May 27. All the charity asks is that each person who takes part donates £3. Recruit friends, family and colleagues to jump with you or to support you by donating. STARS Dorset provides support for children and adults who have experienced domestic abuse, sexual assault and childhood sexual trauma. The STARS Dorset vision is
to create a world free from abuse. Their work includes one to one therapy and support, group work and awareness raising. By Star Jumping for STARS you will be raising vital funds to help support people across Dorset. For further
information about the charity head to their website at starsdorset.org. To donate £3 you can either text STARSDORSET to 70085 (this costs £3 plus a standard rate message) or set up a Facebook Fundraiser Here you can share with friends and family so they
can take part too! You can also join the fun on the day by posting photos or videos to social media, make sure to tag #starjumpforSTARS For more information, or for resources to promote your event, email fundraising@ starsdorset.org.
Join up and say: ‘knickers to cancer’ by Lorraine Gibson Time to hoist up your knickers as the Great Dorset Pants Fence cancer charity project makes a comeback after two years in limbo. It’s been resurrected at Gorcombe Extreme Sports, Thornicombe, by the Ladies of Blandford Evening WI. Originally set up early in 2020, just two weeks before the first lockdown, most of the previous pants hung around before being lost to the trees during the 2021 winter storms. Alice’s black silk hipsters still cling to the big oak tree and Beryl’s thong has never been found (the names have been changed to protect the innocent!), however, the banner survived and was looked after by Lewis and the lads at Gorcombe Sports.
So the Blandford WI Ladies and a representative of Crossways WI re-erected the banner and hung up the first of the new season’s knickers. Tea was provided via the Gorcombe Goodlife Café’s owner Vicky and, naturally, the WI produced the cakes! Now all the fence needs are your fabbest frillies and brightest boxers, all of which
will go on display to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian and cervical and prostate and testicular cancers. While the underwear-themed sentiment may be a bit of a giggle, the message behind it is serious and two-fold, saying that hopefully cancer can be beaten and also to remember those for whom a
cure wasn’t found in time. So, grab you scanty smalls or baggy bloomers and go along to the Good Life Cafe at Gorcombe Extreme Sports Centre, make a donation to get your pegs then hang up those pants with pride. All contributions raised are for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.

Cooking...
Apple Strudel My husband Martin has an incredibly sweet tooth, after he has eaten his dinner, about an hour and a half later, he will ask what’s for dessert! I find that if I can offer a small dessert, then that will usually suffice. He loves apples and I have previously written about the apple crumble that he likes. This was a new dessert for him and me. I have seen strudels in the supermarket and thought, ‘how hard can it be!’. I had no recipe but used my family experience to create it. My gran used to have loads of apples given to her and whilst I can’t remember her making strudel, I know that she made apple pies and crumbles. I remembered how she cooked the apples and added sultanas etc, so I just adapted it for this recipe. I knew that you could plait the pastry, having done it at school. I find it amazing how you remember things from your childhood, and how you can naturally adapt them for recipes that you want to make. I wonder if families have any idea of the legacy that they leave in their children and grandchildren? My grandma will certainly never be forgotten in our
with Martha Legg
family, her cooking, sewing and knitting skills will be handed down through the generations to come. Ingredients 1 sheet puff pastry 3 cooking apples Handful of sultanas Pinch of cinnamon Milk to glaze Brown sugar Method Pre heat oven to 180C Peel and chop the apples
Place in a small pan, with a dash of water and a dash of sugar. (No idea what a ‘dash’ is, it’s a measurement my gran used to use!) Cook the apples until soft but still looking like cubes Remove from heat Stir in the sultanas and the cinniman Allow to cool Line a baking tray and put the pastry on it Lay the apple mix down the middle, leaving the same space on each side Brush all the edges with water Then, leaving a ¼ inch of pastry either side of the apple, cut the rest of the pastry in diagonal strips, each side of the apple. You need to have the same number each side. At the top and bottom, there will be a larger piece of pastry which will need to be folded over Then, using alternate strips, plait the pastry over the apple mix, using all the strips up Once finished, brush the strudel with milk and sprinkle with the brown sugar Cook until pastry in golden brown. Eat with custard, cream or ice cream, or all three!! Can be eaten hot or cold.

Home & Garden May’s garden maladies! How can I make the most from my compost heap, what can and can’t I put on there? The perfect compost heap can be quite an art, but don’t fear, follow a few basic steps and you will succeed with it even if it takes a little longer to produce the perfect decomposition if you don’t get the art quite right. I am assuming you have a standard ‘cool’ compost heap or bin here. There are three basic components to compost, green waste, brown waste and air/ water. You ideally need one part green waste (energy materials) to two parts brown waste (bulk materials), and a good air flow and moisture content (to help those fungi and bacteria to break down and convert the energy into usable energy again). Green waste is anything from lawn clippings, raw fruit and veg waste, and garden clipping. Brown compost ingredients are those with
higher carbon content such as paper, shredded woody material, and straw. Browns are dry and bulky, creating space for air to reach the greens. They do not decay rapidly without greens because they do not hold enough moisture. Fallen leaves are not true browns, despite the colour! Air and moisture is important, so covering the compost heap to keep the moisture in in the summer and excess water out in the winter is important, and you will rapidly speed up the composting process if you turn the mixture like a giant cake mix as often as you can – as much as every week is fine. It’s a good workout! If the pile gets hot, that’s a great sign. Do not put in cooked processed foods and animal byproducts, as these can breed harmful bacteria and encourage vermin, also I do not suggest you put in
unwanted plants that have gone to seed or that readily reproduce from roots, as you will find they come alive when you use the compost! There is such a thing as a hot bin (we have been blessed with a donation to the Ferndown Community Larder which I also run for my sins!), which composts at a much higher temperature and is able to process cooked foods and produce compost at a considerable rate. If you wish to see this in action, please
pop in to the Larder at the rear of Ferndown Day Centre weekdays between 2-5pm. Even what we have to throw away isn’t wasted! How often should you feed containers? It depends slightly what’s in it, but generally if it’s a shrub or perennial that you aren’t cropping from in terms of food or pick your own flowers, a good feed in the spring and again in the late summer with a slow release fertiliser will be perfectly fine and your plants will perform well. There are many options available to the general public these days. If it’s a fruit, veg or herb, then feed it according to what you are harvesting. If it’s the foliage you eat, such as herbs, choose a slow release general purpose higher nitrogen plant feed and feed late spring and mid/late summer, and possibly again if the plant is looking tired and not performing as well. If it’s the flowers or fruit of

Boss it with elderflower posset!
Home & Garden
JO GREEN is a former allotmenteer, forager, amateur herbalist, pickler and jam maker who squeezed her allotment greenery into her tiny garden
Every year around this time I consider planting an Elder in the garden. It flowers now and the intoxicating smell is heaven scent! I make elderflower cordial and stash some away to be used for the even more delicious Elderflower Posset. The sweet, lemony exotic smell is quite unlike any other British wild flower I have experienced. Try not to use many of the stalk and leaf parts in the cooking. The green parts are mildly toxic but once cooked the toxicity departs. So I always boil it a little (although some say it spoils the delicate flavour). First, of course, give the flowers a quick shower under the tap. I leave the florets to stew in a sweet concoction of honey and lemon over night. The next morning I put them to strain through a normal sieve and press down to squeeze the essence out and repeat throughout the day. You can leave it in the fridge for cordial or use it in the Posset recipe right away. To make three small possets put a 284 ml carton of double cream in a saucepan with 125 grams of granulated sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil and keep stirring for about 5 minutes. Add the sieved elderflower cordial which already has some lemon in it. Continue the boiling and stirring for a further 5 minutes then let cool before popping in the fridge for a few hours before serving.

Louise Jordan will present Florence – original song and storytelling in aid of Fordingbridge Museum, with a 7pm for 7.30pm start. Tickets cost £15 and include a light supper and an informal quiz and you can bring your own bottle. Tickets are available from Fordingbridge Bookshop, Fordingbridge Museum or ticketsource.co.uk.

Signs Of Spring in Broadstone
by Rex Bale As an appetiser the young musicians of the Camerata music club, who had just enjoyed a masterclass with the SALWA quartet, played two pieces by Mozart. The main programme started with Beethoven’s incredible last String Quartet No 16 in F major, Op 135. The longer third movement had a quiet gentle feeling of repose, and the introductory slow chords in the last movement are followed by the faster main theme of the movement. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement) is an uncharacteristic piece from him with a range of emotions from yearning to dramatic turmoil before the main melody which appears three times during the piece. After the interval we enjoyed the Romanze from Fanny Hensel’s
String Quartet No 6. She was Felix Mendelssohn’s sister and her compositions were suppressed at the time due to women not being accepted as composers. The final work was the String Quartet No. 6 in F minor composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1847 and was the last major piece he completed. The highlight is the beautiful adagio of the third movement which is a thoughtful and reflective reverie. A new partnership has been announced between our Poole Society for Young Musicians charity that runs Broadstone Music Series and the chamber music department of the Royal Academy of Music London. Finally, hearty thanks are due to the SALWA quartet and to Alison Kay and the many volunteer helpers who

Putting town on literary map by Faith Eckersall Following their successful Festival of Words in a Day earlier this spring, the organisers of Blandford Literary Festival have revealed new plans to put the town on the literary map. Not only are they planning a longer event next year, they are also planning a series of one-off writer and book events in the town during the remainder of 2022. Historical mystery author Paula Harmon, who is one of the organisers, said: “We would very much like to develop the festival into something which people talk about. We want to keep it fresh and interesting, while keeping its roots firmly in the aims we started with: to put Blandford on the literary map, to showcase less
well-known authors and to encourage creativity.” She and the volunteer team are currently drawing up a list of speakers and people who can lead interesting oneoff panels and discussions. “One of the things we did in the day festival in March was called Why Murder, which featured a group of authors who had written murders or mysteries,” says Paula. “There were three of us on it and it worked really well, so
we’re now looking to do something similar with writers of historical fiction, as it’s so popular.” The festival started in 2019 but was forced to ditch its 2020 event. Now they are looking for more published authors to get involved in the future events. Visit blandford literaryfestival.com or email the organisers at info@ blandfordliteraryfestival. com.

Around 100 people were at the Barrington Theatre for the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions’ first quiz at the venue since October 2019. Thanks are due to quizmaster Dan and all the other Lions who provided all the food, the raffle, distributed the scripts, did the scoring and provided the questions – a great team effort. From feedback, the questions this time were more varied, some tough, some easy. There were six rounds of 12 questions, with teams allowed to choose a joker round for double points. In the end, there was a ‘photo finish’ with The Scrambled Eggheads the winners, just pipping the Saga Louts with Los Tontos third. All proceeds from the event will go to support local food banks.

County river artist Gary
by Faith Eckersall Few lives in this part of Dorset have not been touched in some way by the River Stour. Whether you’ve fished or paddled in its waters, or live in one of the many places that take its name – from Stourpaine and Stour Provost, to Stourton and Sturminster Newton – it will have played a part in your life. Shaftesbury artist Gary Cook has been similarly enchanted, and charts the Stour’s stately progress, from a spring at Stourhead in Wiltshire, to a river meeting the sea. His exhibition, Wend: The Stour From Source To Sea at The Art Stable in Child Okeford, features 30 watercolours he has produced, celebrating the Stour’s 61-mile journey to the English Channel. “My paintings include silhouettes and names of the many species that I see and are dependent on the river and which are sadly threatened by pollution,” he says. As well as producing the atmospheric artworks, Gary,
who was the senior artist at The Sunday Times for more than 25 years, has also researched his beloved subject.
He says there are 48 tributaries that make up the 781 miles of rivers and streams feeding the Stour. “This has given me lots of

In 2020 the well-known West Moors Singers should have been celebrating their 50th anniversary. But they are now able to return and will be performing music from the last five decades at St Martin’s Church, Moorlands Road, West Moors, on Wednesday, May 25 at 7.30pm and Saturday, May 28 at 2.30pm. Missing the 50th anniversary was a huge disappointment said Dianne Tompkins, musical director and to make up for it the programme includes items from the popular Joseph And His Technicoloured Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, The Beatles, Sister Act, and Mamma Mia. Tickets are only £7 and can be obtained from ‘Buds and Beans’ Café next to the church, from 01202 870769 or at the door. Farming & Environment
A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.
There are few things more satisfying than seeing progress being made, and there has been much progress made at the farm this month. I was lucky enough to be on site when the new animal feed store was delivered – a 40foot former supermarket lorry refrigeration unit. When the low loader arrived to deliver it, we all scratched our heads as to how the unit was going to get from the transporter to its intended destination. However, the delivery team, clearly ‘old hands’ at the game, simply removed a few fence panels and craned the
unit into its new home. The ‘shed’ is another fine example of our ability to adapt and upcycle. One man’s redundant lorry-body is another’s super sexy ‘rat proof’ secure store – complete with prewired electrics and fully insulated to boot! Lucie, head of the animal husbandry team, is genuinely delighted at her new store, which boasts enough room to also create some much-needed office space, something that’s at a premium at High Mead. The farm office is tiny and has just enough room for three office chairs and there are at least six
members of staff that may like to use them at any one time. A visit to the office is akin to playing one of those little puzzles which requires you to move one piece before you can shift another. If you are lucky enough to secure a seat, you must be sure to look after it, because the moment you vacate it, there will be someone (or a ginger cat) leaping into your place. Almost as speedy, and even more prolific than a seat thief, are the weeds this time of year. Oh my days! Look away
from a freshly-dug patch of ground for more than a few minutes and I swear you will see new shoots emerging as soon as your gaze is returned. What a relentless task! Hannah, Rachel, David, and the horticultural team have been doing sterling work, but the fight is now on to keep the weeds at bay and the farm gardens looking tidy. If there are any seasoned gardeners out there that know their weeds from their Welsh Onions, and who find themselves with a few

hours to spare, then do please call the office and offer your services. The team, I am sure, would be most grateful. Work on a new fire alarm system starts this month too, courtesy of a very generous collection donated by Ferndown Golf Club. The upgrade, whilst not
terribly exciting and certainly less impactful than the animal feed store, is much needed and will not only help to keep the farm safe, but also inspection-ready! Just in time for us to enter the farm’s 10th anniversary month…

The South West’s farmers of the future, new generation gardeners and countryside careerists have a chance to gain financial support while they study through an innovative Student Support Fund. But they need to hurry as the closing date is end of this month. The brainchild of Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Society, organisers of the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show, this fund, only in its second year, is specifically set up to support students entering into agricultural, horticultural, countryside and land-based industries. It offers help with costs towards college or university course fees, books and equipment or even to help meet transport costs of getting to a place of study from a rural location. Matthew Price, who was part of the team that launched the initiative, said: “From my previous work in the NFU and roles as a
governor of a land-based school and college, I know it’s frequently the case that financial restraints create barriers to students accessing and fulfilling education and training. “The Student Support Fund sets out to ease those financial pressures by offering modest but worthwhile grants up to a maximum of £1,500.” Last year, the fund gave out £6,000 in grants ranging from money for hard-cap boots and safety helmets to helping fund course tuition fees. The easy-to-complete applications must be submitted by May 31 via gillinghamandshaftesbury show.co.uk/student-supportfund.

Juniors are the stars at Manningford
by Gortdon Wray Summer has well and truly arrived. especially over the border in Wiltshire where the Fly Fishers made the trip to Manningford Trout Fishery. Conditions were near perfect and the action was fast from the start. Trout were eager to fed on damsels and nymphs with the bigger fish nearer the bottom. Overall winner was junior member Bradley Slater who showed skill and patience targeting the bigger fish with an intermediate line. Bradley’s four fish bag tipped the scale at an impressive 15lbs 2ozs. Fellow junior Leo Hoyle landed the biggest brown trout of the day, at 6lbs 4ozs. A great day’s fishing in beautiful surroundings. n Hot But Not Cross at Moorhen Easter Comp
A perfect spring morning was enjoyed by the Poole ands Wimborne FlyFishers. Moorhen is a small but beautiful fishery in the Meon Valley in Hampshire and boasts some massive and hard-fighting trout. Nature was in evidence on the lakes with many different birds visiting including a newly hatched set of 11 ducklings. The sport was excellent, but not all anglers found it easy to bag up. Biggest fish went to Gordon Wray with a beautiful 6lbs 9ozs rainbow, but Gordon couldn’t get his last fish. The best angler on the day was Neil O’Shea with a four-fish bag of over 14lbs. Fish were mostly interested in smal imitative flies, and buzzers did the trick for many competitors. Well Done Neil.

Bargain buying for the budget-conscious SECONDHAND SUCCESS: Jo Spolton and, left, Sam Turner of Rumage
Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users Jo Spolton and Sam Turner are on a mission... to make buying secondhand a badge of honour. The Dorset duo are cofounders of Rumage, a website which makes it easier to buy secondhand. That’s because it gathers information from 15 sites to find the bargain for you. Originally launched as 2Hand in 2018 to help people make their money go further, the venture rebranded to Rumage earlier this year. While secondhand marketplaces have boomed in recent years, it seems the online experience is turning people off. According to research by Rumage, only one in five
people look at more than three websites when buying secondhand. Two in five say they would buy more secondhand if if was easier online and nearly half liked the sustainability of secondhand shopping. But many gave up and bought new if a secondhand item was not found within a fortnight. Now, though, with the cost of living crisis testing many household budgets to the limit, buying secondhand is expected to become even more popular. Jo, a mum of two and the CEO of Rumage, said: “I want to help people find what they need and remove the stigma of secondhand. “I want to make it a badge of
honour to grab a bargain. “Something to be proud of and shout about. “I’m on a mission to make secondhand a viable first choice for everyone.” Jo, 50, and Sam, 53, who is chief marketing officer, said that with so many platforms offering secondhand items, Rumage gave people more of a chance to make moneysaving choices by bringing them all together. But it also has a positive impact on the environment as extending the life-cycle of a product puts less strain on the planet and slows down the rate of consumption. Using Rumage, a simultaneous search can be made for secondhand products – from
bikes and appliances to clothes and home furnishings – across a diverse range of marketplaces. So far Rumage is connected to 15 sites but working behind the scenes on many more. The service is free. No payment is taken for items shown on rumage.com. Instead Rumage displays what’s on offer and enables users to find what they need without the hassle of searching all the sites individually. All transactions happen outside of Rumage which gets its income from agreements with many of the linked sites. Commission is earned when an item is purchased. Rumage also has several free guides to secondhand
New partner for ‘busier than ever’ law firm by Andrew Diprose Expanding law firm Frettens Solicitors has welcomed a new partner. James Hammersley, right, becomes the eighth new partner in the last three years and his arrival follows a period of rapid growth, promotions and new starters at the Christchurch-based firm. The experienced solicitor will head up Frettens’ wills, tax and trusts team in Christchurch. Fellow partner Lee Young heads up the Ringwood team. Matthew Fretten, managing partner,
said: “James is a fantastic addition to Frettens and joins us at a really exciting time. “Both James’s department and the firm
as a whole are bigger and busier than they’ve ever been. “Attracting a new partner of his expertise and experience is a real coup for us and, I believe, shows how we are now seen as a genuine alternative to the large regional firms in the area.” James joins Frettens from a large regional firm, where he was a partner and head of team. As well as advising clients on wills, powers of attorney and probate, he can also provide advice on technical tax and estate planning matters.

Pets
The often itchy issue of fleas
Fleas are often considered to be a seasonal nuisance, irritating for your pet as well as being annoying for you if you get nipped by one and have an infestation at home. But they’re a more serious problem than this and are now a year-long threat that can cause your pet distress as well as spreading disease. Centrally heated homes are the perfect year-round breeding ground for fleas who are attracted to the warm environment, so they aren’t just a spring and summer issue. Eggs can lay dormant in pet beds, carpets, rugs and upholstery for months before finding a host. Much of the life-cycle of the flea takes place in the animal’s environment, not on the animal itself. Protecting your pet and your family
requires this life-cycle to be broken by year-round protection and ideally by using a treatment that renders
the eggs unable to hatch. This way any that do transfer to the environment don’t start the cycle all over again.
Heavy infestations may lead to iron deficiency, anaemia and even death in particularly young animals. Reactive and one-off treatments are insufficient in preventing the spread of disease and do nothing to prevent the initial attack or break the life-cycle. A regular monthly treatment with an integrated product which not only kills any fleas that attack your pet, but also stops the development of eggs and therefore breaks the life-cycle is recommended. This approach will stop any initial infestation and protect your home, your pet and your family throughout the year. Your vet will advise on the best preventative flea treatment for your pets.
Vetsmiths was founded by Chris and Sam Devlin, a husband and wife team who wanted a different kind of vet . . . . . . one that’s completely independent so the commitment is simply to the animal and its owner. We’re really good at sniffing out the underlying problem, not just treating the symptoms...
