THE WORLD’S BEST ACROBATS AT MONKEY WORLD

Meet the world’s best acrobats at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset this half-term- the gibbons! Children visiting the park can celebrate International Gibbon Day with us by taking part in fun trails and quizzes whilst learning about the important work we do to protect primates worldwide, plus arts & crafts & Halloween activities in the Kid’s Centre!

As well as seeing the king of the swingers, Monkey World is home to over 260 primates, including over 50 chimpanzees, and Europe’s official crèche for orphaned orangutan infants. Many of the park’s residents have been neglected, kept in unnatural conditions, or experienced unbelievable cruelty. At Monkey World, they can now all enjoy the company of their own kind in a safe and natural environment.

Combining fun with conservation and animal education, self-guided audio tours explain all about man’s closest living relative. Visitors can see the stars of TV’s ‘Monkey Life’, then ‘monkey around’ in the south’s largest Great Ape Play Area for children with its huge variety of swings, slides, and climbing frames.

PLUS Kids go free on 31st October when in full Halloween fancy dress! Visit www.monkeyworld.org for full details and to book in!

New garden blessed by bishop

Most people need a friend

Could you befriend a person who is feeling lonely or isolated?

Wimborne Befriending Service says it is ‘desperately short of befrienders’ and has a waiting list of people aged 50 or over who live in the BH21 postcode who feel lonely or isolated.

The service’s Judi Runciman says: “It’s very rewarding when you light up someone’s face just by going to visit them and having a cup of tea and natter.” If you’d like to know more about befriending, contact 07717 748730.

A new memorial and reflection garden at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne, funded by the school’s trustees, has been blessed and dedicated by the Bishop of Salisbury.

The Rt Rev Stephen Lake blessed the facility, which includes a circular, central garden with seating and a lavender-lined path.

Guests were also entertained with musical and dance performances by pupils.

The Bishop said: “This is a garden of peace and beauty representing the whole of creation. It reminds us of our responsibility to look after it and is also a place for relationships to develop.”

Headteacher Katie Boyes said: “Our school trust has funded not only the garden but the groundworks required.

“We are extremely lucky to have the trust. We are also incredibly grateful to the bishop and Rev Canon Andrew Rowland of Wimborne Minster for coming.

“The garden is a wonderful addition to the school and as it matures it will blossom into something really superb.”

More pressure on foodbank

Verwood Foodbank says demand is increasing and it is giving out ‘significantly more’ food each month than is being donated.

A spokesman said: “We have some financial reserves which mean we are able to buy in food when stocks are low but this is putting additional pressure on food bank finances.”

The foodbank thanked local people for their support but has asked for further donations.

If you need food help or would like to donate, visit: ringwood. foodbank.org.uk/

Vandalism move

Following recent vandalism, Verwood Town Council has had a RADAR lock fitted to the parent and baby toilet at Ferrett Green.

People wishing to access the facility now need RADAR keys, which they can buy from the town council office from Mondays to Fridays, 9am-1pm.

Dalek bread!

Blade stunner!

Verwood Rotary Club’s Rustic Fayre raised just over £12,000.

There were demonstrations with birds of prey, morris dancers and Tae Kwon-do, terrier racing, mini-horses and dog agility. There was even a guest appearance by a very well-behaved dalek! Club members now have the enjoyable task of dividing all of the funds up to support charities, organisations and activities across the local community.

It is not too late to nominate a local club or charity for a possible donation.

Contact secretary@ verwoodrotary.org.uk.

Regular readers may recall Gary Smith, the welder who transforms old cutlery and unwanted metal into works of art, and who last year donated a piece called Flutterby to the Macmillan Caring Locally Christchurch charity auction, raising nearly £900.

The Dorset artist who works in Christchurch does private commissions and commercial pieces, including a showstopping sculpture inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, that adorns an apartment block in Westbourne. This year he donated a new piece called The Visitor which was auctioned at the Macmillan charity ball in the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth two weeks ago, raising more than £1,000.

“A year had gone by since the last Flutterby Ball and I promised I would do another sculpture for 2022,” says Gary.

“I made The Visitor specifically to raise money for the small local hospice and I’d like to thank MMP Electrovibe

UK who offered their electro polishing services for free.

A demon for detail, Gary describes how he made the poignant sculpture.

“The hand is made out of stainless steel washers, each one shaped to make it much more realistic, this means it takes longer to make but well worth it I think!

“The hand itself took around 20 hours. The butterfly was made out of recycled Kings cutlery which I heated to get some colours in to it. It took

about five hours.

“The sculpture was then mounted on a cherry wood base.”

“The event is called Flutterby, so I base my sculpture around butterflies, so this year I thought of a more personal idea; this being a hand with a butterfly on the finger.

“Many people see butterflies as representations of a loved one who has passed away.” macmillanlocal.org. garysmithweldedart.co.uk.

Valley’s transatlantic visitor

Andrea Board from Winchester in Virginia, USA, has been following the online content provided by Avon Valley Churches Facebook page since the beginning of the Pandemic. After over a year’s planning, Andrea finally made it over to meet the Avon Valley Churches congregations in person who welcomed her with open arms. During her visit Andrea renewed her baptismal vows at St Mary’s in Fordingbridge. She said: “I never thought that something so positive could come out of such a negative situation and yet here I am today. I am so grateful to all of you. From Saturday afternoon when I arrived, I was welcomed by people who have shaped my faith journey and have become my family and community.

“Relationships have deepened and more friendships have been formed.”

Andrea was introduced to AVC’s online provision by ordinand-in-training Jo Criscenti, whose sister she met when travelling. Since then, she hasn’t missed a service, a Thought for the Day, or a Saturday Conversation – all regular weekly items created and shared by members of the seven churches in the benefice.

Andrea also contributes her own monthly Thought for the Day on AVC’s popular Facebook page @avonvalleychurches.

With more than 1,000 online followers, and posts and videos reaching up to 10,000 views per month, Andrea is not the only cherished member of AVC’s global community which includes followers from Africa, Australia, India and Europe.

Revd John Towler said: “For the church Covid 19 was tragic in the devastation of loss of lives, and beneficial in terms of our outreach.

“Andrea’s story is ample testimony to this piece of technology that bridged the Atlantic and enabled her and many others locally, to renew a sense of connection and brought strength and comfort to her in troublous times.”

Dance group is looking for new members

The all-women Hobos Border Morris side is looking for people to join their fun and friendly dance group. They practise in Wimborne every other Tuesday through the winter and dance out in all their colourful glory in the spring and summer months.

If this sounds up your street, you are invited to try their taster workshop on Tuesday, October 25.

For more information or if you have any queries, email hobosbag@gmail.com.

Annual Poppy Appeal launched

The official launch of the Wimborne and District Poppy Appeal 2022 will be at 1000hrs on Saturday, October 29, in Wimborne Square.

The Appeal makes a vital contribution to supporting retired and injured Service personnel and their dependants in almost every aspect of daily life and it is both heartening and humbling to see how much the people of our area support this work year after year.

Poppy boxes and collecting tins will be distributed to many retail and social outlets throughout the area.

In Wimborne itself over the Remembrance fortnight, gazebos will be located daily both on the Square and at Waitrose.

Each will have a variety of Poppy-related items available.

The street collections will commence at 10am on October 29, when vehicles from the Dorset Military Enthusiasts Trust will be on parade.

A cry from the Town Serjeant, a trumpet call, and the purchase of the first poppy by the town mayor will all add to the event.

Volunteers are always needed to help with the stalls and collections so if you can offer an hour or so over the

Remembrance fortnight, you would be most welcome. There is a sheet on the noticeboard in the RBL clubhouse on West Borough where you can register your interest and book a slot. Alternatively, and should you have any queries or seek further information, contact Wimborne RBL Poppy Appeal via email at keigjoseph@btinternet.com or by text or call to 07799 466596.

Still no action on road safety outside school

Your magazine has been most helpful with seeking to improve road safety measures to protect children attending the new Wimborne First School in the area of Allenview Road.

In an edition last year I reported that the county council, with the agreement of the town council, had agreed to a number of measures which they (belatedly) recognised as important to child safety.

Nothing has been done!

Further, the county council has not responded to requests from one of it’s own councillors about what is happening (let alone me), and is seemingly ignoring Wimborne Town Council.

I deliberately did not vote at the recent town council elections.

There seemed no point

given that this part of local democracy appears to be powerless or indifferent to issues as important as children’s safety, otherwise they would have followed up.

In summary, both councils have agreed the additional measures needed to protect the lives of the small children for whom they have a duty of care.

Further these measures are not expensive or difficult, particularly when compared with the possible consequences.

But they are not pursued to implementation almost a year later.

Why? Will someone out there please respond. Perhaps even someone from either council.

Why consider trade deals with third world?

It’s incredibly rewarding when local people start to reach out because they’re right behind the ethos of what it is you’re doing.

Here at Love Local Trust Local that is starting to happen more and more.

Whether it’s government trade deals they disagree with, understanding the value of how good UK animal welfare practices are, having an insight into some awful things that are happening on farms in other parts of the world, they all have opinions and want to show their support for educating everyone on why eating home-grown UK food is so important.

This personal contact makes what we’ve done with Love Local feel so worthwhile.

Being an activist for British farming is something of which we’re proud.

In 2018 it was so apparent that we needed to do something to explain the importance of buying local to the general public so that they could feed themselves a healthy diet.

With the huge rising costs of energy it’s now even more important to put fresh ingredients on our tables to help feed people well. We should be working closely with the farmers, hospitality industry and our overstretched and brilliant NHS.

Our government have no idea of the importance of all the above, they just sell the food industry down the river like they have all the major industries in this country.

It’s shameful. We keep telling everyone that our farmers here in England have the highest standards of farming practices and some of the best in the world. Countries like Australia are vast, 35 times the size of the UK. It’s simply not a comparison.

Setting up new trade deals with countries like India is crazy.

Unfortunately, they don’t have any good farming practices and animal life in a third world country is not valued in the same way as it is in Western society so why are we doing trade deals with these countries?

It’s simple, greed and money for the UK government.

The remains of a woman murdered by her husband more than 20 years ago have been found in a Dorset garden.

Debbie Griggs, above, was 34 and pregnant when she was reported missing from her home in Deal, Kent, by her husband Andrew Griggs in May 1999. He denied being responsible for her disappearance but was found guilty of murder and jailed for life in October 2019 following a review by cold case detectives from Kent and Essex.

On October 5, specialist officers excavated the back garden of a property in St Leonards, Dorset. Andrew Griggs had moved to the property in July 2001.

DCI Neil Kimber, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “While Debbie’s family and friends continue to mourn her tragic loss to this day, I hope they can take some comfort in the knowledge that she can now be laid to rest.”

“Your staff are exemplary in every way. They care for my every need, showing genuine kindness and always go above and beyond the call of duty. The excellent chef caters for my special diet - all cooked to perfection. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Current resident

Get set to apply for new project funding

Groups can apply for up to £5,000 in funding for projects addressing cost-of-living challenges, arts, museums, heritage, community, physical activity and play activities.

Dorset Council has a pot of money on offer to help initiatives that make a difference.

Grants from £1,000 to £5,000 are available in the latest round of the

Community and Culture Project Fund, which opens on November 4.

The latest funding will prioritise applicants that address and support the cost-of-living challenge for vulnerable communities and those most in need in the council area.

The types of projects that can be considered will focus on: Community warm spaces especially in rural areas,

community food projects including lunch clubs and dinner clubs, foodbanks and low-level mental health projects

Councillor Laura Beddow, portfolio holder for culture, communities and customer services, said: “Last time around, we distributed more than £35,500 to local groups including theatre companies, groups that help people with learning disabilities, energy

champions and efforts to improve recycling of waste.

“This time round, we will prioritise groups who have a focus on supporting people through the cost-of-living challenge, but also welcome applications from other groups too.”

For more details on criteria, how to apply and application support, visit dorsetcouncil. gov.uk/community-andculture-project-fund.

£8000 raised in DocBike charity ride

More than 400 bikers took to Dorset roads as part of a charity ride out. The annual DocBike fundraiser, on September 25, saw the wheels hit the road on two routes - a 30-mile trek from Alderholt and a 35-mile ride from Bridport - with both finishing at Henstridge Airfield.

Organisers said the bikers raised more than £8,000 for the Dorset-based charity, which provides care to injured parties in motorcycle crashes.

Dorset riders Dr Ian Mew and critical care paramedic Mark Williams lead separate convoys through the Dorset countryside, followed by paramedic Rob Walker, who volunteers as a public engagement rider for the charity.

After completing their chosen route, motorcyclists received a warm welcome from crowds at Henstridge, where they were able to enjoy a display of stalls and live music. The event also provided DocBike and

the crew from Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance the opportunity to engage with bikers to raise awareness of their life-saving work.

Dr Mew, co-founder and a trustee of DocBike who is based at Dorset County Hospital, said: “While this event helps to raise much-needed funds for the charity, the support for what we do from the motorcycling community and beyond means so much more.

“Motorcyclists are statistically the

most vulnerable road users, being 56 times more likely to be killed per mile travelled than when in a car.

“The work of the charity to reduce motorcycle collisions while being able to provide life-saving critical care to anyone who needs it (not just motorcyclists), forms the cornerstones of our work and we are immensely grateful to every person and organisation across the county for their unwavering support.”

For more details, visit docbike.org.

Silver

A collection of silver, amassed by a Somerset collector, is included in the Charterhouse specialist sale of silver jewellery and watches on Thursday, November 3.

“The market for silver, jewellery and watches continues to remain strong despite what is going on in this country and over the water,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse.

The silver has been collected over many years having predominantly been bought from West Country auctioneers including Charterhouse in Sherborne.

The lots of silver date from the late 18th century through to the early 20th century.

The collection was on show in numerous cabinets in the owner’s living room where he liked to sit surrounded by all his shiny treasures.

The silver, which includes tea sets, trays, spoons, other cutlery, dishes, sugar sifters, tureens and salvers was always kept clean and polished.

Overall, it is estimated to sell for more than £20,000 and is only being sold due to ill health, Charterhouse are now

accepting further entries for their November specialist auctions including an Asian Art auction on November 2, followed by silver, jewellery and watches on November 3 and with antiques and interiors on November 4.

n For valuations, help and advice on these auctions contact Richard Bromell and the team at Charterhouse, The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne, Dorset on 01935 812277 or via info@ charterhouse-auction.com

Fabric of dressmaking society

Famous in the dressmaking community, Stitch Fabrics by M Rosenberg & Son began in 1948 as a market stall. It was started by Maurice and his wife Freda (pictured right). As they dealt in fabrics, they learned to distinguish quality cloth, and this knowledge became the basis of their rapidly-growing business. When son Geoff was born, they passed their experience on, and he took the business to the next level. From market stalls to exhibition halls, the company then started a Travelling Fabric Show across the country to bring the season’s collections to the local population. They now travel the country and are renowned for arriving each season with their latest range of unique, quality, and designer fabrics. They sell online too - something that took off during the Pandemic - sending parcels all across the world. Known online as Stitch Fabrics, it is now an international business but still operates close to its roots. It is still family-run, with Geoff

in the forefront, and is still based on the foundation of quality materials, reasonable prices, vast fabric knowledge, and excellent customer service. Mention unusual or designer fabrics and their name will a;ways pop up. Their last Dorset fabric sale of this year is at the Digby Hall in Sherborne, DT9 3AA on Thursday, November 3, from 3-7pm and Friday, November 4 from 10am-3pm. You won’t want to miss it! Political round-up

Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher

Few would contest wisdom of PM’s policy

Means and ends are the meat and drink of politics.

Few would contest the wisdom of our new Prime Minister’s key policy objective to grow our economy and reverse years of low productivity.

One of the key means of doing this is to incentivise people into work and encourage those in part-time work to increase their hours.

Employment has always been the best route out of poverty and it is great to hear the Truss government giving fresh emphasis and recognition to this truism.

There is a welcome public consensus about the objective of economic growth but there is disagreement about the best means to bring it about.

My take is that politicians must work with the grain of human nature and recognise that people will work harder if their extra effort is properly rewarded.

That is why I favour lower taxes

so that people can retain more of their income to spend on their own priorities.

Similarly, we should be ensuring that those who receive in-work benefits are not penalised by working longer hours. We should also be encouraging people to become entrepreneurs by making selfemployment, once again,

an attractive alternative.

As one of the few Conservative MPs who voted and spoke against the increases in National Insurance when first announced by Rishi Sunak, it was a pleasure to see almost unanimous support in Parliament for the legislation reversing that policy.

This change is one of the means by which the economy can grow and is a victory over the anti-growth coalition and Treasury orthodoxy which has dominated our economic thinking for too long.

The next stage in this process should be to ensure that those in employment do not find percentage rises in their wages and salaries being exceeded by increases in benefits.

No one is immune from the cost of living crisis with businesses and households having to respond to the challenges posed thereby.

The same principles apply to

our local councils.

It was, therefore, disappointing to read a statement by the Leader of Dorset Council, Cllr Spencer Flower, contesting the opinion of the Local Government Minister, Paul Scully, that there is still ‘fat to be trimmed from councils’. While our Council has performed well compared with many, by reducing management costs by £10million and having a programme of £30million in efficiency savings over a four-year period, it cannot be correct that there are no more reductions in expenditure which can be made to help insulate local residents from ever higher rates of council tax.

I, therefore, invite readers to contact me with their own ideas as to where savings and efficiencies in Dorset can be achieved. Please write to chopec@parliament.uk.

Beware the inaction of county councillors

Although it is tempting to crow about national politics right now, I want to use this column to focus on an issue literally close to my heart. That’s the state of Shaftesbury’s high street. Before all non-Shastonians turn the page, stick with me please. What the town is going through and the lack of action on the issue from Dorset councillors should strike a note of concern all through the vale.

As you may be aware, the Shaftesbury high street is really struggling. There have been nearly a dozen shop closures this year.

Whilst the town thrived during the Covid-enforced pedestrianisation, trade has collapsed since this ended last summer.

The town council voted in favour of permanent pedestrianisation in June 2021. Like many residents, I

wanted to know why nothing has happened on the matter since. So, I sent a Freedom of Information request (an FOI) to Dorset council to ask them what meetings the person responsible for Highways, Travel and Environment, Councillor Ray Bryan, had on the matter since June 2021. The answer? No meetings on pedestrianisation. And therefore – unsurprisinglyno action.

What is interesting, though, is that Councillor Bryan did have three meetings on the town’s Thursday market between August and November 2021. Yet he didn’t invite either the Shaftesbury Mayor, Councillor Brown, or the town’s two Dorset Councillors Cook and Beer.

Curiously, the meetings were attended by councillors from Blandford and Purbeck. He even held one of the meetings in Shaftesbury and didn’t

invite anyone from the town. What we are seeing here is local democracy failing. It’s often been suspected that the unitary administration out of Dorchester has little time for what town and parish councils have to say. We have proof of that now. Not just in the FOI response, but in the inaction concerning

the number of shops closing on the high street, and the deferral of any further consultation until the summer of next year.

Other towns and parishes should take note. Don’t expect Dorset Council to act on anything you vote for.

Criticism is not just reserved for the Tory administration in Dorchester though. What have the Lib Dem county councillors achieved on the issue, on behalf of the town they represent? By the looks of it, they’ve not even secured a meeting with Councillor Bryan.

Labour is committed to handing real and lasting economic and political devolution across our towns, communities and to people across the country.

And we would at least be banging the door down in Dorchester to make sure we got a meeting.

We Will Remember Them.

As the country builds up to November 11 – Armistice Day – all our thoughts turn to the sacrifices of those who have fought for our country.

From the First World War to the Falklands, the Battle of Britain to Baghdad and beyond, our Armed Forces are the best of us all.

Remembrance activities in the UK – and here in the South West – are led by the Royal British Legion.

The RBL supports the Armed Forces community in a myriad of ways, with hundreds of thousands of volunteers doing what they can to honour not only the fallen, but those still serving – and their families.

Fun day at the town’s green fest

The Mayor of Wimborne Minster, Carol Butter, with town crier Chris Brown and world-record swimmer Oly Rush opened a great first day at Planet Wimborne Green Festival week.

Wimborne Community Theatre were on the Minster Green

along with the children’s display inside the Minster last weekend.

It was a great fun day event, with much to see and get involved in.

For a donation of £10 or more – all of which will go to the RBL – we will publish your message of up to 25 words. It can be dedicated to one of The Fallen, a veteran, serving personnel or our brave forces in general.

“We are passionate about supporting our Armed Forces, as we know the people of Dorset are too,” said publisher David Armishaw.

“This is one way we can show our appreciation of those who take care of us each and every day – and we are proud to do so.”

Simply follow the instructions below to place your message, and we will remember them.

Those faraway giants

The giant planets Jupiter and Saturn have now moved back into the evening sky, as the Earth pursues its ceaseless dance with the rest of the Solar System. Look mid-evening for these two yellowish objects in the south-east and south respectively. Planets are normally brighter than the stars in front of which they move, but planets don’t actually shine: what we see is reflected sunlight bounced back towards us from great distances across the solar system. Currently, Jupiter, in the constellation of

Pisces, is about 600 million kilometres away from us, and Saturn, in Capricornus, about 1400 million (1.4 billion). Light from Jupiter has been travelling towards us for about 45 minutes, and Saturn’s yellowish hue represents light that bounced off it about one and a quarter hours ago. So everything we see in the night sky is in the past – even the Moon, just over a lightsecond away.

The most remote galaxies’ light began its journey long before the Earth ever existed.

Remember them, and support the Royal British Legion

On November 4 the New Stour & Avon magazine will publish your messages of remembrance and dedications.

For a donation of £10 or more, your message will be published in our remembrance feature, in print and online, with all donations given in full to the Royal British Legion.

Cooking... with Martha Legg

Cod With a Mediterranean Ragu

I have to say that the diet is working well! I have lost nearly three-quarters of a stone in two months.

I know it’s not massive. But I am hoping that as I have lost it gradually, I can keep it off. We have been looking for simple meals that are quick to cook, tasty and low in carbs and this one fits the bill.

Fridays is our day to have the grandchildren and as children we always had fish on Fridays - this is the perfect solution.

I have been bereft this week as our eldest grandchild has started school! She has only just turned four and seems far too young to go to school.

For her last day treat with us, we took her and her younger sister to the soft play area near Hurn.

With picnic packed, we arrived and let the children loose.

I followed Ellie and Martin was in charge of Lizzie. His idea of grandparenting was to plonk her in the toddlers area and then to go and sit in the café area!

I came back and reminded him that he should be with her! I must admit, later on, he got very involved.

Have you ever seen a grown man trying to go down a slide for under fives?! It’s hilarious!

He could only just get to the top of the slide and then proceeded to slide down with Lizzie in his arms and Ellie by his side!

Ah, memories!

1 onion, peeled and finely chopped

1 14-ounce can chopped or diced tomatoes

2 medium cod loin or any firm white fish.

2 teaspoons dried parsley

Heat the oil in a large pan with a lid over medium heat.

Sauté the onions until they begin to soften. Stir in the garlic, red pepper, courgette, basil, oregano, paprika, salt and pepper.

Cook for a couple of minutes until they begin to soften a little.

Add the chickpeas and the tomatoes.

Fill the tomato can a quarter full with water and pour that in as well.

Bringmix to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Nestle the cod loin in with the tomatoey ragu. Cover the pan and simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes or until the fish is opaque and cooked through.

Tasty hot bangers for those cold nights

by Lorraine Gibson

Here’s another delicious and comforting sausage recipe for these longer, chillier nights.

Sausages with beans and greens

Prepare: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

Serves: 3 (or 2 with leftovers)

Ingredients

1-2 tbsp olive oil

6 Waitrose Toulouse-Style or Lincolnshire Pork Sausages

1 onion, finely sliced

2 cloves garlic, sliced

2 rosemary sprigs

100ml white wine or cider (optional)

250ml Chicken Stock

1 heaped tsp wholegrain mustard, plus extra to serve

400g can cannellini beans

200g pack baby leaf greens, thick stalks

Health & Wellbeing

removed and leaves shredded Crusty bread (optional)

Method

1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large sauté pan or shallow casserole over a medium

heat. Add sausages and fry, turning regularly, for 10 minutes until golden all over. Remove from pan and add onion, garlic and rosemary (and more oil if needed). Season and cook gently for 6-8 minutes until soft.

2. Stir in wine or cider, if using, and allow to bubble until almost evaporated, then add stock, mustard and beans. Bring to a simmer, return sausages with greens to the pan and cook gently for 5 minutes until the sausages are completely cooked through. Serve with crusty bread, if liked, and mustard.

Cook’s tip

If you prefer not to use alcohol, add a splash of red or white wine vinegar for acidity and make up the rest of the quantity with extra chicken stock.

You don’t need a coach, do you?

You don’t need a coach. You’ve got everything sorted. You don’t need to talk to anyone about what you’re up to or what you’ve got going on in your life.

You’re all over it. You’re aware of your weaknesses. You know how you sabotage your efforts.

You know what you need to do and when to do it. You don’t need encouragement.

You certainly don’t need challenging.

And you don’t need anyone’s help to unravel anything.

So what that you’re a bit stressed, overwhelmed or chasing your tail right now, it’ll pass.

And it doesn’t matter that you haven’t got a purpose and you actually can’t stand your job / partner / life, etc.

It’ll sort itself out one way or

another.

You’ve got plenty of time left to get to where you want to be, so no point rushing.

And it’s okay to put yourself last and sort everyone else and their problems before your own.

You absolutely don’t need to waste your hard-earned cash on some sort of therapy thing. You can spend it on things that will really make you happy.

I mean, what can a coach do for you that you can’t do for yourself?

It feels epic when someone holds space JUST FOR YOU.

Seriously, how often do you get undivided attention from someone who really listens to you, not just surface level ‘yeah, yeah, whatever,’ type listening, but deeply listening to you, ‘getting you’ and

understanding you?

How often does someone ask you how you really feel, what you want, making sure that you make decisions for you and not for someone else?

And when do you ever get to say what you think without someone palming off advice or sitting there in judgement for what you believe?

A coach is someone that reconnects you to what you really think, feel, love and want in life. Someone that you can actually share your deepest thoughts with.

Someone that shines a light on areas where you’re holding yourself back, challenges you in order for you to learn and grow.

Someone that believes in you when you may not believe in yourself. Someone that reignites energy, motivation

and desire within you.

Someone that helps you to unravel your values, to find truth and meaning.

Someone that empowers you to put yourself first, do things the way you want to, have what you want, to know that you always have a choice.

Someone that can provide you with an ongoing presence at your side, offering you stability and support.

A coach is a fabulous and life-changing ally to have and that is why we ALL need a coach.

Hip pain and how chiropractic can help

Hip pain and how chiropractic can help:

Being such a large joint, pain in the hip can be debilitating and frustrating, often causing difficulty with exercise, walking, or even just sitting on the floor playing with your grandkids.

Hip pain can be felt in the groin, down the thigh, the side of the hip or even up into the lower back!

What are some common causes of hip pain? Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome

This is a triad of symptoms caused by an excessively tight glute muscle (tendonitis), and inflammation of the two trochanteric bursae (bursitis) – the bursa acts like a cushion that protects the joint but can become overly-inflamed through excessive use or strain. The pain with this syndrome is typically felt on the outside of the hip and swelling can be felt too.

Degenerative Joint Disease

Or simply – wear and tear. The hip joint is a deep ball and socket joint that can be affected by overuse. When our joints feel excess pressure the bone will lay down more bone material in order to protect the joint itself, this extra bone narrows the joint space making it stiffer and harder to move.

This is what wear and tear is and it often causes groin pain and particularly pain in the cold and damp.

Femoroacetabular impingement

Like wear and tear, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is caused by excess strain to the joint. The difference being that the bony grown is either on the ball joint or the socket joint itself (rather than all over), causing the hip join to ‘pinch’ at certain angles. FAI can also be felt in younger people, especially those who are sporty.

Groin strain

One of the most common causes of hip pain is a strain of the muscles in the groin. The adductor muscles and hip flexors attach

right into the hip joint and can pull the hip joint up and in and cause groin pain from that mechanism. The muscles can refer pain over the hip and even up into the lower back.

How can chiropractic help?

We always start with a consultation, that allows us to ask questions about your hip that will help us determine the likely cause of pain. Then we do some tests on your nerves, muscles, and joints to confirm the findings and give you a diagnosis.

Sometimes we feel like further imaging may be necessary and we can organise this privately or through your GP.

Your findings and diagnosis is discussed in your results session where we go over how chiropractic can help and what we would recommend. Your first treatment would always be in this session.

The treatment modalities we use can effectively treat the above-mentioned conditions, helping to alleviate pain and increase mobility. We use techniques such as adjustments, soft tissue work, dry needling, stretching, mobilisation and give you specific exercises to help strengthen your hip and help prevent the pain from coming back.

A balancing act with a Hallowe’en theme

Words and pics by JO GREEN, a former allotmenteer, forager, amateur herbalist, pickler and jam maker who squeezed her allotment greenery into her tiny garden

I used to love the Great British Allotment show.

They did a feature on garlands. I wanted to replicate their showy beauty with autumn garden produce.

At the Anchor pub in Seatown, I remembered seeing a magnificent real hops garland draping over the top of the bar. They are a joy to work with as they smell so good and are so light. That’s the thing - the more wreaths and garlands you make the more you realize the importance of the wreath strength.

morph the autumnal look into a Hallowe’en theme.

In the freezer I have jet black crows’ feathers from a thousand walks.

And, as I walk by Jack O’Lantern pumpkins, I wonder how much more weight the frame can take. We are about to find out!

Fall in love with your conservatory again.

I had been on a woodland walk and noticed a knotted vine looped round the base of a tree. Well, it was almost like the woods had left me a gift so I could hardly refuse. As I said I was hoping to make an autumn garland but had to adapt it to a wreath as, well frankly, I don’t have anywhere palatial to hang such a marvel.

Also, the plants I wanted to decorate the wreath with were making the whole thing droop just a little too much!

I wove in red Virginia Creeper, dried Honesty and Plump Rose hips all from the garden. The rosy apples I have stored in the garage beckoned and added the final studded glory!

I say ‘final’ very loosely.

With half term nearly upon us I have been planning to

Fuel-saving tips for a frugal winter

Being worried sick about fuel poverty is a fact of life for so many people right now. And while insensitive and patronising advice can be jarring when there’s little you can do about it, these 10 practical tips from CAP East Dorset & Ringwood Debt Centre’s might help:

Put your health first Keep yourself and your family warm and eat hot meals, especially on colder days, so physical and mental wellbeing isn’t at risk.

Ensure meter readings are accurate and that you’re only paying for energy you use.

Investigate whether your home needs insulation to keep heat you are paying for inside rather than escaping through the roof and walls. To find local support for boiler grants and free loft insulation, etc, try

Can your home be more energy efficient? There’s information about measures you can take to lower costs at gov.uk/improveenergy-efficiency.

Heat yourself instead of the room

It’s likely to be more cost effective than having the thermostat up high. Do wear a jumper, thermal socks, and a thick blanket before deciding whether or not to raise the thermostat.

Use cold water for handwashing, take shorter showers and unplug the microwave

Little steps but they’ll help save money. Soap kills the bacteria, not hot water. A microwave uses energy 24/7 to power its

Hannah Hobbs-Chell is a horticulturist and garden designer/consultant. If you have a question for her, email:hannah. hobbschell@outlook. com including a picture if relevant

Well it’s definitely cooler, and we’ve even had the first frost since I last wrote, but there is still plenty to enjoy in the garden.

Here are the answers to a couple of your questions:

I’d love to grow my own large pumpkins with the kids, but what is the best way to do this?

Well it is the season for pumpkins that’s for sure! And they are both decorative and delicious.

Pumpkins are easy and fun for children and adults alike to grow, but they do need some space and time! Pumpkins are part of the squash family, which includes courgettes, marrows and butternut squash.

These plants love food, water and space to ramble away.

Start with (bought) seed in April in a greenhouse, cold frame or windowsill, and transfer outdoors to its permanent planting place in May, when the nights are less chilly and the risk of frost has passed.

Once they start to find their feet, pumpkins will begin to produce long stems.

You will need to feed and water your pumpkins regularly, or provide them with suitable organic matter in the form of mulch which will supply them with food and water (mulch reduces evaporation and conserves soil moisture).

If feeding, start with high nitrogen feed until they

Hannah’s horticulture

flower, then switch to a high potassium feed such as Tomorite or similar.

Leave the pumpkins on the plant for as long as possible, but harvest the pumpkins before the first frosts.

Here’s the important bit for those who want giant pumpkins! Normally, we wouldn’t limit the number of fruits that we allow to develop, however if your aim is to grow big, then limiting the fruits on the plants will ensure that all the energy the plant has goes into producing the 1/2/3 pumpkins left.

I have a couple of lovely Japanese Acers, but they have outgrown their space a bit this year. Can I prune them?

Yes! Acers are truly beautiful and extremely versatile in the garden. I don’t know what variety you have, and how much they have outgrown their space, but in essence these trees can be pruned back happily with a little knowledge. First, do not prune now! Whilst many shrubs can be pruned now, there are some that struggle with this and risk infection and dieback.

A brief horticultural lesson coming up – in the autumn, plants have a natural mechanism to preserve themselves and prepare for the cooler, darker months ahead. This is why leaves change colour and eventually fall from deciduous plants. They know that there is a net energy loss for them to retain leaves, as the

light levels are too low to compensate for the energy expended in moving water, reducing transpiration from wind and cold conditions, and keeping cells warm enough to survive. Added to this is the risk from winter winds which, if fully leafed

up, would lead to wind rock and damage. In order to lose leaves, and retain as much nutrition as possible in their core to survive and thrive next year, the sap falls and starts to travel down into the branches and trunk of the tree where it is better insulated and protected.

However, this presents a problem if we prune or introduce a wound where outside organisms can get in. Acers are prone to this, and if infection from pruning travels down into the stems and festers it can lead to dieback, limb loss etc. So prune when the sap starts to rise again, often late January/early February. You can tell as you will see the buds on the stems start to swell a little.

Pruning at this time will push any possible infection out but will not cause a big energy draining bleed of sap if pruned later in the spring.

Farming & Environment

A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.

As I write this, Hallowe’en approaches, but we don’t require spooky spells or master magicians to make extraordinary things happen at High Mead Farm; a little bit of magic happens here every day!

I’m not sure if those little black cats have anything to do with it, (they’ve certainly crossed our paths a time or two!) but putting superstition to one side, for High Mead, October has been a very lucky month. The mild weather has been very pleasant to work in for one, we haven’t been held up by too much rain, and the produce has been growing fast and furiously. Rachel and her horticultural team have been particularly busy, not just with land preparation

and harvest, but in testing different farming methods and introducing our CoFarmers to some slightly more unusual produce. Rachel clearly has the magical touch, especially when it comes to growing pumpkins. It is evident there has been much love and attention lavished on our ‘super squashes’, resulting in quite the largest fruit I have ever seen. Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother would be most impressed. A bumper crop of pumpkins is not their only win... the team has been busy testing green manure methods too. Green manure is agricultural alchemy, the process of sowing fast-growing plants to cover bare soil. Their foliage smothers weeds

Clean, 2022, conventional bales of meadow hay. Large quantities available £4.50 a bale, delivery or collection Contact Katie - 07730 398975

and their roots help with soil structure and prevent soil erosion. The plants in the green manure mix fix nitrogen to the soil which enriches it for next year’s crops.

Following the green theme, the glass-house is full of minute micro-greens; tiny taste sensations introduced to the farm by Chef Nik, quick to grow and packed with potential health benefits. The Co-Farmers have loved learning about these super foods, and cooking with them too, in addition to filling the shop with a whole host of ‘fruits and roots’. A treasure trove of tasty treats. Another notable achievement and something that has experienced a growth spurt this month, is Louis’ shed.

Louis, one of the farm’s long-standing volunteers, has been building the shed for

as long as I can remember, toiling away, day after day, using only donated wood and recycled timber from old sheds considered past their best. It’s fair to say that Louis’ shed is a real labour of love, so to see the building suddenly so close to completion has filled us all with excitement.

The Friends of Canford School heard about Louis’ project and were so taken with his efforts that they pledged to purchase the roofing materials, so this marvellous edifice will be weatherproof by Christmas. Canford School has enjoyed a long partnership with the farm, with pupils volunteering most Monday afternoons and two pupils having helped us in the shop too. Their hard work and generosity are much appreciated.

New measures have been introduced to stop the spread of bird flu as cases soar.

Chief veterinary officers have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading.

From midday last Monday (October 17), it became a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Great Britain to follow strict biosecurity measures.

Implementing the highest levels of biosecurity measures on farm is the most effective way to reduce the risk of disease spreading within flocks, according to Defra. The introduction of the AIPZ comes after the country has faced its largest ever outbreak of avian flu, with 190 cases confirmed across the UK since late October 2021 - more than 30 of these confirmed since the beginning of the month.

Now, keepers with more than 500 birds will need to restrict access for non-essential people on their sites, workers will need to change clothing and footwear before entering bird enclosures and site vehicles will need to be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Backyard owners with smaller numbers of poultry including chickens, ducks and geese must also take steps to limit the risk of the disease spreading to their animals.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advises that the risk to public health from the virus is very low and the Food

Farming & Environment

Flu cases spark crackdown

Standards Agency says that avian influenzas pose a very low food safety risk. The AIPZ, now in force across Great Britain, does not include a nationwide requirement to house birds, but this is being kept under review.

It does mean birdkeepers must:

• Keep free ranging birds in fenced areas, and that ponds, watercourses and permanent standing water must be fenced off (except in specific circumstances e.g. zoo birds)

• Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy

• Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures

• Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas

• Keep domestic ducks and geese separate from other poultry

• Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources

• Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds

Keepers should report suspicion of disease to APHA on 03000 200 301.

Fancy a brush with beautiful Basil?

Hello, I’m Basil!

I am a six-year-old jackapoo.

I was found alone and taken to the Pound. When nobody came to collect me, Waggy Tails offered me a place and they are going to find me a super forever home where I will be loved and cared for.

I am not able to tell them too much about myself, but they know I love treats!

I enjoy my walks and love to sniff about in the field looking for gaps under the fence. I like to have cuddles a lot. I’m a busy boy, typical terrier with lots of energy. I

am making friends slowly with other dogs but can be a little reactive to them. I would like a home where I get lots of exercise, lots of cuddles and lots of treats please.

If you are able to offer me or one of my lovely friends a forever home or a foster home please contact our office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@waggytails. org.uk or visit waggytails. org.uk. We also have lots of other dogs looking for their forever homes.

Watch out for dodgy dealers

Are you thinking about getting a dog? Why not consider the many animal charities who would be incredibly grateful if you’d consider rehoming one of theirs?

They have many lovely dogs looking for good homes and can give you all the support and advice that you’d need to be a successful and happy dog-owner.

However, if you are aiming to buy a puppy, please go cautiously and bear in mind that the RSPCA says that a shocking 87 per cent of their puppy-trade calls are about animals bought over the internet.

Unprincipled sellers frequently use the internet to their advantage to advertise and sell farmed puppies so to avoid being fooled by them, here is some invaluable advice from the RSPCA on how to spot their advertisements.

Read ads carefully, looking out for these give-away signs that something may be wrong:

Is the same contact number on more than one advert? Google the number - has it been used on other puppy adverts? Descriptions are sometimes copied

and pasted and used on more than one advertisement - Google the text to see if it’s been used previously, word-for-word.

The words ‘miniature’ and ‘teacup’ can indicate dealers capitalising on cute, popular terms. Have the photos of the puppies been used on other ads? Right click on an image, select ‘search Google for image’ and see if it’s been used before.

‘Vaccinated early’; if the advert says a puppy’s vaccinated, check how old he or she is. Puppies cannot be vaccinated before they’re four to six weeks old.

If someone’s advertising a three-week-old vaccinated puppy, they’re lying.

Pet passport? If the puppy has a passport, it has likely been imported.

Are they really Kennel Club registered?

Ask for original documents and check with the KC before committing to buy.

Promises of ‘free insurance’ and ‘puppy packs’ don’t confirm that the advert is from a legitimate breeder.

If you see a suspicious advert, report it to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999. For more information, see their Puppy Trade Campaign online at rspca.org.uk.

Bless these pets

Tails were wagging at St. John’s Church, Holdenhurst Village, as the first pet blessing in three years turned out to be a great success.

This time , the service was an all-dog affair, since the ponies were too muddy and the local cats, presumably, were already feeling bountifully blessed.

Among the four-legged congregation was Rusty, a nattily-kerchiefed labradoodle who, according to Sue Denning of Caring Canines charity which organises doggy visits to elderly care-home residents, listened intently to Reverend Janice Sear’s sermon.

Sue said: “Maybe he remembered that following the blessings, Janice gave them a choice of a cheese, sausage or biscuit treat!”

38 New Stour & Avon, October 21, 2022 stouravonmagazine.co.uk Pets

Up to 45% of pets show different levels of fear when they hear fireworks.

Here are some simple steps to help alleviate their anxiety:

Ease your dog’s fear of fireworks Walks should be in daylight hours.

Build a den with favourite blanket/s and toys. This is a safe space for them to hide away. Layering blankets over the top to darken the den can make them feel even safer.

Keep the television or radio on during the fireworks.

Close doors, windows and curtains to reduce the sound and flashing lights.

Pheromones are available in different forms (diffuser, tablet, collar). These are a useful addition alongside all of the above.

In some cases, your pet may be so severely affected by fireworks that they cannot settle, damage furniture or even soil indoors.

If you know this happens, we recommend an early appointment with your vet to discuss options.

Help your cat during firework season

Keep your cat indoors and provide plenty of hiding places for them to retreat to.

Doors and windows should be shut to ensure there’s no escaping.

Ensure your cat is microchipped in case they decide to run away, hide and become lost.

Pets

Rabbits and guinea pigs during the fireworks

Consider bringing them indoors (a shed or garage) when it gets dark, or partially cover outdoor houses to provide shelter and hidey places.

Provide more bedding for burrowing and hiding. This will help mask the loud bangs and whizzes.

fireworks

Pets often act out of character when frightened, so it’s important not to punish this behaviour.

Some want to hide and be left, whereas some may seek comfort. Do whatever is right for your pet.

If you’re unsure how to manage your pet’s behaviour during this stressful time, contact your vet so that a plan can be put in place.

Archaeology this autumn

The adult education course Face the Past 1 looked at past people from around the world.

Now, the six-week course Face the Past 2 will examine past people of the British Isles. It will allow you to be introduced to them as they would have looked, as well as how they lived and died.

From the man who lived in the time before Stonehenge, to the tragic case of an 18th century ‘witch’; from an Anglo-Saxon warrior to the real face of Elizabeth I (and many periods in between). Hear their stories and look them in the eye, on a course that puts these people back into their cultures and the many artefacts they would have known, and been buried with.

No need for magic wand to take part in this

Annie, 9 to 5 and The Greatest Showman.

Extraordinarily Delicate show about body frustration

As a creative group, Extraordinary Bodies has gained a reputation for performances that are both visually stunning and thought-provoking.

Comprising performers both disabled and non-disabled, their work is pure theatre.

Now they are bringing their latest performance, Delicate, to Poole’s Lighthouse Theatre.

Written by Jamie Beddard, Delicate is:

“A show about how things need to fall apart before they can fall into place.”

It’s about four people with different lives who are united by their frustration at their body changing, ageing, breaking and no longer obeying. Outraged that they can’t override this, they climb, hang, balance, slide, collapse, hold and hug.

They examine marks life has left on their bodies.

In the background to this physical performance, fragments of film and audio mirror these marks in the wounds inflicted on the planet.

Delicate is at The Lighthouse on November 2. For booking contact: lighthousepoole.co.uk/

Creepy gothic farce bolts into county

Inspired by the classic gothic horror film of the 1930s and heading for Dorset soon is Gonzo Moose’s fast-paced Is That A Bolt in Your Neck? - a clever mix of spooky paranoia, surreal nightmare and frantic farce. The spooky mood is set with a castle that looms, dark and foreboding, over a small mountain village.

Inside the foreboding pile, Dr Chekhov, a brilliant and reclusive scientist, is working in secrecy.

Outside, as the villagers prepare for Christmas, they become increasingly alarmed.

Strange shadows linger at the castle windows, and every night brings blood-curdling cries of pain.

What is Chekhov doing? What hideous experiments is he

perpetrating? What unimaginable horror might emerge from his laboratory?

And will any of it spoil Christmas?

All will be revealed in this gripping comedy horror.

They promise you’ll gasp, laugh and be amazed at the horrific experimentations, the mindboggling love, and the sensational death-defying finale!

Two dates are planned as part of the Artsreach autumn season of performances in rural communities. Miss them if you dare …

Saturday, November 19, 7:30pm at Stalbridge Hall, 01963 362978 and Sunday, November 20, 7:30pm at the Allendale Centre, Wimborne, 01202 887247.

Culture project to enhance community

Culture is often disparaged as something which is done to people but a group of five New Forest organisations are hoping to change that.

They comprise Culture in Common, a £1m project which will run for three years in the New Forest area, beginning in Totton and the Waterside and arriving in New Milton and Avon Valley in years two and three.

The programme’s name is inspired by the ancient tradition of commoning, along with the ambition to unite people through a shared vision of arts and culture driven by local people.

Organisers want people to have their say via a survey at cultureincommon.co.uk. You can also book a speaker for the project by contacting coordinator Mai Brillet at mai.brillet@energiseme.org.uk.

Museum aims to unlock past lives through ancient DNA

The Museum of East Dorset is collaborating with the Francis Crick Institute in a nationwide research project. Funded by the Wellcome Foundation, the project seeks to establish the whole-genome history and evolution in a thousand ancient people from Great Britain, for medical research. It will also give the museum information and fresh insight into people from the past. DNA will be analysed from the skeletal remains of people who lived thousands of years ago in and around Tarrant Hinton. Remains of these individuals were found during excavations conducted by Wimborne Archaeological Group between 1968 and 1984.

The area was occupied from the Bronze Age, through the Iron Age and into RomanoBritish times, up to AD 388. Tiny samples have been taken from 17 burials for a DNA analysis.

It is expected that the aDNA analysis may take up to 12 months to complete. Museum director Chezzie Hollow said that the museum will await the results with great interest and share any significant findings with the public.

These two have got to be having a laugh

They say that laughter’s the best medicine, so if you’re in need of a bit of a boost, get yourself to Christchurch.

Aiming to put the town firmly on the comedy map, the Regent has a selection of top TV headliners ready to perform as part of its Regent Comedy Club 2022 programme.

Among them are leading circuit comedians, John Robins and Suzi Ruffell who’ll be joined on stage by a supporting line-up of two other acts and a guest host. That’s a pretty decent dose of gags for £17 a ticket.

Comedian, digital DJ, author, podcast host and all-round vibe-magnet, John Robins is up on November 10. The Edinburgh Comedy Award and Gold Aria Award winner has appeared on lots of telly shows, including

Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo, Stand-Up Central, Russell Howard’s Good News and Drunk History.

Robins has been described as ‘one of the most exciting

and distinctive voices in comedy and on stage... in absolute command of what he’s doing, having a room hanging on his every word, and laughing at quite a lot of them.’

Next comes suited and booted comedian, Suzi Ruffell. She will take to the stage on December 7 with five sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival under her belt and having racked up critical acclaim from reviewers and audiences alike.

She’s now touring with her show Dance Like Everyone’s Watching, which saw her nominated for Best Stand Up Show in the National Comedy Awards 2021.

Ruffell’s a screen veteran with appearances on the likes of Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, The Jonathan Ross Show, Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, The Last Leg, and There’s Something About Movies.

A trio of fire, spirit and joy

Yet again, Artsreach, Dorset’s touring arts charity, has come up trumps by bringing a uniquely uplifting show to Dorset’s communities.

Featuring Serbia’s leading Roma violinist, Branko Ristic and UK accordionist, Faith Ristic who return to the county next month for a two-date tour, it will be a high-energy affair, combining tabor pipe, double bass and guitar with the accordion and violin. Faith i Branko take audiences from melancholic violin laments to storming

Kolos and explorations into jazz improvisation, swing, Gypsy Rumba and Turkish and Indian-influenced songs.

It’s all about the authentic experience, with music straight from the village of Gornja Grabovica, so you get a joyous, passionate, boisterous, fiery and spirited performance. And while the band’s in Dorset, you can join Faith for a lively Balkan circle dance workshop at Blandford Corn Exchange.

You’ll learn basic steps of the Kolo, the 7/8 and other dances that would

Autumn Jewels sparkle

On October 2 an ‘Autumn Jewels’ concert took place at St John’s Church, Broadstone to cover a selection of repertoire studied by young musicians in the highly-successful Summer Music Camp in July, writes Rex Bale.

After the string ensemble warmed up Iris Hoyvag took centre stage with a harp solo. The Poulenc clarinet and piano sonata was then played by Oscar Brown. Brahms’ Rhapsody in G minor with Oscar Humbe-Davies (piano) was followed by Mozart’s bassoon concerto with Oskar Dudding.

Kreisler’s Minuetto was played by Freya Jedberg (violin). Benny Goodman’s Flying Home, from a five-clarinet group, ended the first half.

Joshua Paige’s violin and George Farrell’s trombone then had an airing, followed by Bach’s Partita in D minor played by Ariana Cossey.

Madeline Dring’s Blue Air played by Sancha Haley on piano was a delight and Monti’s ‘Czarda’ on Emily Clifford’s tuba brought a huge burst of applause. The concert ended with a polished performance of Corelli’s Op 6 No 2 with the string ensemble led by Lukas Svedberg.

Proceeds went to the Poole Society for Young Musicians charity and St John’s Church funds.

take place at traditional Balkan and Roma celebrations. The accompanying music and time signatures will also be demonstrated, and stories and traditions behind each dance explained, making it a real opportunity to learn more about Balkan and Serbian culture.

Eliza legs it for armed forces

After two years of setbacks due to the Pandemic, a determined runner has raised much-needed funds for a Dorset charity by completing a marathon - in Berlin.

On September 25, Eliza Brodie finally managed to run the Berlin Marathon in aid of the Dorset branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

She was among 45,000 runners who took the streets of the German capital, on a route that took in the old East and West Berlin with the finish line being the spectacular Brandenburg Gate. The run was Eliza’s 34th marathon, with her support team in Germany headed up by her godmother, Sally Cadec, who is vice-president of the Dorset branch of SSAFA.

Earlier in the year, Eliza also ran the North Dorset Villages Marathon and the Ham to Lyme 50km.

“I like running as it’s something I can do for myself and I like a challenge,” she said.

“I always have a feel-good factor at the end of a run as well.

“I’m dyspraxic, which means my coordination isn’t brilliant and I was never very good at team sport at school, so the fact that I do running now is great.

“I’m part of a local running club, so I

do most of my runs with them. I’ve met some really lovely friends through this group as well.”

And she said the charity was one close to her heart.

“Through my godmother I’ve learned how much good work this charity does for serving and ex-service personnel and their families,” she added.

“I am lucky enough to be fit and able to run. Many service personnel have been injured in the line of duty and can no longer do so. I am running to support them.”

So far, Eliza’s efforts have raised more than £1,000 for the charity, and people can still donate at justgiving.com/ fundraising/eliza-brodie4.

Meanwhile, SSAFA Dorset is urgently in need of a fundraising co-ordinator to help planning and running charitable events.

To volunteer, you do not need to have any military connection or knowledge, just community spirit and a desire to help people.

For more details, visit ssafa.org.uk/ volunteering.

High altitude training for club’s star Emily

Wimborne Athletic Club’s Emily Shaw is sharing her love and enthusiasm for running with children in Nepal whilst in her gap year.

The former English Schools 3000m Champion and England international cross-country runner is passing on much of the experience gained while training with Wimborne AC where she’s been a member since 2015.

The ex-Bryanston pupil is working with the charity Right4Children.

Eighteen year-old Emily is co-ordinating a project in six Nepalese schools under the banner ‘Right2Run’.

Emily says: “I believe that everyone should have the right to play sport –young and old, girls and boys.

“We see time and time again that sport has the power to break down socio-

economic barriers, cultural norms and inequalities, and the simplicity of running makes it accessible to all.”

Right2Run supports teachers and pupils and delivers weekly running sessions which cover skills, drills, games and the

highly-important nutrition.

Emily is using the knowledge gained as an athlete in Wimborne to coach in Nepal. She’s also drawing inspiration from female Nepalese international mountain runner Mira Rai who she has met with in Kathmandu.

Mira has launched and initiative to support five female athletes a year from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their skills as future trekking guides.

Emily is currently working hard to raise money for 150 pairs of training shoes, along with other sports kit, for the children she’s working with.

If you’d like to contribute details are ‘Children4ChildrenNepal’, bank sort code 40-52-40, account number 00022077.

Please state that your donation is for the Right2Run project.

Life’s a beach for volleyball battlers

A beach volleyball tournament staged by Poole-based MSP Capital has raised £5,000 for two hospice charities. Ten teams from the Dorset business community did battle on Bournemouth beach in the firm’s first-ever such event. At the end of a keenly-contested series held across two courts, the winners were

Bournemouth IT consultancy QuoStar. They saw off the challenge of six-a-side teams representing MSP Capital, NatWest, AFC Bournemouth, asset management firm Ridge, estate agents Frost & Co, lawyers Ellis Jones, accountants Saffery Champness, internet marketing specialists Uprated and office rental agency Venaspace.

Among the spectators cheering on their favourites were AFC Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore and ex-Cherries forward Steve Fletcher who also presented the winners’ trophy.

The £5,000 raised from the competition has been split evenly between charities Julia’s House and Lewis-Manning Hospice.

BLUE VIEW: Nicky and Sue, left, and the new gallery

Insurers have been charging loyal customers higher renewal prices even if there’s no change in their circumstances.

While some customers have seen higher prices every year simply for being loyal, new customers have benefitted from cheaper car insurance.

This is known as ‘pricewalking’, and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) put an end to it on January 1, 2022.

There’s plenty of false information circulating that claims the new regulation means cheaper renewal prices for everyone. But this isn’t necessarily going to be the case.

In fact, premiums increased by £25 at the end of 2021.

Here’s what you need to know about the pricing rule and how you can still save on your insurance premiums.

What do the changes to this insurance rule mean?

If you renew your insurance you won’t be charged more than a new customer with a like-forlike policy.

Let’s take an example with two customers. One is an existing customer who’s renewing and the other is a new customer.

Both of these have exactly the same circumstances.

Prior to the rule change, the new customer with the same circumstances might have got a cheaper premium.

Now, the existing customer that’s renewing can’t be charged any more than the new customer with the like-for-like policy.

What’s happening with car insurance prices in general?

A new car insurance policy could cost you £25 more now than three months ago, on average. This is the highest increase over a three-month period in over four years.

Even with the new regulation, if you’re renewing you could still see higher insurance prices.

Over the last three months, insurers have increased renewal prices by £45, on average.

Louise O’Shea, CEO at Confused.com says it’s highly likely insurance prices could

continue to rise throughout the year: “The changes coming into effect in January could trigger an increase in insurance costs, as companies are likely to look at how they price customers. The price rises could also be because people are driving regularly again, which means accidents are more likely. The cost of repairs, replacement and taking care of people involved in accidents is rising too.

All this contributes to how insurers calculate the cost of insurance. And these factors could mean that the price of

your premium could rise.

Does the new rule mean my car insurance price will be lower?

The rule change might make you think that your insurance price will be lower or at least stay the same. But unfortunately this isn’t likely to be the case.

If you’ve been loyal to your insurer for many years, you’re more likely to have experienced price walking. So you might see a drop in your insurance premiums when you renew.

But that’s not guaranteed. Particularly as so many factors affect the price of car
