Faiths ‘join pens’ to lobby Bojo Fundraising by Lorraine Gibson As Ukarine’s refugee crisis intensifies before our eyes, local religious leaders, including Rev Helen Bailey, far right, vicar of St John’s in Broadstone, multi-faith chaplains from the Bournemouth and Arts University and many other Dorset ministers are among more than 1,000 leaders who have written a timely letter to the Prime Minister urging him to reconsider the Nationality & Borders Bill. The leaders, representing the UK’s six major faith groups, said they are ‘horrified and appalled about the potential repercussions’ of the Bill and urge Boris Johnson to be ‘compassionate and ambitious’ about making urgent changes ‘even at this late stage’, including issues such as family reunion, routes for unaccompanied refugee children in Europe and resettlement.

quiz night at village pub

Deacon Nick Johnson, above, from St Mary’s RC Church in Poole, said: “I signed the letter because I believe our Christian faith is based on unamendable humanitarian principles, that is, a brother or sister in need should have their needs met as far as we are able.” Published on February 28, the day the Bill entered its final stages in the Lords, the letter states: “While there is still conflict and injustice in the world, there will always be desperate people needing sanctuary from war, persecution and suffering. We cannot close our door on

them, but this Bill does just that. Zara Mohammed, Secretary General of the Muslim Council in Britain, said: “There are many provisions in the Nationality & Borders Bill that are deeply concerning for faith communities.” Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, Senior Rabbi of Masorti Judaism, said: “Both my parents were welcomed here as refugees. Their experiences taught me to work with my community in supporting many people forced to flee their homelands in fear of their lives.”

A quiz night at the Red Lion Inn in Sturminster Marshall on Tuesday, March 15, will be supporting the Dorset charity Mosaic. All proceeds from the evening, which starts at 7.30pm and costs £10 including a basket meal, will go to the county-wide charity offering individual and family support for bereaved children and young people and those facing the death of a loved one. Mosaic also provides residential weekends, activity days and social events which help young people feel less isolated and alone. Bookings can be made on 01258 857319 or email info@redlionsturminster marshall.co.uk. The charity is also selling tickets for its spring draw which will take place on March 21.

Ferry good times were had by all

by Lorraine Gibson Look at these wonderful old photos of reader Steve Hodder’s which include his first and fourth birthday parties at Wick Ferry holiday camp. In the first, middle right, taken in 1950, Steve is the baby in the high chair, back right, being held up for the camera by his mum, Audrey. His dad, Fred Hodder, the popular landlord of the Kings Arms, Christchurch, from the 1960s to the 90s, is at the end of the table in the checked shirt next to the accordion player. “That was in the dining room at the holiday camp,” says Steve. “My dad was the manager at Wick and my mum used to run the restaurant, so I always had my birthday parties there as a boy.” The camp was eventually taken over by Pontins, but for Steve it holds many treasured family memories. “I was lucky to have these lovely parties. I was born in August you see, so it was usually sunny.” Which would explain why, in the second party photo in 1954, lower right, the celebrations have moved outside to a patio located where the Captain’s Club Hotel stands today. A dapper Steve, now four and resplendent in bow tie, is being played a tune, perhaps Happy Birthday, as his grandad gives him a hug. Aunts, uncles and cousins make up most of the other guests. Note the smart attire and the era’s must-have raffia

hats - not to mention that beautifully-laid table with fresh flowers. In true Hi-De-Hi style, everyone mucked in to entertain the guests and

Fred, using his Navy days as inspiration for a host of activities, would stage Crossing the Line ceremonies and organize quoits competitions on the ‘deck’.

When the family moved to run the King Arms, Steve helped with chores and when he was older he helped behind the bar. “Me and mum were brought up as Mormons, so I was never tempted to have a tipple. When I went to work at sea, though, it was different story!” Steve followed in his dad’s footsteps however, his naval career ended when he was hit by a car while home on leave and lost both legs. It was hard, but he kept going. “I didn’t let it stop me. You have to just get on, so that’s what I did.” Steve, who now lives with in Moordown with his partner Eileen, hopes that some of our readers may recognise some of the people in the third photo, top, which is of Fred in his chef hat receiving a gold watch for 25 years of service at the King’s Arms as the hotel staff look on. STEPPING OUT: Wimborne Walkers ready to stroll... after two years

Wonderful walk well worth wait

by Lorraine Gibson After several frustrating covid-related delays, a group of 24 Wimborne walkers finally got the chance to explore some of the shadier aspects of local history on a fascinating tour led by Hattie Miles from Walkingtalks. Originally planned for spring 2020, the walk was unanimously deemed well worth the wait by the group which was made up of members of the East Dorset Heritage Trust. Hattie’s Darker Side Of The East Cliff

walk took the group from Bournemouth’s Hotel Miramar to visit various locations where they were regaled with tales about a historic murder, a First World War shipwreck, the death of a Canadian pilot, a ghost story and other shadowy stories. “I am delighted that we have, at last, managed to do this walk,” said Hattie. “It was a lovely group of people who enjoyed the experience and have already asked to do another walk at a later date.” For more information visit walkingtalks. wordpress.com.

Dorset Police Chief Constable Scott Chilton has launched a new plan which aims to make the county ‘the safest in the country’. Mr Chilton said he would put more police on the streets and make his force ‘more visible and proactive’. “I am investing in county lines enforcement teams and neighbourhood enforcement teams to pursue those bringing drugs into our county through proactive and targeted action,” he said.

£437 to Ukraine

There was a good turnout for a coffee, tea and home-made cakes Saturday morning at Colehill Methodist Church. Members had planned to raise money for church funds, but it was decided to donate the £437 raised to help Ukrainian humanitarian aid funds.

“The staff here are quite simply wonderful, they can’t do enough for you. The food is excellent with plenty of variety and my quality of life has improved since moving here. I only wish I made the decision sooner.” Current resident

Two arrested on suspicion of metal theft

Dorset Police have arrested two men on suspicion of the theft of a skip containing metals, after they reportedly attempted to make off from a vehicle in the Ferndown area. Officers received information as they were working on a week-long crackdown on catalytic converter thefts across the county. Along with the arrests, officers also identified a number of unrelated traffic offences. Catalytic converters are stolen for the precious metals they contain. Neighbourhood Inspector Adrian Thompson, of Bournemouth police, said: “There are locks or guards available from dealerships to protect catalytic converters and simple steps like parking close to a wall or fence and in a well-lit, overlooked area can also help.”

Legacy of Serles House explained

The Priest’s House Museum, trading as the Museum of East Dorset would like to clarify the current position in relation to Serles House and the legacy of the well-known local Wimborne character, Ian Willis, who passed away in 2020. Ian bequeathed the residue of his estate, including Serles House, to the Priest’s House Museum Collections Trust. The collections trust is a charity operating separately from the main board of the museum. Part of its remit is to add to or rationalise the existing collection, and to ensure that the collection is appropriately managed. The Priest’s House Museum Collections Trust commissioned a feasibility study to examine options regarding the future use of Serles House. The study concluded that it would not be viable for it to become part of the museum offering. So the decision has been made, to dispose of the asset.

The proceeds from the sale will be used to ensure the museum’s collection will benefit in the longer term. Chairman of the collections trust, Sue Revill, said: “It was important for us to have the study to determine the most suitable course of action, and to ensure Ian’s legacy contributed positively to the future of the museum and its collections.’ The collections trustees have appointed a film maker to document the story of Ian and his home. This will involve interviews with people who had a connection with Ian and the house and will create a lasting record of this interesting and unusual feature in the, sometimes complicated, fabric of the town of Wimborne. Extracts from the feasibility study will be available to view on the museum’s website at museumofeastdorset.co.uk. Sue Cook Vice-chairman Priest’s House Museum

County’s new cycleway is not controversial Was there really any need to use the word ‘controversial’ in your text under the heading about this route? Just one way to wind up the cycle-hating motorists. We do not need this type of reporting. The councils are doing what the Government has asked them to do.

Please read the government document ‘Gear Change’. Please also inform your correspondent that the cycle routes are being funded by the Government and repairs to pavements by Dorset Council. Judy Windwood East Dorset Coordinator Dorset Cyclists Network

Cycling or walking can avoid need for short car trips You have an interesting article about carbon confusion where you are bringing to the reader’s attention some of the important issues on these problems - but in another article entitled pump politics you miss out one very important point.

A trip of 10 minutes in a car can easily be made using other, much greener, ways which do not damage the planet or the car. I, of course, am referring to walking or cycling. I realise that the article is focused on

car use, but I feel that this should have been mentioned too, as without constant reinforcing about the state of the planet lethargy, apathy and ignorance will continue to rule. Paul Windwood Wimborne

Reason for the shortfall In MP Christopher Chope’s article ‘NHS needs more private sector resources’, he proposes a system of CoPayment; ie the user has to pay part of the bill. This presumably means that if you cannot pay your share of the bill you will not get the treatment you need so those without the necessary funds will remain untreated while those with the money will be OK. Is this what the Conservatives mean by ‘levelling up’? He is right that the NHS needs more money - could this be the result of massive underfunding by the Government over the last 12 years? Wagtails swimming on in hope by Lorraine Gibson Readers may recall our story about the devastating impact that Dorset council’s threat to pull funding for Wimborne’s Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre would have on Wimborne Wagtails swimming club for disabled people. Wagtails’ Julian Vernon, whose son is a club member, urged folk to object via a consultation, however, despite their best efforts, the council’s Place & Resources Scrutiny Committee were asked to approve a recommendation that the subsidising public use of the centre should end in two years’ time. The consultation pointedly asked whether the council’s contribution was value for money since there were other leisure facilities within a 20-minute drive. According to David Allen

at Wagtails, this question doesn’t fully consider the challenges his club members face. “We have such a range of disabilities and need very specific facilities,” he says. “Having been in a wheelchair for months myself, I’m very aware of the challenges our members face. “We’re worried. Our group is the most vulnerable in

our society and it’s not just the physical wellbeing, the socialising’s so important, too and for many of them, driving or travelling any distance, is not an option.” David says the group is ‘plugging away’ and hoping that the centre will be taken over - with a special place reserved for the wonderful Wimborne Wagtails. Celebrating 50 Years as an Independent Furniture Retailer David ventured into the furniture world after leaving school in 1965 joining JJ Allens in their furniture department as a trainee where he gained invaluable experience of the furniture trade. In 1972 David & Annie established their family business and opened their first shop in Parley Cross Ferndown selling second hand furniture. In 1977 they opened a second showroom in Glenmoor Road, selling beds and bedroom furniture. As the company grew another showroom followed in Ham Lane Longham in 1982 selling lounge and dining room furniture. In 1992 they converted the ‘Welcome Lodge Motel’ on Ringwood Road into one showroom incorporating both furniture and bedroom departments.

Since then, the business has grown into one of the most prestigious independent furniture retailers on the South Coast. They could not have envisaged that, now 50 years on, the company would grow to such an extent, still remaining a family business with their daughters Susie & Sarah joining the company in 1997 and 1998. Throughout the 50 years they managed to maintain traditional values with very high standards of customer service along with an enviable reputation for exceptional quality and choice of stunning furniture ranges throughout the departments. Rain doesn’t stop play on pancake day For only the third time since it was revived in 1998 the Wimborne Minster Pancake Race had to take place inside the Minster on Shrove Tuesday due to the prevailing weather conditions. Three local schools participated Wimborne First, Dumpton and Allenbourn Middle. Five toddlers took part in the Toddlers Race, followed by four wheelchair entries from Streets Meadow who were pushed up and down the centre of the nave on a timed basis. In the adult races10 runners were timed individually round the inside of the Minster. Winner was Scott Taylor with a time of 12.50 seconds, Nick Rawling was

MPs’ round-up

How could we allow invasion of Ukraine? How did we allow the sovereign democracy of Ukraine to be invaded by the forces of evil? It makes me ashamed to say that what has happened in Ukraine is the direct consequence of continuous appeasement going back at least to 2008. As a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (COE) I have witnessed the apologist approach of so many fellow Parliamentarians from its 47 member countries to Putin’s actions in Russia. The Council of Europe was set up in the aftermath of the Second World War to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe. It expanded its membership to 47 countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the democratisation of Eastern Europe. Its members comprise every country on the continent of

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE Europe except Belarus. It is a matter of grave regret that Russia and its Parliamentary delegation were not expelled from the Organisation long ago. In 2008 the Russians invaded Georgia and annexed South Ossetia and Abkhasia. In 2014 Russia invaded part of Ukraine and annexed the Crimea. Despite the best lobbying efforts of the UK COE delegation these acts

of war were tolerated, if not condoned. Indeed, after 2014 the Germans went full steam ahead increasing their dependence upon Russian oil and gas by agreeing to the construction of Nordstream 2. Successive presidential and general elections in Russia were fraudulent and undemocratic. As well as denying any involvement in the Salisbury poisonings Russia has consistently refused to comply with the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights. Despite condemnation and collective outrage at proven extraterritorial assassinations of Putin’s opponents, including in the UK, Russia’s status in the Parliamentary Assembly was unaltered. As we wake up to the lethal consequences for Ukrainians of such appeasement, let us hope lessons are learned. Western democracies need to

work out a means of defending their core values when they come under sustained assault. If Nato is only willing to protect its own members under Article 5, what can be done to protect those former countries from the USSR which, like Ukraine, remain unprotected by the Nato umbrella? I have made several Parliamentary visits to Ukraine including the monitoring of elections and addressing a meeting in the Ukrainian Parliament, on Parliamentary procedure. What these visits made clear was how long and hard the process can be to develop democratic institutions free from corruption. The growing flame of freedom among the people of Ukraine proved unacceptable to Putin. As we look at the threats facing Hong Kong and Taiwan we must ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes with China as we have with Russia.

stouravonmagazine.co.uk End of life charity Marie Curie is urgently calling for volunteers in Dorset to give just two hours of their time to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pins in return for donations. Volunteers will be supporting the charity’s annual flagship fundraiser – the Great Daffodil Appeal – which was forced to cancel its public collections for the past two years due to the Pandemic. Last year, Marie Curie provided direct support to more than 69,000 people more than ever before. The charity is dependent on public donations so that its nurses can continue working on the frontline caring for people at the end of life in their own homes. Donations also support its information and support line, which provides a listening ear to anyone dealing with any aspect of death, dying and bereavement. Richard Ayres, leader of the Poole fundraising group, said: “We’re so excited that this year we’ll be dusting off our big yellow hats and getting back out there again. “We can’t do this alone, though. We need volunteers to donate their time so that we can continue to work across Dorset. “Volunteering at a collection is not only a great way to support Marie Curie but also a chance to meet new people in your local community. “Our team will support you

Lent is back, and began on Ash Wednesday, writes Rob Pearce. And Christian Aid Lunches are back too on Wednesdays, March 16, 23, 30 and April 6. All will be held at Wimborne Methodist Church between 12.15pm and 1.15pm. Come and enjoy a simple lunch – bread, cheese, fruit, tea/coffee, enjoy the company of others, listen to an inspiring five-minute talk at 12.45pm, take advantage of the opportunity to donate to Christian Aid’s work in support of vulnerable communities across the globe. The lunches take place in the same venue each week, but are hosted on successive Wednesdays by congregations in the area – Wimborne Methodist, St Catherine’s, Canford, Minster, St Michael’s and St John’s. During Lent many people choose to simplify their lives, especially food and drink. Christian Aid supports vulnerable communities affected by the ravages of war, disaster, Covid, climate change, oppression, regardless of faith, enabling them to improve food, water, and safety and providing hope and resilience. We look forward to welcoming you.

Sparkling skies showing signs of spring Night sky events with Bob Mizon MBE of the Wessex Astonomical

As winter begins to ebb and we see signs of spring such as daffodils and warmer temperatures, the sky is adorned with many a sparkling constellation. The big box-shaped grouping of Gemini the Heavenly Twins is in the south in the late evening, and the two bright stars at

its western (left-hand) end are Castor and Pollux, in legend twin sons of Jupiter

and Leda, Queen of Sparta. The constellation is known to astronomers as the

discovery site of the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, and for its magnificent star cluster M35, situated near Castor’s left foot. Any small telescope or good-sized binocular will show the cluster as a mass of tiny points of light arranged in curves, once described by the American astronomer Jeff Kanipe as looking ‘like a tangle of Christmas lights thrown on the floor’.

to grab a quick picture of their progress. They will document the journey on social media as they go, ending their epic adventure at 11am Saturday, April 23, prior to the match against Fulham FC. Portfield school teaching assistant, Alistar Reed said: “We all love football. We love watching matches, going to home games and travelling to games. The staff room conversations are usually about football so when this idea was suggested, we thought why not?! “People will be able to follow us on Facebook and we aim to ‘report live’ from each stadium. Everything is sorted, transport, the route to follow and a schedule to keep to, along with the drive and energy to raise both awareness of Autism Unlimited and money for the charity to help continue its amazing work.”

The team hopes to attract both individual and corporate sponsorship through their efforts and has set and ambitious target of £92,000. Assistant head teacher Nicky Edwards said: “It will be great fun. But what matters the most is improving awareness and raising money, allowing Autism Unlimited to invest in the best services. Suin Cranny, Ceo of Autism unlimited said: “I am so proud of these guys taking on this amazing challenge. They all make a huge difference to young lives, and are now making a difference in the Autism Unlimited community.” The team can be supported at justgiving. com/campain/ all92in92challenge Any companies wishing to support the team and have their logos featured on the team’s social media should email Fundraising@autismunlimited.org.

Rod makes shirt work of weight loss ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Rod Adams was so impressed with his sister and mother-inlaw’s weight loss he decided to contact Nicki Edwards, ‘The Cambridge Lady’ - the award winning consultant for The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan - based in Spetisbury near Blandford Forum. “They had both done so well and recommended Nicki to me,” says Rod, “but to be honest I wasn’t sure it was for me. “I have always been such a lover of rich food and beer!” But once Nicki explained the plan to me and the different steps available to suit my lifestyle, I realised I had nothing to lose except some much-needed pounds!”. Rod decided to give it a shot and found that he actually enjoyed the meal replacement products and as he progressed through the diet he was able to introduce more healthy food into his diet. The result? In under six months

Rod has lost nearly five stones. “I can honestly say I feel much healthier than I ever have and now both enjoy and appreciate the healthy food I eat. “I couldn’t believe it when both my wife Mary and I could fit into one of my old work shirts!” Does Rod offer any advice? “Just go for it! I have also learned from Nicki that the best advice is ‘water, water, water’ and stay strong because the end results are well worth it. “Thank you Nicki for helping to improve my life”.

Collections span north-south divide

Two collections from opposing ends of the country are being sold by Charterhouse in specialist April auctions. Richard Bromell of Charterhouse siad: “As a business we travel up and down the country advising clients on their specialist antiques and collector’s items. “Sometimes it can be as small as a piece of jewellery or large as a classic car, but whatever the items are they will be entered into a specialist sale to achieve the best possible price.” From a collector in Derbyshire a collection of more than 50 pictures by modern artists have been entered into the Charterhouse special sale of pictures and prints.

Amassed over the past 20 years they include works by modern artists including John Bratby, Dora Holtzhandler and Oscar Mellor. Varying in size, composition

and medium, the pictures are each estimated from £100 to £1,000 and expected to total £30,000-40,000 when they go under the auctioneers gavel on Thursday, April 7.

Whilst carrying out a probate valuation in a flat for a deceased estate in Devon, Charterhouse discovered a large collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain.

Health & Wellbeing When was the last time you took some time out for yourself? I mean really took time for you, to do something you enjoy, to relax, switch off, treat yourself? We’re always so busy running around after other people – kids, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, friends. In the hustle and bustle, juggling life, work and family, we often neglect ourselves. Certainly, in the last two years, self-care has become more of a priority for people. Realising that self-care isn’t selfish and is actually needed to help us beat burn-out and enable us to do everything we want and need to do has to be a good gear-change in our psyche. What can you do for selfcare? It doesn’t have to take too long or be expensive. Just going for a walk can lift spirts very quickly or why not indulge with a walk in the forest - I love wandering through the woods and taking in nature. If getting out of the house is tricky, run yourself a long bath, turn your phone off, light some candles and

relax back into a warm and welcoming cocoon. Many of us find it hard to switch off – but a ‘busy brain’ can be calmed with simple meditation techniques – again easily done at home. There’s also a real resurgence in pampering days – for men, women, even whole families. There’s something special about being away from ‘normal’ routine and enjoying time out for your body and

brain. With this in mind, this month I’ve launched a brand-new treatment combination for the ultimate time out and selfcare. It includes my Signature Treatment of a 75-minute massage with body brushing and Thai foot cleanse combined with a Therapeutic Facial. This ultimate pamper allows you to really relax, switch off and recoup. With Mother’s Day around the

corner, it also makes an excellent gift for a loved one. The whole treatment will leave your body relaxed, replenished and refreshed ready to get back to life. And remember, massage is not only great for relaxation. It reduces stress and can improve sleep patterns. It’s also a painkiller – reducing muscle pain and soreness as well as an important tool in aiding post-surgery and post-injury recovery. Hard to believe too – but while you’re resting and relaxing, a massage is actually helping increase flexibility and improve range of movement to your body. Now, that’s got to be worth taking time out for!

Edmondsham Edmondsham a little village about a mile south of Cranborne. The parish is fairly small with not many paths so this exploration of a little over five miles is mainly on Tarmac but with some ventures into the countryside. Park in the street near the village pump, which was the village water supply until they got piped water in their houses in the 1950s. Walk westwards, pausing to peer at Edmondsham House, which goes back to Tudor times. Then visit the church, parts of which are even older. Then walk back along the road, south eastwards for a mile or so until you

come to a junction. Here you turn left, north, to Gotham (not Gotham City!) where there is a Heavy Horse Centre. Follow the road right around the bend, eastwards, until the next bend to the north. Here you might like to leave the road and continue eastwards along a bridleway for a while to explore Telegraph Plantation and Pistle Down.

Then return to the road and head north for a furlong to join the footpath leading through the Heavy Horse Centre. The path soon turns left and heads north west across fields to join a byway close to the parish boundary. Head south along the byway, which may have awkward puddles after rain, until you get back to Gotham. Retrace your steps back along the road until you get to Smallbridge Farm, opposite which is a permissive path which takes you northwards up into woods. At a junction at the hilltop, turn left, westwards, for a quarter of a mile where you’ll meet a bridleway that takes you south westwards back to your car.

How to ask yourself the right questions

By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com

If it was easy to listen to our logical minds life would be so much easier, wouldn’t it? And yet sometimes we find ourselves having irrational or obsessional thoughts, ruminating over things that may or may not happen and getting ourselves into a thoroughly anxious state. You might know you’re being irrational, but you can’t seem to keep the crazy thoughts at bay. And you begin to ask yourself: ‘Why am I feeling like this? What’s wrong with me?’ And that just seems to make everything even worse! You become stuck in what’s

known as a negative psychodynamic loop. Anxiety is simply the condition of rehearsing our next problem. We become like actors rehearing their lines for a play - and the more we rehearse, the better we get at it. We not only get better at rehearsing our next problem - we get better at creating

our next problem! So we need to rehearse the outcomes that we actually want. To do this we can begin by asking ourselves the right sort of empowering questions, and engaging the imagination in the right way. When we begin to question things in a productive rather than destructive way our unconscious mind starts to work for us instead of against us. ‘Why’ questions keep us stuck - they make us focus on our problem: Why me? Why am I so useless? Why can’t I stop thinking like this? Our brain will generate an answer in response, but it’s unlikely to be a helpful one. It will only reinforce what we are already telling ourself. Instead try asking the

There are always many possible future versions of ourselves. Change isn’t just something that happens to us; each day our actions and behaviours will influence our future. People often ask me how they can stay motivated with their fitness. What’s the secret? Motivation can be great to get us started with something, but to keep it going you need something more solid. This is my approach; I have a clear vision of how I want to live my life, what I enjoy doing and what I hold dear. To accomplish this involves looking after myself and this is also linked to me looking after other people. If I’m fit and well, I’m able to care for others better; my family, my clients, my friends. This is important as it moves the focus from just being about me, to

being about others and about what I care for. Of course it isn’t always as perfect as it sounds, but it makes me much more productive than if I was drifting along with no idea where I wanted to go. Motivation comes and goes, but rather than worrying about that, I just focus on the little things that have to get done in the meantime to reach my goals, my vision for myself. This boils down to actions and behaviours which then have a higher purpose and meaning than if I was just doing random stuff. My actions are broken down into daily and weekly habits and activities; small steps keep me progressing and focusing on what makes me happy. Those of you that know me will recognise I do get distracted and veer off sometimes. An important

point here is to make it easy for yourself to get back on track. One of my actions is I do 10 push ups a day as I want to build upper body strength. If I miss a day I just go back to doing 10 a day. I don’t try to do 20. If I skipped a week (which I did recently) or two weeks; I don’t tell myself the threshold for getting back on track is doing 70 or 140. Why? Because that would mean I’d most likely never restart. Goals may be ambitious, but actions must be, well actionable! Finally, I make myself accountable. Often plans get side tracked or derailed. That is to be expected. My bigger vision inspires me but it’s the small steps that easily get me back on track without having to turn my life upside down to make progress.

Change doesn’t just happen

following type of questions: ‘What if’ questions actively cause your unconscious to consider other outcomes and possibilities. What if I am OK? What if I can do this? What if it all works out just fine? ‘How’ questions cause our unconscious to start thinking about how we can achieve these outcomes. They move us from problem state to solution state. How can I feel calmer? How can I get better at this? How much fun can I have doing this? Our brains are designed to answer questions and solve problems, so make sure you are asking yourself the right ones, and repeating them frequently. Then you’ll open up a whole new sense of freedom and empowerment over your thoughts.

Community meditation centre opens Lunchbreak meditation and the healing art of reiki are just two of the therapies on offer at a new community ‘pay what you can’ wellness project which has opened in Wimborne. Circle Meditation Centre, a community-focused enterprise designed to bring together alternative health practitioners with the people who need them the most, is the vision of social entrepreneur Samantha Bird. “I want to provide a space that allows practitioners to practice and the community to access help, with both parties operating on a ‘pay what you can’ transactional understanding, removing the block of money from the equation,” she said. “This fulfils two functions - it makes help accessible and affordable to everyone, and allows practitioners to build their client base and their reputation.” Circle, in Quarterjack Mews, will be providing an array of meditation sessions each day, including a

‘lunchbreak’ meditation which will give local people the chance to step away from their busy lives for a 15-minute oasis of calm, said Samantha, who is a meditation teacher, life coach and herbalist The timetable also includes reiki and meditation for mums with Nina Dixon of Mother Nurture UK, and Kundalini yoga workshops led by Leah Morgan of StillWeRiseCoaching. “My aim is to grow as a community

of healers and to support each other to bring health and healing to as many people as we can,” said Samantha. “I’d like Circle to become a living directory of people whose lives are focused on helping others, so no matter who is looking for advice, they will be able to find the right person among us to help them.” A timetable of events and sessions can be found at: circlemeditationcentre. co.uk.

Be the change you wish to see I’ve never really aspired to sharing my opinions on what I think is good, bad or indifferent in the world, whether it’s politics, religion or the effect of climate change, etc. For I appreciate that we all have differing opinions, made up from our own individual experiences, beliefs and influences that surround us. And anyway, who am I to say that my opinion is better than anyone else’s? However, the world seems pretty crazy to me right now and I find myself compelled to write. I believe, as millions of individual little animals all living together on this planet, we are also all trying to survive in our own little mini-worlds, in our own minds. As individuals we go into battle daily with ourselves, with others, trying

to keep a roof over our head, bringing up our children as best we can, caring for others, dealing with ill health, trauma, bereavement. All this, and more, can take a toll on our wellbeing. Life can be overwhelming. We may churn with a mix of emotions. We may feel scared, anxious, helpless, perhaps angry, or sad. What do we do with these feelings? Where do they go? When all around us is in disarray, and the world seems pure crazy, if you can, find yourself a tiny corner of calm just for you. Only you know what that calm looks like. Only you know what you need. Maybe go sit and stare at the majestic sea. Go trudge through the mud and feel the wind on your cheeks. Immerse yourself in a book. Go pound the treadmill at the gym.

Wrap yourself in a blanket and feel warm and cosseted. Find that thing that is just for you, so that you can just be. If you cannot find a piece of calm to be immersed in, then maybe look to what supports you. Where do you get your comfort? Who do you feel safe around? Who can you talk to and be yourself with? For me, my dog is a constant source of comfort and support. She follows me wherever I go, pushing herself against me when I sit, she can sense when I am sad and nuzzles in to soothe me. Whatever your support is, use it, lean into it, let it love you. Be okay with feeling what you feel. I would encourage you to allow your feelings to wash through you so that your mind, body and soul can process them. Sit with your feelings and see what they say

There’s no fudging with this delish dish! by Lorraine Gibson Irish cream fudge Preparation time: 20 minutes + cooling + chilling Cooking time: 25 minutes Makes about 30 pieces This fudge would make a lovely gift. Wrap it in parchment and arrange in pretty boxes, or simply use a little cellophane and ribbon. Ingredients 397g can condensed milk 150ml whole milk 425g light brown soft sugar 115g unsalted butter 100ml Baileys The Original Irish Cream Large pinch of salt 100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), chopped Method 1 Line a 20cm x 20cm baking tin with parchment. Put the milks, sugar and butter in a large, non-stick saucepan and warm over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has

dissolved. Put a sugar thermometer in the pan and turn up the heat a little, bringing the mixture to a moderate

bubble. Stir continuously until the thermometer reaches 113-115C or ‘softball stage’ (this should take about 15 minutes). Take the pan off the heat and set aside for 5 minutes. 2 Stir the Irish Cream and salt into the mixture. Using electric beaters set to a medium speed, beat for about 10 minutes until you have a thick mixture that’s starting to come away from the sides of the pan. (You can also do this with a wooden spoon, beating for about 15 minutes.) Tip the mixture into the lined tin, spreading it out evenly. Cool to room temperature, then cover and chill for an hour. 3 Melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water, stirring until smooth. Meanwhile, put a large sheet of baking parchment on the work surface. Turn out the fudge and trim the edges to neaten, then cut into squares about 3cm x 3cm. Dip half of each square of fudge in the chocolate. Leave to set on the parchment, chilling again briefly if needed. Recipe and picture courtesy of waitrose. com/recipes.

Friday Fish Pie When I was a child, we always had fish on Fridays. Mum said it was because she had gone to a Catholic school and they always had fish on Fridays. In the school holidays, we used to go down to the fishmongers that was on one side of the East Street bridge. It has since become a hat shop and various other things. Mum always used to ask for tail end pieces of cod, I think because they tended not to have any bones in them. To this date, I still don’t like bony fish. We used to have them fried and served with baked beans and a slice of bread and butter. When I told my husband he was horrified that I used to mix the fish and baked beans together!! This is the man who likes fish finger sandwiches!! So, I devised a fish pie that combined elements of the food that I like. (I couldn’t quite manage to get Yorkshire puddings in!!) Tail ends of white fish, cheese sauce and mashed potato!! The salmon trimmings are added to give it a bit of flavour. One of the reasons I like this recipe is that it is quick to do, (I am a lazy cook) and can be made in the time it takes to do the mashed potato. You could leave the fish frozen and then just add the salmon on top, my sister says that works but I have never tried it. It can be made in advance,

made, cooked and then can be frozen. It is really a very versatile, comfort food, to be served on winter nights, when it’s a bit cold and rainy. If you make it in advance, then you can just pop it in the oven for half an hour or so when you get in the door. It gives you time to have a shower and pour a glass of wine!! (I think I am giving myself away!) Ingredients: 2 / 3 white fish fillets – cooked Packet smoked salmon trimmings Cheese sauce – milk, cornflour, cheese Mashed Potatoes – enough to cover the pie Method Pre heat oven to 190C Once the white fish is

cooked, flake into a dish and add the salmon trimmings. Mix together Make a cheese sauce by heating up the milk and then add a cornflour roux, once thickened, to your taste, and

then add as much cheese to taste. Pour the sauce over the fish mix. Make mashed potato as you normally do and then spread over the top of the pie. Cook until the top browns.

Hannah’s Horticulture... with Hannah Hobbs-Chell Welcome to the monthly Q&A session! We have a few questions from readers that you wanted answering, so here goes: We are over run with ivy. How can I get rid of it? Ivy has a bad reputation, sometimes for good reason as it’s a very ‘successful’ plant! It has long been claimed that ivy kills trees, but in fact that statement is much disputed. In a healthy tree, the canopy blocks out the light enough to limit the growth of the ivy, and both co-exist without issue. It is also one of the best plants and habitats for wildlife because of its evergreen cover and nesting facilities, the number of critters that live in it providing food and a whole healthy ecosystem of its own, the berries are great food for birds, and the nectar is a rich early source of food for bees and pollinators. However, the problem comes when there is wind, and boy have we had some wind recently! As you can imagine, the ivy acts as a sail – not necessarily just in trees – and weak trees, plants and structures will cope poorly with the extra weight and force exerted. Ivy can be controlled by regular pruning, and in places where it’s out of control cut the stems just above the base. Cut a portion of the stems out, about an inch, to leave a gap. If you

don’t do this the ivy can heal the cut and keep its nutrients and water supply to the tops. Dig out the roots as and when you can. Is there a cheaper alternative to red cedar panelling that gives the same look? As you are probably aware, the cost of wood has shot up. Cedar is pricier for a few reasons. Although the trees can grow relatively rapidly, the trees require specialist and labour intensive maintenance. Cedar wood is predominately found in the USA and Canada, which over the last few years have been hit badly with devastating forest fires, all but destroying a lot of the crop. Demand is also up, which make the price rise. That being said, cedar is a great and long lasting wood, so an initial investment pays dividends as you won’t likely need to

replace it anywhere near as often. Cedar has many other advantages too: Durability: Unlike chemically treated lumbers/plywoods, cedar has a natural ability to resist water and humidity defects over time. With a coat of oil, polish, stain over the surface you can make it even more resistant to water. It’s not easily warped or cracked, and is strong and lightweight. Insect-proof: Not every wood has this anti-insect power that you will be getting with cedar wood. Natural antibacterial and antifungal: it resists pest and diseases Alternatives to cedar are pine, GUTTERS CLEARED Windows fascias, soffits, gutters cleaned. Repairs Free estimates 07788 376752

What is the best way to get grass to grow? To establish a new lawn, start with the soil: ensure it is well raked and fine with most stones removed, level, and moist but not wet. Then choose your seed depending on your situation, shady lawns, general purpose etc. Grass seed is usually made up of four or more varieties, and these different varieties have different advantages and are more suited to different situations, the combination and percentage makes the seed mix for different situations. Sow grass seed liberally at the rate suggested, never less, for a thick sward, put a board/plank over the seed and tread down lightly. Keep well watered until it’s established – this is the main cause of failure. Also consider netting areas to keep birds from eating the seed! Hold off mowing until the grass is at least 2 inches high, and mow on a high setting for the first cut, and then treat as normal lawn. Please do email me with your questions and queries , you can ask me about things such as design, pests and diseases, plant choice, plant and garden maintenance, trees, etc. Have a great couple of weeks!

Buddha in the bathroom...

I have never been to the far East. A fear of large spiders and ‘deli beli’ drove me in tamer directions. Passing people’s houses in deepest Dorset and seeing a many-armed goddess statue in the drive it seemed incongrous and pretentious. A bit of self reflection later and I can see I was envious, but the jealousy melts away as I learn more about the Eastern religions. Judgemental?– yes I had been... presuming all the elephant-headed statuary were just souvenirs proudly proclaiming their owners are big travellers. I mean maybe a few are, but in general it’s an expression of an interest in far east religion and philosophy. Years ago I bought some buddha

cushions from The Range purely because I loved the pattern - now I am digging below the surface and love what I find. That elephant-headed god is

Never paint your exterior walls again! Imagine having your exterior walls and roof painted and never having to paint them again. That’s the promise from a westcountry company, Countrywide, which uses a German paint backed by the Energy Saving Trust. The properties of the paint they use, Properla, are quite incredible. Not only has it been tested to last more than 25 years, it also cuts moisture absorption, and even cuts your energy bills. Managing director Colin Butler has been in the business for 14 years. He said: “I was in insulation and went into exterior home insulation with this product. There are so many benefits to it – it is very good with solid stone homes, as they tend to constantly draw up moisture and have very low thermal qualities. “Properla chemically bonds to the brick which reduces the heat passing through the walls and has strong thermal energy qualities. The Energy Saving Trust advocate it and it conforms to British Standards, providing a fully breathable insulation barrier which reduces water absorption by 93%. It’s been tested for

durability, thermal insulating properties, breathability and water repellent qualities. “As you might expect it costs a bit more than other exterior wall treatments, but you don’t have to have it done again and that makes it very reasonable.” Countrywide is an approved installer for Properla, which comes in ten pastel shades. Countrywide offers a finance option on request and has fitters dotted around the westcountry. Colin added: “We have a lot of happy customers – check out our reviews. We’re on Checkatrade.” You can book a no obligation survey

using thermal imagery to highlight damp or cold spots. Colin said: “At Countrywide we pride ourselves on exceeding customers’ expectations. We offer high quality exterior wall and roof coatings that will make your home exterior look beautiful, protect your exterior walls and roof from the elements and also comes with a minimum of 10 years’ guarantee. “We are currently offering all New Blackmore Vale and New Stour & Avon readers a fantastic discount of 15% off exterior wall and roof coatings.” Book a free home survey and estimate at Countrywide-surveys.co.uk or call 0800 246 5145.

Fine flowers for February In February we held our annual general meeting which was well attended by our members, writes Catherine Jenkins. This was followed by a very interesting talk with slides by Dan Benson from Brothers Farm Flowers which is based at Stapehill. Run by Dan and his brother Josh they run it as well as the blueberry field and they grow the well-known British seasonal flowers which they pick daily. Anyone can call in to choose their flowers and enjoy a lovely cup of tea or coffee and delicious homemade cake made by the family. Not only do they sell to the public and florists but they also have a florist who will arrange funeral and wedding flowers. We all enjoyed our morning and we came away thinking in the summer months we would visit them for a coffee and to pick from the buckets. On March 16, the demonstration will be by the home team. Their title is Fun With Flowers. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10am at West Moors village hall and all members and visitors are most welcome. Farming & Environment

A day at the farm

with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. The extraordinary weather during February put me in mind of the old farmers’ proverb, ‘in like a lion, out like a lamb’, except the lion roared loudly and just carried on roaring. The lamb was nowhere to be seen. It will be interesting to see what March brings. As storms Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin raged, we held our breath expecting to hear news that the farm had been whisked away, Wizard of Oz style. To be fair, bits of it did disappear, the smoking shelter for example. The event was dubbed by Mark, the farm’s founder, as ‘a sign’; mother nature’s affirmation that smoking is bad for you. Whilst High Mead got away relatively lightly and with less damage than we’d anticipated, its closure on the Friday came hot on the heels of the weeklong Covid break closure. It impacted on our income, the

health and wellbeing of our Co-Farmers, and the natural rhythm of the farm. On their return, the CoFarmers set about the clean-up. Retrieving parts of the smoking shelter from next door’s field, removing the general detritus, and up-righting upset animal shelters. On the positive front, DP Marquees donated their old marquee flooring which is super-efficient at keeping the mud at bay on the farm. I love to see the many different ways the farm makes use of seemingly unwanted materials; it is particularly satisfying to know the matting has been saved from landfill. The fundraising team are busy filling in grant application forms for the year ahead. One such form, completed by shop volunteer Sue Sutton, was for the Wessex Water Dorset Community Awards, hosted by the Dorset Echo.

We were delighted to hear that we’d been shortlisted for both the categories Sue entered us for, and thanks you to, our farm supporters, we won not just one but both of them! While I was absolutely thrilled to win the Community Hero award, I did stress that I was simply collecting the award on behalf of all the real heroes at High Mead Farm; the staff and volunteers who turn out in all weathers and have done so for years. Awards like this are important because they create better awareness of organisations like the farm and the amazing service they

offer the community. I’d like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who voted for us and offer my congratulations to all my friends and colleagues at High Mead Farm; you are all amazing. Farm fact: The saying ‘in like a lion, out like a lamb’ most likely started as a reference to astronomy, referencing the position of the constellations Leo (a lion) and Aries (a ram, or lamb) in the night sky — it quickly evolved into a succinct summation of March’s changing weather as the seasons change from winter to spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Farm plans considered New proposals to change the use and layout of Wilksworth Farm Caravan Park in Colehill, are being considered by Dorset Council. Comments are open until March 24 on application P/ FUL/2022/01120 to replace 60 touring caravan pitches with 33 holiday lodges. Plans to station a total of 137 static caravans (including the 77 current pitches) and retention of the camping field were refused in July last year. A heritage statement accompanies the new proposal by Shorefield Holidays Limited to site the lodges to the south of the Grade II* listed Wilksworth Farmhouse and Grade II listed Granary. James Webb of Forum Heritage Services says the historic core of the former farm group has been identified as making a major contribution to the significance

of the listed farmhouse and granary and non-designated heritage assets, but they say the wider setting beyond the core, is now characteristic of an established camping and caravan park and contributes very little to the understanding of the farm group. The proposal includes changing the use of the plot to the south-east, siting holiday lodges on gravel pitches, and removing winter storage currently provided within the historic core for touring caravans where a gravelled area will be replaced with informal open green space. Mr Webb says the proposed scheme differs from previous schemes in acknowledging the need to link the open rural landscape to the south and the historic core of the farm group by keeping a section of the southern fields open and free of caravans or lodges.

Delight at return of Dorset Art Weeks

by Lorraine Gibson Art is back and celebrating the inspiration of our beautiful county. From individual studios to galleries, workshops to collectives, pop-ups to projects, the muchanticipated Dorset Art Weeks returns with more art forms than you could shake a paintbrush at. Sladers Yard, an evocative oil on linen by Alex Lowery, James Budden’s cool, convex-perspective self-portrait, Isla Chaney’s mystical Walled Garden, a stunning sculpture by Victoria Jardine and an ululating Galiani glass piece are only a few of the must-see works on show at a variety of county-wide locations. In a world of wall-to-wall mediocre paintings, the sheer variety of creativity jewellery, film, installation,

printmaking, textiles, woodwork - makes the DAW a major draw for culture vultures keen to dive deep into the artistic community and see artists’ ideas at source. Designed to celebrate the breadth and depth of the county’s artistic talent, not only does the event do that, but it pays homage to Dorset itself, with studios and exhibitions in unique locations and beautiful settings so visitors can discover what local creatives have been up to in what has been an extraordinary time, inspiration-wise. This year, more than 250 venues are taking part with more ways than ever to engage audiences, including open studios, public art trails and group shows in public spaces. An Art Weeks Directory will be available in libraries,

galleries, museums and other cultural centres across Wessex from early April, with regional maps and information for planning your visit. And with the Dorset Art Weeks app you can create a list of must-dos, curate bespoke art trails and check venue details. Because the artists rejoice in the distinctiveness of the places which inspire their

work, it represents a unique way to make the most of Dorset’s countryside and coast and to discover the unexpected. DAW signs will be popping up across the county soon and sponsor Hall & Woodhouse promises a warm welcome to arts fans at their locals. Dorset Art Weeks: May 14 to 29, 2022.

Date added after demand doubles by Lorraine Gibson Talk about leaving the audience begging for more. So high is demand for tickets for an upcoming burlesque show at the Tivoli that was featured in the New Stour & Avon magazine recently, a second date has been added and tickets are now on sale. Flagged up as a night of laughter, cabaret, mystery and glamour with a promise of scintillating entertainment, An Evening Of Burlesque is the UK’s longest-running show of its type. According to the Tivoli’s Pauline Roberts, what audiences seem to love is

the spectacle of it all. “It’s very lively and colourful,” she says, “a bit like the traditional old music hall shows.” Of course, there’s also the chance of a glimpse of a tad more flesh than usual and, interestingly, much of the audiences are made up of couples. Burlesque has teased audiences for centuries and this variety show with its super-glam stars is very much a 21st-century reboot. Expect the sequins and sass, with added glitter. Friday, May 13. Online tickets £27.50, box office £25.

The recent Jazz At The Allendale event, pictured, and organised by Wimborne Rotary saw a capacity audience turn up to enjoy a wide-ranging concert programme of music and vocals provided by the Swing Unlimited Big Band. There was no doubting the warm response of the audience, who generously contributed to a retiring collection which raised more than £1,400. After deduction

of expenses this will go to support Youth Music Wessex and Rotary charities. Rotarian Darryl Reach who has organised the concert for the past 10 years said after the event: “Once again the people of Wimborne have shown how much they appreciate this annual concert and over the years their donations have enabled us to support local charities to the tune of some £15,000. “Swing Unlimited Big

Band presented a selection of music ranging from traditional classics to a modern composition based on the theme tune to the TV series Frasier”, he added, “and without their commitment and professionalism we could not have attracted the large audience which we did.” Jazz at the Allendale will return next year and provisionally the date is Monday, February 13, 2023.

After an enforced absence of almost three years because of Covid 19, this previously biennial play is back for a five night run in April at St Peter’s Church in Poole. The play, Footsteps, is a new production written by local actor, director and playwright, Anne Ballaam.

It is set in the present day as a group of tourists in Jerusalem visit sights of Jesus’s last journey. The tourists, all with their own individual reasons for taking the tour, gradually become immersed in events as they took place more than two thousand years ago. As the play progresses we hear their stories and see them interact with the events of the last three days of Jesus’ life.

The Poole Passion, a registered charity, supports Mental Health and Routes to Roots in Poole. It is an all-inclusive theatre group welcoming those from all walks of life, faith and ability. A video montage of previous performances and a taster of the new

production are on YouTube ‘The Poole Passion Play’. Footsteps runs from Tuesday to Saturday April 5 to 9 at St Peter’s Church, Parkstone, BH14 0NN. ‘Curtain up’ at 7.00pm. Tickets are available online at poolepassion.com or by phone on 07719 173378 (before 9pm please).

Nigel follows Noel’s footsteps

by Faith Eckersall For the first-time ever, Nigel Havers is appearing in a Noel Coward play on stage, appropriately taking the part first played by Coward himself, in Private Lives. Havers, who is playing Elyot, will be joined by Olivier award-winning Patricia Hodge taking the part of Amanda in the Nigel Havers Theatre Company’s inaugural production of the Coward classic at Poole’s Lighthouse Theatre, from March 15-19. Coward’s comic masterpiece is described as both a ‘scintillatingly witty and scathingly vitriolic study of the rich and reckless in love’. Elyot and Amanda, who were once married, find themselves in adjoining rooms in the same hotel on the French coast, both on honeymoon with their new partners. Their initial horror quickly evaporates and soon they’re sharing cocktails and a romantic serenade. But there’s much more to Private Lives than pure comedy, which is why, almost a century on, it continues to delight.

According to Ms Hodge: “It’s endured because it is one of those plays that examine the human condition. “Unlike a play that makes some sort of sociological comment, and therefore can lose its relevance over time, Private Lives is about relationships and emotions; a couple who can’t live together and can’t live apart.” The duo are joined on stage by Dugald Bruce-Lockhart as Victor, Natalie Walter as Sibyl and Aïcha Kossoko as Louise. Timely musical of Soviet and American

by Lorraine Gibson With its two main protagonists, an American and a Soviet pitted against one another in a battle to prove who’s the most powerful, Chess the musical has never been more relatable. Written by Sir Tim Rice along with ABBA songwriters, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Chess is a complex but engrossing rock opera. And with mighty songs like One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well, it’s no great surprise that it attracts full houses and standing ovations the world over. Now it’s Christchurch’s turn as the award-winning Milton Musical Society returns to the Regent’s stage with their take on this anything-butblack-and white musical. In a politically-driven, Cold War-era chess tournament, two grandmasters of the game, one from the US and the other from the Soviet Union, clash, not over borders but over a woman who manages one, and loves

CZECH MATE: Rossano Sal and Alan Colclough in Chess

the other. The metaphor is unmistakable, the tale as old as time. From Merano to Bangkok, the players, politicians lovers, and spies manipulate and are manipulated to a pulsing rock score that also includes:

Heaven Help My Heart, Nobody’s Side, Someone Else’s Story and Anthem. The original One Night In Bangkok, performed by Murray Head with Anders Glenmark was a worldwide smash, reaching number three on the US Billboard

Hot 100 chart, while I Know Him So Well, by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson was number one in the UK charts throughout February 1985. Chess opened in London’s West End the following year and stayed for three! It enjoyed a West End revival in 2018 and has been popular all over Europe and even in Moscow! This is Milton Musical Society’s first production at the Regent Centre postpandemic. Its previous best-selling productions include: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, My Fair Lady and Oklahoma. It is directed by Jon Shiner, choreography is by Kirsti Warne and musical direction by Alastair Hume. Curtain up is from Wednesday to Saturday, April 27 to 30 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets: £18, concessions £17, from regentcentre.co.uk or the box office on 01202 499199.

‘Whirlwind’ first year for vet practice by Andrew Diprose A year ago vets Aidan and Natalie Borrill launched their new independent veterinary practice on the outskirts of Ferndown. It was a lifetime’s dream and the result of years of planning. But, like any new business, it was also a huge gamble. The couple, who met while doing their six-year veterinary training at the University of Cambridge, had invested £750,000 in the purchase, renovation and extension of Forge Cottage. Ferndown Family Vets officially opened for business on Monday, February 22, 2021. One year on, the practice has: 1,500 clients – the figure was expected by year four and not in its first 12 months Been awarded Gold status as a Cat Friendly Clinic by the International Society of Feline Medicine A 13-strong team including four vets Consistent five-star reviews – 68, alone, on Google Shortlisted for an IFSM award, recognising the special ways the practice has adapted the way it works to reduce

stress levels for cats Above all, Aidan says they’ve achieved their primary goal of creating a ‘Fear Free’ vet’s practice based on an ethos of keeping their patients, clients and staff happy. He said: “It’s been a whirlwind, a truly crazy year. “From the first day, when our internet was lost and we dealt with 90 phone calls. “We also had to lift all the specialist dog flooring in the consulting rooms and waiting area as it had been laid incorrectly. “But our clients were so understanding and patient. “In fact, the reaction has been quite overwhelming.

“We’ve been taken aback by the support. “We feel very proud at what we’ve achieved.” Ferndown Family Vets caters for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small family pets. The facilities include: Separate areas for dogs, cats and rabbits as well as a separate consultation room State of the art operating suite Dentistry unit Imaging room In-house laboratory Separate, and fully soundproofed, cattery and kennelling areas Ferndown Family Vets is Fear Free certified which means

everything possible has been done to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. The colour palette chosen for wall coverings and paints is an animal-friendly green, grey and blue and other measures include Floors For Paws, described as the world’s best flooring for dogs. There are also separate reception areas for dogs and cats. Aidan, 36, said:“We’re especially proud of our team, who have all received Fear Free training. “We’ve thrown everything at the clinical side. “We took on another nurse, Nikki, within a week of opening and added more to our team every month from June to September. “Our clients are predominately in the Ferndown area but also come from as far afield as Basingstoke and Winchester. “It’s all been by word of mouth. “Our family, including my parents Rob and Linda, and sister-in-law Cheryl Wesley have helped out in so many ways. We couldn’t be more grateful.” ferndownfamilyvets.co.uk.

Ukraine conflict sparks cyber-attack fears Businesses should be extra vigilant about their cybersecurity due to the ongoing situation with Russian and Ukraine, according to experts. C3IA Solutions, a leading cyber-security company headquartered in Poole, said cyber-attacks on companies are a real and growing threat. Those businesses that supply to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) or the Government are particularly at risk. Russia has been accused of orchestrating a number of cyber-attacks, including on the Ukrainian power grid and on their banks and official websites. Jim Hawkins, pictured, of C3IA Solutions, which was one of the first companies certified by the National Cyber Security Centre

(NCSC), said: “Cyberattacks do not respect international boundaries and the risk of overspill, intentional or not, is why the NCSC has said that the UK’s cyber risk has been heightened. “The NCSC and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) have warned organisations to review their cyber-security resilience. “Having Cyber Essentials certification is always something we’d recommend as a basic level of security. “But there are other things businesses can do to improve their business resilience. “All systems should be patched, especially those with vulnerabilities that are known to have been exploited, critical services

should be backed up and incident response plans tested for functionality. “Multi-factor authentication should be implemented, and we’d recommend that businesses follow the NCSC guidance on password management. “Educating staff about the risks and how to recognise them is also an important step. “How to identify suspect

emails and how social media and business networking platforms can be used by attackers are something that should be explained to staff. “Threats can range from DDoS attacks, which basically flood a system to slow it up and stop it working, to more sinister ones that can plant spyware and steal information. “In the event of an attack the NCSC wants businesses to report it to them so a picture can be created of threats.” Paul Chichester of NCSC said: “While we are unaware of any specific cyber threats to UK organisations in relation to events in Ukraine, we are monitoring the situation closely and it is vital that organisations follow the guidance to ensure they are resilient.”

Queen’s Award for the right image “You’ve achieved something that is pretty amazing.” The words of Angus Campbell, Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, as he officially presented imageHOLDERS with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade. The Ferndown-based company was one of just 205 businesses in the UK – and the only one in Dorset – to receive the coveted award and royal seal of approval in 2021. Addressing staff during a tour of imageHOLDERS’ premises on the Ferndown Industrial Estate, Mr Campbell said the business should be very proud of its achievement. He added: “These awards are much sought-after in the world of commerce and are recognised internationally as indicating excellence. “You’ve shown yourself to be one of the leaders in your field. “You are conquering the world and ahead of the game with your innovative approach. “You have been recognised across the country and the world and I congratulate you on your success.”

Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users imageHOLDERS makes interactive touch screens and computer kiosks. The company has a £5.6m annual turnover with around 70 per cent of sales going overseas. It employs 44 people in Dorset – up from 24 in 2020 – and also has offices in Vancouver, Canada, and Taiwan. Founder Adrian Thompson’s first taste of business was 30 years ago when he travelled down from his native NorthEast and set up a stall in London’s Camden Market selling candlesticks. He later went on to design

and develop gift and home products. imageHOLDERS was incorporated in 2002 but it was only in 2014 that the business began to take off following the increasing popularity of tablets, including Apple’s iPad. Now its range of iPad, tablet and computer kiosks and enclosures and mPOS (mobile point of sale) solutions are helping some of the world’s largest enterprises implement tablet technology in a number of environments. The company supports clients in a variety of industry sectors including hospitality, retail, leisure, automotive, casino, corporate and healthcare. Customers include Amazon, Bentley, Legoland, Hard Rock Café, Hilton, McDonald’s, Mercedes-Benz, Nasa and the NHS. Its latest innovation – unveiled last August in response to the global pandemic – is a gesture controlled touchless kiosk. Nine of the team at Ferndown work on design and innovation while eight are employed in sales. Adrian, who handed over the

CEO role to Dirk Hendrickx last November as part of the company’s growth plans, said the presentation of the Queen’s Award was a ‘wonderful day and a wonderful achievement’. He added: “It is a great honour to receive this, the most prestigious business award you can win in the UK. “It’s a proud moment and a testament to the whole team. “Dorset is an amazing place to live, and work, in the UK. “How lucky and fortunate we are.” The awards are given for outstanding achievement in: innovation, international trade, sustainable development, promoting opportunity (through social mobility). Winners are permitted to fly the Queen’s Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on their marketing materials. Winners are also given a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy. The awards are valid for five years. SERVING UP SUCCESS: Shop manager Laura Huxtable-White with assistant Daisy Wheeler at the deli counter

Deli good show at legendary restaurant

by Andrew Diprose A delicatessen launched in response to customer demand looks set to be another sure-fire success for one of Dorset’s best-known beachside restaurants. Queues had formed by the time the Noisy Lobster’s new Deli, Shop and Bakery officially opened for business on Mudeford’s Avon Beach. Around £50,000 has been invested in the venture which involved a total revamp of the previous beach shop. Cured seafood and the Noisy Lobster’s own sauces and condiments are now available to buy together with flavoured butters, fresh bread and other items made in the kitchens. A range of local brands are also stocked including Dorset Spice Shed, Dorset Sea Salt and Dorset Ginger. Monica Taylor, marketing manager, said customers dining in the restaurant had asked if they could buy their favourite sauces, flavoured butters and other products. She added: “The deli was totally customer-led. “We couldn’t be more excited to now offer many of the

things they love in the deli. “Stewart Parker, our head deli chef, does the most amazing job and is so talented. “There’s been so much anticipation about the opening of the deli along with our new-look shop and bakery. “It’s great to also showcase and support other local brands.” Five jobs have been created. Laura Huxtable-White is the shop manager, assisted by Daisy Wheeler and Sophie Wardle. A vacancy currently exists for a supervisor. All the bread, cakes and pastries are freshly made

every day in the onsite bakery with gluten-free and vegan products available. Daisy, who is assistant shop manager and, like Monica, first joined the Noisy Lobster as a waitress, said: “We’ve worked hard to make sure we’re as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. “There are no more plastic bags and we use recyclable packaging. “We’ve done so much and it feels very special. “There really is something for everyone here.” The shop also sells a full range of merchandise for the Noisy Lobster – from clothing to reusable coffee cups – sourced from

Christchurch-based Hotline. Monica said: “We have a huge following on social media and across the country. “The feedback we’ve already received is brilliant.” The Noisy Lobster includes the restaurant with around 200 covers – rated 4.5 out of 5 from 2,785 reviews on Tripadvisor – the Coffee Cabin, the Lobster Hatch and also beach huts. The Occasion Hut is available for birthdays, anniversaries, family get-togethers and special celebrations. Peter Hayward, 37, who acquired the business with his younger brother Stephen, 35, in 2012 said more than £3million had since been invested by their company, Avon Beach Ltd. It now employs more than 150 full and part-time staff at peak season with around 800 customers in the restaurant on a busy day and over 1,000 takeaways. Peter said: “We have a lot of very loyal customers and it was clear the deli was something they wanted. “We’re very pleased to see it open.”

Business PETITION: Tony Reeves

The New Stour & Avon It’s fortnightly and it’s FREE! Pick up your copy here... ALDERHOLT Wolvercroft Garden Centre Co-op Southern

Petition launched to ‘save’ crematorium A retired businessman has launched a petition urging BCP Council to install a cremator at Poole Crematorium. The local authority is spending £559,000 refurbishing the facility at Gravel Hill, but the refurbishments do not include a cremator. Bodies are currently shuttled across the conurbation to Bournemouth after the committal. Tony Reeves who lives in Broadstone, believes families want their loved ones cremated at the same place where the committal occurs. He said: “The crematorium’s cremators were decommissioned two years ago and despite the council having budgeted a vast amount of money for upgrading, the costs will not include a new cremator. “It is an upsetting situation for many families to see their loved ones being driven to Bournemouth, as they believe that the final journey should end at the crematorium where the service is held. “Bournemouth Crematorium is already the second busiest in the country and it seems incredulous that the council does not seem to be looking to the future. “Furthermore, Poole Crematorium covers a wide

area, across the Purbecks and as far west as Blandford and Dorchester. “The petition I have put my name to is urging the council to commit to installing cremators and I also urge everyone to put their signature to this petition.” Nick Douch, of Douch Family Funeral Directors, that has seven funeral branches in Dorset, said: “It really makes no sense to have a crematorium with no cremator. “The families we look after often become upset when we tell them that. “And as there seems to be plenty of money available for refurbishment it is peculiar that it is not being spent on a cremator.” Anthony O’Hara, of Nicholas O’Hara Funeral Directors, which has three branches in east Dorset, added: “Most of the families we look after consider Poole as their crematorium. “People like to think that the place where they have the cremation service is the final resting place of their loved ones. “It is disappointing and frustrating that there are no plans to install a new cremator.” Read more info and sign the petition here: savepoolecrem. org

The time is ripe to get the most out of this years tax allowances... ...We’re Here to Help It’s a good idea to put as much into your ISAs as you can afford. But do this before 5th April 2022, because you can’t carry this allowance over from year to year.

If your ISA investments are part of your longer-term financial planning, a Stocks and Shares ISA will make the most of the long-term tax benefits on offer.

Our advice is – use it or lose it!

To find out more, contact us today on:

• £620 billion is currently held in ISAs. * • Just over half (51%) held in Cash rather than a Stocks and Shares ISA. * • That’s over £315 billion of cash savings that isn’t working as hard as it could for you. *

The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Principal Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management The Partner Practice is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group’s website www.sjp.co.uk/products. Bowls club’s 60th anniversary offer Come and have a go at this target sport that can be played by (almost) anyone, with tactics similar to curling, (wasn’t it a great Olympic final?), writes ladies captain Sue Aplin. Get out in the fresh air and have some gentle exercise with friendly company. And if you are a competitive sort, we also play competitions and against other clubs in leagues with varying levels of expertise. Because we can play evenings and weekends, you don’t have to be retired to play. And we could especially do with more ladies as the annual Ladies v Men match is a hotly contested, even if a lighthearted competition. A great way of getting exercise without getting hot and sweaty. Come and have a go at one of our open days on Sunday, April 24, or Friday, April 29, pick a time between 10am and

963 400186

4pm. We will provide equipment and refreshments, all we ask is that you wear flat shoes. We also have an open day on Sunday, May 1 for younger people (from age seven) to have a go, between noon and 4pm. If you like it but are still not sure, we offer a further three ‘Try Bowls’ sessions for £15 then if you decide to join us, that is deducted from your membership. If you can’t make one of the open days, contact us to arrange to try bowls anyway with the same offer. We have one of the best bowls greens in

East Dorset, at King George V playing fields off Church Road, maintained for us by expert groundsmen so that, unlike some clubs, we do not have to maintain the green or clubhouse. We play seven days a week for six summer months, from early April to mid/late September - from 9.30am, (depending on the day to allow for green maintenance), and up to 8.45pm depending on the time of dusk - and if we can still see the ‘jack’. We also have various social events during the year. For more visit ferndownbowls.co.uk.

Motoring

Playing the ‘how far can I go before I have Playing the game of ‘How far can I go before I have to fill up my tank?’ has left many motorists stranded at the side of the road after a breakdown. Whether you’re in a hurry or worried about rising petrol prices, lots of us hold off refilling our tanks until the last possible moment. My fuel light has come on. What does it mean? When the fuel light comes on it means you’re starting to run low on fuel and should refuel your car soon. The ‘fuel low’ indicator is usually only triggered once your tank’s capacity is down to 10-15%, so you don’t need to panic - yet. Once the fuel light starts flashing that means the situation has become a bit more urgent and you should refuel as soon as possible.

When my fuel light comes on, how much petrol is left? A common belief is that a car can go for roughly 40-50 miles after the light goes on, but that can be tricky to track. How far you can actually drive once your fuel warning light comes on, frustratingly, varies from car to car. For many cars, the warning light comes on

when there’s between 10% and 15% of the tank’s capacity left. When it starts flashing, you probably have less than 10% left. If you’re lucky, your car might have a digital display to give you an estimate of how many miles you have left. But even these aren’t fully accurate. Try not to focus on how much fuel is left in the tank once the

management system should shut down before you run out of fuel, preventing damage to the car. But with petrol cars there’s no system like that in place. Getting stranded is another concern. You might be on the motorway with cars whizzing past you at high speed. But wherever you break down could be dangerous, especially if you’ve broken down after a bend in the road. Here are some quick fuelpreserving tactics for when you start running low: Roll up your windows to reduce wind resistance Drive with a light foot and maintain constant speed Use cruise control if you have it Turn off all electronic accessories and unplug any charging phones Check your tyre pressure – under-inflated tyres could increase fuel consumption.

isn’t illegal, just a bit stressful. However, if you end up stranded in the middle of the road or your breakdown leads to an accident, you could be prosecuted for careless or dangerous driving. This could lead to points added to your driving licence, which in turn could raise your car insurance costs. What are the dangers of driving on an empty tank? Driving with perilously low fuel levels not only leaves you at risk of breakdown, it could also damage your car. As the fuel level gets lower, the car starts picking up debris from the bottom of the tank. This could damage both the fuel filter and the pump. The catalytic converter could also be damaged. If you run out of petrol, it can cause the fuel pump to run dry, which could land you with a £200 garage bill. With diesel cars, the engine

Smart motorway roll-out is paused

The Government has paused the rollout of smart motorways for five years. They’re pausing the roll out so they can gather a full five years’ worth of safety data on the existing smart motorways. Highways England is also investing £900million to improve the safety of existing smart motorways of which £390million is set to go towards adding more emergency refuge areas. By 2025, the government expects there to be a 50% increase in areas to stop on smart motorways because of this funding. Once five years is up, the government will assess the safety data and make an informed decision on what to do about smart motorways. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “One of my first actions as Transport Secretary was to order a stocktake of smart motorways and since then, I have

worked consistently to raise the bar on their safety. “While our initial data shows that smart motorways are among the safest roads in the UK, it’s crucial that we go further to ensure people feel safer using them.” Since 2020, Highways England has made sure that each smart motorway has frequent emergency areas. The M25

now has 10 more of these. They are coloured orange to ensure they’re more visible to drivers. Signage has improved too, so drivers should know where the next emergency stop area is. The M3 and the M20 have ‘radar-based stopped vehicle detection’ which can detect a vehicle that’s stopped. Work is under way to get this technology on the M1 smart motorway stretch. Cameras across all smart motorways have been upgraded for better detection to help police officers find people driving in a closed lane. These are usually marked with a red X. These safety measures could take a while to install on smart motorways though - and the lack of a hard shoulder could still be a safety concern for motorists and campaigners.

Furry good reason to volunteer with your dog

by Lorraine Gibson Here’s a furry good reason to paws for a visit from a special friend. Ask anyone who’s had a visit from Caring Canines and they’ll confirm that dogs really are man’s best friend. This brilliant, self-funded service arranges visits to care homes by four-legged friends that give residents a bit of mood-boosting company. Aware of the huge benefits that come from being in the presence of a gentle dog, Sue Dennett and her friend, Julie Lankshear decided to set up a small, dedicated group of local owners and pets who could visit care homes in Dorset. That was in 2006 and what started as a small-scale ‘something to do’ in their spare time is now a fulltime concern, run from their homes and something they just really love doing. This is reflected in Caring

Canines achieving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. “It’s so rewarding,” says Sue. “Dogs open up all sorts of communications channels. “It’s amazing, even people who are quite poorly respond on seeing them. “They open up a whole new world.” The pandemic has been particularly harsh on care

homes, so the return of this service is incredibly important. “We’ve come back from a ghastly two years and are needed more than ever, so we are recruiting.” she says. “We need dogs - and their owners - who can join us for a set amount of time a week, month, whatever, to help.” Sue adds: “It’s so rewarding but like many small organisations we are struggling back to normality and having more members to spread our special doggy magic would be wonderful.” So, what sort of dogs are they looking for? “It’s all about the temperament,” says Sue. Regardless of breed, size, whatever, it’s all about the dog. Are they gentle when taking titbits? Well-behaved? Confident? Gentle? “They do need to be at least 10 months old, and need to live within 15 miles of

Bournemouth, but otherwise, a good temperament is everything.” Caring Canines is a completely free service which runs on a tiny budget, so a ‘thank you’ donation is always welcome. The dogs are particularly beneficial for people with dementia but everyone benefits from a stroke and a pally paw. Sue says: “I think the photo of Stella and Max says it all. Caring Canines are known as the ‘Happiness Dogs’ and we always say ‘a smile makes it all worthwhile’.” To volunteer or find out more contact Sue Dennett on 01202 764571 or sue_ daisy@yahoo.co.uk Dachshund puppies (miniature smooth haired) Silver dapple. Pets

A safe bet for finding your pet Unfortunately, sometimes our pets decide to go walkabout and this can understandably cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. Having your pets microchipped (including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and tortoises) is by far the best way to ensure you are reunited as quickly as possible. Even the most loyal of dogs and the most indoor of cats can go missing. Rabbits can get out of their run and hop off, tortoises can make a slow getaway, and ferrets will find the smallest of holes! It’s now compulsory to have your dog microchipped and the Government have committed to introducing a

law that cats will also need to be chipped in the future. Your vet will be able to

implant the microchip safely and is around the size of a grain of rice – it

takes just a few seconds. Like a normal injection, it is inserted under the skin at the back of the neck, and once there, lasts a lifetime. Should your pet go missing and be found, veterinary centres, rescue centres, dog wardens and any other organisation which is likely to encounter stray animals are able to use a universal microchip scanner to identify the animal and the owner. This means your lost pet will be back home safe and sound as quickly as possible. And don’t forget, it’s important if you move house, to up-date your personal details on the national database. vetsmiths.co.uk.

Every man has the chance of an island We often talk about the longing to own a piece of England, but how about if that piece of England was in fact on an island! Morgan Clement, rural surveyor at Symonds & Sampson’s Wimborne office is offering just that, an attractive parcel of pasture and woodland situated on an island in the River Stour at Charlton Marshall. To reach the land, which is just over an acre in size, you either wade or use a small boat. Once you’re there, you can even light your camp fire and fish for your

supper, as fishing rights on the river are included in the sale. For sale by auction on April 7, 2022 with a guide of £25,000, find details at symondsandsampson.co.uk or call Morgan on 01202 882103. Coincidentally, our Blandford office is

selling a charming house in Charlton Marshall with a riverside garden opposite the island. The deceptively spacious four-bedroom Grade II listed cottage is for sale with a guide of £595,000, visit the website or call 01202 843190 for details.
