ARCHEX 2022: IN. REAL. LIFE

The Master’s studio continued the distinctive nature of UNSW Architecture in offering four design studio streams which provide students the opportunity to build design knowledge and skills in relation to one of the following areas: Housing, Urban Conditions, Social Agency and High Performance Technology. The strength of this approach is clearly shown in the work, where creative design solutions are carried through to a high degree of refinement. Thanks to all the leaders of the graduation studios, tutors, guest lecturers and presentation jurors.

I would like to thank 107 Projects for all the amazing help in staging the exhibition this year. We were very fortunate to be able to use this inspiring venue. Thanks also to the exhibition sponsors for your generous support. It is very much appreciated. A big thanks to Dr Cristina Garduño Freeman and the student volunteers who pulled the exhibition together and created such a wonderful environment in which to view the work.

Congratulations to all the graduating students of 2022. You have reason to take great pride in your work and in all you have achieved – the exhibition is clearly testimony to that. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

After meeting Jess Cook, founder of 107 Projects, it finally fell into place.

Jess was a long-term UNSW collaborator introduced to us by Professor David Sanderson. 107

Projects is an independent notfor-profit arts organisation that manage and curate inclusive and inspiring places in inner Sydney for creative thinkers to thrive. They offered to host the exhibition at the Joynton Avenue Creative Centre aka ‘107 Green Square’.

‘107 Green Square’ is the awardwinning 2018 heritage conversion of the decommissioned South Sydney Hospital Esme Cahill nurses’ quarters.

Our very own Dr John Gamble spent time there as a child while visiting his older sisters who were training to be nurses!

The adaptive reuse of the Esme Cahill building is the work of Peter Stutchbury Architecture and Design 5 – Architects. They created a three-storey
