This design proposal aims to diversify the site into more than just a library as outlined by the brief. The strategy developed to meet this criterion is derived from the Green Square Library which generated a public ‘precinct’ by pushing the library space below. However, to shield the ground plane from the harsh Broken Hill climate, the library is elevated to the first floor, leaving the ground floor public precinct. The ground plane’s squares and courtyards are activated by the café, gallery, exhibition space, amphitheatre, stage and visitor centre. The sparse, mostly transparent ground floor masses allow safety, while framing the major passages of circulation between Blende and Argent Streets. The library is located on the gabion-clad first floor and above. It extends radially from the centre vertical circulation core to shade a large portion of the site.
