Rocky was inspired by “Banquet of the Civic Guard”, painted by van der Helst in the 1600’s. UNT DEBATE - A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE Did you know that UNT has some of the top debate teams in the country? UNT placed in the top 30 nationally this year, placing over teams from Harvard, NYU, and Baylor. During this past year’s tournaments, UNT defeated teams from Oklahoma, A&M, University of Kentucky, and SMU to name a few. This is Brian Lain’s 14th year coaching the UNT Debate Team. I asked him to give me a little more history about the team. He informed that UNT has had debate teams in the top 50 teams for the past 50 years. Debate at UNT dates back to 1901, but the team started gaining traction in the 40’s when national tournments picked up. In 1947 West Point began an annual invitational tournament to see whichdebate team wat the best in the nation. In just its second year (1948) North Texas won the tournament, coached by a female faculty member Ms. Olive Johnson and graduate student Ms., June Mandeville. In 1962 UNT participated in a series of televised intercollegiate debates, sponsored by NBC. They had such a tremendous winning streak that they were challenged to a debate by Oxford. UNT beat them in a prime-time televised event, an upset that was covered by Time magazine. I asked Brian Lain what we can expect from the team this year. “We hope for continued success. Look for us to increaces our national ranking in both parlimentary and policy debate.” UNT wishes them luck at their upcoming debates on February 5th in Brownwood and Austin Texas.

UNT RESEARCHER FINDS CHILE, NOT CANADA, HAS THE PUREST WATER ON EARTH Dr. Guido Verbeck traveled near Puerto Williams, located at Chile’s southernmost tip to test water purity. Dr. Verbeck is the director of the Laboratory of Imaging and Mass Spectrometry at UNT and designed a travel-sized spectrometer for this project. Puerto Williams is below latitude 55 degrees south, out of air currents that carry industrial pollutants generated in the northern hemisphere. Verbeck’s worked collaboratively with the University of Magallanes and the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity at Omora Park. Dr. Verbeck is the latest of many distinguished professors from UNT to travel to the UNT-Chile Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation.
ANTHROPOLOGY BRINGS A NEW FLAVOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCE The Anthropology Department joined the College of Arts and Sciences in January, becoming our 19th department. The faculty is entirely composed of applied anthropologists whose research focuses on real-world issues. Pankaj Jain, George James, and Alicia Re Cruz are organizing an International Conference on Rural Strategies for Sustainability. Mariela Nuñez-Janes is currently finishing a co-authored book, Eclipse of Dreams: The Undocumented-led Struggle for Freedom that tells the stories of undocumented youth who have turned oppression and hopelessness into faith and commitment for a better future. The Anthropology Department offers unique classes to their students that provide real-world experience for students entering the workforce. Christina Wasson’s Design Anthropology course partnered with Nissan last year to explore “the social life of the car” and investigate drivers’ behaviors. We look forward to seeing what the Anthropology Department does next.
