BRAND BE THE DIFFERENCE.
INTRODUCTION
Our brand is shaped by the single organising idea Inspiring Global Citizens. This motivates and informs every aspect of our brand and is supported by our four values; Respect, Integrity, Spirited and Empowered. NDT | 4
POSITIONING STATEMENT
We believe young New Zealanders will define the future, locally and globally through the spirit of the United Nations. With awareness and understanding and by acting with respect and integrity, we will be inspiring global citizens. NDT | 5
SINGLE ORGANISING IDEA At the centre of any strong brand sits a strong idea – this is called the single organising idea. This isn’t be a strapline for external use – they come and go according to our marketing strategies. Single organising ideas are internal drivers with a more holistic and longer term view on what the organisation needs to stand for and a cue to how it goes about achieving this.
INSPIRING GLOBAL CITIZENS
INSPIRING GLOBAL CITIZENS works on two levels. We are Inspiring Global Citizens through providing a context for young New Zealanders to explore themes and issues that will equip them for the future. As spirited individuals they will develop skills and build rich, deep relationships. Our growing network of alumni will then, in turn, inspire a more harmonious world.
NDT | 6
OUR BRAND VALUES RESPECT We identify with communities beyond national borders and understand our role in a globalised world. with an open mind and through shared experiences we build deeper relationships and trust.
SPIRITED our youthful enthusiasm for the rights and dignity of our fellow human beings drives our determination to challenge and change attitudes.
INTEGRITY we stand up for what we believe in and stay true to our word – our collective reputation requires this.
EMPOWERED we are committed to unlocking the potential of our people and equipping them with the necessary skills to excel. our culture provides, encourages and rewards leadership.
NDT | 7
OUR CORE IDENTITY
NDT | 8
OUR CORE IDENTITY SYSTEM
Locked up with an identifiable typographic mark, the core identity of our brand also becomes a versatile and recognisable system that works across various applications and helps remedy our complex brand/ programme architecture. BRAND Used in all corporate communications including website, social media, stationery, advertising and international events (THIMUN, UNYC, etc).
FLAG DEVICE In addition, the core identity can be used in certain situations within a flag device. the flag device is designed to leverage, in a contemporary way, further equity from the parent brand. it allows us to be seen as “flagbearers for the greater un cause in a way that is dynamic, unique and identifiable.
NOTE: The flag device is always placed at the lower right hand edge of a poster/document. Please be careful when using the flag device. Please contact the NDT Director first before using the flag device for guidance.
NDT | 9
PROGRAMME Identifiers used in controlled situations to communicate about UN Youth programmes at a national and regional level. The following are the programme identifiers for 2011. NATIONAL National events have their corresponding shorthand identifiers. Shorthand identifiers are used when there is a core identifier or flag device already used in the material.

STATEMENTS
Our imagery is layered with thought provoking statements that build on our core identity and promote debate. In our messages we play with ambiguity by using ‘UN’ in the same joined manner as in our core identity. For example:
UN+ STOPPABLE
This could be read as ‘unstoppable’ and/or ‘U.N. stoppable’.
The images are real. The question mark is silent. Contrasting perspectives and double meanings are deliberate. Is there a correct answer? If not, why not? What role does the UN play in each situation? Who’s opinion matters? We are inviting the audience to Be The Difference simply by joining the debate. By raising the big issues in this way we are identified as thought leaders. This identifies us as a confident organisation and engenders us to our market. This approach also provides a graphic design system that incorporates elements of our core identity in a meaningful way. NOTE: The statements will be decided by the conference coordinators with assistance of the NDT and National Executive when needed. Please plan out the perfect statement(s) for your conference that suits your theme/topic.
NDT | 12
OUR COLOUR PALETTE
Our colour palette reflects our brand strategy – being inspiring, uplifting, respectful and credible. It is limited to the colours indicated here and additional colour is introduced through imagery. White and blue are used predomently with black used sparingly to maintain the peaceful, open feeling of the brand. Yellow is reserved as a highlight accent for use with imagery only.

OUR TYPEFACE Gotham Narrow is our core typeface. It is used on all UN Youth New Zealand communications. It is a clean, contemporary and friendly typeface that is has extensive family of weights for various applications. Arial is the secondary typeface. Only the NDT has the copy of the Gotham Narrow typeface due to licencing restrictions. For documents and online, please use the Arial typeface. However, please rember that there is a MS Word template prepared for officeholders. Please contact the NDT Director if you do not have one yet.

PEACE - This is Gotham Narrow Black. It is mainly used for emphasis, especially in writing documents (like using bold) and as a subheader title. It is mostly used in ALL CAPS or Capitalised but never italicised (except when used on the poster) PEACE - This is Gotham Narrow Thin. Never change the scaling of the fonts.
NDT | 15
DOCUMENTS
This concerns all officeholders. 1. When producing documents and/or letters and other file materials, please use the MS Word templates provided for you, even when communicating within just the organisation. For conference coordinators and members, always use the specific MS Word template that has your event logo (example: NZMUN, Youth Dec, etc). If you are not part of a particular event, please use the generic template. This is a good practice to present ourselves as professionals even when we are just exchanging documents with each other. This is also useful for our database, documentation of files, and it makes it easier for identification. If you do not have your MS template yet, please contact the NDT Director. 2. For bulleting, you can use ‘-’, ‘•’, numbers, letters, Roman numerals. Do not use other symbols. 3. This concerns the NDT, but other officeholders are also welcome to follow our file naming system. It will be more convenient to have a file naming guideline to avoid confusion with the files and to make our NDT materials more organised and easier to manage. When organising the NDT database please follow the syntax below: Syntax: YEAR-EVENT INITIALS-MATERIAL(INCLUDE NUMBER IF THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE)-NAME-VERSION NUMBER.FILE EXTENSION Example: 2011-NZMUN-POSTER01-ALLIV-01.pdf Notes: 1. All caps. 2. Always add ‘0’ before the numbers 1-9. 3. Version numbers are important to keep track of what version you are working on. Never use ‘draft’ or ‘final’. Only the NDT Director can add ‘final’ at the filename once it has been approved by the committee for release. 4. For event and material initials, please refer to the next page for the list of possible initials. This will help us keep all our files uniform and organised. NDT | 16

TASK MANAGEMENT
This is how we will manage all our requests. The first point of enquiry when it comes to brand and design is the NDT Director.
Officeholder/coordinator contacts the NDT Director.
NDT Director designates the task to the NDT member(s)
NDT Director sends notes to the member or makes changes if necessary.
NDT Director forwards the material to the officeholder/ coordinator for appoval.

NOTE: Please read through our guidlines regarding task management on the next page.
NDT members forwards the material to the NDT Director.
3
5 NDT | 23
1. There will only be one person from each committee to contact and coordinate with the NDT Director. This is to avoid miscommunication. 2. For new requests, contact the NDT Director first. The NDT Director will then forward the task to the NDT member(s). Avoid contacting the other NDT members for requests directly as we would like to maintain a more organised task flow and even out the task distribution within the team. Also, the NDT Director takes note and records all the requests that is going through the NDT, so all requests must pass by the NDT Director first. 3. Once the task is designated to the NDT member(s) the assigned person of the committee/officeholder can then coordinate with the NDT member for the task and details. 4. The final approval of the material will be made by the NDT Director and the officholder/designated committee member. This is also with guidance from the National Executive. 5. Please give at least 1 week working time for the NDT to finish the request. Avoid rushing requests. We will only accept rush requests depending on the situation. Importantly, will not allow rushed requests just because there is a delay within your committee. Please be considerate and try to include the NDT working time when planning your event. We do not want to compromise the quality of the materials and the brand itself. We invested a lot for this image and we would like to be a professional as we can be, so please avoid rush requests. 6. Only send the final file for the NDT to work on (for handbooks, documents, etc). Make sure the file you send is: a. final (no more changes to be made) b. thoroughly checked for spelling and grammatical errors. c. no more additionals edits to be made The NDT will not be responsible for copyreading the document. We will only be responsible for the design and layout. The content, however, is all up to the committee. In addition, we will only allow changes and updates in certain circumstances, but please avoid this as it will be problematic for the workflow. 7. Means of communication: through email (use your @unyouth.org.nz if you have one) or GMAIL chat. Avoid sms, Facebook message, calls (unless necessary). This is to make sure that all the information, files, etc is in our email so we can go through them in the future when needed.
NDT | 24
MAKING REQUESTS
This is a suggested timetable when making requests to the NDT. We can consider it the ‘ideal’ time frame to make sure that our materials are released on time and are on their highest quality. MORE THAN ONE MONTH BEFORE THE EVENT - Main materials are requested such as your event logo, MS Word template, and MS PowerPoint template. - You can start asking the NDT for promotional materials such as posters and short video promo of your event. Once you have sorted out the details of your event, contact the NDT Director as soon as possible. - Invitations and promotional handbooks are requested at this stage. - You should start looking for your photographer and/or videographer so that we can acknowledge them immediately on the materials that we will be releasing. ONE MONTH BEFORE THE EVENT - Delegate, Facilitator, Promotional and other conference handbooks are requested at this stage. - Other promotional materials are also requested TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE EVENT - Final hanbooks/packs are requested. - Conference materials are requested such as placards, nametags, banners/tarpaulins, certificates, memo pads, etc. - Presentation slideshows ONE WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT - Final requests are made. - Avoid sending requests if there is less than a week before your event.
