Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

Welcome to our creative, diverse, and forward-thinking Faculty. Each aspect of the work we’re doing is rooted in a commitment to celebrate different perspectives, promote equality of opportunity, and pursue academic excellence. Our aim is to help you achieve more than you thought possible through the abundance of opportunities you will find within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

We hope that you enjoy your time with us and that you get a real feel for what our Faculty has to offer you. I encourage you to talk to as many staff and students as you can, and to ask any questions about what studying here is really like. We’re here to provide key information and guidance so that you can move forward on your learning journey with us, feeling inspired for your next step.

Pro Vice Chancellor (International) and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Where You’ll Study

Explore, push boundaries, create, and innovate in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment where you will thrive and reach your full potential.

Our subject areas are spread across multiple campuses including:

Exton Park

The historic Exton Park is where our story began, offering a wide range of courses since opening its doors in 1839. Today you’ll find a variety of academic Schools, some fantastic teaching and learning facilities and plenty to keep you entertained. It’s situated only a 10-minute walk from the city centre and provides a friendly, secure and supportive environment in which to live and study.

Creative Campus, Kingsway

Kingsway is our specially developed creative arts campus offering a range of modern facilities and equipment to bring learning to life. This close-knit campus is all about an immersive learning experience and an open environment for you to showcase your creativity, both inside and outside your learning.

Gateway House

Nestled right in the heart of the city centre, just opposite Storyhouse and the City Hall, Gateway is the home of our Journalism, English and Creative Writing courses. With a media studio, Apple Mac lab and even its own radio station, Gateway is packed full of the facilities students need to develop their craft.

Whichever subject area you’re interested in pursuing, you will have access to fantastic facilities in a buzzing city that is rich in culture.

After

my classes, I really enjoy taking a scenic walk along the river or across the city walls – it’s very peaceful!

Explore Chester

Be sure to visit the city centre if you can. Take a look at our top picks for your Applicant Day visit and see why Chester is a place you could one day call home.

Storyhouse

Food and Drink

Chester’s streets are lined with cuisine from around the world, mixing well known favourites such as Knoops café, in with independent eateries. There are hidden foodie gems down side streets, and in the New Chester Market on Northgate Street.

Next to Chester Market and opposite Gateway House is Storyhouse – a cultural centre containing two state-of-the-art theatres, a cinema, library, restaurant and two bars. It’s a great place to stop for a coffee and see where you could be hanging out with friends.

Chester is a beautiful historical city and its heritage, hidden gems, safety and lovely people played a key role in my decision to study at the University of Chester.

Shopping

High street favourites, designer boutiques, independent gems - Chester has everything you need when it comes to shopping. As well as the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, a stroll through some of Chester’s hidden streets uncovers a host of unexpected independent shops, music venues and galleries.

Historic Sights

Chester is steeped in history, and you’ll find historical treasures throughout the city – the impressive Cathedral, the iconic Eastgate Clock, the black and white Rows and the Roman Gardens. Walking the Roman walls is a great way to explore and get some incredible views over the city.

Nightlife

Chester’s nightlife ranges from quirky bars to historic pubs and clubs. There’s live music, creative cocktails and student discounts abound! Chester’s thriving night-time economy has also earned it ‘Purple Flag’ status as a safe, student-friendly city.

What Happens Next?

Here’s a quick guide to confirming your place and what happens before the start of term.

Responding to Offers

If you haven’t already, you’ll need to respond to your university offers. You can do this, and view your deadline for responding, via the UCAS Hub: accounts.ucas.com/account/login

Confirming Your Place

If your offer of a place is conditional, you’ll need to wait until you receive your exam results in the summer before your place is confirmed. We’ll then be in touch to let you know. If you have any queries or concerns in the meantime, just get in touch with our friendly Admissions Team: admissions@chester.ac.uk

Welcome Information

Between now and October you’ll receive regular updates from us about what you need to do each step of the way, so keep an eye on your emails! Your official ‘welcome’ email will be sent towards the end of August and will contain lots of important information about your induction to the University.

Apply for Accommodation and Finance

Both accommodation and finance are now open and we encourage you to apply as soon as you can. You can find more information about both, including deadlines, accommodation options and the scholarships and bursaries availible on our website.

Welcome Week

For most courses, Welcome Week will start on Monday 6th October. Please note, some teaching may begin prior to this date. We will be in touch soon with more information. Attendance is essential for:

• Completing key tasks like enrolment to officially join the University.

• Meeting your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) and attending academic induction sessions.

• Making friends, building connections, and settling into university life.

• Learning about Chester and joining our vibrant community.

The full list of events will be available on our Student Shout Out platform in August, including social activities and fairs hosted by Chester Students’ Union and the University. These events offer great opportunities to connect with fellow students, join sports teams and societies and, of course, pick up plenty of freebies!
