Film and Media Studies

Studying for a degree in Film and Media Studies with us gives you the opportunity to explore some of the most culturally significant and creatively diverse industries that influence our world. Blending theory and analysis with creativity and practice, students develop the abilities needed to understand, interpret and deconstruct a wide range of film and media texts, and are equipped with a range of practical and technical skills to create wellrounded and informed media experts of the future.

Your study of film starts with an in-depth look at Hollywood, through its history and development to its cultural and industrial dominance, its stars, its directors and its stories. But this is just the beginning. As your studies progress, you will explore key moments in cinema from around the world, discover a wide range of films and filmmakers, and examine the role of the critic, the screenwriter and the director.

Beyond cinema, you will also study a wide range of media forms, including television, documentary, animation, news, podcasts, video games and social media. From investigating the role of the media in politics to exploring the creation of visual narratives in games, discovering the development of animation techniques or considering the role and function of social media in 21st century life, your studies will take you on an exciting, varied and multifaceted journey.

Analyse, explore, create

Film and Media Studies is taught through a range of lectures, seminars, workshops, group work and practical sessions. More theoretical modules introduce you to different academic perspectives, debates and constructs, and encourage you to analyse and critique the way different forms of media are constructed. You will also have the chance to exercise and develop your creative skills. Whether writing film reviews, producing storyboards, developing dramatic scripts, or creating an animation, podcast, or fictional and factual screen content, you will continue to build your practical and technical abilities throughout your degree. In your final year dissertation, you will research a specialist topic of your choice, allowing you to use your skills and knowledge to explore an area of interest in considerable depth.

A dynamic learning environment

Staff expertise

You will be taught by lecturers who are actively researching and writing in their specialist fields. This includes current work on Hollywood cinema, film and television representation, fandom, food and media, performance and engagement, 360 filmmaking, and popular music. The variety of ongoing research reflects the range of perspectives and ideas you will be introduced to as you study across the three years. You will also benefit from the knowledge and skills of a number of staff who have worked in various media industries and have experience and expertise in media production. This will be invaluable as you develop your own practice and enhance your understanding of an ever-changing, multi-skilled industry.
