Journalism

Report on world events, find and tell untold stories and develop your portfolio while studying Journalism at the University of Chester.

Are you the kind of person who always wants to be the first to know? Do you have the drive and determination to seek out new voices and new perspectives? If so, the journalism course at the University of Chester will challenge you to do just that.

By offering a blend of practical and academic teaching, we aim to instil in our students the skills and confidence they need to succeed in this competitive industry. Whether you want to produce high-quality analyses of how journalism records history, captures our present and may shape our future, or jump into the role of a journalist, our modules allow you to follow your passions.

Past students have interviewed Hollywood stars, questioned high-profile politicians and met with journalists in the business, including speakers from leading regional and national publications, magazines and websites. They have also gone on to secure roles at regional and national publications, from The Argus to Newsweek

“I’d say for me, the course has given me a lot more confidence. It’s given me the self-belief to do things like write articles and interview people. It makes me think: yes, I can do this as a job. Don’t get me wrong; it’s hard work. It’s demanding but it’s rewarding at the same time. I didn’t expect that, in a few months, I’d go from being a complete novice to putting out stories and news.”

The practical skills we teach include news research and writing, photography, audio-visual filming and recording techniques, using social media to find and tell stories and much more. We also support our students to develop the kind of critical thinking skills that are vital in today’s information-saturated world.

Journalism takes you places: literally. Our students have travelled to Berlin, Prague and Amsterdam on study trips. Closer to home, you might find yourself dipping into live election night coverage, court reporting, theatre and gig reviewing and covering debates and demonstrations. Chester is a small city, but there is always something going on. Scratch the surface and find out!

Whether you care about technology or travel, wrestling or writing, food, feminism or fashion, you can follow your passion through the course.

Facilities

Students have dedicated journalism suites at Gateway House in the city centre. These newsroom facilities are complete with Apple Macs with creative software, and large screens running the news. The specialist journalism studio is an ideal space for filming news reports and recording audio packages. There’s also a range of production equipment which can be borrowed including cameras, audio recorders and mics, mobile filming kits and portable lighting.

Like many universities across the UK, we are carefully planning for the next year to ensure the health and safety of our students and to ensure that however the situation may develop or change, the academic year will be completed for all students. This may mean we use some alternative modes of delivery to those described in this leaflet, but we’ll still be delivering a high quality learning experience. Further details will follow on our website once plans have been confirmed.
