“From arranging and conducting my own choir to going on tour, the Popular Music Performance degree has allowed me to gain a vast variety of skills. Throughout my three years of study, I have gained a range of delightful memories which have helped to shape the person I am today. This degree allows you to explore and find your own musical identity and leaves you fully equipped and ready to start a career in music.”

Music Performance

The Popular Music Performance programme at Chester has been created for performers, by performers, to support artist development and hone your performance skills.

The programme is designed to offer opportunities for students to foster a range of unique skills, which can be used in many contexts. Music degrees are highly valued as they don’t just offer a path to a musical career, and many of our University of Chester music graduates have gone onto careers in finance, administration, journalism, publishing, industry, teaching, and much more.

As well as developing wide ranging performance repertoires, many students have found interests in performance-related areas through our diverse range of optional modules. From Performing Musical Theatre to studying a range of indigenous music, students have developed interests and skills in songwriting, and in the area of music technology. We have nurtured some excellent sound engineers who now work in both recorded and live contexts including local music venues. Our programme creates the perfect context for students to develop and refine skills with many opportunities to showcase their talent outside of the module sessions.

‘‘My time studying at the University of Chester was absolutely fantastic. All staff are extremely accommodating and provide everything and more to ensure you achieve your best work. I particularly enjoyed the songwriting module as the sessions really helped develop a variety of important skills and how to utilise them. The ‘Tour’ module is definitely a big highlight from my time here, it really helps you develop as an artist and gives great insights into what being a touring musician is likeas well as doing it all with your friends!”

As well as our dedicated full-time staff and talented visiting lecturers that offer specialist instrumental and vocal tuition, we invite a range of artists and music industry professionals to discuss and demonstrate their work, offering invaluable support and insight into the professional industries. The Performance Practice module in the 2nd Year, provides an opportunity for students to plan and undertake a live tour and the 3rd Year module Developing Professional Practice prepares students for the world of work once they have graduated, through development of professional websites and social media strategies for marketing and artist branding purposes.

Like many universities across the UK, we are carefully planning for the next year to ensure the health and safety of our students and to ensure that however the situation may develop or change, the academic year will be completed for all students. This may mean we use some alternative modes of delivery to those described in this leaflet, but we’ll still be delivering a high quality learning experience. Further details will follow on our website once plans have been confirmed.
