Career-focused Teaching

Our academic staff work directly with employers to assess the skills they need, so we can teach you the theoretical insights and practical applications you need to know for a successful career in your chosen field. Furthermore, many of our courses contain a range of immersive experiences such as language learning modules or work placements for you to learn the skills you need first-hand, make valuable connections and build your professional network.

Social Learning

Our students work together and learn a number of valuable skills in the process. Whether it’s fellow students on your course, or students from a similar discipline, many of our courses include interdisciplinary learning, allowing you to gain a range of valuable transferable skills. Furthermore, you will be taught and supported in-person by passionate and knowledgeable staff who will help you to succeed.

Inclusivity

We have a diverse student body and ensuring that is reflected in how and what we teach is crucial to how we structure our courses. Alongside staff who come from a range of backgrounds, we have created an inclusive environment that allows students’ thoughts, opinions and backgrounds to play a part in course structure and delivery via Student Voice Representatives and Student Race Advocates, which ensures every student feels valued, supported and respected.

Authentic Assessments

Our assessments are conducted to ensure you receive valuable skills you can take into the real world. Rather than traditional exams, our assessments are embedded and continuous, with assessments integrated into the learning process and reflecting real-world work. For example, this might take the form of working directly with employers on projects they need, communicating with the public, taking part in interviews, or producing valuable resources such as blogs, leaflets and podcasts.

Consistent Structure

The majority of our courses are structured in a way that means you’ll consistently know where you need to be and when well in advance, allowing you to focus on your studies alongside paid employment, family, and other commitments. Teaching takes place over three terms with you studying no more than two modules at a time, resulting in a timetable that is well-planned and consistent, so it can perfectly complement your current lifestyle.

Chester’s Professional Development Module

At Chester, we will provide you with a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience that will benefit you in the future.

The majority of our courses offer a unique and innovative module in the second year that will give you the choice to pursue an area you are personally interested in. It will help you stand out from the crowd with real-world experience as you become World Ready and develop into a highly valuable, resilient, future-focused student.

As part of this 40-credit module, you will get the chance to either:

• undertake a work placement

• complete an experiential project

• learn a language

• study overseas.

Work Placements

Our work placement option gives you the unique opportunity to gain real-world work experience through a placement with an external organisation or employer. You’ll have the chance to apply and integrate areas of subject and/or professional knowledge, and skills in a real-world setting. Chester students undertake work placements across hundreds of supportive placement providers both locally, nationally, and overseas. Placement providers include Cheshire Constabulary, Cuan Wildlife Rescue, Chester Zoo, National Museums Liverpool, StoryHouse, Countess of Chester Hospital, Waterco, British Heart Foundation (Chester), Cheshire Fire and Rescue and many more.

Experiential Project

During an experiential project, you will participate in a hands-on activity connected to your course content. During the project you will apply knowledge and skills you’ve learned to real-life situations, interacting with peers and stakeholders. Upon completing the project, you gain relevant professional experience which will benefit you in your future career. Our projects are designed by working closely with external employers, to ensure that you are learning the skills they need, and you will be able to offer upon graduating.

Learn a Language

You have the opportunity to learn a new language or build on your existing language skills as part of your degree. You can pick up a 20-credit module in your first year and go on to study 40-credit modules with an optional placement abroad in your second year. Through studying this module, you are able to build on existing knowledge or learn a language, choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish. By studying an additional language, you can pick up a valuable and sought-after skill that will open a range of opportunities for you all over the world.

Study Overseas

You also have the chance to participate in a work, study or volunteer project at a destination around the globe, where you can experience a practical element to your learning. During your placement, you can contribute to projects involving international business, social justice, poverty, development and the environment. This also gives you the chance to make new friends and contacts all over the world and explore new interests and exciting opportunities like trekking or scuba diving. Some of the current destinations include South Africa, USA, France, Spain, Costa Rica and many more.

“With the support of my amazing team at Chester, I was lucky enough to get both a summer and an industrial placement at the Science and Technology Facilities Council; at the end of my industrial placement, I was offered the chance to interview for the Graduate Scheme – and got accepted!”

Get Ahead With A Placement Year

If your course offers the option to complete a Placement Year it can be a great opportunity to get out there and get world ready.

Experience the Workplace

A Placement Year is a fantastic way to apply your learning, gain real-world experience and even earn your first work reference, ensuring you graduate a step ahead.

A Placement Year, often referred to as a ‘sandwich year’, is an optional year of work experience that students can take as part of their undergraduate degree. Typically, this occurs between the second and final year of study. During the placement, students work full time in an organisation relevant to their degree; they gain valuable hands-on experience, develop industry-specific skills, and build a network of contacts in the professional world.

If your course offers the option to complete a Placement Year, you will receive support with finding a placement and whilst you complete it.

Undertaking a Placement Year has lots of benefits, some of which are:

• the opportunity to develop practical and transferable skills in a real working environment

• improved job opportunities once you have graduated, with the potential for a firm job offer before returning to your final year

• real experience in your chosen career

• the opportunity to earn a salary

• practical skills and knowledge that will help you in your final year of study

• the opportunity to go on and achieve higher grades and a better class of degree

• the opportunity to build and develop networks.

See the World and Study Abroad

Connect with a global network through our study abroad opportunities. Get world ready as you pursue an overseas adventure, immerse yourself in fascinating cultures, and open the door to a global future.

Almost all our courses offer the opportunity to study abroad, and there’s no need to learn a language. Let our dedicated team work with you to increase your chance of admission.

Good attendance and participation on your course in your first year could mean spending a full academic year abroad; work with our bilateral exchange partners or International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), a network of over 300 higher education institutions worldwide.

Experiential Overseas Learning

Get future-focused with an introduction to experiential learning in an international context; this option is an overseas alternative to a work placement.

Explore continents such as Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

“For my year abroad, I studied in a city just northwest of Madrid for the full nine months, having the chance to travel all around Spain and meet people from all over the world.”

Languages for All

With our Languages for All courses, you’ll have the chance to learn one of 11 languages from beginner level to advanced. For those who prefer not to travel, this is a great opportunity to learn a language. A reduced rate is offered to undergraduates, but this is fully refundable on completion of the course.

Our current programmes also include subjectspecific or culture and language-based summer schools, lasting between ten days and eight weeks.

Foundation Years

Transition and prepare for undergraduate study at the University of Chester.

What is a Foundation Year?

A Foundation Year offers a transition year entry point into university undergraduate studies for those who may not have the full entry requirements to start on an undergraduate degree. This includes mature students (over 21) with no traditional qualifications but with a passion for learning, self-development, and aspirations to follow a particular career.

At Chester, we offer four-year undergraduate degrees that include a Foundation Year. For example, BA History (including a Foundation Year) or BSc Biomedical Science (including a

Foundation Year). You are an undergraduate as soon as you enrol on your four-year degree and are part of the University’s vibrant undergraduate community from day one.

For mature students, there is no minimum requirement. We review applications on a caseby-case basis and recruit through interviews, primarily assessing individuals on their life experience, and their commitment to study.

Our Foundation Years are also an excellent option for students under 21s who may not have the required UCAS points to start a three-year degree at the University of Chester. We require 72 UCAS points for our four-year degrees.

Why Study a Foundation Year?

Gain Confidence

A Foundation Year at Chester provides you with a subject-specific curriculum and will enable you to gain confidence in developing university-level skills, as well as understanding academic life and transitioning to the next level of your studies.

Degree and Higher Apprenticeships

If you’re thinking about gaining a qualification whilst working, then a degree or higher level apprenticeship may be something you’re interested in.

Delivery

Designed by employers for employers, degree or higher level apprenticeships are an opportunity for businesses to train and support the next generation of employees across multiple roles.

As a student, you would be employed throughout your course and would spend part of your time at the University of Chester, and the rest with your employer, gaining knowledge, skills and behaviours which you would demonstrate in the workplace and through your assessments.

Successful graduates would then leave the University with not only a degree, or higher level qualification, but years of relevant work experience and the valuable connections needed to progress in their chosen specialist sector.

What Courses Are Available at Chester?

At the University of Chester, we currently have four courses available at undergraduate level. We are always reviewing and updating our portfolio, so please contact us if you cannot see the course you are looking for on the list below.

Degree Apprenticeship courses:

• Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship (Level 7)

• Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)

• Social Work Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)

Higher Level Apprenticeship course:

• Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship (Level 5)

How Are the Courses

Designed?

Our courses are co-designed with employers to ensure that apprentice graduates gain the skills they need to thrive in a competitive industry. We provide you with a dedicated team of tutors and support staff offering pastoral care throughout your apprenticeship.

How Do I Apply?

You’ll need to register your interest with us online. Once you’ve done that, we can then send you notifications about new apprenticeship vacancies and our apprenticeship Open Days and events. For more information, and to register online, please visit: chester.ac.uk/apprenticeships

Entry Requirements Explained

Our entry requirements can vary slightly from year to year depending on the subjects you choose. Each course has its own entry requirements, which are shown throughout this prospectus and in more detail at chester.ac.uk

UCAS Tariff Points Explained

You may be unfamiliar with the UCAS tariff and how UCAS points are calculated.

UCAS tariff points are a way of translating grades from several different qualifications – such as A Levels, BTECs or T Levels – into the number of points that are required for entry on to an undergraduate course. This way, universities can set entry requirements that can be achieved with different qualifications.

UCAS allocates each qualification (e.g., A Level, Scottish Higher, etc.) with a value from 1-4, based on the number of learning hours. Each qualification is also allocated a grade band point from 3-14.

How Do I Calculate My UCAS Tariff Points?

To work out how many UCAS points your qualification(s) are worth, go to the UCAS Tariff Calculator and enter your qualification(s) and result(s): ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator

Once you have worked out how many UCAS points you have, see opposite for the University of Chester’s entry requirements.

Our Entry Requirements

Typically, our entry requirements range from 96-112 UCAS points for our Combined Honours degrees and 104-120 UCAS points for our Single Honours degrees. Please refer to the course pages on our website for individual course entry requirements.

Our general entry policy requires you to have:

• A good level of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade C/grade 4 or above in Maths and English Language or suitable equivalent)

• Experience or interest relevant to the course(s) you have applied for

We recognise:

• A combination of study modes (e.g., a combination of A Levels, Pearson BTEC qualifications, Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications)

• Points and grades achieved in A Level General Studies

• New T Level qualifications

If your qualifications were completed some time ago and you are not sure whether they are appropriate for your chosen subject(s) of study, please contact Undergraduate Admissions and we will be happy to discuss your options with you.

Finance Information

Funding Your Studies

Student Loans

There are two types of student loan – Tuition Fee Loans for tuition fees, and Maintenance Loans to help with living costs.

Key facts:

• You will only start repaying the loans when you’re earning over a certain amount.

• There is no deadline for the loans to be repaid in full.

• After a certain amount of time, the outstanding amount will be cancelled (see further information about loan repayments on opposite page).

Tuition Fees

If you’re a first-time undergraduate living in the UK, you are entitled to apply for a loan to have your tuition fees paid on your behalf by the Student Loans Company: slc.co.uk

This non-income assessed loan is paid directly to the University in three instalments if eligible.

At the time of writing, it is not possible to state what our exact fees will be for students starting an undergraduate degree in 2026, but in 2025 our tuition fees for Home students were:

Undergraduate Degree

Full-time: £9,535 per annum

Part-time: £1,590 per 20-credit

module

Foundation Year

Foundation Year (Mainly Business, Humanities, Social Sciences) £5,760

Foundation Year (Creative and Performing Arts, Engineering, Medical subjects, Science) £9,535 Please note, tuition fees may increase for the academic year 2026-27 and future years both for new and continuing students in line with inflation at that time as measured by the Retail Price Index and subject to government approval. For up-to-date fees and finance information, please visit:: chester.ac.uk/finance

Extra Costs

Your course will also involve additional costs not covered by your tuition fees. This may include books, printing, photocopying, stationery, specialist clothing, travel to placements, optional field trips and software. Compulsory field trips are covered by your tuition fees.

For up-to-date details of additional costs associated with your specific course, visit the course page at: chester.ac.uk

Part-Time Students

Tuition Fee Loans are available to eligible part-time first degree students who complete a minimum of 25% of the full-time course load per year. Part-time course fees for the University of Chester vary, but, for self-financing students, fees are normally pro-rata to the full-time fee.

EU Students

Students from countries in the European Economic Area and the EU who started in or after the 2021-22 academic year will pay International Tuition Fees.

Students who have been granted Settled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and, if eligible, will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans.

Students who have been granted Pre-settled Status may be eligible for Home Fee Status and, if eligible, will be able to apply for Tuition Fee Loans.

Irish Nationals living in the UK or Republic of Ireland are treated as Home students for tuition fee purposes.

Living Costs

While at university, you’ll need to think about living costs for accommodation, food, travel and bills, and a Maintenance Loan is there to help with these things. If you’re going to be a part-time student, you may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan.

Our UniJob service enables you to apply for part-time jobs at the University, or you can use our CareerHub portal to find parttime work in the local area and elsewhere.

Loan Repayments

Repayments of your Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan will start in the April after you have graduated or left higher education if you are earning over the threshold.

At the time of writing (February 2025), the student loan repayment threshold for English-resident students is £25,000 a year. Thereafter, it will be adjusted annually in line with average earnings.

If you are earning over the threshold, you repay 9% of everything earned above that amount. If you are earning less than the threshold, then your student loan repayments won’t be deducted.

Interest is charged on your loan from the day the Student Loans Company makes your first payment to you or your university or college, until the loan is either repaid in full or cancelled.
