Alzbeta Nelson BSc (Hons) Geography and Natural Hazard Management Placement at Bibby Hydromap “The most enjoyable aspect of my placement was being able to put my skills into practical application and have visible results at the end of it. It allowed me to improve my geomatics skills and continue to build on the knowledge I had already. It also introduced me to relevant software and allowed me to gain experience using it. From sitting in an interview to working, it set my expectations of what working life might be like after graduation. I wouldn’t have gained this experience in a classroom!”

Syeda Khatun BA (Hons) Graphic Design Virtual Placement at Inspire Rewire “Graphic Design is something I’d only started learning at university, so to gain an advantage when applying for jobs in this field in the future, I knew I needed to get experience somehow. During my placement, I learnt about, and used, new software to create ads and other promotional pieces for the business and was able to develop skills on software I’d already used in the past. It taught me to push myself out of my comfort zone and helped me to become more confident in my abilities. After completing my virtual placement, I was offered a job by Inspire Rewire, and it’s definitely an opportunity I’m glad I took.” 13

Your experiences are what make you We also offer an alternative to Work Based Learning through our Experiential Learning module. This takes place over five weeks and gives you the chance to get involved in a whole range of different project-based learning opportunities. These could be virtual, in-person or even located abroad.

14

Jordan French BA (Hons) International Business Management Placement at INDEC “Last year, I spent 5 weeks working abroad in Hanoi for a company called INDEC, which is an agency that helps Vietnamese students through the process of studying overseas. During my time there, I really enjoyed learning more about the Vietnamese culture, both at work and home, as I lived with a Vietnamese family for the duration of my . So, I picked up some of the language, ate traditional food and got to partake in the daily lunchtime nap at work every day! I really enjoyed this experience, and also loved being able to travel and explore the country on days off, which is why I chose this photo from my tour of the Ha Giang loop in the north of Vietnam.”

15

Earn as you learn Our paid Workplace Experiences are part of the University’s Citizen Student Strategy to help students to build social capital. In collaboration with local employers, Workplace Experiences offer paid, part-time and flexible opportunities, which will allow you to make career connections and develop skills to help you face the future with confidence.

Lucy Whisker BA (Hons) Journalism Financielle Ltd “Building a strong portfolio of written pieces has to be something I am particularly proud of. With help from Holly and Laura, I’ve been able to set up my own freelance content writing business-this is something I would never have been able to do without their advice, positivity and motivation. The highlight of my internship was working alongside two incredibly strong and inspirational women who are disrupting the personal finance space. ”

Cheryl Sorensen BA (Hons) Business Management Learning and Information Services at the University “I was able to gain skills in pedagogy, learning theory, podcasting and learning design using Moodle, H5P and a variety of Microsoft applications. Alongside this, I have further honed my timekeeping, communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills. Working with the team meant that I was often working autonomously, but needed to keep to specific deadlines, so high levels of communication and collaboration were needed. For students who are thinking that these experiences aren’t worth it or that they won’t gain any new skills for something that is part-time, you could not be more wrong.” 16

Placements If you’re studying one of our sandwich degrees, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a year’s professional placement at the end of your second year. This will help you to develop your skills and knowledge by applying what you’ve learnt to a work environment.

Rachel Lewis BSc Accounting and Finance Strategy, Planning & Operations and Finance, Hewlett Packard Enterprise “I wanted my placement to be with a company I was interested in, and where there was a specific intern development programme in place. I secured my place with HPE and now work with the UKIMESA Sales Finance team. This experience has expanded my financial and technical knowledge and has allowed me to take ownership of high-level tasks, giving me the confidence to succeed in the finance industry. I have certainly enjoyed my time at HPE! I have been fortunate to have been offered a graduate role as a Financial Analyst to begin in September 2022! To anyone who is considering a year in industry, do it! The experience you will gain is invaluable and will provide you with a great starting point for your career!”

Sophie Ford International Relations and Politics Study Abroad Destination: Kasese, Uganda - VMM Studying abroad was something I had in mind when choosing my university. I am always looking for new experiences and, as an International Relations student, I thought it invaluable for the practical opportunity to witness first-hand international differences. The countries in Africa have always been of particular interest to me, especially with regards to International Relations, which initially led to me enquiring about Uganda. When I also heard such positive feedback from previous students who did this placement, I knew it was the best choice for me. The Study Abroad team also gave a lot of guidance and reassurance throughout the whole process leading up to, and then during, my time in Uganda; ensuring I was fully aware of all elements of the placement from finances to accommodation. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience - it was an eye-opener to see the differences in work processes in Uganda compared to the UK. NGO and humanitarian work are areas I wish to go into after graduation, so it made me more prepared and aware of what to expect in my future career.”

Stephanie Taylor Company: StephiLouPhotography Founder of StephiLouPhotography

“I got involved with the Venture Programme when I was about to launch StephiLouPhotography. I applied for the Venture Pitch 2021 and won £1000. This enabled me to pay for my editing software, buy branded USBs in bulk for my client work and purchase lots of promotional material. Winning the grant felt like a weight of worry was lifted; I could get out of the rut I was stuck in and move forward with my business. I can now happily hand out flyers, give out business cards and promote my business at events. I can also expand my editing skills with the software I now have. I encourage anyone who may have a business idea to get involved with Venture. Getting to Know... What is the best way to budget and manage your finances in your first year? Student: Katie Halliday Peer Mentor BA (Hons) French and German – 4th Year

Do you have any tips for students living away from home? Stick it out if you find it hard at first! Some people may struggle to adapt to university life, but very often this changes. You just need to remember that everyone is in the same boat!

What do you recommend to help students ‘settle in’? Say ‘yes’ to every opportunity that is thrown your way because it will help you make friends and you may find something you didn’t think you’d enjoy.

Can you tell us what it’s like studying at degree level? It isn’t as difficult as you may be expecting. Your tutors will help you along the way and it is a very smooth transition.

Budgeting works differently for everyone. Some people choose to use apps and others choose to make notes of how much they’re spending. The best thing is to try a couple of different ways in your first few months to see what works best.

What do you wish you had known before starting university? I wish that I’d known how much support there is at the University, from technical support to wellbeing support. There is so much support in place to help you with any problems that you may have.

Why did you want to become a Peer Mentor? The Peer Mentors at Chester have helped me in so many different ways, so I knew that when it came to my second year, I would want to help others in the same way. Being able to speak to other students and support them is really rewarding.

Getting to Know... How are the SU supporting students this year? We are back to business as usual. We have a free independent advice service which can offer support and advice to students on a huge range of issues. We will also be running campaigns, events and activities throughout the year which students can get involved in. So check out our social media pages for the latest up to date information. Jack Rankin Student’s Union President

What plans do you have for the SU for the next year?

I am really enjoying the role. It’s different from my role last year as VP [Vice President] and that comes with new challenges. I am able to influence change at a really pivotal time for the University which is super rewarding. It’s really nice to have students engaged and back on site again!

I am currently carrying out a democracy review to make sure our democratic structures, including officer positions, are the best they can be to represent all Chester students. I will also be working closely with both academic and professional services departments to ensure the student voice is embedded where it can be, to benefit the student experience. The whole team at CSU have so many plans to make this year great!

How can students get involved with the SU?

Choose a film title for your Chester story so far.

How are you finding your time as SU President?

Get involved with societies - they are an amazing way to meet friends and like-minded people, they made my time at university. Secondly, get involved in campaigns, activism and make your student experience the best it can be.

50

The Hobbit - it’s been a journey!

What are student-led projects?

Welly Wednesday

Student-led projects are volunteering projects led by students, for students! Project Leaders are recruited, trained and supported by the University’s Volunteering and Mentoring team to recruit student volunteers and deliver their project. Being involved in a student-led project, whether as a volunteer or as a Project Leader, is a great opportunity to give back to the local community whilst developing key employability skills.

Welly Wednesday is a project which encourages students to get involved in organised conservation activities in and around Chester. They run a number of conservation events throughout the year that students can sign up to as and when they are available. Events have previously included building hedgehog houses, helping maintain local parks and making bird houses!

What projects can I get involved with? Chester Student Dog Walkers:

On this project, volunteers combine their love of food with a desire to give back and help members of their community – they film cooking tutorials to share tips on healthy eating on a budget. These videos are then shared with charity partners, such as Chester Aid to the Homeless (CATCH), who then share the videos with their service users. Whether you would like to design the recipes, cook the dishes or film the process – there is something for everyone!

This highly successful project sees pairs of volunteers walking dogs for people in the local community who can no longer walk them themselves on a regular basis due to illness or injury. The project aims to ensure that dogs remain active with regular walks and is the ideal project for anyone who loves animals!

Letters Against Loneliness:

Chester Healthy Eating Workshops (CHEW)

This student-led project was set up to help combat loneliness and social isolation in members of the local community, by matching them with a student pen pal volunteer. Volunteers communicate regularly by letter, finding out about their pen pal’s hobbies and interests and providing much needed social interaction and connection.

Bonding Through Books Created by two English Literature students, this project was set up in response to the pandemic and the impact this had on young people’s education. The project follows the basic premise of a reading club, enabling children in the local area to be as expressive and creative as possible.

Start your own project Do you have an idea for your own student-led project? Whether you have a full project in mind or just some initial thoughts, it all starts with an idea. The Volunteering and Mentoring team can meet with you to discuss your ideas, as well as provide you with resources, training, support and opportunities to establish, advertise and promote your project.

Green Chester

We have entered into a pivotal time for climate change, and sustainability is at the forefront of the University’s agenda. Our students work closely as part of the Green Team to help us reach our goals. There are lots of opportunities for students to introduce new initiatives, get really creative and put plans into action. All staff and students are encouraged to collaborate on award-winning sustainability events, like our Fix it Fair to share our repair and re-use expertise, or join in with our latest green initiatives such as Digital Climate Cafés and tree planting. Students can also join the People and Planet Society to make their mark during Go Green Week, or get their hands dirty on the on-campus allotment. We aim to inspire a greener generation and provide students with the sustainability skills employers want. To keep up-to-date with Green Chester and find out more about other initiatives, follow us on Facebook and Twitter or sign up to the Warble via greenchester@chester.ac.uk

“I lived in the University-owned Grosvenor House in my first year, and absolutely loved it. It’s great if you want to socialise with people, but also enjoy your own company! It’s so nice to have all of your facilities in one place, and definitely pushes you to be more independent. Most of my friends now are people I met at Grosvenor.” Jazmine, 2nd Year English Literature and Psychology student
