Hints and Tips

Welcome

Helping you make the most of your visit to the STEM Careers Fair.

TOP TIP #1

TOP TIP #2

TOP TIP #3

Check in advance who is coming to the fair. Draw up a wish list and focus on them.

Do your research! Familiarise yourself with what an organisation offers and importantly, what they are seeking in their recruits.

Prepare some questions and tailor them. Don’t ask questions which you can find the answers to easily elsewhere.

TOP TIP #4

TOP TIP #5

TOP TIP #6

Dress appropriately to make a good first impression.

If you impress an employer, they might want to see your CV, so don’t forget to take copies with you.

Be professional, polite and courteous. Display a positive attitude and don’t just help yourself to the freebies.

I‘m delighted to welcome you to this year’s STEM Careers Fair.

Building on the event last year, we have been oversubscribed with graduate recruiters wishing to attend this year’s fair. Having extended the event to accommodate over 75 exhibitors, you will be able to discuss internships, placements and graduate roles, plus further study opportunities with an even wider range of the country’s top organisations working in Science and Technology sectors. Our own team will also be on hand to provide the latest information and advice. Although of particular benefit to those from the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the College of Life and Environmental Sciences and the Medical School, this event is open to all students, regardless of degree or year group.

To make the most of your visit, take time to familiarise yourself with the organisations attending by reading through the entries in this brochure and check their location on the floor plan. Make your first impression a positive and lasting one with the help of the useful hints and tips listed within this guide and by visiting the Career Zone website. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Sparx, for their generous support of the fair. We look forward to seeing you at the event! Paul Blackmore Head of Student Employability and Academic Success

Want to follow up? Make sure you ask for their business card.

Take a notebook – you’re going to need it to jot down important facts.

Finally, hang on to this brochure and use it for reference after the event has finished.

Here at Sparx, in Exeter, we’re using a scientific and research-based approach that takes the guesswork out of education. Through data and real-world classroom observation, we’re investigating what makes the best learning experience in order to improve educational outcomes for students, today and tomorrow. Our platform for Maths uses custom-built content and a powerful, data-driven web and mobile framework to deliver a tailored set of exercises, games and incentives that are redefining the limits of what young people can achieve. Being an intern or graduate at Sparx isn’t about taking a back seat. You’re bright, motivated and an integral member of the team. You’ll be right in there getting

involved in our research, helping discover what works (and what doesn’t) in the field of education. We know University of Exeter students are proactive, enthusiastic and want to make a difference. And we know many of you will want to stay in the university city you’ve called home for a summer internship or graduate role. If you’re studying Maths, Computer Science or any other highly numerate discipline, and you have a real passion for education and a belief in the power of technology to improve it, come and find us at stand 15 and find out how you could make a difference. Are you up for the challenge? www.sparx.co.uk
