Welcome to the first issue of our magazine designed specifically to bring you up to date with the employability-related services on offer to students at Exeter. Published once per term in both electronic and printed format, we’ll be bringing you the latest news on services and developments delivered by Employability and Graduate Development (EGD) and the Career Zone as well as highlights of the excellent services delivered by other providers around the University and through our external partners. We’ll also keep you informed about the main events throughout the year, the employers visiting campus and celebrating the successes of our students and graduates so that they can inspire other students!

Whilst the primary audience for the magazine is our students, we hope that the contents of this magazine will be of interest to all stakeholders, whether you are prospective students or parents, employers, University colleagues or other professional associates. For our employers, we hope that this publication highlights some of the wide range of services that we deliver to help you recruit the most appropriate candidates for your organisation. As this is our first edition we have lots to tell you and to celebrate but we would love to hear your feedback, stories or suggestions for future content. In the mean time my colleagues and I hope you’ll find this magazine useful and interesting. Best wishes Paul Blackmore Head of Employability and Graduate Development

WHAT, WHY, WHO, WHERE IS EGD? WHAT?

WHO?

EGD is the University’s division for Employability & Graduate Development which is part of Academic Services.

5 teams make up EGD who broadly deliver: n Information and help through the Career Zones and My Career Zones n Careers advice and guidance (one-to-one and in groups) n Skills sessions and professional development schemes (eXfactor, Exeter Award etc) n Bespoke help for our PhD and early career researchers n Work experience and graduate job opportunities and; liaise with employers who are keen to offer you a number of career opportunities!

You might normally recognise us as the people who work in the Career Zones or through delivery of support through My Career Zone and the various careers fairs, jobs, skills programmes and employer events we help to deliver both within and outside your degree programmes!

WHY? The University has recognised that this is a major priority for our students but also that planning your future career is not always easy or straight forward. So, EGD has been created to ensure that you have all the help you need to build your skills and knowledge and gain access to the best opportunities out there!

WHERE? You can find us in the Career Zones at both Streatham and Penryn but you’ll often see us at various careers fairs and delivering sessions as part of your degree programme (and of course virtually through our website and My Career Zone).

So come and see us in the flesh!

I felt inspired to take the next steps and was given a wide range of relevant options – this was particularly useful as it’s easy to find out options online, but this was personalised advice.

So, how are we doing? n Students accessed employability programme 35,000 times last year (14,300 in 2010) n

90% of students were impressed with the quality of information on the Career Zone website

n 93% of students felt they had increased their knowledge as a result of visiting the Career Zone n

82% of students wanted to look at more careers information as a result of reading the careers newsletter

n 96% of student felt their CV reviews made a positive difference to them n 98% would recommend the Career Zone to a friend n 20% increase in ‘employer satisfaction’ over last 2 years (Source: QS World Rankings)

During 2012-13 the scheme supported 115 mentoring matches, many international in nature, between enthusiastic students and Exeter alumni mentors and graduate professionals from various occupations and sectors.

Ian’s mentee Kate described how having a mentor boosted her confidence in gaining a graduate position:

“For me, it was really satisfying in terms of giving feedback in a way that allowed Kate to pick those things up, to share all my experiences from over the years, and to help other people and see how they work through their careers.”

Alumnus Ian Martin, self-employed Management Consultant and mentor of Sociology student, Kate Cragg, told how

“Ian has really given me confidence to take to my new job and to build on the skills that we looked at. This experience made securing my job so much easier.” Peter Baldwin, Partner at Ropes & Gray LLP, praised Law student Laura Clark, for

h t i w p u Keeping s... r e g g o l b the Last year the Global Opportunities Team held its first Work Abroad Blog Competition for ERASMUS students. They were of an impressively high standard and we are happy to announce that our first ever Global Blogger of the Year is Daniel Walker! Not only a great networking tool but a blog can also be a: personal record of your time abroad aimed at friends and family; factual account of your experiences aimed at a wider audience; platform to track and promote your career development; platform for researching a wide range of topics.

Where to start: Some popular choices (often free) are WordPress or Blogger. Your topic: Topics may vary but if you have been asked to write a blog as part of a work abroad grant requirement then you will need to reflect on your workplace experiences. Creating a look: Make sure it reflects your personality and overall experience. Think about colours, images and photos for your banner and an interesting title! Careers fairs allow you to meet a range of career opportunity providers and learn what they’re looking for in their future employees. Even if you don’t know what you want to do, this is the first step to finding out! Here are our top tips… Check who is attending by reading the fair booklet (available online) and the fair listing on My Career Zone. Make a ‘wish list’ of companies and focus on them. You’ll stand out if you can demonstrate an understanding of an organisation, so familiarise yourself with what they offer before the day. Prepare questions in advance and tailor them – don’t ask questions you could find easily elsewhere!

PREPARE FOR THE Don’t panic if you want to approach a company who’s not on your list! Look at their fair brochure entry or ask staff on our Career Zone stand for a breakdown of what they do. If you have a smart-phone, Google them!

Dress appropriately! You’re not expected to be suited and booted (unless you want to be), but don’t rock up wearing an expletives-covered t-shirt. You’ll get noticed but for all the wrong reasons!

Approaching complete strangers can be daunting. So when you arrive, don’t rush to your favourite organisation. Instead, network with others first, to increase your confidence.

Be professional, positive, polite and courteous. Don’t just help yourself to the freebies!

Recruiters meet hundreds of students, so consider yourself a brand and determine your USP (Unique Selling Point). Impress them and they may ask for your CV. Take upto-date copies with you but have it checked by Career Zone staff first. However, don’t be offended if they don’t take your CV and simply direct you to their website. Don’t get hung up on the salary and benefits. Employers take a dim view of applicants who are only interested in what an organisation can do for them.

Feel free to ask a recruiter for their business card – you might want to ask further questions or reference them in your application. Take a notebook to jot down important facts. You’ll need it! View upcoming fairs at www.exeter.ac.uk/careers/events/ careersfairs

“We chose Exeter as we’re aware you are one of the top 10 universities in the UK. We also have a few interns from Exeter working with us this summer who have all been of a very high calibre.” Jacqui Higgins, Onsite Account Specialist for Eli Lilly.

irst – My Stor y F h c a e T o t g n i Apply By the time I went to study English and History at Exeter’s Penryn Campus, I thought I had moved on from my aspiration as a child of wanting to be a teacher just so I could drink tea in the staff room and be as mysterious as those who taught in Enid Blyton’s books. Indeed, I graduated with a high 2:1 in 2012 and began to plan for a career in communications. By September, I had settled in to a Graduate Business Partnership role at the University. I first met Teach First at a Careers Fair and began to look at the possibility of teaching. Having always felt passionately about the importance of allowing children to access a good education, I supported the Teach First mission wholeheartedly. I just wasn’t sure a lifetime of teaching was for me. It wasn’t until I began applying for other graduate jobs, that I began to research Teach First properly.

Recognising that they fundamentally recruit ‘leaders’ rather than ‘teachers’ was important to me. For me, the education system is not only about creating great teachers but also making sure the policy and governing body are actively helping to close the gap between the disadvantaged and the advantaged children. Teach First believe this too, which is why they look for graduates to teach for two years before choosing how they continue to support them further in their career.

10

The recruitment team are fantastic and supportive. I was granted a place at an Assessment Centre a week after submitting my application and was offered a Secondary English Teacher role two days later. You really feel like they want you to succeed; I was offered advice on both my application form and interview. There is also an overwhelming desire within the entire charity to work towards giving every disadvantaged child the education they deserve. The stories I heard from other Teach First graduates, combined with my own aspirations, have meant I am now likely to continue to be a teacher after I complete my two years with Teach First. Rebecca Hadfield Did you know… Exeter graduates receive a £500 bonus if they are successful applicants?

I wanted to make a difference. So I did. Just 16% of pupils eligible for free school meals make it to university, compared to 96% from independent schools.* Change their lives. Change yours.

CASUAL JOBS SERVICE The Career Zone’s Casual Jobs Service provides employment and work experience support for current Exeter students. We offer opportunities to earn money and gain employability skills whilst studying. To look for casual work and for further information on the opportunities below please visit www.exeter.ac.uk/careers/parttimejobs or email casual@exeter.ac.uk. Come and see us in person in the Career Zone 10am – 4pm, Monday to Friday during term-time!

STUDENT EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARDS In 2013 we organised entries for the Student Employee of the Year Awards (SEOTY). The Awards recognise the outstanding contribution of students who combine part-time work with their studies

and are the largest employability awards in the UK for current students. This year we had a record 77 nominations and are very proud to have had four regional finalists and one national winner – Beth Whiteman, who was named National on Campus Employee of the Year – well done Beth! Our success in this competition is indicative of the University’s strength as an employer, the exceptional talents of the students who study here and how many of them also work during their studies. We will be looking for nominations for 2014, so if you’re working part time anywhere this year please send an email to casual@exeter.ac.uk telling us about your job.

CASUAL JOBS AND INTERNSHIPS FAIRS Our Casual Jobs and Internship Fairs take place in October and February and are open to all students looking to find part-time work experience. A selection of employers will be attending to recruit students for future work in the local area.

These events are a great way for students to find out more from their potential employers and the range of opportunities available and they enable recruiters to engage with the student community directly. Email casual@exeter.ac.uk for more information.

CRAFT and traders FAIRS This annual event is aimed at supporting talented students who wish to run their own ventures, look to gain extra-curricular skills or simply want to earn money by making and selling their own products and crafts. The fair is free to attend and we advertise and promote the event to all students, staff, friends and family.

How to find a

part-time job Our top 10 tips for finding part-time work!

Casual work whilst studying at University is the perfect way to gain experience, earn extra money and meet new people. For advice on where to start follow our top tips below.

1.

6.

Update your Career Zone profile with job preferences set to casual/part-time work. This way, you can receive regular and relevant emails from the Career Zone team.

Be selective – don’t waste time looking for jobs unsuited to your university timetable and personal requirements.

2.

7.

Regularly check our jobs board located in the Career Zone for the most up-to-date opportunities in Exeter.

Beat the rush! – think about when employers will be hiring a month in advance as positions fill up fast.

3.

8.

Focus and put together a wellwritten CV and application (no spelling errors) – it will make all the difference.

Persevere with applications – don’t give up your search when unsuccessful, as there will be something perfectly suited to you.

4.

9.

Research the company – a parttime position still requires you to show an active interest in the company and the responsibilities of the job.

View all casual jobs as an opportunity for extra work experience and CV enhancement.

5.

Remember an application closing date is not a submission date. Apply as soon as possible after seeing an advertisement; they often close earlier than expected.

10.

Follow-up all applications with a request for feedback – any advice can help for the future.
