Your Big Dreams and Great Achievements The University of Alberta knows that, as an Advanced Placement (AP) student, your big dreams keep you highly motivated, both inside and outside the classroom. You help us set the bar at the U of A by demonstrating the work ethic and self-discipline needed to succeed. In being a well-rounded individual and contributing to a diverse student environment, you are the ideal U of A student. We value AP students and are happy to provide unique offerings ranging from admissions information to special services and recognition of your extra efforts. This booklet will introduce you to the benefits of AP at the U of A.
Great Beginnings—AP Admissions Admission for Dual Curricula Students If you are completing both AP exams and another curriculum (e.g. Alberta Education Diploma, B.C. Ministry of Education Diploma, or other international curricula etc.), you will be considered for admission on the basis of the highest individual scores presented on either transcript in the subjects required for your program. For example, Linda presents both AP Chemistry and Alberta Chemistry 30. When we receive her official AP College Board score report and her Alberta Education transcript, we will choose the higher of the two chemistry grades when calculating her admission average.
AP Grading Scale In order to be able to calculate an admission average using your AP results, your admissions advisor will convert your AP scores to percentages as seen to the right. Remember, we will always use whichever mark is higher between your grade 12 course and your AP exam.

Big Services The U of A appreciates what AP students like you accomplish and we are here to help you every step of the way! We offer a number of services including personalized advising and special events just for AP students.
Personalized Advising Have questions on admission or transfer credit? Are you seeking advice on the range of programs and courses available? Do you want to know more about student groups and campus activities? We invite you to talk with someone who understands what you have accomplished by completing AP courses and can help you learn what to expect from your university education. Your direct access to our AP advisors is AP@registrar.ualberta.ca.
AP/IB Student Conference What do you think is the most important change going on in our world today, and what are the implications for the future? Is it the economy, health care, the understanding of culture and politics? Our annual AP/IB Conference calls on AP students to explore these questions through the theme of Exploring Global Change. U of A professors and graduate students will lead attendees through a day of discussions about the changes and challenges we are experiencing today. This is an opportunity to learn from those who are at the forefront of understanding global change and to engage with other enriched curriculum students from across the Alberta. For more information about our AP events, please visit www.registrar.ualberta.ca/AP.
Great Recognition Many AP students are choosing the University of Alberta and the U of A is proud to provide AP students with outstanding recognition. From scholarships to transfer credit, we encourage you to take advantage of all that we have to offer.

Scholarships The rewards for a job well done come in many forms and you deserve them. The U of A sets aside scholarships specifically for AP Scholars. You will be automatically considered for these when we receive your official AP grade report. The Advanced Placement Scholarship is for the top 50 national and international AP Scholars (students who score 4 or higher on a minimum of 5 AP exams) and will be added to all of the other scholarships you may have already been offered. Consider it a little extra something to recognize your great achievements! Students who have completed AP courses are also eligible for multiple entrance award competitions, including the Academic Excellence, Scholastic Distinction and Leadership competitions. More information can be found online at www.ualberta.ca/awards.
Isaak was a winner of an AP Entrance Award Isaak – Strathcona Composite High School, Edmonton While one might think that the value of taking AP lies mostly in the prospect of getting advanced placement at university, I found that its benefits were of a more subjective nature. I appreciated the level of discussion present in high school AP classes and was more engaged by the level of material. While some areas (such as European History) turned out to involve considerable rote memorization, other courses gave a more comprehensive study of their topics than a regular high school course could. Upon entering the University of Alberta, having taken AP was advantageous for a few reasons. Credit was offered for a few courses, and those for which credit was not offered were much more straightforward—this made the transition to university relatively smooth. As well, the grueling AP exams prepared me for university exams, which I don’t think are any harder! While AP might be an entirely different game than university in terms of workload, it was nonetheless rewarding in terms of the approach to education. Outside of academics, I competed and trained with the U of A’s cross country and track & field teams, continuing my passion for athletics. More importantly, though, I am continuing to pursue genuine growth, both as a student individual and in my relationships. Advanced Placement

Advanced Standing The University of Alberta is proud to recognize the hard work you put into your AP courses. In order to be eligible to receive advanced standing, including Transfer Credit, Advanced Placement or Credit by Special Assessment (CSA), you must achieve a final score of 4 or 5 on any of the AP courses listed in the Equivalency Chart for AP Courses on pages 6 and 7. But first, allow us to explain what these advanced standing options offer!
Transfer Credit Transfer Credit means you are offered credit for a university level course based on your AP results. How transfer credit works:
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
ransfer credit will be automatically assessed once your final and official AP score T report is received. e host Transfer Credit Sessions each September to make sure you understand W how to handle your AP advanced standing. I f you are awarded transfer credit, you will not be assigned a specific U of A grade, nor will your AP grade appear on your U of A transcript. our U of A transcript will simply reflect transfer credit already achieved towards Y your degree. For example, if you earn transfer credit for AP Statistics, you will have already earned 3 Statistics credits at the U of A. ecause AP transfer credit will not be factored into your GPA, be aware if your B program or any scholarships you have received require you to be registered in a full course load.
Think of transfer credit like a mini scholarship—you don’t need to pay for a class you don’t have to take!

Declining Transfer Credit
◗
◗
◗
hile we encourage you to retain the transfer credit that you have earned, W you do have the option to decline the transfer credit. I f you decide to decline credit, you must complete the required paperwork and submit it to your faculty by the course registration add/delete deadline in September of your first year of studies. ull instructions and the form to decline transfer credit can be found on our AP F website at www.registrar.ualberta.ca/AP.
Transfer Credit and Professional Programs If you are planning to apply to a program that requires preprofessional study (e.g. Business, Dentistry, etc.), your AP transfer credit may be able to help you meet the program prerequisites and some programs will even use your AP grade when calculating a prerequisite average.*
EXAMPLE If you achieve a score of 4 or 5 in Physics B, you will receive transfer credit for PHYS 124 (★3) and 126 (★3), which are prerequisite courses for many professional programs, like Medicine, Dentistry etc.. Earning transfer credit means that you will not be required to retake these classes in university which can free up time in your schedule. As you can see, your AP courses can put you one step ahead! * The following professional programs will factor in your AP scores when calculating your prerequisite admission average: Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Pharmacy, and Medical Laboratory Science. An AP grade of 5 will be equated to a 4.0, and an AP grade of 4 will be equated to a 3.7 on the U of A four point scale.

Advanced Placement Earning Advanced Placement will allow you to skip ahead of the introductory classes and register in a senior level course in language classes such as French, German or Italian Language and Culture. While no transfer credit is offered, you do get to jump straight into the more advanced areas of a subject that you are passionate about!
Credit by Special Assessment (CSA) If you would like to receive university transfer credit for eligible AP courses like Chemistry, you can choose to earn Credit by Special Assessment. This would require you to ‘challenge’ the university-level course that is comparable to your AP course. This is usually done with a special exam and the grade that you achieve on your CSA exam will appear on your U of A transcript. If you would like to write a CSA exam, send an e-mail to AP@registrar.ualberta.ca.
