President Indira Samarasekera is the 12 th President of the University of Alberta. Originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka, Dr. Samarasekera is a renowned metallurgical process engineer who has received several honors recognizing her excellence in research. An avid supporter of the arts, Dr. Samarasekera actively encourages students to pursue a well-rounded education that fosters knowledge, creativity and ingenuity. Since beginning her term as President in July 2005, Dr. Samarasekera has been a visible presence on campus, meeting with students, faculty, staff, and the external community in defining and sharing her vision for the University of Alberta.

Inspiring communities where you’ll feel at home Living in a UAlberta residence is a great way to make new friends and be a part of the campus community. New international undergraduate students are guaranteed a space in residence if they complete the housing application by April 30th (some restrictions apply).

Where to live for your first year There are eleven student residences at UAlberta, including two new furnished apartment-style residences, Pinecrest House and Tamarack House. Here are the residence options for your first year at UAlberta:

On North (main) campus: • Opened in September 2013, Pinecrest House is UAlberta’s newest international residence and houses undergraduate students in their first to third years. Located on the scenic eastern edge of campus, Pinecrest House is just steps from classes and libraries, the river valley and neighbourhood amenities like grocery stores, banks and restaurants. Offers: Fully furnished four bedroom apartments • HUB Residence surrounds our campus shopping mall, which has many shops, restaurants, and services. 850 residents live in HUB, representing nearly every nationality in the world — you're surrounded by opportunities to meet new people and make friends! Offers: unfurnished apartments of different sizes • Lister Centre is all about community! Residents have access to great orientation programs with early movein dates, special events, an excellent academic support system and the ability to customize their experience by choosing quiet, alcohol-free or cohort floors. Lister has many great facilities like TV lounges, a convenience store, and more so that everything you need is right there. Offers: furnished dormitory rooms and a meal plan

Meal plans and food options Lister Centre offers a meal plan. This means that your meal funds are loaded on to your ONEcard (your UAlberta student ID card), and you can use it like a bank card to pay for meals at designated restaurants on campus, such as Lister Market, located in Lister Centre. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan are among the many options available each day.

international house International House (for students in 2nd year and above) offers Canadian and international students the chance to live, eat, and work together, share intercultural understanding, and develop awareness of themselves as global citizens.

If you don’t have a meal plan through your residence, you can still purchase food in your residence and around campus. There are numerous restaurants on and close to campus that offer a variety of different cultural cuisines, including halal food.

The International Centre is a place where international students at UAlberta go to get help, seek advice, and make new friends. You’re always welcome to visit! The IC is located in HUB Mall, which is UAlberta’s shopping centre and a popular student residence. You will meet a group of friendly and knowledgeable staff that can help you adjust to life at UAlberta and, ultimately, have a great experience here. Inspiring experiences outside the classroom As a UAlberta student, I started working part-time (fulltime during the summer) as a research assistant. I helped Landmark Group Master Builder with their BIM (building information model) development project. The most important lesson I learned is to gain self confidence and to believe my role is very important to this company as well as my co-workers. I BELONG to this company. This new mindset really helped me to gain lots of confidence and has kept my future rolling toward a healthy direction. I became a permanent employee shortly after I finished my last exam in my final semester.

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry trains physicians, researchers in the basic and clinical sciences, dentists, dental hygienists, and medical laboratory scientists for Alberta, Canada, and the world. There is an outstanding environment covering the spectrum of health research, with scientists who are highly sought after by research centres in North America and Europe.

UAlberta is home to Canada’s only accredited school of public health. Its focus is protecting and promoting the health of populations, as well as preventing disease and injury. Graduate programs prepare a new generation of skilled public health professionals to tackle the challenges facing our global population and improve the health of people.

Admission to the DDS and Dental Hygiene programs is limited. 85% of the places in the program are reserved for Alberta residents, five percent for international students and ten percent for non-Albertan Canadians. Entrance to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is restricted to students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants).

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine offers MSc programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech language pathology, as well as MSc and PhD programs in rehabilitation science. • Login information for your UAlberta webmail account. This is your personal e-mail account with the University. The University will be sending important notifications to you on this e-mail account. You are required to activate this e-mail account as soon as possible and check it regularly. Submit interim documents for Early Admission consideration. Starting as early as November, your application will be evaluated for Early Admission after we receive the necessary documents. With an Early Admission letter, you will be able to start your study permit application and be eligible to register in courses earlier than if you wait until the final document deadlines. Early Admission is not Final Admission. You will need to complete Step 8 and submit official and complete documents by the deadline.

High school students: Submit a school transcript that shows all of the courses you have already taken and grades you have already received, as well as courses still in progress. Postsecondary transfer students: can also be considered for Early Admission to many programs. Submit transcripts for your entire academic record (high school and postsecondary). For the current year in progress, you must submit all the transcripts up to and

Apply to live on-campus. All international students who apply for housing before April 30, 2014 are guaranteed a space in one of our residences for their first year. This application is separate from your application to study at UAlberta. If you have a preference for a particular residence community (page 11), make sure you apply as early as possible, starting October 1, 2013. You can submit your housing application once you have applied for admission and obtained your 7-digit UAlberta student ID number. You can apply online at www.ualberta.ca/residences There is a CAD $175 application fee for housing (a partial refund of $150 may be available if you are unable to attend and cancel before room offers are made).

You can get advanced standing or transfer credit if you successfully complete certain high school courses. UAlberta can offer you transfer credit, advanced placement, or the opportunity for credit by special assessment if you have demonstrated excellence in specific subject areas under the GCE A-Level, IB, and AP curricula.

You don’t have to make the final decision about your major and minor right away. UAlberta offers 200+ undergraduate programs so you have great flexibility to tailor your degree to your interests. You can apply now and then send your documents later. To start the application process, you just need to complete the Application for Undergraduate Studies form and submit it. The application deadline for most direct entry programs is May 1, but there are some exceptions. Documents have a later deadline, (June 15 or August 1 for most programs) so you can send them later on, although you should try to send them as soon as possible to get an admissions decision sooner.

English language proficiency requirement (ELP) • All undergraduate applicants to English-speaking and bilingual programs need an adequate level of English language proficiency before admission, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin.

• The University of Alberta reserves the right to use discretion in determining adequate levels of language proficiency to ensure success in academic programs. In some cases, additional English language testing, conducted by the Faculty of Extension, may be required to confirm English language proficiency.

Successful completion of three years of full-time education in English in: Canada (including Grade 12 year), or another country where English is recognized as the official language of instruction, or in a recognized school/institution where English is the primary language of instruction.

Such education must include Alberta Grade 12 or its equivalent level, and can be a combination of secondary and postsecondary education.

Successful completion of the equivalent of three years of full-time instruction in a school/institution in Canada in which the major language of instruction is other than English.

The level of English proficiency required for graduation is equivalent to that in English language schools/institutions in Canada.

Graduation from a degree program offered by an accredited University at which English is the primary language of instruction.

Spoken English language proficiency (required by some programs) If you select a program related to Health Sciences or Education, you will be required to meet the spoken English language proficiency requirement. Please refer to the UAlberta Calendar for how to meet this requirement (Section 13.3.2).

Note 1: Enrolment in English as a second language (ESL) courses or programs will not be included in the calculation of three years of full-time study. Enrolment must be in a regular high school or postsecondary for-credit program. Where students are registered in both ESL and regular programs, the ESL hours will be deducted from the total educational hours. Note 2: Proof of three years of education must be submitted in the form of official transcripts (including details on course enrolment and hours of instruction). Note 3: Failing grades/courses will not be counted when calculating full-time attendance. Only courses with passing grades will be considered.

Note 4: Standardized test results must be issued directly from the testing office. Photocopies will not be accepted. Test scores must be valid and verifiable.
